New airborne radar sounding surveys at 60 MHz are used to trace internal layering between the Vostok and EPICA Dome C ice core sites. Eleven layers, spanning two glacial cycles from the last glacial maximum back to the MIS 7c interglacial, are used to correlate the two ice core chronologies. Independent of palaeoclimate signals, radar sounding enables correlation of the timescales, with a radar depth uncertainty equivalent to hundreds of years, which is small relative to the ice core dating uncertainties of thousands of years. Along the radar transects, horizons belonging to the last glacial cycle are impacted by aeolian stratigraphic reworking that increases radar technique uncertainty for this interval. However, older layers are used to propagate the higher resolution Vostok ages to the lower resolution Dome C ice core using the Suwa and Bender (2008) Vostok O2 / N2 chronology to give a recalibration of the Parrenin et al. (2007) EPICA EDC3 timescale between 1597 m and 2216 m depth (126 ka to 247 ka age interval).

This paper presents an inter-comparison of three different models applied to various glacier geometries. The three models are built on different approximations of the Stokes equations, from the well known Shallow Ice Approximation (SIA) to the full-Stokes (FS) solution with an intermediate higher-order (HO) model which incorporates longitudinal stresses. The studied glaciers are synthetic geometries, but two of them are constructed so as to mimic a valley glacier and a volcano glacier. For each class of glacier, the bedrock slope and/or the aspect ratio are varied. First, the models are compared in a diagnostic way for a fixed and given geometry. Here the SIA surface velocity can overestimate the FS velocity by a factor of 5 to a factor of 10. Then, the free surface is allowed to evolve and the time-dependent evolution of the glacier is studied. As a result, the difference between the models decreases, but can still be as large as a factor of 1.5 to 2. This decrease can be explained by a negative feedback for the SIA which overestimates velocities.

In response to climate change, most glaciers are losing mass and hence contribute to sea-level rise. Repeated and accurate mapping of their surface topography is required to estimate their mass balance and to extrapolate/calibrate sparse field glaciological measurements. In this study we evaluate the potential of sub-meter stereo imagery from the recently launched Pléiades satellites to derive digital elevation models (DEMs) of glaciers and their elevation changes. Our five evaluation sites, where nearly simultaneous field measurements were collected, are located in Iceland, the European Alps, the central Andes, Nepal and Antarctica. For Iceland, the Pléiades DEM is also compared to a lidar DEM. The vertical biases of the Pléiades DEMs are less than 1 m if ground control points (GCPs) are used, but reach up to 7 m without GCPs. Even without GCPs, vertical biases can be reduced to a few decimetres by horizontal and vertical co-registration of the DEMs to reference altimetric data on ice-free terrain. Around these biases, the vertical precision of the Pléiades DEMs is ±1 m and even ±0.5 m on the flat glacier tongues (1σ confidence level). Similar precision levels are obtained in the accumulation areas of glaciers and in Antarctica. We also demonstrate the high potential of Pléiades DEMs for measuring seasonal, annual and multi-annual elevation changes with an accuracy of 1 m or better if cloud-free images are available. The negative region-wide mass balances of glaciers in the Mont-Blanc area (−1.04 ± 0.23 m a−1 water equivalent, w.e.) are revealed by differencing Satellite pour l'Observation de la Terre 5 (SPOT 5) and Pléiades DEMs acquired in August 2003 and 2012, confirming the accelerated glacial wastage in the European Alps.

The grounding line is a key element of coastal outlet glaciers, acting on their dynamics. Accurately knowing its position is fundamental for both modelling the glacier dynamics and establishing a benchmark for later change detection. Here we map the grounding line of the Astrolabe Glacier in East Antarctica (66°41' S, 140°05' E), using both hydrostatic and tidal methods. The first method is based on new surface and ice thickness data from which the line of buoyant floatation is found. The second method uses kinematic GPS measurements of the tidal response of the ice surface. By detecting the transitions where the ice starts to move vertically in response to the tidal forcing we determine control points for the grounding line position along GPS profiles. Employing a two-dimensional elastic plate model, we compute the rigid short-term behaviour of the ice plate and estimate the correction required to compare the kinematic GPS control points with the previously determined line of floatation. These two approaches show consistency and lead us to propose a grounding line for the Astrolabe Glacier that significantly deviates from the lines obtained so far from satellite imagery.

The lithosphere responds to loading by elastic flexure which is followed by viscous relaxation, the amount of which depends on the stress duration. This study compares results of an Earth model in which the lithosphere is modelled as a purely elastic layer and as a more general viscoelastic solid overlain by a rigid crust. It shows the emergence of a noticeable difference in the short wavelength (1×102–5×102 km) component of the bedrock deformation after loading durations of the order of 105–106 yr assuming a lower lithosphere viscosity of the order of 1023–1024 Pa.s. In particular, for the long-term loading hypothesised to be imposed by the East Antarctic ice sheet, we find that a viscoelastic lithosphere yields a more local deformation pattern to which ice sheet dynamics are highly sensitive. It confirms that modelling of the Antarctic long-term evolution would benefit from a fully coupled ice/bedrock approach in which the lithosphere would be represented by a viscoelastic solid.

We use a self-gravitating viscoelastic model of the Earth and a dynamically consistent marine ice-sheet model to study the relationships between marine ice-sheet dynamics, relative sea level, basal topography and bedrock dynamics. Our main conclusion is that sea-level change and lithospheric coupling are likely to have played limited roles in the postglacial retreat of marine ice sheets. The postglacial rise in sea level would only have caused at the most around 100 km of grounding-line retreat for an ice sheet of similar dimensions to the West Antarctic ice sheet, compared with the several hundred km of retreat which has occurred in the Ross Sea. There is no evidence that reverse slopes lead to instability. Incorporating coupling with lithospheric dynamics does not produce markedly different effects. The implication of these studies is that marine ice-sheet retreat is the result of physical mechanisms other than lithospheric coupling and sea-level rise.

Marine ice sheets with mechanics described by the shallow-ice approximation by definition do not couple mechanically with the shelf. Such ice sheets are known to have neutral equilibria. We consider the implications of this for their dynamics and in particular for mechanisms which promote marine ice-sheet retreat. The removal of ice-shelf buttressing leading to enhanced flow in grounded ice is discounted as a significant influence on mechanical grounds. Sea-level rise leading to reduced effective pressures under ice streams is shown to be a feasible mechanism for producing postglacial West Antarctic ice-sheet retreat but is inconsistent with borehole evidence. Warming thins the ice sheet by reducing the average viscosity but does not lead to grounding-line retreat. Internal oscillations either specified or generated via a MacAyeal–Payne thermal mechanism promote migration. This is a noise-induced drift phenomenon stemming from the neutral equilibrium property of marine ice sheets. This migration occurs at quite slow rates, but these are sufficiently large to have possibly played a role in the dynamics of the West Antarctic ice sheet after the glacial maximum. Numerical experiments suggest that it is generally true that while significant changes in thickness can be caused by spatially uniform changes, spatial variability coupled with dynamical variability is needed to cause margin movement.

SUMMARY When predicting the deformation of the Earth under surface loads, most models follow the same methodology, consisting of producing a unit response that is then convolved with the appropriate surface forcing. These models take into account the whole Earth, and are generally spherical, computing a unit response in terms of its spherical harmonic representation through the use of load Love numbers. From these Love numbers, the spatial pattern of the bedrock response to any particular scenario can be obtained. Two diierent methods are discussed here. The ¢rst, which is related to the convolution in the classical sense, appears to be very sensitive to the total number of degrees used when summing these Love numbers in the harmonic series in order to obtain the corresponding Green’s function. We will see from the spectral properties of these Love numbers how to compute these series correctly and how consequently to eliminate in practice the sensitivity to the number of degrees (Gibbs Phenomena). The second method relies on a preliminary harmonic decomposition of the load, which reduces the convolution to a simple product within Fourier space. The convergence properties of the resulting Fourier series make this approach less sensitive to any harmonic cut-oi. However, this method can be more or less computationally expensive depending on the loading characteristics. This paper describes these two methods, how to eliminate Gibbs phenomena in the Green’s function method, and shows how the load characteristics as well as the available computational resources can be determining factors in selecting one approach.

Mass-balance and dynamic measurements carried out on glacier de Saint Sorlin since 1957 provide a good opportunity to study the dynamics of this glacier. Ice-flow analysis shows that dynamic changes have been important over the last 40 years and that these changes are not consistent with the concepts usually used in glacier modelling. Present velocities are larger than the 1960 velocities, although the thickness decreased everywhere (10–30 m in the ablation zone). A simple numerical ice-flow model which does not include longitudinal stress gradients has been used to investigate these phenomena. This model allows us to infer the sliding velocity from observed surface and calculated deformation velocities. We conclude that: (1) the sliding velocity cannot be described by Weertman analysis or empirical relations which link the sliding to the thickness and surface slope; (2) the inferred sliding velocity is uniform over at least half of the glacier; and (3) there is no clear link between the sliding process and the quantity of water coming from surface ablation. Furthermore, it may not be reasonable to calibrate model flow parameters from geometry changes because the surface geometry is relatively insensitive to velocity changes over some decades.

We present results from a fully coupled ice/ bedrock model calculation of the Greenland ice sheet and the underlying Earth during the last two glacial cycles. The method treats the mutual interaction between the ice and the bedrock and yields the main glacial-isostatic characteristics of the ice-sheet evolution and the bedrock adjustment since the Last Glacial Maximum. By taking advantage of the splitting of the present-day rate of bed uplift into a viscous and an elastic component, these results allow one to distinguish between the bedrock response to the past and present ice sheet evolution, respectively.

We compare this hydrostatic map with kinematic GPS measurements of the tidal response of the ice surface. By detecting the transitions where the ice starts to move vertically in response to the tidal forcing we find control points for the grounding line position along GPS profiles. %If it can be shown that the long-term viscous mechanical behaviour of the ice slab validates the hydrostatic approach, mapping the grounding line from the ice supper surface displacements conversely requires correcting for the rigid elastic slab effect that dominates at tidal frequencies. With the help of a 2-dimensional elastic plate model, rigid elastic deviations are computed and applied to these control points. Once the extent of the grounding zone, the kinematic approach is consistent with the hydrostatic map. These two approaches lead us to propose a grounding line for the Astrolabe Glacier that significantly deviates from those obtained so far from satellite imagery.

The flow of glaciers and ice-streams is strongly influenced by the presence of water at the interface between ice and bedrock. In this paper, a hydrological model evaluating the subglacial water pressure is developed with the final aim of estimating the sliding velocities of glaciers. The global model fully couples the subglacial hydrology and the ice dynamics through a water-dependent friction law. The hydrological part of the model follows a double continuum approach which relies on the use of porous layers to compute water heads in inefficient and efficient drainage systems. This method has the advantage of a relatively low computational cost that would allow its application to large ice bodies such as Greenland or Antarctica ice-streams. The hydrological model has been implemented in the finite element code Elmer/Ice, which simultaneously computes the ice flow. Herein, we present an application to the Haut Glacier d'Arolla for which we have a large number of observations, making it well suited to the purpose of validating both the hydrology and ice flow model components. The selection of hydrological, under-determined parameters from a wide range of values is guided by comparison of the model results with available glacier observations. Once this selection has been performed, the coupling between subglacial hydrology and ice dynamics is undertaken throughout a melt season. Results indicate that this new modelling approach for subglacial hydrology is able to reproduce the broad temporal and spatial patterns of the observed subglacial hydrological system. Furthermore, the coupling with the ice dynamics shows good agreement with the observed spring speed-up.

Accounting for isostasy in glaciological models has always been a necessity but these models mostly use very simple parameterizations (Le Meur and Huybrechts, 1996). The need for more realistic isostatic parameterizations rapidly became apparent, especially in the treatment of bedrock-sensitive issues such as the grounding-line migration (Huybrechts, 1990a, b). To this end, a rather sophisticated Earth model, avoiding most of the common assumptions, has been developed and is presented here. The two key groups of parameters, to which the model is most sensitive, are the Earth properties and the rheological law used for the mantle. The aim of this paper is first to justify the use of Maxwell rheology for the mantle and then to tune the most sensitive Earth parameter, namely the mantle viscosity, in order to match the numerous present-day uplift data over Fennoscandia. So, in the first instance, a short review of the different available rheologies is presented and discussed. The visco-elastic theory, as well as the mathematical background used in the present model, is also briefly sketched. Secondly, a glacial scenario over Fennoscandia served as an input for the model in a calibration test on the mantle-viscosity values. The degree of agreement of the model outputs with the present-day measurements gives a reference set of Green functions, to which one can reasonably refer when modelling the isostatic response over areas where such a control is not possible (Le Meur and Huybrechts, 1996). Finally, a closer look to the time-dependent surface displacements will confirm the ability for the model to reproduce correctly the main postglacial rebound characteristic features.

Polar ice sheets mass balance is a timely topic intensively studied in the context of global change and sea-level rise. However, obtaining mass balance estimates in Antarctica in particular, remains difficult due to various logistical problems. In the framework of the TASTE-IDEA program, labeled as an International Polar Year project, continuous Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) measurements were carried out during a traverse realised in Adelie Land (East Antarctica) during the 2008–2009 austral summer between the Italo-French Dome C (DC) polar plateau site and French Dumont D'Urville (DdU) coastal station. The aim of this study was to process and interpret GPR data in terms of snow accumulation, to analyse its spatial and temporal variability along the DC-DdU traverse and compare it with historical data and modeling. The emphasis has been put on the last 300 yr, from the pre-industrial to recent time period. Beta-radioactivity counting and gamma spectrometry were studied in cores at LGGE laboratory, providing a depth-age calibration for radar measurements. Over the 600 km of usable GPR data, depth and snow accumulation were determined with the help of three distinct layers visible on the radargrams (≈1730, 1799 and 1941 AD). Preliminary results reveal a gradual accumulation increase towards the coast and the occurrence of previously undocumented undulating structures between 300 and 600 km from DC. Results agree fairly well with data from previous studies and modeling. Concluding on temporal variations is difficult because of the margin of error introduced by density estimation. This study should have various applications such as for model validation.

Recent glaciological surveys have revealed a significant increase of ice discharge from polar ice caps into the ocean. In parallel, ice flow models have been greatly improved to better reproduce current changes and forecast the future behavior of ice sheets. For these models, surface topography and bedrock elevation are crucial input parameters that largely control the dynamics and the ensuing overall mass balance of the ice sheet. For obvious reasons of inaccessibility, only sparse and uneven bedrock elevation data is available. This raw data is processed to produce Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) on a regular 5 km grid. These DEMs are used to constrain the basal boundary conditions of all ice sheet models. Here, by using a full‐Stokes finite element code, we examine the sensitivity of an ice flow model to the accuracy of the bedrock description. In the context of short‐term ice sheet forecast, we show that in coastal regions, the bedrock elevation should be known at a resolution of the order of one kilometer. Conversely, a crude description of the bedrock in the interior of the continent does not affect modeling of the ice outflow into the ocean. These findings clearly indicate that coastal regions should be prioritized during future geophysical surveys. They also indicate that a paradigm shift is required to change the current design of DEMs describing the bedrock below the ice sheets: they must give users the opportunity to incorporate high‐resolution bedrock elevation data in regions of interest.

Extensive field measurements and historical data have been used to re-analyse the cause of the outburst flood from Glacier de Tête Rousse that devastated the village of Saint-Gervais–Le Fayet, French Alps in 1892, causing 175 fatalities. The origin of this disaster was the rupture of an intraglacial cavity in Glacier de Tête Rousse that released 200 000 m3 of water and ice. All previous studies have concluded that the intraglacial cavity was formed from a crevasse that was filled and enlarged by meltwater. The re-analysis presented here suggests that the reservoir of the upper cavity did not originate as an enlarging crevasse. The origin of the meltwater reservoir was more likely a supraglacial lake formed before 1878 during a period of negative mass balance. Following a period of positive mass balance after 1878, the lake was hidden until the outburst flood of 1892. This means that such hazards may be detected by checking regularly for the formation of a lake on the surface of the glacier before it is hidden.

Increase in ice-shelf melting is generally presumed to have triggered recent coastal ice-sheet thinning. Using a full-Stokes finite element model which includes a proper description of the grounding line dynamics, we investigate the impact of melting below ice shelves. We argue that the influence of ice-shelf melting on the ice-sheet dynamics induces a complex response, and the first naive view that melting inevitably leads to loss of grounded ice is erroneous. We demonstrate that melting acts directly on the magnitude of the buttressing force by modifying both the area experiencing lateral resistance and the ice-shelf velocity, indicating that the decrease of back stress imposed by the ice-shelf is the prevailing cause of inland dynamical thinning. We further show that feedback from melting and buttressing forces can lead to nontrivial results, as an increase in the average melt rate may lead to inland ice thickening and grounding line advance.

Supraglacial Lac de Rochemelon was formed 50 years ago behind an ice dam and grew steadily until 2004. In October 2004, the volume of the lake reached 650 000 m3, bringing its surface within 0.2 m of the top of the ice dam. To eliminate the threat to towns located below in the event of an overflow, the lake was drained artificially in October 2004 and during the summer of 2005. Once the volume had been reduced to 250 000 m3 by siphoning, a channel was dug with explosives and the remaining water overflowed naturally. This offered a very good opportunity to investigate the breaching of an ice dam accompanied by thermal erosion of the drainage channel. Extensive field measurements were carried out during drainage. Analysis of the energy dissipated in the channel reveals that only half of the available energy was used for breach erosion. A numerical model was used to simulate the evolution of a number of variables during drainage and to study the sensitivity of discharge and ice erosion to different parameters, revealing a high sensitivity to water temperature. Model simulations indicate that natural drainage of this lake at the beginning of October 2004 would have led to a peak discharge of 3 s−1.

Numerous glaciological data have been obtained from measurements carried out on Glacier d’Argentière, Mont Blanc area, France, since the beginning of the 20th century. Moreover, data on annual mass balance, ice-flow velocity, thickness variation and length fluctuation have been obtained from yearly measurements performed since 1975. This dataset provides an excellent opportunity to analyze the relationships between surface mass balance and dynamic response over time periods during which net mass balance changed from positive to negative. Following a positive specific-net-balance period between 1960 and 1981, the ablation zone experienced a large increase in thickness and ice-flow velocities. Conversely, the highly negative specific-net-balance period since 1982 has led to strong thinning, deceleration and retreat of the tongue. The response of these observed dynamics to surface mass balance is analyzed from ice-flux calculations performed on three transverse cross-sections. Our results reveal that the ice fluxes are largely accommodated by ice-flow velocities. Velocity fluctuations are synchronous over the entire area studied. In the largest part of the glacier, no compressing/extending flow change has been observed over the last 30 years and thickness changes are solely driven by surface mass-balance changes. However, on the tongue of the glacier, thickness changes do not depend on surface mass balance but are mainly driven by changes in the longitudinal strain rate.

International audience; The stability of marine ice sheets and outlet glaciers is mostly controlled by the dynamics of their grounding line, i.e., where the bottom contact of the ice changes from bedrock or till to ocean water. The last report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has clearly underlined the poor ability of models to capture the dynamics of outlet glaciers. Here we present computations of grounding line dynamics on the basis of numerical solutions of the full Stokes equations for ice velocity, coupled with the evolution of the air ice– and sea ice–free interfaces. The grounding line position is determined by solving the contact problem between the ice and a rigid bedrock using the finite element code Elmer. Results of the simulations show that marine ice sheets are unstable on upsloping beds and undergo hysteresis under perturbation of ice viscosity, confirming conclusions from boundary layer theory. The present approach also indicates that a 2-D unconfined marine ice sheet sliding over a downsloping bedrock does not exhibit neutral equilibrium. Glaciers act as very good climate indicators, and the relationship they develop with climate can be exploited at 2 levels. First of all, changes in meteorological conditions are directly recorded in glacier mass balance changes (in the form of either winter precipitation or summer ablation). Therefore, from separately measuring these two terms, climatic trends can be inferred and corresponding results are all the better as mass balance series are spanning longer periods. These mass balance changes then later express under the form of fluctuations in glacier length and thickness and/or ice surface velocities. Measuring these changes is another means of inferring climate change, although the relationship is much more complex because of a time-lagging non-linear response due to complicated processes such as ice rheology or basal gliding which only a deterministic ice-flow model can capture. Due to this specificity and complexity of the dynamical response of glaciers, using these glacier changes for climate reconstructions will also require as long as possible measurement series. It is therefore in this context of a better understanding of climate through glacier change that the glacier survey network was initiated. Three main types of measurements are undertaken ; (i) mass balance measurements with both winter accumulation and summer ablation, (ii) glacier dynamical response to mass balance change in the form of thickness and length changes as well as surface velocity measurements and last (iii) measurements of local meteorology with the help of Automatic Weather Stations. This paper describes the structure and the context in which the survey network was initiated as well as all the ensuing measurements. Some scientific applications are then presented as the results of these observations like the significant changes in surface mass balance connected to the strong changes in radiative and turbulent heat fluxes at the surface of glaciers over the last decades, or the better understanding of ice dynamics from direct inspection of glacier dynamical changes or from using these latter changes for tuning, validating and exploiting the results of an ice flow model., Les glaciers constituent d'excellents indicateurs climatiques et les liens qu'ils développent avec le climat s'observent à deux niveaux. Tout d'abord les conditions climatiques vont contrôler le bilan de masse en surface via l'accumulation hivernale et l'ablation estivale. Ainsi de la mesure séparée de ces deux termes constitutifs du bilan, il est possible de mettre en évidence des tendances climatiques et ce d'autant mieux que les séries de bilan mesurées sont pérennes. Ensuite, ces variations dans le bilan de surface vont à terme se traduire par des changements dans la morphologie (épaisseur, longueur) et dans la dynamique (vitesse d'écoulement) des glaciers. La mesure de ces fluctuations glaciaires est donc aussi un moyen de remonter aux conditions climatiques responsables, même si le lien est beaucoup moins simple parce que décalé en temps, non-linéaire, et faisant intervenir des processus complexes (rhéologie de la glace, glissement basal) que seul les modèles physiques d'écoulement de la glace sont capables d'appréhender. Ces particularités justifient donc aussi l'intérêt de la mesure de ces fluctuations glaciaires à des fins de reconstitutions climatiques, une approche qui, là aussi, sera d'autant plus efficace que les séries de mesures seront complètes et pérennes. C'est donc dans ce contexte d'une meilleure compréhension du climat au travers des glaciers qu'est né le Service d'Observation des glaciers et son protocole de mesures. On distingue 3 catégories principales ; (i) les mesures ayant trait au bilan de masse sous la forme d'une accumulation hivernale et d'une ablation estivale, (ii) les mesures relatives à la réponse dynamique des glaciers (variations de longueur, d'épaisseur, de vitesses en surface) aux changements de bilan (et par voie de conséquences aux changements climatiques) et enfin (iii) les mesures permettant de mieux préciser la météorologie locale par le biais de stations météorologiques automatiques. Cette présentation décrit le contexte de mise en place de la structure de l'observatoire ainsi que toutes les mesures effectuées en son sein. Elle fournit ensuite quelques applications scientifiques découlant de l'interprétation de ces mesures comme la mise en évidence des fortes variations des bilans de masse en surface qui traduisent de fortes variations des flux radiatifs et turbulents de l'atmosphère au cours des dernières décennies, ou encore une meilleure compréhension de la dynamique glaciaire par interprétation directe des mesures de fluctuations glaciaires ou par utilisation de ces dernières pour valider et exploiter les résultats d'un modèle d'écoulement glaciaire.

International audience; A spatially-distributed snow/ice model is used to simulate the surface mass balance of the Saint Sorlin Glacier (French Alps) over the 1981–2004 period. The modeled mass balance globally reproduces field data except over places where, because of the scarcity of measurements, small-scale features as proposed by the model are smoothed out by the data interpolation. Both measured and simulated mass balance fields are then used to force a 2-D ice flow model and comparison of respective results show similar large-scale glacier flow dynamics. On the other hand, at a smaller scale, the present-day ice distribution computed from the modeled mass balance field sometimes deviates from that obtained with the interpolated field mass balance. It particularly offers a better match to observations by succeeding in reproducing a specific deglaciation pattern in the upper part of the glacier. These preliminary results led us to consider the possibility of substituting modeled mass balance series to measured ones, especially when modeling the future of the glacier. This latter approach is thus applied to simulate the glacier response under the IPCC SRESB1 scenario. Results show a rapid decay leading to a total disappearance of the glacier by the year 2070.

International audience; This paper analyses the impact of climate change over the last 100 years on high-elevation glaciated areas of the Mont Blanc range, comprising ice fields covering the top of the Mont Blanc (4808 m) and Dôme du Goûter (4300 m) areas. Surface ablation is negligible for these high-elevation areas and the surface mass balance is mainly controlled by snow accumulation. At Dôme du Goûter, ice fluxes have been calculated through two transversal sections by two independent methods in order to assess long-term surface accumulation. A comparison between these results and recent accumulation observations, together with the strong relationship between valley precipitation and snow accumulation, suggests that surface accumulation rates did not change significantly over the entire 20th century. Moreover, the small ice thickness changes, less than 3 m on the average, observed at Mont Blanc and Dôme du Goûter between 1905 and 2005 clearly reveal that these high-elevation glaciated areas have not been significantly affected by climate change over the last 100 years.

[1] Over fifty years of cumulative annual mass balance data for several glaciers in the Alps shows similar fluctuations which seem to provide evidence of a common climatic signal. Separate winter and summer mass balance measurements from the Claridenfirn (glacier in Switzerland) since 1914 and the Sarennes glacier (France) since 1949 show that (1) the annual mass balance is primarily driven by the summer mass balance term and (2) melting rate variations with time are very similar for these two glaciers located 290 km apart. The increase in the ablation rate of 0.5 cm w.e. day−1 between the two periods 1954–1981 and 1982–2002 over these two glaciers corresponds to a 20 Wm−2 rise in the energy flux at the glacier surface. These results suggest that a common summer melting rate change may have affected the Alps as a whole. Detailed observations on the Sarennes glacier show that the origin of this strong increase in summer ablation since 1982 is not only a rise in the summer melting rate, but also an increase in the ablation period during the months of September and October.

At a local scale, travel-time tomography requires a simultaneous inversion of earthquake positions and velocity structure. We applied a joint iterative inversion scheme where medium parameters and hypocenter parameters were inverted simultaneously. At each step of the inversion, rays between hypocenters and stations were traced, new partial derivatives of travel-time were estimated and scaling between parameters was performed as well. The large sparse linear system modified by the scaling was solved by the LSQR method at each iteration. We compared performances of two different forward techniques. Our first approach was a fast ray tracing based on a paraxial method to solve the two-point boundary value problem. The rays connect sources and stations in a velocity structure described by a 3D B-spline interpolation over a regular grid. The second approach is the finite-difference solution of the eikonal equation with a 3D linear interpolation over a regular grid. The partial derivatives are estimated differently depending on the interpolation method. The reconstructed images are sensitive to the spatial variation of the partial derivatives shown by synthetic examples. We aldo found that a scaling between velocity and hypocenter parameters involved in the linear system to be solved is important in recovering accurate amplitudes of anomalies. This scaling was estimated to be five through synthetic examples with the real configuration of stations and sources. We also found it necessary to scale Pand S velocities in order to recover better amplitudes of S velocity anomaly. The crustal velocity structure of a 50X50X20 km domain near Patras in the Gulf of Corinth (Greece) was recovered using microearthquake data. These data were recorded during a field experiment in 1991 where a dense network of 60 digital stations was deployed. These microearthquakes were widely distributed under the Gulf of Corinth and enabled us to perform a reliable tomography of first arrival P and S travel-times. The obtained images of this seismically active zone show a south/north asymmetry in agreement with the tectonic context.
