Introduction Many cardiovascular parameters of sport adaptation have become an area of detailed research in recent decades. However, details of local circulatory and metabolic processes ongoing in the working muscles during physical exercise need to be revealed. Purpose Our aim was to extend cardiopulmonary exercise testing with near-infrared spectroscopy measurements to focus on observing local changes in the contracting muscles during running. Methods Mixed muscle oxygen saturation values (SmO2) measured in the left vastus lateralis muscle of athletes were analyzed by near-infrared spectroscopy during vita maxima treadmill cardiopulmonary exercise testing with 2-min fingertip lactate measurements. Body composition analysis was carried out with bioimpedance method. One-way repeated measures ANOVA, Tukey post-hoc test, Shapiro–Wilk test and Pearson correlation were used for statistical analysis. Results The results of 66 elite athletes (male: 40; age: 17.9±3.6 y; training: 17.7±6.6 h/w; water polo player: 56, wrestler: 8, basketball player: 2) were analyzed. The 10-second averaged values of the measured saturation values were examined at rest (65.8±11.1%), at the anaerobic threshold (40.7±22.8%), at maximum load (30.2±20.5%) and after 5 minutes of cool-down (70.9±12.8%). Significant differences were measured between the four measurement time points in all pairings. A negative correlation was found between the achieved maximal oxygen uptake and the muscle oxygen saturation values measured at the anaerobic threshold and at the maximal load (respectively r=−0.30, p Conclusions By our results, muscle oxygen saturation measurements can be reliably applied during exercise physiological measurements. During exercise, muscle oxygen saturation values negatively correlated with oxygen uptake. At the cool-down phase, a rebound effect could be observed compared to the resting measurements. On the identical limb, the higher the muscle mass was, the higher muscle desaturation could be measured. This easy-to-perform test provides insight into muscle metabolism processes and can help with training planning and athlete follow-up. Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text., Background: Cardiac involvement among hospitalized patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is common and associated with adverse outcomes. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and clinical implications of COVID-19 cardiac involvement in young competitive athletes. Methods: In this prospective, multicenter, observational cohort study with data from 42 colleges and universities, we assessed the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of COVID-19 cardiac involvement among collegiate athletes in the United States. Data were collected from September 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020. The primary outcome was the prevalence of definite, probable, or possible COVID-19 cardiac involvement based on imaging definitions adapted from the Updated Lake Louise Imaging Criteria. Secondary outcomes included the diagnostic yield of cardiac testing, predictors for cardiac involvement, and adverse cardiovascular events or hospitalizations. Results: Among 19 378 athletes tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, 3018 (mean age, 20 years [SD, 1 year]; 32% female) tested positive and underwent cardiac evaluation. A total of 2820 athletes underwent at least 1 element of cardiac triad testing (12-lead ECG, troponin, transthoracic echocardiography) followed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) if clinically indicated. In contrast, primary screening CMR was performed in 198 athletes. Abnormal findings suggestive of SARS-CoV-2 cardiac involvement were detected by ECG (21 of 2999 [0.7%]), cardiac troponin (24 of 2719 [0.9%]), and transthoracic echocardiography (24 of 2556 [0.9%]). Definite, probable, or possible SARS-CoV-2 cardiac involvement was identified in 21 of 3018 (0.7%) athletes, including 15 of 2820 (0.5%) who underwent clinically indicated CMR (n=119) and 6 of 198 (3.0%) who underwent primary screening CMR. Accordingly, the diagnostic yield of CMR for SARS-CoV-2 cardiac involvement was 4.2 times higher for a clinically indicated CMR (15 of 119 [12.6%]) versus a primary screening CMR (6 of 198 [3.0%]). After adjustment for race and sex, predictors of SARS-CoV-2 cardiac involvement included cardiopulmonary symptoms (odds ratio, 3.1 [95% CI, 1.2, 7.7]) or at least 1 abnormal triad test result (odds ratio, 37.4 [95% CI, 13.3, 105.3]). Five (0.2%) athletes required hospitalization for noncardiac complications of COVID-19. During clinical surveillance (median follow-up, 113 days [interquartile range=90 146]), there was 1 (0.03%) adverse cardiac event, likely unrelated to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 infection among young competitive athletes is associated with a low prevalence of cardiac involvement and a low risk of clinical events in short-term follow-up.

Although underwater photogrammetry has become widely adopted, there are still significant unresolved issues that are worthy of attention. This article focuses on the 3D model generation of underwater shipwrecks and intends explicitly to address the problem of dealing with sub-optimal datasets. Even if the definition of best practices and standards to be adopted during the acquisition phase appears to be crucial, there is a massive amount of data gathered so far by professionals and the scientific community all over the world that cannot be ignored. The compelling idea is to attempt to achieve the best reconstruction results possible, even from sub-optimal or less-than-ideal image datasets. This work focuses on the investigation of different strategies and approaches for balancing the quality of the photogrammetric products, without neglecting their reliability concerning the surveyed object. The case study of this research is the Mandalay MHT, a 34 m long steel-hulled auxiliary schooner that sank in 1966 and now lies in the Biscayne National Park (Florida - USA). The dataset has been provided by the Submerged Resources Center (SRC) of the US National Park Service, in order to develop an experimental image enhancement method functional to the virtualization and visualization of the generated products, as a part of a sustainable, affordable, and reliable method of studying submerged artefacts and sites. The original images have been processed using different image enhancement approaches, and the outputs have been compared and analysed.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms, representing approximately 1%-2% of all primary gastrointestinal malignancies. Incidental GISTs are often less than 1 cm when discovered and have been reported predominantly in obese patients undergoing surgery for other medical indications. We present the rare case of a large incidental GIST in a nonobese patient with acutely symptomatic nephrolithiasis. Large GISTs may be treated with neoadjuvant imatinib mesylate to reduce tumor size prior to surgery, though some tumors may experience little change in size despite effective treatment. Treatment response for GISTs can be monitored via imaging studies, such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, but computed tomography is generally preferred over magnetic resonance imaging. Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) exhibit low surface brightness, but their optical extent is comparable to Milky Way-type galaxies. Due to their peculiar properties, it remains ambiguous whether UDGs are the descendants of massive galaxies or they are puffed-up dwarf galaxies. In this work, we explore a population of 404 UDGs in the Coma cluster to study their origin and AGN occupation fraction. To constrain the formation scenario of UDGs, we probe the X-ray emission originating from diffuse gas and from the population of unresolved low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) residing in globular clusters (GCs). It is expected that both the luminosity of the hot gas and the number of globular clusters and hence the luminosity from GC-LMXBs are proportional to the total dark matter halo mass. We do not detect statistically significant emission from the hot gas or from GC-LMXBs. The upper limits on the X-ray luminosities suggest that the bulk of the UDGs reside in low-mass dark matter halos, implying that they are genuine dwarf galaxies. This conclusion agrees with our previous results obtained for isolated UDGs, arguing that UDGs are a homogenous population of galaxies. To probe the AGN occupation fraction of UDGs, we cross-correlate the position of detected X-ray sources in the Coma cluster with the position of UDGs. We identify two UDGs that have a luminous X-ray source at 3.0" and 3.2" from the center of the galaxies, which could be off-center AGN. However, Monte Carlo simulations suggest that one of these sources could be the result of spatial coincidence with a background AGN. The analysis of current and future cosmological surveys of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) at high redshift depends on the accurate photometric classification of the SN events detected. Generating realistic simulations of photometric SN surveys constitutes an essential step for training and testing photometric classification algorithms, and for correcting biases introduced by selection effects and contamination arising from core-collapse SNe in the photometric SN Ia samples. We use published SN time-series spectrophotometric templates, rates, luminosity functions, and empirical relationships between SNe and their host galaxies to construct a framework for simulating photometric SN surveys. We present this framework in the context of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) 5-yr photometric SN sample, comparing our simulations of DES with the observed DES transient populations. We demonstrate excellent agreement in many distributions, including Hubble residuals, between our simulations and data. We estimate the core collapse fraction expected in the DES SN sample after selection requirements are applied and before photometric classification. After testing different modelling choices and astrophysical assumptions underlying our simulation, we find that the predicted contamination varies from 7.2 to 11.7 per cent, with an average of 8.8 per cent and an r.m.s. of 1.1 per cent. Our simulations are the first to reproduce the observed photometric SN and host galaxy properties in high-redshift surveys without fine-tuning the input parameters. The simulation methods presented here will be a critical component of the cosmology analysis of the DES photometric SN Ia sample: correcting for biases arising from contamination, and evaluating the associated systematic uncertainty.

When agencies make decisions that are binding on the public, they must provide public notice, accept and consider public comments, and provide explanations for their final decisions. Their actions are then subject to judicial review to ensure that they acted within the scope of their authority and the decision was not arbitrary or capricious. The President, however, is not subject to such constraints, even when exercising purely statutory authority, i.e., acting as the “Statutory President.” That autonomy is due to the Supreme Court’s holding in Franklin v. Massachusetts that the President is not an “agency” under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). Thanks to Franklin, the President exercises delegated authority to make policy decisions that have enormous implications for the public without the public involvement, transparency, deliberation, and political and judicial accountability that we demand when agencies make such decisions. This article is the first to take Franklin v. Massachusetts head on. It demonstrates that the Court’s 1992 holding conflicts with the plain language and history of the APA; it explains the flaws in the Court’s constitutional analysis; and it presents the normative case for treating the Statutory President like any other agency. Having shown that Franklin was wrong, this article sketches a new model for treating the Statutory President like an “agency” under the APA. It concludes by explaining how both the process and outcome of Trump v. Hawaii, in which the Supreme Court upheld the President’s order barring immigration from certain Muslim-majority nations, would have been different had the President been subject to the APA.

Background The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) is a child weight monitoring system in England, taking place in the first and final years of primary school. Many local authorities consider it important to inform parents if their child is overweight, and do so by letter alongside the offer of support and advice. Such letters have been met with mixed reactions from parents, but research seeking to better understand parents’ responses is often limited by reliance on survey data and low participation rates. This study aimed to collect a broad variety of perspectives on the programme by analyzing views expressed in parent-to-parent discussions posted online. Methods UK-based online parenting fora were used to identify discussion threads based around the NCMP between 2010 and 2017. Thirty-one discussion threads from two parent fora were identified. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes in these data. Results The primary themes identified related to (1) the legitimacy of feedback and judgement from health professionals, (2) the relative importance of collecting population level data above individual preferences, and (3) risks versus benefits of having conversations with children about weight. Most threads adopted an ‘argument, counter-argument’ format, providing two sides to each issue raised. Information and opinions consistent with public health messages were frequently provided, such as how data are used, that feedback is intended to be helpful, and the importance of collecting national data. There was little evidence of individual parents shifting their views in response to others’ arguments. Conclusions This study provides novel insight into peer-to-peer debates about the NCMP, including the arguments parents find convincing and acceptable for and against a national programme to weigh children and provide feedback to parents about their weight. Online fora were used as an opportunity to express criticism or distress, but also to seek advice from peers regarding concerns about whether or not to opt-out. Thus, both general issues related to the legitimacy of population screening and outcomes for individual children were of concern to parents.

Calcite-raft precipitation was monitored in three Yucatan cenotes (Rainbow, Feno and Monkey Dust) over a 2-year period. Site-specific variables including water temperature, relative humidity, water level and salinity were recorded as well as rainfall (Cozumel). Calcite-raft surface area was monitored through trail cameras that collected photographs every 60 min. Accumulation rates were recorded using sediment traps that were collected in May and December of each year. Calcite-raft surface area was calculated using an image segmentation procedure that identified the boundary of objects (edge detection) that share certain pixel characteristics, removed non-points of interest and measured the sum of the area covered by the raft material. Results show that large rainfall events have a regional effect on the meteoric water mass (i.e. salinity), as well as the precipitation of calcite rafts. The large rainfalls and increased inflows cause dilution of the CaCO3 supersaturated meteoric water mass and cause increased flow hindering calcite-raft precipitation for days to weeks after the rainfall. Raft precipitation gradually returns with deceasing flow after the event, and stagnation allows the recurrence of CaCO3 supersaturation and accumulation of nucleation particles. Small rainfalls did not seem to have the same effect, as slower percolation of rainwater through the epikarst would be more saturated and micro-topographic relief may isolate the water pools from the lower flow. The sediment trap data shows that calcite rafts accumulate relatively constantly throughout the year in all three sites. Sedimentation rates from Feno and Monkey Dust responded to seasonal changes in surface-water disturbance associated with rainfall (wet and dry), although Rainbow didn't show any seasonality likely due to other site-specific factors affecting water disturbance (e.g. bats, wind).

In this study, the potential metal adsorption properties of a Romanian natural and activated (by chemical, thermal and thermo-chemical treatments) zeolite was tested for further use in water treatment. The structural changes of zeolite after activation were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) analysis. Adsorption experiments were carried out for 72 h at room temperature, using a zeolite/liquid ratio of 1 g/50 mL using highly contaminated surface and wastewaters. The metal concentrations (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu) were determinate before and after the adsorption experiments using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Although, the chemical and thermo-chemical activation methods had a positive effect on the CEC values, the FT-IR and XRD analyses did not indicated any notable changes in the zeolite structure. The obtained results showed that the highest metal removal efficiency was reached for the thermally activated zeolite. After 72h, the metal removal efficiency ranged between 12.8 and 100% in the case of surface waters and between 1.55 and 59.2% in the case of wastewaters.

Two cores from calcite rafts deposits located in Cenote Ich Balam and Hoyo Negro were dated and analyzed for 87Sr/86Sr, δ18O, δ13C, Sr/Ca and Cl/Ca. The geochemical records show changing aquifer salinity spanning the last ∼ 8.5 cal kyrs BP and interrelationships with Holocene climate trends (wet and dry periods). During the wet mid-Holocene, the salinity of the meteoric Water Mass (WM; at 7.8–8.3 cal kyrs BP) was relatively high at 1.5–2.7 ppt and then became less saline (1.0–1.5 ppt) during the last ∼ 7000 yrs as climate became progressively drier. High salinity of the meteoric WM during the wet mid-Holocene is attributed to increased turbulent mixing between the meteoric and underlying marine WM. Increased precipitation, in terms of amount, frequency, and intensity (e.g. hurricanes) causes higher flow of meteoric water towards the coast and mixing at the halocline, a phenomenon recorded with recent instrumental monitoring of the aquifer. Conversely, during dry periods reduced precipitation and flow in the meteoric WM would result in lower salinity. Karst properties and Holocene sea-level rise also seem to have an effect on the aquifer. When the regionally extensive network of shallow cave passages (∼ 10–12 m water depth) are flooded at ∼ 8000 cal yrs BP, there is a rapid shift in salinity. This study demonstrates that calcite raft deposits can be used as paleo-environmental recorders documenting the effects of sea level and climate change on aquifer condition.

We report on measurements of the salinity and temperature in the Yax Chen cave system on the Yuacatan peninsula. This paper is submitted together with Kovacs et al. (2017). Kovacs et al. focuses on the salinity levels of the meteoric lens, while this paper uses the observed results to elucidate the hydrodynamics. The cave passages have water depths on the order of 10 m, with flow on the order of ten centimeters a second, and as such is a hydrodynamic, as opposed to a porous, system. The measurements reveal that episodes of significant mixing between the fresh meteoric lens and the underlying salty water are driven by meteorological events (e.g., Hurricane Rina in 2011, and the twin Hurricanes Ingrid and Manuel in 2013). We find evidence that after the hurricanes in 2013, the water column remains unstable for several months. Through wavelet analysis, we find that the marine Water Mass (WM) exhibits much less low period activity compared to the meteoric WM. We hypothesize that the open cenotes are locations of high mixing intensity, with turbulent fronts propagating away from the sites of direct mixing into the cave network. We perform laboratory experiments and numerical simulations to explore this phenomenon, and find that mixing preferentially occurs on the flanks of regions of strong, stable density stratification (i.e., on the periphery of pycnoclines), and leads to entrainment of fluid into the turbulent region. Using high resolution direct numerical simulation, we explore the detailed manner in which turbulent entrainment can drive flow toward the mixing region, and lead to mixing of passive tracers. Finally, we discuss the implications of these results for the mixing of passive tracers, such as suspended chemicals.

There is a lack of information on aquifer dynamics in anchialine systems, especially in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Most of our knowledge is based on “spot” measurements of the aquifer with no long-term temporal monitoring. In this study spanning four years (2012–2016), sensors (water depth and conductivity (salinity)) were deployed and positioned (−9 and −10 m) in the meteoric Water Mass (WM) close to the transition with the marine WM (halocline) in 2 monitoring sites within the Yax Chen cave system to investigate precipitation effects on the salinity of the coastal aquifer. The results show variation in salinity ( 95 mm) such as Hurricane Ingrid (2013) and Tropical Storm Hanna (2014) shows meteoric water mass salinity rapidly increasing (approx. 6.39 to >8.6 ppt), but these perturbations have a shorter duration (weeks and days). Wavelet analysis of the salinity record indicates seasonal mixing effects in agreement with the wet and dry periods, but also seasonal effects of tidal mixing (meteoric and marine water masses) occurring on shorter time scales (diurnal and semi-diurnal). These results demonstrate that the salinity of the freshwater lens is influenced by precipitation and turbulent mixing with the marine WM. The salinity response is scaled with precipitation; larger more intense rainfall events (>95 mm) create a larger response in terms of the magnitude and duration of the salinity perturbation (>1 ppt). The balance of precipitation and its intensity controls the temporal and spatial patterning of meteoric WM salinity.

Purpose To investigate the ability of high field ex vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to localize prostate cancer (PCa) and to predict the margin status in fresh radical prostatectomy (RP) specimens using histology as the reference standard. Materials and Methods This Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved study had written informed consent. Patients with biopsy-proved PCa and a diagnostic multiparametric 3T MRI examination of the prostate prior to undergoing RP were prospectively included. A custom-made container provided reference between the 7T ex vivo MRI obtained from fresh RP specimens and histological slicing. On ex vivo MRI, PCa was localized and the presence of positive surgical margins was determined in a double-reading session. These findings were compared with histological findings obtained from completely cut, whole-mount embedded, prostate specimens. Results In 12 RP specimens, histopathology revealed 36 PCa lesions, of which 17 (47%) and 20 (56%) were correlated with the ex vivo MRI in the first and second reading session, respectively. Nine of 12 (75%) index lesions were localized in the first session, in the second 10 of 12 (83%). Seven and 8 lesions of 11 lesions with Gleason score >6 and >0.5 cc were localized in the first and second session, respectively. In the first session none of the four histologically positive surgical margins (sensitivity 0%) and 9 of 13 negative margins (specificity 69%) were detected. In second session the sensitivity and specificity were 25% and 88%, respectively. Conclusion Ex vivo MRI enabled accurate localization of PCa in fresh RP specimens, and the technique provided information on the margin status with high specificity. Geochemical analysis of sediment samples can be used to characterize between- and within-lake variability and provide insights into lake chemistry, depositional processes and contamination sources. The number of samples for geochemical studies is restricted by cost, sample volume required, and the destructive nature of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, instrumental neutron activation analysis, or wavelength dispersive x-ray fluorescence. Core scanners that incorporate energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, such as the Cox Itrax-XRF core scanner, have high through-put and can be used to produce high-quality geochemical datasets at low cost without destroying sample material. Here we describe a new analysis vessel that enables rapid, non-destructive Itrax-XRF analysis of discrete sediment samples.

Supermassive Black Holes (BHs) residing in brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) are overly massive when considering the local relationships between the BH mass and stellar bulge mass or velocity dispersion. Due to the location of these BHs within the cluster, large-scale cluster processes may aid the growth of BHs in BCGs. In this work, we study a sample of 71 galaxy clusters to explore the relationship between the BH mass, stellar bulge mass of the BCG, and the total gravitating mass of the host clusters. Due to difficulties in obtaining dynamically measured BH masses in distant galaxies, we use the Fundamental Plane relationship of BHs to infer their masses. We utilize X-ray observations taken by $Chandra$ to measure the temperature of the intra-cluster medium (ICM), which is a proxy for the total mass of the cluster. We analyze the $\rm M_{BH}-kT$ and $\rm M_{BH}-M_{Bulge}$ relationships and establish the best-fitting power laws:$\log_{10}(M_{\rm BH} /10^9 M_{\odot})=-0.35+2.08 \log_{10}(kT / 1 \rm keV)$ and $\log_{10}(\rm M_{BH}/10^9M_{\odot})= -1.09+ 1.92 \log_{10}(M_{\rm bulge}/10^{11}M_{\odot})$. Both relations are comparable with that established earlier for a sample of brightest group/cluster galaxies with dynamically measured BH masses. Although both the $\rm M_{BH}-kT$ and the $\rm M_{BH}-M_{Bulge}$ relationships exhibit large intrinsic scatter, based on Monte Carlo simulations we conclude that dominant fraction of the scatter originates from the Fundamental Plane relationship. We split the sample into cool core and non-cool core resembling clusters, but do not find statistically significant differences in the $\rm M_{BH}-kT$ relation. Flares and CMEs can have deleterious effects on their surroundings: they can erode atmospheres of orbiting planets over time and also have high importance in stellar evolution. Most of the CME detections in the literature are single events found serendipitously sparse for statistical investigation. We aimed to gather a large amount of spectral data of M-dwarfs to drastically increase the number of known events to make statistical analysis possible in order to study the properties of potential stellar CMEs. Using archive data we investigated asymmetric features of Balmer-lines, that could indicate the Doppler-signature of ejected material. Of more than 5500 spectra we found 478 with line asymmetries--including nine larger events--on 25 objects, with 1.2-19.6 events/day on objects with line asymmetries. Most events are connected with enhanced Balmer-line peaks, suggesting these are connected to flares similar to solar events. Detected speeds mostly do not reach surface escape velocity: the typical observed maximum velocities are in the order of 100-300km/s , while the typical masses of the ejecta were in the order of $10^{15}-10^{18}$g. Statistical analysis suggests that events are more frequent on cooler stars with stronger chromospheric activity. Detected maximum velocities are lower than those observed on the Sun, while event rates were somewhat lower than we could expect from the solar case. These findings may support the idea that most of the CMEs could be suppressed by strong magnetic field. Alternatively, it is possible that we can observe only an early low-coronal phase before CMEs are accelerated at higher altitudes. Our findings could indicate that later-type, active dwarfs could be a safer environment for exoplanetary systems CME-wise than previously thought, and atmosphere loss due to radiation effects would play a stronger role in exoplanetary atmosphere evolution than CMEs., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted in A&A. It is an extraordinary time in the United States government. Presidents increasingly govern unilaterally. Confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominees have become enormously contentious. A significant portion of the government shut down for over a month in 2019. This article discusses one of the factors that contributes to all of these phenomena: congressional inertia. Congress’s inability to make law has shifted power in the U.S. government to the President and the Supreme Court. If we are to avoid sliding into tyranny, Congress must find a way to recover its strength.

Recent advancements in the imaging of low-surface-brightness objects revealed numerous ultra-diffuse galaxies in the local Universe. These peculiar objects are unusually extended and faint: their effective radii are comparable to the Milky Way, but their surface brightnesses are lower than that of dwarf galaxies. Their ambiguous properties motivate two potential formation scenarios: the "failed" Milky Way and the dwarf galaxy scenario. In this paper, for the first time, we employ X-ray observations to test these formation scenarios on a sample of isolated, low-surface-brightness galaxies. Since hot gas X-ray luminosities correlate with the dark matter halo mass, "failed" Milky Way-type galaxies, which reside in massive dark matter halos, are expected to have significantly higher X-ray luminosities than dwarf galaxies, which reside in low-mass dark matter halos. We perform X-ray photometry on a subset of low-surface-brightness galaxies identified in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru survey, utilizing the XMM-Newton XXL North survey. We find that none of the individual galaxies show significant X-ray emission. By co-adding the signal of individual galaxies, the stacked galaxies remain undetected and we set an X-ray luminosity upper limit of ${L_{\rm{0.3-1.2keV}}\leq6.2 \times 10^{37} (d/65 \rm{Mpc})^2 \ \rm{erg \ s^{-1}}}$ for an average isolated low-surface-brightness galaxy. This upper limit is about 40 times lower than that expected in a galaxy with a massive dark matter halo, implying that the majority of isolated low-surface-brightness galaxies reside in dwarf-size dark matter halos., 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication to The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are explosive events that occur basically daily on the Sun. It is thought that these events play a crucial role in the angular momentum and mass loss of late-type stars, and also shape the environment in which planets form and live. Stellar CMEs can be detected in optical spectra in the Balmer lines, especially in Halpha, as blue-shifted extra emission/absorption. To increase the detection probability one can monitor young open clusters, in which the stars are due to their youth still rapid rotators, and thus magnetically active and likely to exhibit a large number of CMEs. Using ESO facilities and the Nordic Optical Telescope we have obtained time series of multi-object spectroscopic observations of late-type stars in six open clusters with ages ranging from 15 Myrs to 300 Myrs. Additionally, we have studied archival data of numerous active stars. These observations will allow us to obtain information on the occurrence rate of CMEs in late-type stars with different ages and spectral types. Colorectal cancers typically metastasize to the lymph nodes, liver or lungs. Metastasis to the heart is rare and although a few cases of cardiac metastases from colon cancer are described in the literature, cases of metastatic rectal cancer to the heart are far fewer. A 69-year-old woman with a history of rectal adenocarcinoma treated with neo-adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation, followed by resection and adjuvant chemotherapy, presented with increasing dyspnea on exertion and lower extremity edema 5 years after oncology follow-up. Echocardiography revealed a mass within the right atrium, which was biopsied and found to be consistent with metastatic rectal adenocarcinoma and a thrombus. The patient was deemed to be a poor surgical candidate given her co-morbidities and overall prognosis. Chemotherapy was offered and refused by the patient. The medical literature has a paucity of similar cases of rectal adenocarcinoma metastasizing to the right atrium. Further studies are needed to help guide standardized treatment options. Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) residing in the centers of galaxy clusters are typically quenched giant ellipticals. A recent study hinted that star-forming galaxies with large disks, so-called superluminous spirals and lenticulars, are the BCGs of a subset of galaxy clusters. Based on the existing optical data it was not possible to constrain whether the superluminous disk galaxies reside at the center of galaxy clusters. In this work, we utilize XMM-Newton X-ray observations of five galaxy clusters to map the morphology of the intracluster medium (ICM), characterize the galaxy clusters, determine the position of the cluster center, and measure the offset between the cluster center and the superluminous disk galaxies. We demonstrate that one superluminous lenticular galaxy, 2MASX J10405643-0103584, resides at the center of a low-mass ($M_{\rm 500} = 10^{14} \ \rm{M_{\odot}}$) galaxy cluster. This represents the first conclusive evidence that a superluminous disk galaxy is the central BCG of a galaxy cluster. We speculate that the progenitor of 2MASX J10405643-0103584 was an elliptical galaxy, whose extended disk was re-formed due to the merger of galaxies. We exclude the possibility that the other four superluminous disk galaxies reside at the center of galaxy clusters, as their projected distance from the cluster center is $150-1070$ kpc, which corresponds to $(0.27-1.18)R_{\rm 500}$. The question presented in this case is whether a property owner may file a federal taking claim in federal court without first seeking compensation under state law in state court. This brief responds to two points in the United States’ brief as amicus curiae. The Solicitor General suggests that the Court should exercise jurisdiction over petitioner’s state-law inverse condemnation claim under 28 U.S.C. § 1331. The Court should reject this suggestion. This case is not in the “special and small category of cases” in which a state law cause of action is held to “arise under” federal law. See Gunn v. Minton, 568 U.S. 251, 258 (2013) (quoting Empire Healthchoice Assurance, Inc. v. McVeigh, 547 U.S. 677, 699 (2006)). The Solicitor General also raises the possibility that petitioner may pursue a claim directly under the Fourteenth Amendment in federal court. The Court should not decide this complex question here because it was not aired in the lower courts and because Pennsylvania law provides petitioner a statutory cause of action to recover compensation. See 26 Pa. Cons. Stat. Ann. § 502(c) (2006). If the Court opts to address this issue, it should hold that petitioner may not pursue a cause of action directly under the Fourteenth Amendment. Implying a cause of action under Section 1 of the Fourteenth Amendment would conflict with Section 5, which delegates authority to enforce the Amendment to Congress. Even if Section 1 provides a cause of action in some circumstances, it does not in cases like the one at bar in which state law provides an adequate means of redress.

The unitary executive is no longer a theory; it is real. The President operates on the premise that, because all executive power is vested in him, his appointees merely assist him in performing his constitutional duty. The rise of the unitary executive is not a new phenomenon, but it has reached a new pinnacle. This article demonstrates that among the contributing causes to that climb are the judicial rules about rulemaking. The provisions governing agency rulemaking in the Administrative Procedure Act of 1946 are barebones. Congress intended to leave much to agency discretion, preferring agency decisionmaking to the autocracy recently defeated in Europe. In the 70 years since then, Congress has not revised the APA’s rulemaking provisions significantly. In the absence of legislative updating, the courts stepped in and imposed rulemaking requirements that contradict the APA’s text and history. Rulemaking has become difficult at least in part due to the increasingly onerous judicial rules about rulemaking. As a consequence, agencies are unable to respond to elections and changed circumstances in a timely and effective manner. In recent years, as Congress and agencies have lost their policymaking agility, the President has stepped in to make key decisions himself. The judicial rules about rulemaking were well intentioned, but their unintended consequences have reached a frightening extreme. Our nation is moving toward the kind of executive authoritarianism the APA was designed to avoid. The courts should retreat and take refuge in the text and history of the APA until Congress amends it, and Congress should require rulemaking procedures that are effective, but not overly burdensome.

In recent years, the President of the Unites States has assumed increasing power. Among other things, the President now makes decisions that federal administrative agencies previously would have made. This trend is not new, but it has reached a new height in the current administration. Some of the reasons for this development are obvious: the Congress’s lawmaking ability has atrophied, and technology and the media encourage the President to take credit for federal policy decisions. Just as Congress’s inaction contributes to this trend, so too does agency inaction. When agencies cannot make or change policy in a timely and efficient manner, the President is more inclined to do it himself. Agency rulemaking has become extremely resource-intensive making them increasingly unable to respond to changing circumstances in a timely fashion. That is due in part to requirements imposed by the Congress, the President, and the courts. Though well-intentioned, the judicial rules about rulemaking are particularly problematic. Many of those rules conflict with the Administrative Procedure Act (APA), the primary statute governing federal agency procedure and judicial review. That conflict is of great concern because the passage of the APA in 1946 marked a significant moment in deliberative democracy: after years of debate among the Congress, the Executive Branch, and the public, Congress passed the APA unanimously, and the President signed it into law. The APA balanced multiple values, concerns, and variables. When the courts to disturb that balance, they raise exceptional separation-of-powers and political-accountability concerns. The judicial rules governing agency rulemaking also are problematic because they have unanticipated consequences. Of the three branches of the U.S. government, the courts are the least capable of considering various positions and proposals and predicting which approach to administrative policymaking will be most effective. Thus, their rules seeking to enhance transparency, accountability, and public participation in administrative processes yield other results as well. Among other things, the courts’ rules about rulemaking have fomented the growth of authoritarianism by making agency rulemaking more difficult. Changing times require changing policy. Congress’s policymaking ability, however, is severely compromised, and federal agencies are overburdened by procedural requirements. Thus, the President has stepped into the policymaking breach. The courts should recognize their role in the changing power structure of the U.S. government and adhere to the careful balance achieved in the APA. They should require agencies to adhere to the APA’s requirements without overburdening them.

To investigate the ability of high field ex vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to localize prostate cancer (PCa) and to predict the margin status in fresh radical prostatectomy (RP) specimens using histology as the reference standard.This Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved study had written informed consent. Patients with biopsy-proved PCa and a diagnostic multiparametric 3T MRI examination of the prostate prior to undergoing RP were prospectively included. A custom-made container provided reference between the 7T ex vivo MRI obtained from fresh RP specimens and histological slicing. On ex vivo MRI, PCa was localized and the presence of positive surgical margins was determined in a double-reading session. These findings were compared with histological findings obtained from completely cut, whole-mount embedded, prostate specimens.In 12 RP specimens, histopathology revealed 36 PCa lesions, of which 17 (47%) and 20 (56%) were correlated with the ex vivo MRI in the first and second reading session, respectively. Nine of 12 (75%) index lesions were localized in the first session, in the second 10 of 12 (83%). Seven and 8 lesions of 11 lesions with Gleason score6 and0.5 cc were localized in the first and second session, respectively. In the first session none of the four histologically positive surgical margins (sensitivity 0%) and 9 of 13 negative margins (specificity 69%) were detected. In second session the sensitivity and specificity were 25% and 88%, respectively.Ex vivo MRI enabled accurate localization of PCa in fresh RP specimens, and the technique provided information on the margin status with high specificity.1 Technical Efficacy: Stage 1 J. Lakes and speleothems from Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula have been used extensively over the past decades for paleoclimate studies, however aquifer condition and its response to climate change has received little attention. Cenotes (sinkholes) and coastal caves have been shown to record the paleohydrology of the aquifer, but there is little information on sedimentation in these cave systems and its response to climate change. Newly developed μXRF instrumentation for the analysis of cores can achieve subannual resolution due to small measurement increments, but short period studies examining weathering inputs and rainfall have not yet been undertaken, hindering paleoenvironmental interpretations of lake and cave sediment records. This study examines the spatial and temporal relationship of cave sediment geochemistry in the anchialine cave system of Yax Chen (Quintana Roo, Mexico). Sediment traps (n = 51) were placed at seventeen stations along the 2.7 km flooded cave system, which transitions from mangrove to upland forest terrain, with cenotes of variable size and frequency along its length. Sediment traps were collected every ~6 months from May 2013–May 2017 along with rainfall and groundwater level data. There are distinct responses of lithogenic (Fe, Ti, Sr - limestone weathering) and biogenic influenced (Si, K, S - phytoplankton and mangrove sediment) elements in the sediment samples associated with seasonal rainfall and hurricanes. While lithogenic elements (Ti/K) show a direct relationship seasonal rainfall, the sedimentation of biologically influenced (Si/Ti) elements exhibit a 6–12 month lagged response with large rainfalls such as Hurricane Ingrid in 2013 and other tropical storms throughout the study period.

Based on constraints from Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the cosmic microwave background, the baryon content of the high-redshift Universe can be precisely determined. However, at low redshift, about one-third of the baryons remain unaccounted for, which poses the long-standing missing baryon problem. The missing baryons are believed to reside in large-scale filaments in the form of warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). In this work, we employ a novel stacking approach to explore the hot phases of the WHIM. Specifically, we utilize the 470 ks Chandra LETG data of the luminous quasar, H1821+643, along with previous measurements of UV absorption line systems and spectroscopic redshift measurements of galaxies toward the quasar's sightline. We repeatedly blueshift and stack the X-ray spectrum of the quasar corresponding to the redshifts of the 17 absorption line systems. Thus, we obtain a stacked spectrum with $8.0$ Ms total exposure, which allows us to probe X-ray absorption lines with unparalleled sensitivity. Based on the stacked data, we detect an OVII absorption line that exhibits a Gaussian line profile and is statistically significant at the $3.3 \sigma$ level. Since the redshifts of the UV absorption line systems were known a priori, this is the first definitive detection of an X-ray absorption line originating from the WHIM. The equivalent width of the OVII line is $(4.1\pm1.3) \ \mathrm{m\AA}$, which corresponds to an OVII column density of $(1.4\pm0.4)\times10^{15} \ \mathrm{cm^{-2}}$. We constrain the absorbing gas to have a density of $n_{\rm H} = (1-2)\times10^{-6} \ \rm{cm^{-3}}$ for a single WHIM filament. We derive $\Omega_{\rm b} \rm(O\,VII) = (0.0023 \pm 0.0007) \, \left[ f_{O\,VII} \, {Z/Z_{\odot}} \right]^{-1}$ for the cosmological mass density of OVII, assuming that all 17 systems contribute equally., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

It remains poorly understood how sea level drives environmental change and hydrographic development in coastal karst basins (underwater caves, sinkholes, blueholes, etc.) over millennial timescales. It was previously hypothesized that coastal karst basins (CKBs) transition from vadose, to littoral, then anchialine, and finally submarine environments as sea-level rise inundates coastal karst landscapes, but the initial flooding event of CKBs remains challenging to sample. Runway Sinkhole hosts a modern anchialine ecosystem located ∼225 m from Great Abaco Island coastline in The Bahamas, and its shallow water depth (∼1.8 mbsl) permits an investigation into the early environmental evolution and hydrographic development in a CKBs after inundation by sea-level rise. Four sediment cores were collected from Runway Sinkhole, and late Holocene environmental change was reconstructed with benthic foraminiferal paleoecology, organic matter geochemistry (OM%, δ 13 C org , and C:N), X-radiography, and radiocarbon dating. Despite some uncertainties associated with the chronology, it appears that Holocene sea-level rise initially flooded Runway Sinkhole and created a littoral environment at least by ∼3.9 ka, whereafter a detrital peat deposit accumulated in the sinkhole. This detrital peat had a high organic matter content (mean 88%), a δ 13 C org value indicative of organic matter derived from C 3 plants including mangroves (−28‰), and an unknown calcareous microfossil suggestive of a non-marine habitat in the sinkhole. A shift to carbonate sand deposition, organic matter with more marine-influenced δ 13 C org values (−23‰), and expansion of euryhaline ( Bolivina striatula , Elphidium poeyanum , and Triloculina bermudezi ) and anchialine ( Physalidia simplex and Conicospirillina exleyi ) benthic foraminifera at ∼1.2 ka marks the onset of modern anchialine environmental conditions at the sediment–water interface (∼1.8 mbsl). These results suggest that relative sea-level rise in the Bahamas forced environmental change in Runway sinkhole at ∼1.2 ka, and indicate that peat deposits in coastal sinkholes must be verified as in-situ before being utilized as sea-level indicators.

Background Hungary has become a popular destination for foreign patients in the last two decades, particularly in dental care. Since 2008, increasing prices in Western Europe coupled with Hungary’s accessibility and availability of dental treatment, has meant the country has become a leader in ‘dental tourism’. As the quality of care in Hungary is high and prices are more affordable than in Western Europe, and due to the freedom of movement of people, services and goods within the EU, patient flow into Hungary has increased progressively. Objectives The aim of this article is to provide comprehensive empirical evidence from the perspective of a recipient country in dental tourism. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among Hungarian dentists (n = 273). Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with representatives of dental professional bodies (n = 10). Both research methods aimed to elicit dentists’ views on the presence of dental tourism – particularly the push and pull factors (for example, source countries, competitors, information sources, patient motivation). Results The findings show that there are several reasons why Hungary could maintain a leading position in dental tourism. First, the cost/benefit ratio is outstanding. The affordable price and value for money were already recognised in the early 1990s and were appreciated even before Hungary joined the EU. Secondly, the high quality of Hungary’s dental profession: a) dental professionals in Hungary are well-qualified dental practitioners who have received high level dental training; b) dental professional standards are up-to-date and often supervised; c) in Hungary dental technology, the quality of materials and equipment used in dental practices is of European level quality. The rate of complications in dental care is around 5%, similar to other European countries. Finally, previous treatment experiences are positive and patient satisfaction levels are high. More and more patients seek care in Hungary, and more and more patients state that they would be willing to return for further treatment in the future.

Climate change has several positive effects on the field of Sopron wine-growing region. These positive consequences may result in cultivation much more quality wine grapes and wines. All those wine-producing areas, which lie on the Western part of the Carpathian Basin have become more suitable for lots of wine grapes, which need more warmth and solar radiation. It can be seen a significant positive change in some temperature and precipitation parameters over the past decades and these changes are taking place now as well. The increasing trend in temperature and Growing Degree Days (GDD), furthermore the decreasing trend in precipitation during growing season may redound the change in aptness of the study area. It is enough to cultivate more wine grape varieties than before. Currently Sopron wine-growing region is one of “the winners” of climate change in Hungary.

We report the first observation of diffractive $J/\psi(\to \mu^+\mu^-)$ production in $\bar pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.8 TeV. Diffractive events are identified by their rapidity gap signature. In a sample of events with two muons of transverse momentum $p_T^{\mu}>2$ GeV/$c$ within the pseudorapidity region $|\eta, Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, using RevTeX. We report a measurement of the strong coupling constant, ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}({M}_{Z})$, extracted from inclusive jet production in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1800\mathrm{GeV}$. The QCD prediction for the evolution of ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}$ with jet transverse energy ${E}_{T}$ is tested over the range $40l{E}_{T}l450\mathrm{GeV}$ using ${E}_{T}$ for the renormalization scale. The data show good agreement with QCD in the region below 250 GeV. The value of ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}$ at the mass of the ${Z}^{0}$ boson averaged over the range $40l{E}_{T}l250\mathrm{GeV}$ is found to be ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}({M}_{Z})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.1178\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0001(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.0095}^{+0.0081}(\mathrm{expt}.\mathrm{syst})$. The associated theoretical uncertainties are mainly due to the choice of renormalization scale $({+6%}{\ensuremath{-}4%})$ and input parton distribution functions $(5%)$.
