Abstract: In a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC the spin alignment parameter η= 1 2 (2ϱ 00 − ϱ 11 − ϱ −1−1 ) is measured for ϱ0 mesons produced in deep inelastic charged-current antineutrino and neutrono interactions on neon. In the current fragmentation region η is found to be η v =0.48±0.27 ( stat. )±0.15 ( syst. ) for v Ne and ηv=0.12±0.20 (stat.)±0.10 (syst.) for vNe interactions

Abstract: The UA1 Collaboration has recently improved its measurement of the beauty production cross-section by including explicit measurements of b b correlations. Using these data we have determined the strong coupling constant α s . The comparison of the measured cross-section for 2-body final states with O ( α s 3 ) QCD predictions yields a measurement of α s (20 GeV) = 0.145 −0.010 exp −0.016 th +0.012 +0.013 , corresponding to α s ( M z ) = 0.113 −0.006 exp −0.009 th +0.007 +0.008 . This is the first theoretically well-defined measurement of α s from a purely hadronic production process. Evaluating α s from cross-sections at different Q 2 -values we find that the running of α s is needed for internal consistency of the UA1 data.

Abstract: We report on measurements of correlated$b\bar b$ production in$p\bar p$ collisions at$\sqrt s = 630GeV$, using dimuon data to tag both theb and$\bar b$ quarks. Starting from an inclusive dimuon sample we obtain improved cross-sections for single inclusive beauty production and confirm our earlier results on$B^0 - \bar B^0$ mixing. From a study of$b\bar b$ correlations we derive explicit cross-sections for semi-differential$b\bar b$ production. We compare the measured cross-sections and correlations to$\mathcal{O}\left( {\alpha _s^3 } \right)$ QCD predictions and find good quantitative agreement. From the measured angular distributions we establish a size-able contribution from higher order QCD processes with a significance of about seven standard deviations. A large nonperturbative contribution to these higher order corrections is excluded.

Abstract: The coherent production of 3π systems by charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei is studied in the bubble chamber BEBC exposed to the CERN SPS wide band beam. The coherent signal is attributed mainly to (ρπ) production, where the (ρπ) system is either non-resonant or comes from the decay of a1 mesons. The kinematical variables and the total cross section are compared with the predictions of the meson dominance model. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: We report on a new measurement of B 0 − B 0 mixing at the CERN SppS collider. Mixing is measured in the non-isolated high mass dimoun sample using data from the 1988–1989 collider runs. The measured value of the mixing parameter, χ, is 0.145±0.035(stat.) ± 0.014(syst.). The average of this measurement and that from our 1984–1985 data is ξ= 0.14 ± 0.029 (stat.) ± 0.017 (syst.) assuming fully correlated errors. Using the measurement of ξd from ARGUS and CLEO , we obtain χ = 0.50 ± 0.20, which gives a limit of χs > 0.17 (0.12) at 90% (95%) CL. Including the measurements of χ from the ALEPH and L3 experiments gives χs = 0.53 ± 0.15, and a limit of χs > 0.27 (0.23) at 90% (95%) CL.

Abstract: A significant intermittency signal is observed in 630 GeV p p collisions measured in the UA1 central detector. It occurs with similar magnitude in different variables: pseudorapidity, rapidity and azimuthal angle. The signal increases with decreasing charged particle multiplicity in the event. Its strength in a sample of low p⊥ tracks and its multiplicity dependence are not reproduced by commonly used Monte Carlo models of high energy interactions.

Abstract: We present a search for the decay W±→π±γ, using data taken at the CERN proton-antiproton Collider with the UA1 detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 pb−1. We do not observe a signal for such a process: hence we obtain an upper limit on the π±γ decay width of 5.8×10−2Γ (W±→e±v) (95%CL).

Abstract: The general characteristics of inelastic proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN SPS Collider are studied with the UA1 detector using magnetic and calorimetric analysis. Results are presented on charged particle multiplicities and transverse and longitudinal momenta, and on total transverse energy distributions at centre of mass energies ranging from 0.2 to 0.9 TeV.

Abstract: We report on a search for new heavy quarks decaying semileptonically into muons, using 4.7 pb−1 of data taken during the CERN$p\bar p$ collider runs in 1988 and 1989. The properties of isolated muons accompanied by jets are consistent with the predictions from the Standard Model but do not show a signal for a new heavy quark. Combining all the UA1 data (5.4 pb−1), lower mass limits are obtained at 60 GeV/c2 (95% CL) for thet-quark and 43 GeV/c2 (95% CL) for a fourth-generation charge-1/3 quark (b′-quark).

Abstract: The production of the neutral strange particlesK0, Λ and$\bar \Lambda $ invp and$\bar vp$ charged current interactions is studied in an experiment with the Big European Bubble Chamber. Mean multiplicities are measured as a function of the event variablesEv,W2 andQ2 and of the hadron variablesxF,z andp T 2 .K*± (892) and∑*± (1385) signals are observed, whereas there is no evidence for∑*- (1385) production invp scattering. Forward, backward and total mean multiplicities are found to compare well with the predictions of an empirical model for deep-inelastic reactions in the case of the strange mesonsK0 andK*± (892) but less so for the strange baryons Λ,$\bar \Lambda $ and∑*± (1385). The strange baryon multiplicities are used to obtain the decuplet to octet baryon production ratio and to assess the probabilities of auu orud system to break up.

Abstract: The coherent production of [pi] and [rho] mesons in [nu][sub [mu]]([bar [nu]][sub [mu]])--neon charged-current interactions has been studied using the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber filled with a heavy Ne-H[sub 2] mix and exposed to the Teva- tron quadrupole triplet (anti)neutrino beam. The [nu][sub [mu]] ([bar [nu]][sub [mu]]) beam had an average energy of 80 GeV (70 GeV). From a sample corresponding to approximately 28 000 charged-current interactions, net signals of (53[plus minus]9) [mu][sup [plus minus]][pi][sup [minus plus]] coherent events and (19[plus minus]7) [mu][sup [plus minus]][pi][sup [minus plus]][pi][sup 0] coherent events are extracted. For [ital E][gt]10 GeV, the coherent pion production cross section is determined to be (3.2[plus minus]0.7)[times]10[sup [minus]38] cm[sup 2] per neon nucleus whereas the coherent [rho] production cross section is (2.1[plus minus]0.8)[times]10[sup [minus]38] cm[sup 2] per neon nucleus. These cross sections and the kinematical characteristics of the coherent events at [vert bar][ital t][vert bar][lt]0.1 GeV[sup 2] are found to be in general agreement with the predictions of a model based on the hadron dominance and, in the pion case, on the partially conserved axial-vector current hypothesis. Also discussed is the coherent production of systems consisting of three pions.

Abstract: The diffractive production of charmed strangeD s * and possiblyD s mesons by neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons in hydrogen, deuterium and neon targets is observed. The slope parameter of thet distribution is 3.3±0.8 (GeV)−2. The production rate per charged current neutrino interaction with an isoscalar target times the D s + →φτ+ branching fraction is (1.03±0.27)×10−4.

Abstract: A search for multifractal structures, in analogy with multifractal theories, is performed on UA1 minimum bias events. A downward concave multifractal spectral function,f(α) (where α is the Lipschitz-Holder exponent), indicates that there are self-similar cascading processes, governing the evolution from the quark to the hadron level, in the final states of hadronic interactions.f(α) is an accurate measure of the bin to bin fluctuations of any observable. It is shown that the most sensitive comparison between data and the Monte Carlo models, GENCL and PYTHIA 4.8 can be made usingf(α). It is found that these models do not fully reproduce the behaviour of the data.

Abstract: From an exposure of the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber to the Tevatron quadrupole triplet neutrino beam, we have determined the ratio of neutral-current (NC) to charged-current (CC) interactions to be 0.288{plus minus}0.032 for events with visible hadron momentum above 10 GeV/{ital c}. The mean {nu}({bar {nu}}) event energy is 150 (110) GeV, which is higher than that for any previous beam. This result agrees with those from previous experiments at lower energies. The NC/CC ratio is derived for a combined sample of {nu} and {bar {nu}} events. A value of 0.274{plus minus}0.038 is obtained for the dominant {nu} component assuming {bar {nu}} NC/CC=0.39{plus minus}0.08. For events with visible hadron momentum above 25 GeV/{ital c}, where the neutral hadron contamination remaining in the NC sample is assumed to be negligible, the combined NC/CC is 0.323{plus minus}0.025 and the {ital K}{sup 0} production rates are 0.375{plus minus}0.064 per CC and 0.322{plus minus}0.073 per NC event. The corresponding {Lambda} rates are 0.161{plus minus}0.030 per CC and 0.113{plus minus}0.030 per NC event. The {ital K}{sup 0} and {Lambda} distributions of the fractional hadron energy variable {ital z} in NC events are consistent with those in CC events.

Abstract: We report on the first observation of the beauty baryon Λb in an exclusive decay channel at the CERN p p collider. Using 4.7 pb−1 of muon data collected in the 1988/89 collider runs we reconstruct 16±5 Λb's in the decay mode Λ b → J ψΛ above a background of 9±1 events, corresponding to a significance of about five standard deviations. We measure the Λb mass to be mΛb=5640±50±30 MeV/c2. Using the beauty cross-section measured by UA1 we deduce for the product of the production fraction and branching ratio f Λ b Br (Λ b → J ψΛ )=(1.8±1.0)×10 -10 . Our sample contains three-muon event in which the beauty particle opposite to the Λ b is tagged by the third muon. We also observe an indication of a signal in the decay channel B 0 → J ψ K 0∗ with a significance of three standard deviations.

Abstract: We report measurements of b-quark and B-hadron production in pp collisions at √s=630 GeV. We use muon samples to extract beauty production cross-sections over a wide range of transverse momentum in the central rapidity range |y| < 1.5. We compare our results to an O(αs3) QCD prediction and find good agreement over the measured b-quark transverse momentum range 6 GeV/c to 54 GeV/c. Using the shape of the pT and y distribution predicted by QCD to extrapolate our data, we infer a total cross-section for b-quark production at √s=630 GeV of σ(pp→bb+X)=19.3±7(exp.)±9(th.μb.

Abstract: An analysis of W and Z boson production at UA1, using 4.66 pb −1 of data from the 1988 and 1989 CERN p p Collider runs at s =0.63 TeV , yields R ≡ σ W Br(W→ μ v)/ σ z Br( Z → μμ )=10.4 −1.5 +1.8 stat.±0.8(syst.) We find R =9.5 −1.0 +1.1 (stat.+syst.) when combining all available UA1 data, in both the electron and muon channel, taken in the period 1983–1989. In the framework of the standard model, the value of R is used to infer the total width of the W boson, Γ W tot =2.18 −0.24 +0.26 (exp.)±0.04(theory) GeV/ c 2 .

Abstract: We report on a search for the decays B 0 → μ + μ − , B → μ + μ − X and B d 0 → μ + μ − K 0∗ , which are expected to be rare if mediated by flavor changing neutral currents. Using data collected during the 1984–1989 CERN pp Collider runs, the UA1 search was carried out using μ+ μ− events with 3.9 B 0 d →μ + μ − K 0∗ of of 2.3 × 10−5. Implicatitions for upper limits on the t-quark mass are discussed.

Abstract: We have measured the production cross-section times branching ratio for J/ψ→μ+μ− in pp interactions at √s = 630 GeV in the kinematic range |y| and p T >5 GeV /c, BR ( J /ψ→μ + μ − )σ( p p → J /ψ)=6.18±0.24±0.81 nb . The data sample collected in 1988 and 1989 for an integrated luminosity of 4.7 pb−1 represents a fivefold improvement over the statistics in our earlier study of the J/ψ production process, and the pT distribution which is measured extends to 28 GeV/c. Using event topology we show that the rate for the direct production of J/ψ, via radiative decays of χ states, is larger than that for production via B-hadrons. Production of ψ′ is also studied using the decay modes

Abstract: The Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber has been exposed to a quadrupole triplet neutrino beam produced at the Tevatron. The ratio of {nu} to {bar {nu}} in the beam is approximately 2.5. The mean event energy for {nu}-induced charged-current events is 150 GeV, and for {bar {nu}}-induced charged-current events it is 110 GeV. A total of 64 dimuon candidates (1 {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup +}, 52 {mu}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +} and {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}, and 11 {mu}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup {minus}}) is observed in the data sample of approximately 13 300 charged-current events. The number and properties of the {mu}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup {minus}} and {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup +} candidates are consistent with their being produced by background processes, the important sources being {pi} and {ital K} decay and punchthrough. The 90%-C.L. upper limit for {mu}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup {minus}}/{mu}{sup {minus}} for muon momenta above 4 GeV/{ital c} is 1.2{times}10{sup {minus}3}, and for momenta above 9 GeV/{ital c} this limit is 1.1{times}10{sup {minus}3}. The opposite-sign-dimuon--to--single-muon ratio is (0.62{plus minus}0.13)% for muon momenta above 4 GeV/{ital c}. There are eight neutral strange particles in the opposite-sign sample, leading to a rate per dimuon event of 0.65{plus minus}0.29. The opposite-sign-dimuon sample is consistent with the hypothesis of charm production and decay.

Abstract: The production of the meson resonances ϱ(770) (all three charge states), η(550), ω(783) andf 2(1270) in $$\bar v$$ Ne and ν Ne charged current interactions is investigated in a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC at CERN. Except for thef 2, the main features of resonance production are reasonably well described by the Lund model, although the average resonance multiplicities are overestimated by the model by (67±30)%. The average multiplicities of all resonances, including thef 2, are well reproduced by a semiempirical model, whose parameters were determined from hadron interaction data.

Abstract: We present results for the differential cross sections of neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons in the energy range E = 2−200 GeV, from the BEBC and Gargamelle experiments. The structure functions F2, 2χF1 and χF3 have been evaluated as a function of χ and q2. Deviations are observed from Bjorken scaling, which are very similar to those found in electron and muon inelastic scattering. For the Callan-Gross ratio, we find 2χF 1 F 2 = 0.80 ± 0.12 and the corresponding value for 〈R〉 = 〈 σ S σ T 〉 = 0.15 ± 0.10 . Our results are consistent with the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rule; we measure ⩾2.5 ± 0.5 valence quarks per nucleon. Quark and antiquark distributions are given. The Nachtmann moments of F2 and χF3 are quantitatively consistent with the predictions from QCD. The value of the strong interaction parameter is λ = 0.74 ± 0.05 GeV without corrections, and 0.66 ± 0.05 GeV including αS2 corrections. The moments of the gluon distribution are found to be positive and indicate an χ distribution of gluons which is comparable with that of the valence quarks.

Abstract: Inclusive ϱ0 production has been studied in antineutrino-proton charged current interactions, using a sample of 3340 events obtained in BEBC filled with hydrogen and exposed to the CERN wideband antineutrino beam. An average multiplicity of 0.11 ± 0.02ϱ0 per event at a mean hadronic mass W of 4.2 GeV is observed. The ϱ0 production characteristics are determined as functions of pT, xF, and z. The ratio ϱ0/“π0” is found to be low at small z values consistent with centrally produced pions coming mainly from resonances. At large z values this ratio approaches 0.45 ± 0.15 which is compatible with a vector/pseudoscalar meson direct production ratio of one. The results are compared with those obtained from neutrino-proton interactions in the same experimental set-up.

Abstract: The cross sections for ν and ν neutral current interactions for which the hadron energy is >15 GeV have been measured. These results, and the ratios of neutral current to charged current cross sections, are in agreement with the Weinberg-Salam model. Values of sin 2 θ W have been obtained both with and without the use of a parameterisation for the hadronic part of the interaction; the values are in good agreement with each other and the preferred result, that obtained by the method independent of hadronic models, is sin 2 θ W = 0.22 ± 0.05.

Abstract: Antiproton-proton annihilations into final states containing one or two K10-mesons are studied on the basis of 450 000 pictures from the CERN 2 m HBC. The experiment covers the domain of antiproton incident momentum from 1.50 to 2.04 GeV/c. The resonance production rates are computed for the most abundant channels. The K10K10 threshold effect is explained through the inelastic channel π+π− → K10K10. The decay modes D, E → δ±(975)π∓, δ±(975) → K10K± are pointed out. The strange mesons C and C′ are observed in these annihilations and come mainly from the two-body channels $p\bar p$ → (C, C′)K and$p\bar p$ → (C, C′)K*.

Abstract: Antineutrino interactions in BEBC are compared to look for differences between the differential cross sections per nucleon in neon and in deuterium. The identical geometries, beam spectra and muon identification criteria and acceptances allow comparison with very small systematic errors. The results are compared in detail with μ and e scattering data from EMC and SLAC. Abstract: Bose-Einstein correlations have been measured at the SPS collider at centre-of-mass energies from √ s =0.2 to 0.9 TeV. The size and the incoherence parameter of the particle emitting region have been determined as a function of charged particle density in pseudorapidity Δ n /Δη, centre-of-mass energy and the direction of emission of the charged particles. For fixed values of Δ n /Δη the size of the interaction region and the incoherence parameter remain constant with rising √ s . At fixed √ s , the size of the interaction region increases with rising charged particle density while the incoherence parameter decreases.

Abstract: The charged-current cross sections for neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons in the energy range 20–200 GeV are given. Taken in conjunction with the previous Gargamelle results, they show that σ E is almost constant with energy for antineutrinos, and falls with energy for neutrinos. The value of 〈q 2 〉 E decreases with energy for both neutrinos and antineutrinos, and these deviations from exact Bjorken scaling are consistent with those observed in electron and muon inelastic scattering. We find no evidence for new heavy quark states with right-handed coupling.

Abstract: A study of 54930 events of type pp to pi + pi + pi - pi - pi 0 shows evidence for two nearly mass degenerate enhancements in the omega pi mass plots at a mass near to 1200 MeV/c2. This result is in agreement with that reported from annihilations at rest by Frenkiel et al. (see Nucl. Phys., vol.B47, p.61 of 1972).

33. K−p reactions from 0.960 to 1.355 GeV/c involving two-body final states

Abstract: Data are presented from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment to study K−p interactions in the c.m. energy range 1775 to 1957 MeV. For the reactions K−p → K−p, K − p → K 0 n , K−p → Λπ0 and K−p → Σ±π∓ channel cross sections, differential cross sections and, where appropriate, polarisation distributions have been obtained. The channel cross sections for K−p → Σ0π0 are presented. In general the results are in agreement with those previously published although a significant discrepancy has been found in the Σ±π∓ cross sections at the lower energies. New measurements of the Σ± lifetimes have also been obtained (τΣ− = 1.49 ± 0.03 × 10−10 sec, τΣ+ = 0.807 ± 0.013 × 10−10 sec).

Abstract: The inclusive production of K0's and Λ's has been investigated in neutrino and antineutrino interactions in BEBC, filled with a neon-hydrogen mixture. The inclusive rates for the 3083 (1022) ν (ν) induced charged current events are (23.0 ± 1.7)% ((21.9 ± 2.8)%) for K0's and (5.7 ± 0.7)% ((6.5 ± 1.2)%) for Λ's. The general behaviour of the K0's and Λ's is found to be similar to that in νp interactions and π+p interactions at lower 〈W〉. In the hadronic c.m.s. K0's are produced mostly forwards, Λ's predominantly in the backward hemisphere. The data indicate that K0's produced in ν interactions on average carry a larger fraction of the total available momentum than those in ν induced reactions. The dependences of the average transverse momentum on the variables Q2, W2 and Bjorken x are presented.

Abstract: We present partial-wave analyses of the reactions KN→KN, KN→Σπ, KN→Λπ, using world data from 1480 to 2170 MeV c.m. energy including new data in the range 1775 to 1960 MeV. The three channels have been treated in parallel using enrgy-dependent partial-wave analysis techniques.

Abstract: The general features of hadrons produced in charged current interaction of high-energy neutrinos on nucleons are shown to be basically consistent with the idea of quark fragmentation within the framework of the quark parton model. However, many of the effects observed are shown also to follow from longitudinal phase space. Evidence is presented for a rise in 〈pT2〉 with Q2 in qualitative agreement with the predictions of quantum chromodynamics (QCD).

Abstract: Lambda hyperons fromv p and$\bar v$p charged current interactions have been analysed for polarization. A significant polarization is observed for Λ particles in the quasi-elastic region for both types of interactions. Part of this polarization is due to the decay of highly polarized Σ(1385) resonances. The results are compared with simple predictions of the quark parton model.

Abstract: A novel and efficient kinematic method is used to estimate the number of ν τ charged current interactions with E ν > 20 GeV in the BEBC beam dump experiment. The result, −14±12 ν τ events, is consistent with zero. The ratio of D s to D meson production in 400 GeV proton interactions in copper is estimated to be below 0.65 at 90% c.l. The oscillation probability P ( ν e → ν τ ) averaged over the electron-(anti)neutrino spectrum is found to be below 18%. The hypothesis that ν e and ν τ are identical is excluded by about 6 standard deviations. A remarkable event is described: it contains a muon, a high p T photon and a high p T hadron.

Abstract: An analysis is presented of the distribution of hadronic energy in neutrino and antineutrino neutral current interactions occurring in BEBC, filled with a neon-hydrogen mixture and exposed to the CERN-SPS narrow-band neutrino beam. This shows that the contributions by scalar or pseudo-scalar forms of the interaction are consistent with zero and pure V, A and V + A are excluded; there is good agreement with the Weinberg-Salam model.

Abstract: The average multiplicities of charged hadrons and of π+, π− and π0 mesons, produced in$\bar v$Ne and νNe charged current interactions in the forward and backward hemispheres of theW±-nucleon center of mass system, are studied with data from BEBC. The dependence of the multiplicities on the hadronic mass (W) and on the laboratory rapidity (yLab) and the energy fraction (z) of the pion is also investigated. Special care is taken to determine the π0 multiplicity accurately. The ratio of average π multiplicities$\frac{{2\left\langle {n_{\pi ^O } } \right\rangle }}{{[\left\langle {n_{\pi ^ + } } \right\rangle + \left\langle {n_{\pi ^ - } } \right\rangle ]}}$ is consistent with 1. In the backward hemisphere$\left\langle {n_{\pi ^O } } \right\rangle $ is positively correlated with the charged multiplicity. This correlation, as well as differences in multiplicities between$\mathop v\limits^{( - )} $ and$\mathop v\limits^{( - )} $,$\mathop v\limits^{( - )} $ scattering, is attributed to reinteractions inside the neon nucleus of the hadrons produced in the initial$\mathop v\limits^{( - )} $ interaction.

Abstract: Recent determinations of the mean lifetime of the Λ hyperon have given values significantly greater than the previously accepted world average. Using 34 000 Λ → p π − decays in the CERN 2m. hydrogen bubble chamber, we have measured the Λ lifetime to be (2.611 ± 0.020) × 10 −10 sec .

Abstract: A study is presented of μe events from an exposure of BEBC, filed with an heavyH 2/Ne mixture, to a wide band antineutrino beam at the CERN SPS. The promptμ + e − rate, based on the observation of 45 events withp μ>4 GeV/c andp e>0.8 GeV/c, is found to be 0.31±0.05±0.02%, in agreement with previous determinations made on much smaller statistics. The differential kinematical variables characterizing the events and the content of strange particles are as expected for the production of charmed hadrons which subsequently decay semi-leptonically. An upper limit of 2.0±10−4 at 90% C.L. is given for the production rate of promptμ + e + events. No evidence is found for a significant production of Beauty hadrons.

Abstract: The average transverse momentum squared, 〈p⊥2〉, of hadrons is studied as a function of W2 and of Q2 for ν and ν interactions on an isoscalar target. An increase of 〈p⊥2〉 with W2 is observed for the hadrons emitted forward in the hadronic c.m.s. The p⊥ dependence of the fragmentation function is found to factorise from the structure function at fixed W, but does not factorise at fixed Q2. Unlike the case of forward-going particles, the 〈p⊥2〉 of hadrons going backward in the c.m.s. shows no strong dependence on W2.

Abstract: Nearly 40000 neutrino and antineutrino interactions in BEBC are compared to measure the differences between neon and deuterium in the quark and antiquark distributions and in the nucleon structure functions. The ratio of Ne to D cross sections indicates some decrease between x∼0.2 and x∼0.6. The y distributions show there is no significant increase in the neon sea, but prefer a small decrease. Taken altogether, the x and y distributions and the measured total cross-sections indicate some change in the shape of the valence distributions. Abstract: A sample of over 25,000 fully measured neutrino and antineutrino charged current interactions in BEBC includes 192 dilepton candidates. The prompt signal after subtraction of background is 41 ±7μ+e-, 35±7μ+μ- events from {Mathematical expression} interactions, and 32±7μ-μ+ events from ν interactions. There are 2 trileptons, μ-μ-e+ and μ-μ-μ+. Results are compared with other experimental data and with the standard model. Abstract: The cross section for coherent production of a single π- meson in charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei has been measured in BEBC to be (175±25) 10-40 cm2/neon nucleus, averaged over the energy spectrum of the antineutrino wide band beam at the CERN SPS; this corresponds to (0.9±0.1) % of the total charged current {Mathematical expression} cross section. The distributions of kinematical variables are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the PCAC hypothesis and the meson dominance model; in particular, the Q2 dependence is well described by a propagator containing a mass m=(1.35±0.18) GeV. The absolute value of the cross section is also in agreement with the model. Abstract: In film taken with BEBC filled with a Ne(74%mol)/H 2 mixture and exposed to the CERN narrow-band neutrino beam (200 GeV), tenμ − μ + , one μ − μ + μ − and five μ − e + events were found in the ν exposure and two μ + μ − events and one μ + e − event in the ν exposure. Assuming the same production mechanism for μμ and μe events, the relative rates, corrected for identification inefficiency and background, can be combined and are (1.3 ± 0.4)% for (μ − e + + μ − μ + )/μ − in neutrino interactions, and (1.2 ± 0.5)% for (μ + e − + μ + μ − )/μ + antineutrino interactions. Eight out of the sixteen μ − l + events have a V 0 , leading to a corrected K 0 -multiplicity of 1.7 ± 0.7. No evidence is found for heavy-lepton production.
