Abstract

The cross section for the process e+e− → multihadrons has been measured at the highest PETRA energies. We measure R (the total cross section in units of the point-like e+e- → μ+μ- cross section) to be 2.9 ± 0.7, 4.0 ± 0.5, 4.6 ± 0.4 and 4.2 ± 0.6 at s of 22, 27.7, 30 and 31.6 GeV, respectively. The observed average multiplicity, together with existing low energy data, indicate a rapid increase in multiplicity with increasing energy.

Abstract

The radiative decays of J ψ into f/γ, f′γ, ππγ and KKγ have been measured using the double arm spectrometer DASP at DORIS. We find B(J/φ→fγ)=(J/φ→fγ)/(J/φ→all)=(0.9±0.3)×10−3 to (1.5±0.4)×10−3 depending on the multi- pole mode of the J ψ decay and that B( J /φ→ f ′γ) B( J /γ→ f γ)⪕ 1 3 .

Abstract

The three photon final state produced in e + e − collisions at 3.6 GeV and at the mass of the ψ′ resonance has been measured using the nonmagnetic part of the double arm spectrometer DASP. A total of 31 events is observed outside the resonance region compared to 35.1 events predicted from QED. At the mass of the ψ′ 49 events are observed compared to 37.2 events expected from QED. Limits on radiative decays via intermediate states are given.

Abstract

The semileptonic and leptonic decay modes of charmed hadrons produced in e+e− collisions above 4 GeV in the cm have been investigated by selecting events with a single electron plus at least two charged tracks. The electron momentum spectrum peaks near 0.5 GeV/c with few events above 0.7 GeV/c. The spectrum excludes large rates for the decays D → e v e and D → e v e π , but is compatible with D → e v e K ∗ (892) , D → e v e K or a mixture of both. The semileptonic branching ratio is obtained both by comparing the inclusive electron cross section with the total cross section attributable to charm, and by studying the fraction of events containing a second electron. The semileptonic charm branching ratios obtained are 0.11 ± 0.03 and 0.16 ± 0.06 respectively. A single event with three electrons and hadrons is found, consistent with the estimated background. The 90% confidence upper limit for σ(e+e− → 3e + hadrons) is 0.1 nb.

Hadronic two body decays of the 3.1 GeV resonance were measured and the following branching ratios were obtained: Γπ+π−/Γμμ Γ p p / Γ μ μμ = 0.036 ± 0.010 assuming the p p decay distribution is ≈ + cos2θ.

Branching ratios have been determined for the decays of J ψ and ψ ′ into π+π−, K+K−, p p , π±ϱ∓ and K ± K ∗ (892) ∓ . Results on a search for other two body decays of J ψ and ψ′ are given. Also presented are values for the π and K from factors at s = 3.1 and 3.7 GeV .

Abstract

Inclusive production of ifπ±, K± and p has been studied near charm threshold for c.m. energies between 3.6 and 5.2 GeV. Differential and scaling cross sections together with particle multiplicities have been determinated. By comparing data below and above charm threshold the charm contribution to if π± and K± production has been extracted. A comparison has been made between inclusice p production and inelastic electron-proton scattering. To study differences between three-gluon annihilation and two-quark production of the spectra from J/ decay and from non-resonant production at 3.6 GeV has been compared.

Elastic e + e − scattering has been measured at total energies covering the newly found resonance at 3100 MeV. The angular distribution is consistent with spin-parity 1 - , and the cross section integrated over energy yields Г 2 ee /Г tot = 0.23 ± 0.05 keV for the resonance.

Abstract

The cross sections for e+e− → e+(μ+ + non showering track + any photons have been measured for cm energies between 3.1 GeV and 5.2 GeV. We observe τ-pair production below the thresholdfor charm production and determine the τ mass to be 1.807 ± 0.020 GeV from a fit to the energy dependence of the cross section. The ration of the leptonic branching ratios Bμ/Be = 0.92 ± 0.32 is consistent with eμ-universality. The following branching ratios are determined for a V-A coupling: B(τ → ν τ e ν ) = B(τ → ν τ μ ν ) = 0.182 + 0.028 . B(τ → ντ + charged hadron + any photons) = 0.29 ± 0.11, B(τ → ντ + three or more charged hadrons + any photons) = 0.35 ± 0.11.

Abstract

Abstract

The multiplicity distribution of inclusive electron events above 4 GeV cm energy shows two distinct classes of events: two prong no photon and high multiplicity events. If the high multiplicity events are attributed to the semi-leptonic decay of charmed particles the two prong no photon events must come from the weak decay of a different type of particle. The charged K to π ratio was measured for these events. The average number of charged kaons is 0.07 ± 0.06 per two prong event and 0.90 ± 0.18 per multiprong event. Thus the weak current responsible for the low multiplicity events has a small coupling to strange particles.

Abstract

We have measured collinear and nearly collinear photon pairs from e+e− annihilation at total energies covering the resonance at 3100 MeV. The observed cross section is in good agreement with the e+e− → γγ cross section expected from quantum electrodynamics. Upper limits for the decay modes (3100) → γγ, πOγ and other modes are derived.

Abstract

Inclusive cross sections of η production by e+e- annihilation for c.m. energies between 4.0 and 5.0 GeV are presented. The η production is shown to be correlated with the production of a weakly decaying particle, indicating that its main source is F production. At the 4.42 GeV resonance it is correlated with a low energy photon, suggesting FF∗ or F∗F∗ production. A mass determination of the F is made at 4.42 GeV using the F → ηπ decay channel.

Abstract

Single electrons produced with hadrons in e + e − collisions at cms energies of 4.0 to 4.2 GeV have been observed at DORIS using the double arm spectrometer DASP. The measured electron spectrum peaks at low momentum and the associated hadron multiplicity is high. These experimental results are consistent with the electromagnetic production and weak decay of a hadron with a new quantum number that is conserved by the strong and electromagnetic interaction. The electron yield at 3.7 GeV (the ψ′ resonance) and at lower energies was found to be consistent with the estimated background, indicating that the production threshold lies between 3.7 and 4.0 GeV.

Abstract

The total cross section for e + e − annihilation into hadronic final states between 3.6 and 5.2 GeV was measured by the nonmagnetic inner detector of DASP, which has similar trigger and detection efficiencies for photons and charged particles. The measured difference in R = σ had / σμμ between 3.6 GeV and 5.2 GeV is ΔR = 2.1 ± 0.3. We observe three peaks at cm energies of 4.04, 4.16 and 4.417 GeV, the parameters of which, when interpreted as resonances, are given.

Abstract

We report results for μ pair production in e+e− collisions at the 3100 MeV resonance. We find a resonance cross section, integrated over total energy of 1240 ± 140 nb-MeV implying Γ μμΓee/Γtot = 0.51 ± 0.09 KeV. The angular distribution is consistent with ∼(1 + cos2θ). No forward-backward asymmetry is observed.

Abstract

The two photon cascade decay of the 3.7 GeV resonance into the 3.1 GeV resonance has been observed in two nearly independent experiments. The clustering of the photon energies around 160 MeV and 420 MeV observed in the channel 3.7 → (3.1 → μ + μ − ) + γγ indicates the existence of at least one intermediate state with even charge conjugation at a mass around 3.52 GeV or 3.26 GeV.

Abstract

Inclusive η production by e+e− annihilation for cm energies between 4 and 5.2 GeV was studied. A strong η signal was observed at 4.4 GeV, produced predominantly in conjunction with a low energy photon suggestive of F F ∗ or F∗ F ∗ production. From events containing a π±, and η, and a low energy photon the F and F∗ masses were found to be 2.03 ± 0.06 and 2.14 ± 0.06 GeV, respectively.

Abstract

Pathologische Skelettveranderungen beim Ausfall der Keimdrusenfunktion wurden bisher fast nur bei Frauen beobachtet. Es ist das Verdienst von Albright und seinen Schulern, die grose Bedeutung des Follikelhormons fur die Pathogenese der klimakterischen Osteoporose erkannt zu haben. Die Annahme lag nahe, das ein Erloschen der Keimdrusenfunktion beim Manne zu ahnlichen Erscheinungen am Skelett wie bei der Frau fuhren mus. Bis heute fehlen jedoch, wenn man von Einzelbeobachtungen der jungsten Zeit absieht [Labhart und Courvoisier, Heiv. med. Acta 17, 475 (1950)], systematische Arbeiten in dieser Richtung an einem groseren und endokrinologisch ausreichend untersuchten Krankengut.
