Abstract

In this paper we report on the results of an exploratory study of knowledge exchange between disciplines and subfields of science, based on bibliometric methods. The goal of this analysis is twofold. Firstly, we consider knowledge exchange between disciplines at a global level, by analysing cross-disciplinary citations in journal articles, based on the world publication output in 1999. Among others a central position of the Basic Life Sciences within the Life Sciences and of Physics within the Exact Sciences is shown. Limitations of analyses of interdisciplinary impact at the journal level are discussed. A second topic is a discussion of measures which may be used to quantify the rate of knowledge transfer between fields and the importance of work in a given field or for other disciplines. Two measures are applied, which appear to be proper indicators of impact of research on other fields. These indicators of interdisciplinary impact may be applied at other institutional levels as well.

Abstract

As part of a larger project to investigate knowledge flows between fields of science, westudied the differences in speed of knowledge transfer within and across disciplines. The agedistribution of references in three selections of articles was analysed, including almost 800.000references in journal publications of the United Kingdom in 1992, 700.000 references inpublications of Germany in 1992, and more than 11 million references in the world total ofpublications in 1998.

Abstract

Exclusive incoherent electroproduction of the ρ0(770) meson from 1H, 2H, 3He, and 14N targets has been studied by the HERMES experiment at squared four-momentum transfer Q^2>0.4 GeV^2 and positron energy loss ν from 9 to 20 GeV. The ratio of the 14N to 1H cross sections per nucleon, known as the nuclear transparency, was found to decrease with increasing coherence length of quark-antiquark fluctuations of the virtual photon. The data provide clear evidence of the interaction of the quark-antiquark fluctuations with the nuclear medium.

Abstract

Spin-polarised atomic hydrogen is used as a gaseous polarised proton target in high energy and nuclear physics experiments operating with internal beams in storage rings. When such beams are intense and bunched, this type of target can be depolarised by a resonant interaction with the transient magnetic field generated by the beam bunches. This effect has been studied with the HERA positron beam in the HERMES experiment at DESY. Resonances have been observed and a simple analytic model has been used to explain their shape and position. Operating conditions for the experiment have been found where there is no significant target depolarisation due to this effect., REVTEX, 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The (e,e'p) reaction was studies on targets of C, Fe, and Au at momentum transfers squared Q{sup 2} of 0.6, 1.3, 1.8 and 3.3 GeV{sup 2} in a region of kinematics dominated by quasifree electron-proton scattering. Missing energy and missing momentum distributions are reasonably well described by plane wave impulse approximation calculations with Q{sup 2} and A dependent corrections that measure the attenuation of the final state protons.

Abstract

We present a precise measurement of the neutron magnetic form factor Gmn at low momentum transfer (q = 1.69 fm−1). From a simultaneous measurement of D(e, e′ n) and D(e, e′ p) we obtain the ratio of neutron and proton cross sections. The neutron detection efficiency is obtained from a separate measurement using tagged neutrons produced by H(n,p)n scattering of a monochromatic neutron beam. In contrast to previous determinations of Gmn, the present value is insensitive to the systematic uncertainties in the interpretation of the data in terms of Gmn and represents a determination of Gmn to ±1.7%.

Abstract

The ratio of neutron and proton yields at quasifree kinematics was measured for the reactions {sup 2}H({ital e},{ital e}{prime}{ital n}) and {sup 2}H({ital e},{ital e}{prime}{ital p}) at momentum transfers {ital Q}{sup 2}=0.125, 0.255, 0.417, and 0.605(GeV/{ital c}){sup 2}, detecting the neutron and the proton simultaneously in the same scintillator array. The neutron detection efficiency was measured {ital in} {ital situ} with the {sup 1}H({gamma},{pi}{sup +}){ital n} reaction. From this the ratio {ital R} of {sup 2}H({ital e},{ital e}{prime}{ital n}) and {sup 2}H({ital e},{ital e}{prime}{ital p}) cross sections was determined and used to extract the neutron magnetic form factor {ital G}{sup {ital n}}{sub {ital M}} in a model insensitive approach, resulting in an inaccuracy between 2.1% and 3.3% in {ital G}{sup {ital n}}{sub {ital M}}.

Abstract

Spin transfer in deep-inelastic Lambda electroproduction has been studied with the HERMES detector using the 27.6 GeV polarized positron beam in the HERA storage ring. For an average fractional energy transfer = 0.45, the longitudinal spin transfer from the virtual photon to the Lambda has been extracted. The spin transfer along the Lambda momentum direction is found to be 0.11 +/- 0.17 (stat) +/- 0.03 (sys); similar values are found for other possible choices for the longitudinal spin direction of the Lambda. This result is the most precise value obtained to date from deep-inelastic scattering with charged lepton beams, and is sensitive to polarized up quark fragmentation to hyperon states. The experimental result is found to be in general agreement with various models of the Lambda spin content, and is consistent with the assumption of helicity conservation in the fragmentation process., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; new version has an expanded discussion and small format changes
