Excerpt:'There is not in all London a quieter spot, or one, apparently, more withdrawn from the heat and bustle of life than Newsome Terrace. It is a cul-de-sac, for at the upper end the roadway between its two lines of square, compact little residences is brought to an end by a high brick wall, while at the lower end, the only access to it is through Newsome Square, that small discreet oblong of Georgian houses, a relic of the time when Kensington was a suburban village sundered from the metropolis by a stretch of pastures stretching to the river. Both square and terrace are most inconveniently situated for those whose ideal environment includes a rank of taxicabs immediately opposite their door, a spate of'buses roaring down the street, and a procession of underground trains, accessible by a station a few yards away, shaking and rattling the cutlery and silver on their dining tables. In consequence Newsome Terrace had come, two years ago, to be inhabited by leisurely and retired folk or by those who wished to pursue their work in quiet and tranquillity. Children with hoops and scooters are phenomena rarely encountered in the Terrace and dogs are equally uncommon.'

- Abstract
Pure Evil is one of our greatest fears. No appeals to reason, no pleas of mercy or forgiveness will have the slightest impact on the mind of the oppressor. These Evil entities, surely we can't name them as beings, include all sorts of monsters, demons, devils, vampires and other assorted ghouls that care little about the fate of you and I.

- Abstract
Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author's brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens'across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author? The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature. Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something. In this volume your flesh may creep and crawl a little bit as our classic authors delve into the world of vampires. Some stories you may be familiar with but for most these will be new and unsettling experiences.

E. F. Benson and E. F. Benson
- Abstract
Excerpt:'These stories have been written in the hopes of giving some pleasant qualms to their reader, so that, if by chance, anyone may be occupying in their perusal a leisure half-hour before he goes to bed when the night and the house are still, he may perhaps cast an occasional glance into the corners and dark places of the room where he sits, to make sure that nothing unusual lurks in the shadow. For this is the avowed object of ghost-stories and such tales as deal with the dim unseen forces which occasionally and perturbingly make themselves manifest. The author therefore fervently wishes his readers a few uncomfortable moments. Some of those tales have appeared before in various magazines; the remainder are new. One, the story of “The Man who went too Far,” is the germ of what subsequently developed into a book called “The Angel of Pain.”'

- Abstract
There is an intermediate ground between our knowledge of life and the unknown which is readily conceived as covered by the term mysticism. Mystery stories of high rank often fall under this general classification. They are neither of earth, heaven nor Hades, but may partake of either. In the hands of a master they present at times a rare, if even upon occasion, unduly thrilling—aesthetic charm. The examples which it has been possible to gather within the space of this volume are offered as the best of their type. The humorist, thank heaven, we have always with us. Spectres cannot afright him, nor mundane terrors deflect him from his path. He takes nothing either in earth or heaven seriously, as is his God-given right. Some of the best examples of what he has done in the general field of mystery are presented here for the first time in any collection.

- Abstract
Occult and Supernatural fiction is a genre of speculative fiction that exploits or is centered on supernatural themes, often contradicting naturalist assumptions of the real world. In its broadest definition, supernatural fiction overlaps with examples of weird fiction, horror fiction, vampire literature, ghost story, and fantasy. Elements of supernatural fiction can be found in writing from the genre of science fiction. Amongst academics, readers and collectors, however, supernatural fiction is often classed as a discrete genre defined by the elimination of'horror','fantasy', and elements important to other genres. The one genre supernatural fiction appears to embrace in its entirety is the traditional ghost story. He started his novel writing career in 1893 with the fashionably controversial Dodo, which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. - Abstract
Sibling rivalry can be a means of support but can also erupt into competitive traits of winners and losers. In this literary instance dear listener, YOU are undoubtedly the recipient of this rivalry. Having said that these are not the usual stories to be told in polite company, no, extinguish that idea immediately. These three brothers (their sister seems far too nice to be in a volume such as this), seem to dwell with dark thoughts, in shadowed recesses and with literary creations that linger in the mind for more than a while. Curious then that these authors are not only brothers but sons of the Bishop of Canterbury, whose 4 surviving children, never married.Edward Frederic, better known as E F Benson, a Cambridge alumni, was one of the most popular and coveted of the turn of the century authors, with a glorious way of creating soul-searing mayhem in the span of a few pages of a short story, as well as being a novelist, biographer, memoirist and archaeologist. His brother, Arthur Christopher, also a Cambridge graduate, and better known perhaps as A C Benson in the essay, poetry and academic circles was as accomplished and fiendish. The third Cambridge attending brother, Robert Hugh, and yes, better known as R H Benson, was a novelist across several genres and a short story writer who was also a Catholic priest. Perhaps that gave him an edge. Although not as well-known as his brothers it may be that the shadows he inhabited were a grand place to meet reprobates that are better known as the subject of scurrilous conversation rather than in the flesh.Taken together this band of brothers have the literary chops to rise above most others in the ghost and horror veins of fictional literature. Well, we assume its fictional, don't we?

- Abstract
Lucia's Progress and Trouble for Lucia are the fifth and sixth novels in E. F. Benson's Mapp and Lucia series. They chronicle the ongoing battles of his most famous and irrepressible characters - Mrs. Lucia Lucas and Miss Elizabeth Mapp. Both women have been used to dominating their social circles; the idyllic seaside village of Tilling proves too small for both of them. Lucia is the more deadly of the two, with lofty morals, pretentious tastes, and a lust for power, while Mapp is younger, more forceful, and able to terrify her opponents into submission. While both are hypocritical snobs, Lucia is animated by splendid delusions of grandeur and Mapp by insatiable curiosity and chronic rage; their epic collisions rock their small society and provide the narrative engines for Benson's farcical masterpieces.

The Mapp and Lucia novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British characters in the 1920s and 1930s, many of whom do not work for a living, who vie for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Several of them are set in the small seaside town of Tilling, closely based on Rye, East Sussex, where the author Benson lived for a number of years and (like Lucia) served as mayor.

- Abstract
The vampire is now a fixture in popular fiction. Such fiction began with 18th-century poetry and continued with 19th-century short stories. Over time, some attributes now regarded as integral became incorporated into the vampire's profile: fangs and vulnerability to sunlight appeared over the course of the 19th century. Implied though not often explicitly documented in folklore, immortality is one attribute which features heavily in vampire film and literature. Much is made of the price of eternal life, namely the incessant need for blood of former equals. The critic August Nemo selected seven short stories that were essential to the formation of the vampire's folklore: - The Vampyre by John William Polidori - Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu - Mrs. Amworth by E. F. Benson - Dracula's Guest by Bram Stoker - Ligeia by Edgar Allan Poe - Clarimonde by Théophile Gautier - The Lair of the White Worm by Bram Stoker For more books with interesting themes, be sure to check the other books in this collection!
