Abstract: Abstract RES-NOVA is a newly proposed experiment for detecting neutrinos from astrophysical sources, mainly Supernovae, using an array of cryogenic detectors made of PbWO $$_4$$ 4 crystals produced from archaeological Pb. This unconventional material, characterized by intrinsic high radiopurity, enables low-background levels in the region of interest for the neutrino detection via Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE $$\nu $$ ν NS). This signal lies at the detector energy threshold, O(1 keV), and it is expected to be hidden by naturally occurring radioactive contaminants of the crystal absorber. Here, we present the results of a radiopurity assay on a 0.84 kg PbWO $$_4$$ 4 crystal produced from archaeological Pb operated as a cryogenic detector. Abstract: Abstract The CUORE experiment is a large bolometric array searching for the lepton number violating neutrino-less double beta decay ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β ) in the isotope $$\mathrm {^{130}Te}$$ 130 Te . In this work we present the latest results on two searches for the double beta decay (DBD) of $$\mathrm {^{130}Te}$$ 130 Te to the first $$0^{+}_2$$ 0 2 + excited state of $$\mathrm {^{130}Xe}$$ 130 Xe : the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay and the Standard Model-allowed two-neutrinos double beta decay ( $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β ). Both searches are based on a 372.5 kg $$\times $$ × yr TeO $$_2$$ 2 exposure. The de-excitation gamma rays emitted by the excited Xe nucleus in the final state yield a unique signature, which can be searched for with low background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals constitutes a significant advantage in this regard. The median limit setting sensitivities at 90% Credible Interval (C.I.) of the given searches were estimated as $$\mathrm {S^{0\nu }_{1/2} = 5.6 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ S 1 / 2 0 ν = 5.6 × 10 24 yr for the $${0\nu \beta \beta }$$ 0 ν β β decay and $$\mathrm {S^{2\nu }_{1/2} = 2.1 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ S 1 / 2 2 ν = 2.1 × 10 24 yr for the $${2\nu \beta \beta }$$ 2 ν β β decay. No significant evidence for either of the decay modes was observed and a Bayesian lower bound at $$90\%$$ 90 % C.I. on the decay half lives is obtained as: $$\mathrm {(T_{1/2})^{0\nu }_{0^+_2} > 5.9 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ ( T 1 / 2 ) 0 2 + 0 ν > 5.9 × 10 24 yr for the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β mode and $$\mathrm {(T_{1/2})^{2\nu }_{0^+_2} > 1.3 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ ( T 1 / 2 ) 0 2 + 2 ν > 1.3 × 10 24 yr for the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β mode. These represent the most stringent limits on the DBD of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te to excited states and improve by a factor $$\sim 5$$ ∼ 5 the previous results on this process.

Abstract: Abstract We report on a search for double beta decay of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$ 130Te to the first $$0^{+}$$ 0+ excited state of $$^{130}\hbox {Xe}$$ 130Xe using a $$9.8\,\hbox {kg}\cdot \hbox {yr}$$ 9.8kg·yr exposure of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$ 130Te collected with the CUORE-0 experiment. In this work we exploit different topologies of coincident events to search for both the neutrinoless and two-neutrino double beta decay modes. We find no evidence for either mode and place lower bounds on the half-lives: $$T^{0\nu }_{0^+_1}>7.9\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$ T01+0ν>7.9·1023yr and $$T^{2\nu }_{0^+_1}>2.4\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$ T01+2ν>2.4·1023yr ($$90\%\,\hbox {CL}$$ 90%CL ). Combining our results with those obtained by the CUORICINO experiment, we achieve the most stringent constraints available for these processes: $$T^{0\nu }_{0^+_1}>1.4\cdot 10^{24}\hbox {yr}$$ T01+0ν>1.4·1024yr and $$T^{2\nu }_{0^+_1}>2.5\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$ T01+2ν>2.5·1023yr ($$90\%\,\hbox {CL}$$ 90%CL ).

Abstract: Abstract CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic detector operating at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) that uses tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te. CUORE is also suitable to search for low energy rare events such as solar axions or WIMP scattering, thanks to its ultra-low background and large target mass. However, to conduct such sensitive searches requires improving the energy threshold to 10 keV. In this paper, we describe the analysis techniques developed for the low energy analysis of CUORE-like detectors, using the data acquired from November 2013 to March 2015 by CUORE-0, a single-tower prototype designed to validate the assembly procedure and new cleaning techniques of CUORE. We explain the energy threshold optimization, continuous monitoring of the trigger efficiency, data and event selection, and energy calibration at low energies in detail. We also present the low energy background spectrum of CUORE-0 below $$60 \, \mathrm {keV}$$ 60 keV . Finally, we report the sensitivity of CUORE to WIMP annual modulation using the CUORE-0 energy threshold and background, as well as an estimate of the uncertainty on the nuclear quenching factor from nuclear recoils inCUORE-0.

Abstract: Abstract The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te with an array of 988 TeO $$_2$$ 2 bolometers operating at temperatures around 10 mK. The experiment is currently being commissioned in Hall A of Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The goal of CUORE is to reach a 90% C.L. exclusion sensitivity on the $$^{130}$$ 130 Te decay half-life of 9 $$\times $$ × 10 $$^{25}$$ 25 years after 5 years of data taking. The main issue to be addressed to accomplish this aim is the rate of background events in the region of interest, which must not be higher than 10 $$^{-2}$$ - 2 counts/keV/kg/year. We developed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation, based on results from a campaign of material screening, radioassays, and bolometric measurements, to evaluate the expected background. This was used over the years to guide the construction strategies of the experiment and we use it here to project a background model for CUORE. In this paper we report the results of our study and our expectations for the background rate in the energy region where the peak signature of neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te is expected.

Abstract: Abstract We report a study of the CUORE sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β ) decay. We used a Bayesian analysis based on a toy Monte Carlo (MC) approach to extract the exclusion sensitivity to the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay half-life ( $$T_{1/2}^{\,0\nu }$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν ) at $$90\%$$ 90 % credibility interval (CI) – i.e. the interval containing the true value of $$T_{1/2}^{\,0\nu }$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν with $$90\%$$ 90 % probability – and the $$3~\sigma $$ 3 σ discovery sensitivity. We consider various background levels and energy resolutions, and describe the influence of the data division in subsets with different background levels. If the background level and the energy resolution meet the expectation, CUORE will reach a $$90\%$$ 90 % CI exclusion sensitivity of $$2\cdot 10^{25}$$ 2 · 10 25 year with 3 months, and $$9\cdot 10^{25}$$ 9 · 10 25 year with 5 years of live time. Under the same conditions, the discovery sensitivity after 3 months and 5 years will be $$7\cdot 10^{24}$$ 7 · 10 24 year and $$4\cdot 10^{25}$$ 4 · 10 25 year, respectively.

7. Coeliac disease: rational approach to the diagnosis

Abstract: BACKGROUND Celiac disease is a chronic food intolerance caused by gluten ingestion determining in genetically susceptible individuals a damage of small intestinal mucosa resulting in villous atrophy and malabsorption. This condition is more frequent in women (female/male ratio 2:1) with an onset at any age (from the first infancy to the elderly) and a very high prevalence in the general population (1%), but at present largely underdiagnosed. From a clinical point of view, the identification of gluten-sensitive enteropathy is challenging since it can present with several gastrointestinal (diarrhoea, constipation, recurrent abdominal pain) and extra-intestinal symptoms (anaemia, raised transaminases, osteoporosis, recurrent abortion, aphthous stomatitis and associated autoimmune disorders) or being completely symptomless. Its diagnosis relies on antibody markers (anti tissue transglutaminase and anti endomysial antibodies) and duodenal biopsy (the diagnostic “gold standard” with the typical villous atrophy), whereas HLA determination can only exclude the diagnosis when DQ2/DQ8 are absent. However, since not all antibodies and histological duodenal changes related to celiac disease are specific for gluten-sensitive enteropathy, the phenomenon of patients erroneously identified as coeliacs is increasing. CONCLUSIONS The implementation of a diagnostic algorythm for celiac disease, based on essential tests and applicable everywhere, with a different protocol for subjects at high risk (with malabsorption syndrome), at low risk (monosymptomatic) and with familiarity for the disease has become mandatory in order to make a correct and earlier diagnosis.

Abstract: Neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process that offers the only known means of asserting the possible Majorana nature of neutrino mass. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for 0νββ decay of 130Te using an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK. The detector will contain 206 kg of 130Te and have an average energy resolution of 5 keV; the projected 0νββ decay half-life sensitivity after five years of livetime is 1.6 × 1026 y at 1σ (9.5 × 1025 y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40–100 meV (50–130 meV). In this paper, we review the experimental techniques used in CUORE as well as its current status and anticipated physics reach.

Abstract: Pyroglutamate amyloid beta3–42 (pGlu-Abeta3–42), a highly amyloidogenic and neurotoxic form of Abeta, is N-terminally truncated to form a pyroglutamate and has recently been proposed as a key target for immunotherapy. Optimized ACI-24, a vaccine in development for the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, focuses the antibody response on the first 15 N-terminal amino acids of Abeta (Abeta1–15). Importantly, clinical data with an initial version of ACI-24 incorporating Abeta1–15, established the vaccine’s safety and tolerability with evidence of immunogenicity. To explore optimized ACI-24’s capacity to generate antibodies to pGlu-Abeta3–42, pre-clinical studies were carried out. Vaccinating mice and non-human primates demonstrated that optimized ACI-24 was well-tolerated and induced an antibody response against Abeta1–42 as expected, as well as high titres of IgG reactive with pyroGlu-Abeta. Epitope mapping of the polyclonal response confirmed these findings revealing broad coverage of epitopes particularly for Abeta peptides mimicking where cleavage occurs to form pGlu-Abeta3–42. These data are in striking contrast to results obtained with other clinically tested Abeta targeting vaccines which generated restricted and limited antibody diversity. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that optimized ACI-24 vaccination represents a breakthrough to provide a safe immune response with a broader Abeta sequence recognition compared to previously tested vaccines, creating binders to pathogenic forms of Abeta important in pathogenesis including pGlu-Abeta3–42.

Abstract: The CUORE experiment is a ton-scale array of $$\hbox {TeO}_2$$ TeO 2 cryogenic bolometers located at the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), in Italy. The CUORE detector consists of 988 crystals operated as source and detector at a base temperature of $$\sim 10$$ ∼ 10 mK. Such cryogenic temperature is reached and maintained by means of a custom built cryogen-free dilution cryostat, designed with the aim of minimizing the vibrational noise and the environmental radioactivity. The primary goal of CUORE is the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$ 130 Te , but thanks to its large target mass and ultra-low background it is suitable for the study of other rare processes as well, such as the neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{128}\hbox {Te}$$ 128 Te . This tellurium isotope is an attractive candidate for the search of this process, due to its high natural isotopic abundance of 31.75%. The transition energy at (866.7 ± 0.7) keV lies in a highly populated region of the energy spectrum, dominated by the contribution of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$ 130 Te . As the first ton-scale infrastructure operating cryogenic $$\hbox {TeO}_2$$ TeO 2 bolometers in stable conditions, CUORE is able to achieve a factor $$>10$$ > 10 higher sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay of this isotope with respect to past direct experiments.

Abstract: In this paper, we report a facile, low cost synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on borophosphate glass by a two-step process involving a melting quenching technique and a post-annealing method. The structural, optical properties and several applications of silver-doped borophosphate glasses as a function of Al2O3 concentration are reported here. Micro Raman and infrared spectroscopies revealed that the addition of aluminium ions leads to depolymerization and the formation of phosphate-aluminium structures. Moreover, the addition of Al2O3 increases the glass transition temperature, improve the chemical stability, and the AgNPs remain firmly grafted (i.e., not released) when the glass surface is exposed to water. The presence of silver ions and metallic silver on glass surface was confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), respectively. The fabricated AgNPs have many advantages, such as low growth temperature and good uniform nanoparticle clusters over large areas, size-controlled, and easy to fabricate. Finally, the silver-doped glasses have proved to be an ideal substrate for highly efficient SERS applications, antibacterial materials and great potential in catalysts.

Abstract: We measured two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{130}$Te using an exposure of 300.7 kg$\cdot$yr accumulated with the CUORE detector. Using a Bayesian analysis to fit simulated spectra to experimental data, it was possible to disentangle all the major background sources and precisely measure the two-neutrino contribution. The half-life is in agreement with past measurements with a strongly reduced uncertainty: $T^{2\nu}_{1/2} = 7.71^{+0.08}_{-0.06}\mathrm{(stat.)}^{+0.12}_{-0.15}\mathrm{(syst.)}\times10^{20}$ yr. This measurement is the most precise determination of the $^{130}$Te 2$\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life to date.

Abstract: We report new results from the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in ^{130} Te with the CUORE detector. This search benefits from a fourfold increase in exposure, lower trigger thresholds, and analysis improvements relative to our previous results. We observe a background of (1.38±0.07)×10^{-2} counts/(keV kg yr)) in the 0νββ decay region of interest and, with a total exposure of 372.5 kg yr, we attain a median exclusion sensitivity of 1.7×10^{25} yr. We find no evidence for 0νββ decay and set a 90% credibility interval Bayesian lower limit of 3.2×10^{25} yr on the ^{130} Te half-life for this process. In the hypothesis that 0νββ decay is mediated by light Majorana neutrinos, this results in an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass of 75-350 meV, depending on the nuclear matrix elements used.

Its detector consists of 988 TeO2 crystals operating at a base temperature of ∼10 mK. It is the first ton-scale bolometric experiment ever realized for this purpose. Thanks to its large target mass and ultra-low background, the CUORE detector is also suitable for the search of other rare phenomena. In particular the low energy part of the spectra is interesting for the detection of WIMP-nuclei scattering reactions. One of the most important requirements to perform these studies is represented by the achievement of a stable energy threshold lower than 10 keV. Here, the CUORE capability to accomplish this purpose using a low energy software trigger will be presented and described.

Abstract: The Optimum Trigger (OT) is based on a threshold algorithm applied on waveforms filtered by exploiting the matched filter technique. The OT trigger thresholds improve by 60-90% with respect to the thresholds obtained with the standard trigger, ranging between ∼ 20 and 100 keV . Low trigger thresholds open the way to Dark Matter searches and to improvements in the neutrinoless double beta decay analysis. Nevertheless, running the OT on CUORE data is demanding from the computational resources point of view. For this reason, the algorithm has been revised and adapted to cope with CUORE data. The work done to implement OT in CUORE and its performances will be discussed.

Abstract: The distinction between active inflammation and fibrosis of the bowel wall is essential for therapeutic decisions in stricturing Crohn's disease. We aimed to assess whether real-time elastography (RTE) with strain ratio measurement could be useful in differentiating fibrotic from inflamed bowel strictures and to evaluate the possible relationship between US techniques and the histology of the stenotic bowel wall.Bowel ultrasonography (including RTE, color-Doppler and CEUS examination) was prospectively evaluated in 26 patients with symptomatic stricturing Crohn's disease, before surgery. RTE was adopted to evaluate bowel stiffness: five loops of 20 RTE frames were recorded for each stenotic segment and the mean strain ratio (MSR) was obtained. Histology scoring systems both for inflammation and fibrosis were established for surgical specimens.No significant correlation was found between MSR and fibrosis score (MSR detection was not able to distinguish fibrotic from inflammatory tissue in our selected population. This result could be influenced by the presence of the superimposed inflammation. Larger cohort of patients, further analysis with shear wave elastography, and validated histopathology classification systems for fibrosis and inflammation are necessary to assess if intestinal fibrosis could be reliably detected on the basis of bowel elastic properties.la distinzione tra infiammazione attiva e fibrosi nella parete intestinale è essenziale nel proceso decisionale della terapia nella malattia di Crohn stenosante. Lo scopo del nostro studio era di stabilire se l’elastografia real-time (RTE) con la misurazione dello strain ratio potesse essere utile nel differenziare il tessuto fibrotico da quello infiammatorio nella parete intestinale stenotica, e di valutare la presenza di correlazioni tra le tecniche ecografiche di studio delle anse intestinali e le caratteristiche istologiche dei segmenti analizzati.Lo studio ecografico delle anse intestinali che comprendeva anche RTE, valutazione color-Doppler e CEUS, è stato eseguito in maniera prospettica in 26 pazienti con malattia di Crohn stenosante sintomatica, prima dell’ intervento chirurgico resettivo. La RTE è stata utilizzata per valutare la rigidità della parete intestinale: 5 filmati di 20 frames di elastografia sono stati registrati per ogni segmento stenotico, per ogni frame è stato calcolato lo strain ratio e quindi ne è stata ottenuta la media (MSR). E’ stato poi stabilito uno score istologico per l’ infiammazione e la fibrosi per i pezzi operatori analizzati.non è stata rilevata alcuna correlazione significativa tra MSR e score istologico della fibrosi (P = 0877). Il Color-doppler correlava significativamente con lo spessore di parete e l’ispessimento della sottomucosa (P = 0006 e P = 0032, rispettivamente). Non è stata trovata una correlazione significativa tra il numero di vasi rilevato sul pezzo istologico e gli score color-Doppler e CEUS (P = 0170 e P = 0302, rispettivamente).il calcolo del MSR non si è rivelato un parametro efficace nel distinguere tra tessuto fibrotico ed infiammatorio nella nostra popolazione. Questo risultato è influenzato da vari fattori, tra cui probabilmente la compresenza di infiammazione. Coorti di pazienti più ampie, ulteriori analisi con l’ausilio eventualmente dell’ elastografia shear-wave, e sistemi di classificazione istopatologici validati sia per la fibrosi che per l’infiammazione, risultano necessari per stabilire se la fibrosi intestinale possa essere rilevata in maniera affidabile sulla base delle proprietà elastiche della parete intestinale.

Abstract: Environmental cerium (Ce) levels are likely to increase in the near future and monitoring of its biological effects will therefore be necessary. The aim of this study was to test if treatment of the lichen Xanthoria parietina with Ce-containing solutions (0.1 mM, 1 mM, 10 mM and 100 mM) causes Ce bioaccumulation (both extra- and intra-cellularly) as well as physiological (sample viability, membrane lipids peroxidation, photosynthetic performance, water-soluble proteins content) and ultrastructural alterations. The results showed that treatment with Ce solutions induces Ce bioaccumulation, both extra-cellularly and intra-cellularly, which in turn causes an acute toxicity, evident as decreased sample viability, marked decrease in the photosynthetic performance and important changes in the ultrastructure.

Abstract: In the present work the characterization of six ingots of ancient Roman Lead, found on the seabed near Mal Di Ventre Isle (Sardinia-Italy), is presented. The ingots come from three different foundries, defined by following codes found on the particular ingots selves: SOCPONTILIENORUMMF, QAPPCF and MCPONTILIENORUMMF. The foundries were active about 2000 years ago in Sierra de Cartagena (Spain) where some of the most important lead mines of the Roman Empire were located. In order to identify the provenance of the ingots and to shed some lights on their manufacturing we applied a multi-analytical method, based on instrumental neutron activation analysis and thermal ionization mass spectrometry. Coupling the two techniques it was possible to obtain an accurate multi-elemental and isotopical fingerprint of the different ingots, giving some important results in the field of archeo-metallurgy. The possibility to perform such measurements with a non-destructive approach satisfies a very important request of the cultural heritage authorities involved in the protection and conservation of similar goods.

Abstract: The CUORE experiment, a ton-scale cryogenic bolometer array, recently began operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The array represents a significant advancement in this technology, and in this work we apply it for the first time to a high-sensitivity search for a lepton-number-violating process: ^{130}Te neutrinoless double-beta decay. Examining a total TeO_{2} exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of (7.7±0.5) keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of (0.014±0.002) counts/(keV kg yr), we find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Including systematic uncertainties, we place a lower limit on the decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}(^{130}Te)>1.3×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.); the median statistical sensitivity of this search is 7.0×10^{24} yr. Combining this result with those of two earlier experiments, Cuoricino and CUORE-0, we find T_{1/2}^{0ν}(^{130}Te)>1.5×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.), which is the most stringent limit to date on this decay. Interpreting this result as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, we find m_{ββ}

Abstract: Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) is a new software-based technique that evaluates liver stiffness during B-mode ultrasonography. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of ARFI in distinguishing patients with chronic autoimmune liver disease from healthy subjects.We enrolled 9 adult patients (8 women, 1 man; age 48.1 ± 12.8 years) with chronic autoimmune disease (primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC, n = 3), autoimmune hepatitis (AIH, n = 2), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC, n = 1) and overlap syndromes, (n = 3) who underwent a liver biopsy and 11 healthy volunteers (age 34.7 ± 10.4 years; 7 women, 4 men). Liver stiffness was evaluated and expressed as the shear wave velocity (SWV) in m/sec. We used a US scanner Siemens-Acuson S2000, evaluating the right liver lobe and the left liver lobe.THE SWV WAS SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER IN CASES (RIGHT LOBE: 1.51 ± 0.44; left lobe: 1.57 ± 0.40) than in controls (right lobe: 1.08 ± 0.10; left lobe: 1.12 ± 0.13) (right lobe: P = 0.002; left lobe: P = 0.013). We found no significant correlation between right and left lobe SWVs in cases (P = 0.779) or controls (P = 0.385). The SWV cut-off that best distinguished cases from controls was 1.25 m/sec (accuracy: AUC=0.885; sensitivity: 70.6%; specificity: 95.5%).ARFI elastography is a noninvasive ultrasonographic technique that can differentiate healthy subjects from patients with fibrotic stages of chronic liver disease.L'elastografia ARFI è una tecnologia integrata all'ultrasonografia convenzionale B-mode in grado di determinare la rigidità tissutale. L'obiettivo di questo studio è stato valutare se l'elastografia ARFI sia in grado di differenziare pazienti affetti da patologie epatiche croniche autoimmuni e soggetti normali.Sono stati arruolati 9 pazienti affetti da epatopatia cronica autoimmune sottoposti a biopsia epatica (età 48.1 ± 12.8 anni; femmine/maschi: 8/1; 3 PBC, 2 AIH, 1 PSC e 3 overlap) e 11 volontari sani (età 34.7 ± 10.4 anni; F/M: 7/4). La rigidità epatica è stata valutata mediante l'elastografia ARFI ed espressa come “shear wave velocity” (SWV) in m/sec. È stato utilizzato un ecografo Siemens-Acuson S2000 valutando entrambi i lobi epatici. Le misurazioni sono state eseguite a respiro bloccato, ad una profondità compresa tra 2 e 5 cm.La SWV è risultata significativamente più elevata nei casi (Dx: 1.51 ± 0.44; Sn: 1.57 ± 0.40) rispetto ai controlli (Dx: 1.08 ± 0.10; Sn: 1.12 ± 0.13) (Dx:L'elastografia ARFI è una metodica ultrasonografica utile nel differenziare soggetti sani da pazienti affetti da epatopatia cronica in evoluzione fibrotica.

Abstract: The CUORE Crystal Validation Runs (CCVRs) have been carried out since the end of 2008 at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, in order to test the performances and the radiopurity of the TeO$_2$ crystals produced at SICCAS (Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) for the CUORE experiment. In this work the results of the first 5 validation runs are presented. Results have been obtained for bulk contaminations and surface contaminations from several nuclides. Abstract: International audience; The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers. The construction of the experiment and the installation of all towers in the cryostat was completed in August 2016: the experiment is now in data taking phase. In this talk, beyond updating the physics results from CUORE-0, we will discuss the achievements and technical challenges of the CUORE construction phase, with particular emphasis on the background reduction strategy, the performance of the detector during pre-operation and the projected first results from the full detector run.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of elastography point quantification for the diagnosis of liver fibrosis and to assess impact of steatosis on liver stiffness measurement, in a cohort of patients with chronic hepatitis C. Methods In this single-centre cross-sectional study, 211 consecutive patients with chronic hepatitis C, scheduled for liver biopsy, were examined with the elastography point quantification technology. On the same day, all patients underwent clinical examination, laboratory tests and abdominal ultrasound. Results The best cut-offs of liver stiffness measurement were 6.16 kPa for the diagnosis of significant fibrosis (≥S3) and 6.79 kPa for advanced fibrosis (≥S4). Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve were 0.831 (CI: 0.773–0.880) for significant fibrosis, and 0.954 (CI: 0.916–0.978) for advanced fibrosis. Among patients within the same fibrosis stages (S0–S2 and S3–S6; S0–S3 and S4–S6), mean liver stiffness measurement values were similar in patients with steatosis (≥10% at liver biopsy or detected by ultrasound) compared to those without. Discordance between elastography point quantification and histology were affected by the presence of BMI>30 kg/m2 (P=.047, CI: 0.136–0.988 and P=.020, CI: 0.083–0.812 respectively). Conclusions In patients with chronic hepatitis C, elastography point quantification is an accurate non-invasive method for the diagnosis of significant and advanced fibrosis. The presence of obesity is a risk factor for misclassification of significant and advanced liver fibrosis.

Abstract: We describe in detail the methods used to obtain the lower bound on the lifetime of neutrinoless double-beta (0 nu beta beta) decay in Te-130 and the associated limit on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino using the CUORE-0 detector. CUORE-0 is a bolometric detector array located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso that was designed to validate the background reduction techniques developed for CUORE, a next-generation experiment scheduled to come online in 2016. CUORE-0 is also a competitive 0 nu beta beta decay search in its own right and functions as a platform to further develop the analysis tools and procedures to be used in CUORE. These include data collection, event selection and processing, as well as an evaluation of signal efficiency. In particular, we describe the amplitude evaluation, thermal gain stabilization, energy calibration methods, and the analysis event selection used to create our final 0 nu beta beta search spectrum. We define our high level analysis procedures, with emphasis on the new insights gained and challenges encountered. We outline in detail our fitting methods near the hypothesized 0 nu beta beta decay peak and catalog the main sources of systematic uncertainty. Finally, we derive the 0 nu beta beta decay half-life limits previously reported for CUORE-0, T-1/2(0 nu) > 2.7 x 10(24) yr, and in combination with the Cuoricino limit, T-1/2(0 nu) > 4.0 x 10(24) yr.

Abstract: The SOCEUS survey aims to evaluate how contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is effectively used in the focal liver lesions characterization.In the survey were involved Verona, Brescia and Trieste Radiological Centers and Arezzo and Bologna Non-radiological Centers. Inclusion criteria were liver focal lesion detection at conventional ultrasound and studied by means of CEUS, with or without CT or MRI examinations, done previous or subsequent to CEUS.1069 forms were collected. Patients with benign lesions, who did not undergo any other studies, were 255/561 (45.5 %). Among patients with diagnosis of hemangioma at CEUS, those who had no other investigations were 129/267 (48.3 %). Patients with malignant lesions who had studies pre-CEUS (CT and/or MRI) were 328/508 (65 %), whereas those who had examinations post-CEUS (CT and/or MRI) were 218/508 (42.9 %). Concordance rate between CEUS and CT investigations pre- and post-CEUS was, respectively, 66 and 89 %. Concordance rate between CEUS and MRI studies pre- and post-CEUS was, respectively, 87.5 and 81.5 %.This study proves contrast-enhanced ultrasound correct application in the involved centers.Il sondaggio SOCEUS ha lo scopo di valutare come l’ecografia con mezzo di contrasto sia effettivamente impiegata nella caratterizzazione delle lesioni focali epatiche.Nel sondaggio sono tati coinvolti i centri radiologici di Verona, Brescia e Trieste e i centri non radiologici di Arezzo e Bologna. I criteri di inclusione sono stati la presenza di lesione focale epatica all’esame ecografico convenzionale studiata con ecografia con mezzo di contrasto, con o senza correlazione TC or RM, prima o dopo l’esame ecografico.Sono state raccolte 1069 schede. I pazienti con lesioni benigne che non hanno fatto altri esami sono stati 255/561 (45.5 %). Dei pazienti con diagnosi di angioma alla ecografia con mezzo di contrasto, quelli che non hanno eseguito altre indagini sono stati 129/267 (48.3 %). I pazienti con lesioni maligne sottoposti ad indagini pre-ecografia con mezzo di contrasto (TC e/o RM) sono stati 328/508 (65 %), mentre quelli che hanno eseguito esami post- ecografia con mezzo di contrasto (TC e/o RM) sono stati 218/508 (42.9 %). La concordanza tra ecografia con mezzo di contrasto ed esame TC pre- e post-ecografia con mezzo di contrasto sono rispettivamente state pari al 66 e 89 %. La concordanza tra l’ecografia con mezzo di contrasto e l’esame RM pre- e post-ecografia con mezzo di contrasto sono state rispettivamente di 87.5 e 81.5 %.Lo studio prova che l’ecografia con mezzo di contrasto è utilizzata correttamente nei Centri valutati.

The other two parts are the translation in English, carried out by one of us (G.G.), of two fundamental Fermi’s papers, which are emblematic of these aspects. These two papers were originally written in Italian and published in Italian journals in 1927 and 1934, respectively.

Abstract: In this paper we tested if treating the lichen Xanthoria parietina with Sb-containing solutions causes Sb bioaccumulation as well as physiological and ultrastructural changes. Total and intracellular antimony content in Sb-treated samples increased progressively with increasing concentration in the treatment solutions. Incubation of X. parietina thalli with Sb at concentrations as low as 0.1 mM caused a decrease in sample viability, measured as intensity of respiratory activity, and damage to cell membranes, expressed in terms of membrane lipid peroxidation, as well as ultrastructural changes such as plasmolysis, impairment of the thylakoid system of the alga and cytoplasmic lipid droplets. The photosynthetic system hardly responded, at least under the tested experimental conditions.

Abstract: We will briefly report on the present results of CUORICINO in view of the perspectives for CUORE, a Cryogenic Undergroud Observatory of Rare Events, recently proposed and approved by the Scientific Committee of the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. Even if both setups can be used also for searches on other rare events like interactions of WIMPS and of solar axions or rare nuclear decays the present report will deal only with results and perspectives concerning double beta decay.

Abstract: Neutrino physics represents today a hot topic in elementary particle physics, due to the observations of flavour oscillations both in the atmospheric and in the solar sector. This proves the existence of finite neutrino masses. In order to fix their absolute values, sensitive experiments on Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (a rare nuclear process) must be carried on. The experiment here described, named Cryogenics Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE), can extend the neutrino mass sensitivity down to 30 meV . CUORE will consist of a large, closely packed, high-granularity array of 1000 tellurite (TeO2) low-temperature calorimeters, operated at 10 mK and with a total mass of 800 kg . The final structure of the detector and the preliminary tests are presented and discussed.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a 1-ton scale bolometric experiment devoted to the search of the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}) in 130Te. The CUORE detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals operated at 10 mK. CUORE-0 is the CUORE demonstrator: it has been built to test the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment and represents the largest 130Te bolometric setup ever operated. CUORE-0 has been running at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy) from 2013 to 2015. The final CUORE-0 analysis on 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} and the corresponding detector performance are presented. The present status of the CUORE experiment, now in its final construction and commissioning phase, are discussed. Abstract: Il capitolo si propone di valutare l'impatto dell'istituzione di un'area naturale protetta sullo sviluppo socio-economico. Inizialmente, sono stati selezionati indicatori sociali ed economici rilevanti che potessero essere popolati con dati omogenei, standardizzati, disaggregabili territorialmente a livello comunale, rilevabili con periodicità almeno annuale e disponibili in serie storiche sufficientemente estese. L'analisi, basata su metodologie di carattere statistico-economico e applicata a 5 Parchi nazionali italiani, si è basata su un duplice confronto: di tipo temporale rispetto al periodo precedente l'istituzione dei Parchi e di tipo spaziale rispetto ad aree non protette con caratteristiche geografiche e storiche paragonabili.

Abstract: We describe the results of the GALLEX solar neutrino experiment after completion of the project. In particular, we summarize the results for GALLEX IV (12 solar runs) and for our 71As - spiking experiments. The integral GALLEX result for all 65 solar runs (GALLEX I–IV) is (78 ± 8) SNU (1σ). This is only slightly more than half of the expected rate. The significance of this deficit is assured. • directly by the results from our two 5Cr neutrino source experiments (at the 10% - level), and • indirectly by means of experiments in which 71Ge is generated within the target solution from beta-decaying 71As (at the percent level). GALLEX at Gran Sasso is now succeeded by Gallium Neutrino Observatory). The GNO status as of October 1998 is reported.

Abstract: After 5.5 years of data taking, GALLEX ended its experimental phase. The solar neutrino production rate, 76.4 ± 8 SNU, represents about 55% of the predicted rate. The As tests prove, at the 1% level, the reliability of the technique and the detection of 51Cr neutrino, with the nominal efficiency (93.0±8%), control the response of the detector to neutrinos in the solar energy range.
