Search

Odin has successfully observed the molecular core rho Oph A in the 572.5 GHz rotational ground state line of ammonia, NH3 (J,K = 1,0 - 0,0). The interpretation of this result makes use of complementary molecular line data obtained from the ground (C17O and CH3OH) as part of the Odin preparatory work. Comparison of these observations with theoretical model calculations of line excitation and transfer yields a quite ordinary abundance of methanol, X(CH3OH) = 3e-9. Unless NH3 is not entirely segregated from C17O and CH3OH, ammonia is found to be significantly underabundant with respect to typical dense core values, viz. X(NH3) = 8e-10.

We present results from a survey of the central 700 arcmin2 region of the ρ Ophiuchi molecular cloud at 850 μm using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Using the clump-finding procedure developed by Williams et al., we identify 55 independent objects and compute size, flux, and degree of central concentration. Comparison with isothermal, pressure-confined, self-gravitating Bonnor-Ebert spheres implies that the clumps have internal temperatures of 10-30 K and surface pressures P/k = 106-7 K cm-3, consistent with the expected average pressure in the ρ Ophiuchi central region, P/k ~ 2 × 107 K cm-3. The clump masses span 0.02-6.3 M☉ assuming a dust temperature Td ~ 20 K and a dust emissivity κ850 = 0.01 cm2 g-1. The distribution of clump masses is well characterized by a broken power law, N(M) ∝ M-α, with α = 1.0-1.5 for M > 0.6 M☉ and α = 0.5 for M ≤ 0.6 M☉, although significant incompleteness may affect the slope at the lower mass end. This mass function is in general agreement with the ρ Ophiuchi clump mass function derived at 1.3 mm by Motte et al. The two-point correlation function of the clump separations is measured and reveals clustering on size scales r < 3 × 104 AU with a radial power-law exponent γ = 0.75.

We present results on the optimum reconstruction of chop data taken using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Using an artificial data set with known noise properties, we analyze three techniques for constructing images of the sky from the chop data: Emerson Fourier deconvolution, matrix inversion, and maximum entropy reconstruction. We conclude that a matrix inversion formulation via an iterative procedure produces the best image reconstructions. We apply the three reconstruction techniques to produce maps of the calibration point source CRL 618 and the ? Ophiuchi A core at 850 ?m and use Wiener filtering to remove the high-frequency noise component from the matrix inversion method.

The Odin satellite has been used to detect emission and absorption in the 557-GHz H2O line in the Galactic Centre towards the Sgr A* Circumnuclear Disk (CND), and the Sgr A +20 km/s and +50 km/s molecular clouds. Strong broad H2O emission lines have been detected in all three objects. Narrow H2O absorption lines are present at all three positions and originate along the lines of sight in the 3-kpc Spiral Arm, the -30 km/s Spiral Arm and the Local Sgr Spiral Arm. Broad H2O absorption lines near -130 km/s are also observed, originating in the Expanding Molecular Ring. A new molecular feature (the ``High Positive Velocity Gas'' - HPVG) has been identified in the positive velocity range of ~ +120 to +220 km/s, seen definitely in absorption against the stronger dust continuum emission from the +20 km/s and +50 km/s clouds and possibly in emission towards the position of Sgr A* CND. Odin has successfully observed three regions in the Orion A cloud, i.e. Ori KL, Ori S and the Orion Bar, in the 572.5 GHz rotational ground state line of ammonia, ortho-NH3 (J,K) = (1,0) -> (0,0), and the result for the Orion Bar represents the first detection in an ammonia line. Several velocity components are present in the data. Specifically, the observed line profile from the Orion Bar can be decomposed into two components, which are in agreement with observations in high-J CO lines by Wilson et al. 2001. Using the source model for the Orion Bar by these authors, our Odin observation implies a total ammonia abundance of NH3/H2 = 5E-9., 4 pages with 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We have mapped the submillimeter emission from the 1(10)-1(01) transition of ortho-water in the W3 star-forming region. A 5'x5' map of the W3 IRS4 and W3 IRS5 region reveals strong water lines at half the positions in the map. The relative strength of the Odin lines compared to previous observations by SWAS suggests that we are seeing water emission from an extended region. Across much of the map the lines are double-peaked, with an absorption feature at -39 km/s; however, some positions in the map show a single strong line at -43 km/s. We interpret the double-peaked lines as arising from optically thick, self-absorbed water emission near the W3 IRS5, while the narrower blue-shifted lines originate in emission near W3 IRS4. In this model, the unusual appearance of the spectral lines across the map results from a coincidental agreement in velocity between the emission near W3 IRS4 and the blue peak of the more complex lines near W3 IRS5. The strength of the water lines near W3 IRS4 suggests we may be seeing water emission enhanced in a photon-dominated region., Accepted to A&A Letters as part of the special Odin issue; 4 pages

We have obtained 850 and 450 micron continuum maps of 21 low mass cores with SED's ranging from pre-protostellar to Class I (18K < Tbol < 370K), using SCUBA at the JCMT. In this paper we present the maps, radial intensity profiles, and photometry. Pre-protostellar cores do not have power-law intensity profiles, whereas the intensity profiles of Class 0 and Class I sources can be fitted with power laws over a large range of radii. A substantial number of sources have companion sources within a few arcminutes (2 out of 5 pre-protostellar cores, 9 out of 16 Class 0/I sources). The mean separation between sources is 10800 AU. The median separation is 18000 AU including sources without companions as a lower limit. The mean value of the spectral index between 450 and 850 microns is 2.8 +- 0.4, with PPCs having slightly lower spectral indices (2.5 +- 0.4). The mean mass of the sample, based on the dust emission in a 120 arcsecond aperture, is 1.1 +- 0.9 solar masses. For the sources fitted by power-law intensity distributions (I_nu(b)/I_nu(0) = (b/b_0) ^ m), the mean value of m is 1.52 +- 0.45 for Class 0 and I sources at 850 microns and 1.44 +- 0.25 at 450 microns. Based on a simple analysis, assuming the emission is in the Rayleigh-Jeans limit and that T_d(r) ~ r ^ {-0.4}, these values of m translate into power-law density distributions (n ~ r ^ {-p}) with p ~ 2.1. We have observed HCO+ J=3-2 toward 16 Class I sources and 18 Class 0 sources, many of which were selected from Mardones et al. (1997). Eight sources have profiles significantly skewed to the blue relative to optically thin lines. We suggest six sources as new infall candidates. We find an equal "blue excess" among Class 0 and Class I sources after combining this sample with that of Gregersen et al. (1997). We used a Monte Carlo code to simulate the temporal evolution of line profiles of optically thick lines of HCO+, CS and H2CO in a collapsing cloud and found that HCO+ had the strongest asymmetry at late times. We have observed 23 Class 0 sources in the HCO+ J=4-3 and 3-2 lines. The mean bolometric temperature of the 16 sources with well-determined values is 44 K and the mean luminosity is 5.7 L_sun, excluding two sources of considerably higher luminosity. Nine sources, including three sources previously suggested to be collapsing, have the correct (blue) spectral line asymmetry for infall in both lines. Three sources have the opposite (red) asymmetry in both lines, and one source, L1157, has a red asymmetry in HCO+ J=4-3 and a blue asymmetry in J=3-2. The rest have no significant or consistent asymmetry. The H13CO+ J=4-3 and 3-2 lines were also observed to find the velocity of the ambient gas, and sources with an interesting line asymmetry were mapped. A Monte Carlo code was used to produce an evolutionary sequence of collapsing cloud models of the HCO+ J=4-3 and 3-2 lines and to compare various diagnostics of the resulting line profiles. The same code was used to compare infall models to the observations in one source, L1527. The results were consistent with previous collapse models. Based on integrated intensity maps of the line peaks and wings, as well as the velocity of the H13CO+ line, we select six of the nine sources with a blue line asymmetry as good candidates for protostellar collapse. Further evidence is needed to establish that infall is taking place. The HCO+ spectra are not conclusive because bipolar outflows produce strong emission, which can confuse the issue in any individual source. However, the predominance of blue asymmetries over red asymmetries is not naturally explained in outflow models, whereas it is expected in collapse models., Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures, to be published in ApJ

We have observed the HCO+ J=3-2 line toward 17 starless cores selected from the list of Ward-Thompson et al. (1994). Six of these cores have line asymmetries indicative of collapse. The excess of blue-skewed profiles over red-skewed profiles is at least as large as that found in samples of Class 0 and early Class I sources. The observed line profiles have the same narrow linewidths and small peak temperatures predicted for young sources in evolutionary models, but the blue/red ratios, like those of older sources, are higher than models predict. The infall signature also occurs over large scales, suggesting that these cores have overall inward motions. We have divided these starless cores into two groups based on the continuum photometry of Ward-Thompson et al. and our HCO+ data. We find stronger HCO+ emission among the cores detected in the submillimeter and all the blue-skewed line profiles are in this group, supporting the suggestion of Ward-Thompson et al. that these are the pre-protostellar cores., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, to be published in The Astrophysical Journal

New results from water mapping observations of the Orion KL region using the submm/mm wave satellite Odin (2.1\arcmin beam size at 557 GHz), are presented. The ortho-H2O \jkktrans{1}{1}{0}{1}{0}{1} ground state transition was observed in a 7arcminx 7arcmin rectangular grid with a spacing of 1\arcmin, while the same line of H218O was measured in two positions, Orion KL itself and 2\arcmin south of Orion KL. In the main water species, the KL molecular outflow is largely resolved from the ambient cloud and it is found to have an extension of 60\arcsec-110\arcsec. The H2O outflow profile exhibits a rather striking absorption-like asymmetry at the line centre. Self-absorption in the near (or ``blue'') part of the outflow (and possibly in foreground quiescent halo gas) is tentatively suggested to play a role here. We argue that the dominant part of the KL H218O outflow emission emanates from the compact (size ~ 15\arcsec) low-velocity flow and here estimate an H2O abundance of circa 10-5 compared to all H2 in the flow - an order of magnitude below earlier estimates of the H2O abundance in the shocked gas of the high-velocity flow. The narrow ambient cloud lines show weak velocity trends, both in the N-S and E-W directions. H218O is detected for the first time in the southern position at a level of ~ 0.15 K and we here estimate an H2O abundance of (1-8) x 10-8. Key Odin operational and instrumental features and highlights from our sub-millimetre and millimetre wave observations of H2O, H218O, NH3, 15NH3 and O2 are presented, with some insights into accompanying Odin Letters in this AA H2O observations of Galactic Centre sources, of shock enhanced H2O towards the SNR IC443, and of the candidate infall source IRAS 16293-2422; H218O detections in Orion KL and in comet Ikeya-Zhang; sub-mm detections of NH3 in Orion KL (outflow, ambient cloud and bar) and ρ Oph, and very recently, of 15NH3 in~Orion KL. Simultaneous sensitive searches for the 119 GHz line of O2 have resulted in very low abundance limits, which are difficult to accomodate in chemical models. We also demonstrate, by means of a quantitative comparison of Orion KL H2O results, that the Odin and SWAS observational data sets are very consistently calibrated.
