Abstract

Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to develop a model for above-ground biomass estimation for Pinus radiata D. Don in Asturias.Area of study: Asturias (NE of Spain).Material and methods: Different models were fitted for the different above-ground components and weighted regression was used to correct heteroscedasticity. Finally, all the models were refitted simultaneously by use of Nonlinear Seemingly Unrelated Regressions (NSUR) to ensure the additivity of biomass equations.Research highlights: A system of four biomass equations (wood, bark, crown and total biomass) was develop, such that the sum of the estimations of the three biomass components is equal to the estimate of total biomass. Total and stem biomass equations explained more than 92% of observed variability, while crown and bark biomass equations explained 77% and 89% respectively.Keywords: radiata pine; plantations; biomass.

Abstract

Concrete sleepers are commonly used to constructed ballasted track infrastructure in demanding locations on heavy axle load (HAL) freight railroads with steep grades, sharp curves, and high annual gross tonnage. Center flexural cracking is one of the most common factors limiting the service life of concrete sleepers in North America, and rail seat cracking has also been documented as a performance concern. As such, development and implementation of a structural design method that enables optimization of sleeper design for varied applications and loading environments will reduce initial capital cost and recurring maintenance expense. Field instrumentation has been developed to reliably capture revenue service field flexural demands, facilitating a probabilistic design method for the flexural capacity of concrete sleepers with bending data as the primary input. This paper presents a design process based on structural reliability analysis (SRA) concepts whereby target values for reliability indices (β) for new designs are obtained and compared with existing designs for further design optimization. New (proposed) designs are quite different from current ones. The need for increased sleeper center bending capacity is indicated. Additionally, a reduction in rail seat bending capacity of approximately 40% is justified, reducing the size of the rail seat cross section by approximately the same magnitude. In most cases the proposed designs have fewer prestressing wires and a higher centroid of prestressing steel. In all cases the flexural capacities at the sleeper center and rail seat are better balanced from a structural reliability standpoint. The method proposed is applicable to ballasted track infrastructure constructed with monoblock concrete sleepers.

Abstract

An extensive study of the flexural performance of monoblock prestressed concrete sleepers in a light rail system was conducted as part of a research program funded by the Federal Transit Administration. Five consecutive sleepers deployed on the track were instrumented with strain gauges at their critical design cross-sections (center and rail seats) to obtain relevant flexural information during an uninterrupted period of 14 months. Results were compared with the projected design capacities obtained from the application of current design standards, resulting in glaring differences. The current design methodologies were deemed insufficient for the development of optimal design solutions for light rail applications. Furthermore, structural reliability analysis is employed to study the flexural capacity of the sleeper design. A capacity model based on the material and geometric properties of the sleeper design was developed. The demand model was derived from the field flexural data of over 27,000 train passes, fitting this information to predefined probability distributions. Four limit-state functions were defined to represent the typical flexural failure modes. The probability of failure was calculated using first-order reliability method, second-order reliability method, and Monte Carlo simulation. Ultimately, the analysis yielded consistent results for the three methods, showing largely low probability of failure at both design cross-sections under the studied demand level. In conclusion, the sleeper's capacity was higher than the existing field demands, indicating an overly conservative design approach.

Abstract

While forest roads are important to forest managers in terms of facilitating the exploitation of wood and timber, their role is far more multifunctional. They permit access to emergency services in the case of forest fires as well as acting as fire breaks, enhance biodiversity, and provide access to the public to enjoy recreational activities. Detailed maps of forest roads are an essential tool for better and more timely forest management and automatic/semi-automatic tools allow not only the creation of forest road databases, but also enable these to be updated. In Spain, LiDAR data for the entire national territory is freely available, and the capture of higher density data is planned in the next few years. As such, the development of a forest road detection methodology based on LiDAR data would allow maps of all forest roads to be developed and regularly updated. The general objective of this work was to establish a low density LiDAR data-based methodology for the semi-automatic detection of the centerline of forest roads on steep terrain with various types of canopy cover. Intensity and slope images were generated using the currently available LiDAR data of the study area (0.5 points m-2). Two image classification approaches were evaluated: pixel-based and object-oriented classification (OBIA). The LiDAR-derived centerlines obtained with the two approaches were compared with the real centerlines which had previously been digitized in the field. The road width, type of surface and type of vegetation cover were also recorded. The effectiveness of the two approaches was evaluated through three quality indicators: correctness, completeness and quality. In addition, the accuracy of the LiDAR-derived centerlines was also evaluated by combining GIS analysis and statistical methods. The pixel-based approach obtained higher values than OBIA for two of the three quality measures (correctness: 93% compared to 90%; and quality: 60% compared to 56%) as well as in terms of positional accuracy (± 5.5 m vs. ± 6.8 for OBIA). The results obtained in this study demonstrate that producing road maps is among the most valuable and easily attainable products of LiDAR data analysis.

Abstract

While timber crossties are widely used in North America, the popularity of concrete crossties has increased significantly in recent years. Concrete crossties require the use of premium elastic fastening systems to have a proper and stable system. The primary role of fastening system is to attach the rail to its support preserving track geometry. For this reason, past research has focused on its development and behavior. Even though a large amount of research has been conducted on heavy-haul freight railroad systems, little work has been conducted to focus on rail transit systems. Therefore, a field analysis of the behavior of fastening systems under rail transit system loading conditions has been executed, focusing on light rail transit loading conditions. To perform this study, revenue service field data were collected on a light rail transit system. The instrumentation used and how it was installed on site are described in this paper. The critical quantitative metric discussed in this study is the relative displacement of the rail with respect to the concrete crosstie. Analyzing vertical and horizontal displacements, as well as rotation, the performance of the fastening system can be evaluated. For this purpose, different sites on the same rail system were selected for study, comparing both curve and tangent track geometry. In addition to this, the movement of the rail under every axle of the light rail vehicle has been studied in detail. In summary, an analysis of how the rail performs in terms of displacement under light rail transit loading conditions has been completed. Based on field data, the analysis allows the reader to understand how the rail displaces under the given loads when it is installed in a ballasted concrete crosstie track and restrained by elastic fastening systems.

La definicion de las caracteristicas de la transformacion y nuevos usos en los productos forestales comienza con la mejora genetica, incidiendo esta en la seleccion de caracteres de interes para la aplicacion final. Ademas, la innovacion en la mejora ha incluido recientemente la estimacion de pesos optimos economicos para el establecimiento de los objetivos a alcanzar en aquellos caracteres susceptibles de afectar a la calidad del proceso o producto (madera para pasta, bioenergia, biorrefinerias o madera para uso estructural). Por otra parte, es importante destacar la introduccion de innovaciones para optimizar el aprovechamiento de los recursos forestales, donde el uso de nuevas tecnologias TICs, GIS, etc. estan permitiendo definir herramientas especificas que permiten garantizar la sostenibilidad de los citados aprovechamientos. En todo caso, la gestion de los recursos debe estar orientada a producto, para garantizar el suministro al sector industrial de madera de calidad y herramientas para manejar las caracteristicas especificas de la madera de cada especie, su impacto en el aprovechamiento, su calidad y valor anadido, asi como su mercado potencial. Entrando en el campo de la transformacion la industria necesita incrementar su competitividad de cara a hacer frente al deficit de suministro de material prima local de calidad, a la presion del mercado internacional cada vez mas global y de otros materiales ya consolidados en el mercado. A este nivel la optimizacion del aserrado, secado y proteccion de la madera constituyen los principales campos de innovacion. La ingenieria de productos de madera ha experimentado un autentico boom en los ultimos anos, con grandes innovaciones en las principales lineas de aplicaciones: chapas de frondosas y coniferas, contrachapado, tableros LVL, OSB y MDF. En cuanto a los sistemas de construccion el desarrollo de materiales implica mejorar el comportamiento acustico, la resistencia al fuego, la durabilidad, el impacto ambiental y la sostenibilidad y el comportamiento estructural de edificios con base madera que beneficien a ingenieros, arquitectos y empresas de construccion. Finalmente se describiran los nuevos desarrollos en productos de alto valor anadido. Estos programas de investigacion e innovacion cubren distintos enfoques a traves de la cadena de valor, desde el recurso hasta el producto. Destacaremos por su importancia y proyeccion futura las biorrefinerias, la bioenergia, las nanotecnologias y la biotecnologia.

Abstract

The finite element implementation of a constitutive model for viscoelastic materials with damage is presented. The material model, originally developed in [ S. Ozupek, E.B. Becker, Constitutive equations for solid propellants, J. Engrg. Matls. Tech. 199 (1997) 125–132] has been modified to allow an efficient numerical implementation in a finite element code. A step-by-step discussion of the calibration of the material coefficients is provided, including the calibrations of the damage and cyclic loading functions. The new formulation is illustrated with representative examples for pressurization of a solid propellant rocket motor.

Abstract

A new preconditioner for the conjugate gradient method applicable to the finite element analysis of near-incompressible finite elasticity is presented. The boundary value problem is discretized with a displacement/pressure mixed formulation.The pressure degrees of freedom are eliminated at the element level. The problem is linearized using a Newton—Raphson technique. Each linear system is solved using the preconditioned conjugate gradient. The new preconditioner is based on projections onto a subspace associated with the bulk modes of deformation. The condition number of the preconditioned stiffness matrix and consequently the rate of convergence of the preconditioned conjugate gradient are totally insensitive to increasing bulk modulus. The method has been applied to model problems in linear and nonlinear 2D and 3D using a near-incompressible hyperelastic material model. The performance of the iterative method compares favorable with direct solvers as well as with conjugate gradient methods for indefinite systems, in terms of storage requirements, operation count and CPU time.

Abstract

In the Eulerian description of metal forming operations usually rigid/incompressible viscoplastic material models are used. In this paper a quadrilateral 2-D finite-element formulation for incompressible viscoplastic flow analysis is developed. The element (QMITC) is based on mixed interpolation of tensorial components, and the incompressibility constraint is imposed via the penalty method. It is shown that the resulting element does not lock either in plane strain rate flows or in axisymmetric flows, that the oscillations in the pressure predictions (checkerboard) tend to zero when the mesh is refined and that the solutions for some typical benchmark problems are very accurate.

Abstract

The diagnosis of persistent or recurrent hyperparathyroidism after total parathyroidectomy with autograft in the forearm needs a correct assessment of graft function. In 6 patients with relapsing hyperparathyroidism after total parathyroidectomy with forearm implant, total ischaemic blockade of the arm bearing the parathyroid graft, produced a 'temporal implantectomy' with reduction of iPTH in those with graft hyperfunction. In 2 patients with proved supernumerary gland, total ischaemia of the 'graft' was not followed by iPTH changes. Total ischaemic blockade of the arm bearing the parathyroid graft is a valuable method for a correct assessment of graft function. It gives useful information in order to avoid or indicate a reoperation of the neck in patients who had previously undergone parathyroidectomy.

Abstract

Seventy-one patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) were retrospectively selected from within a defined area (Cantabria) in northern Spain, from 1975 to 1988. Excluding two non-resident cases, epidemiological analysis was based on 69 cases. The annual incidence rates were stable during the 14-year period of study with an average incidence of 0.95 (age-adjusted, 0.86) cases per 100000 population. No significant difference was found for sex, urban or rural residence and there was no significant seasonal clustering. Antecedent event were recorded in 57% of patients, the most frequent events being upper respiratory infection and gastroenteritis. No association between use of gangliosides and the syndrome was found. Eight patients had variant syndromes including Fisher's syndrome (2 cases), and axonal (4 cases) and sensory (2 cases) GBS. Recurrences occurred in 3 cases. Excluding nine patients with incomplete follow-up and two with Fisher's syndrome, clinical analysis was based on 60 cases. Patients were divided into three groups as a function of their peak weakness. Significant features of the severe group were a requirement for ventilation, presence of bulbar palsy or dysautonomia and a longer duration of the plateau phase. However, it was not possible at an early stage of the clinical course to predict future motor deficit. Four (6.7%) patients belonging to the severe group died during the acute phase of the disease. No specific treatment for GBS was given. Outcome was assessed by means of serial examination up to 24 months after the onset of symptoms using a functional scale. At 3, 6 and 24 months 70%, 46% and 12% of patients, respectively, had a poor outcome. Features associated with poor outcome at three months include speed of progression, duration of the plateau phase, age greater than 40 years, severe weakness at the nadir, presence of denervation and a small or absent compound muscle action potential of the median nerve.

Abstract

Peripheral blood concentration of intact PTH is a simple assay very useful in the diagnosis and evolutive control of secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic renal failure. Episodic secretion of PTH in CRF patients would affect interpretation of single random determinations. To evaluate the secretory pattern of intact PTH we sampled peripheral blood at 6-min intervals for 60 to 90 min from seven normal subjects (group I) and seven patients with chronic renal failure (group II: 4 with normal parathyroid function and 3 with hyperparathyroidism). The resultant time series of serum intact PTH and ionized calcium were assessed by computerized cluster data analysis program. Evaluation of episodic intact PTH pulsatile nature revealed that in group I, 3 out of 7 normal subjects presented 1 maximum and 6 subjects presented at least one minimum. In group II, 3 out of 4 CRF patients with normal parathyroid function presented at least 1 maximum and all four patients at least one minimum. One out of 3 CRF patients with hyperparathyroidism presented 2 maximum and all three at least one minimum. Despite pulsatile character intact PTH levels were maintained all the time within the normal range in control group and in CRF patients with normal parathyroid function. In CRF patients with hyperparathyroidism intact PTH changes were restricted within a level of hyperparathyroidism. Ionized calcium levels in control group remained virtually constant along the period and in CRF group fluctuated widely. Parathyroid hormone is secreted in a pulsatile fashion in normal subjects and in patients with chronic renal failure.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract

The incremental finite element equations for geometrically non linear problems are obtained via the full incremental form of the principle of virtual displacements using a Generalized Lagrangian approach. This leads to the expression of the tangent matrix in a straight forward manner and an example of application for 2D elasticity is presented. For large displacements/large rotations beam/shell problems the incremental equations are derived using a quadratic approximation for the increment of the reference vectors in terms of the nodal rotation increments. It is shown how this approach leads to a complete tangent matrix which in the examples analyzed seems to be competitive with respect to the simplified form obtained by linearizing the changes in the reference vectors.

The inhibitory capacity of uremic serum over some in vitro immunological events is well known.(1–5) This effect has been ascribed to the uremic toxins that are retained and not eliminated by extrarenal methods. Middle molecules (MM) could be included in these kinds of factors.(6) The depuration capacity of hemodialysis for the serum inhibitory factors has been tested in some studies with contradictory results.(1,2,7) Here we compare the acute effect of hemodialysis with three different membranes versus peritoneal dialysis in their ability to eliminate the uremic inhibitory substances.

Se estudia en 38 parcelas de 0,1 ha cada una las propiedades del suelo que más influyen en el índice de sitio (IS) de plantaciones de Pinus radiata D. Don de 10 a 54 años de edad y en su estado nutricional en Asturias, considerando diferentes variables de masa y distinto material parental. Los suelos estudiados presentaron un carácter fuertemente ácido, alto contenido de materia orgánica, relación C/N elevada, bajo contenido en bases y P disponible extraído por el método de Mehlich 3 (PM3). Las deficiencias más extendidas fueron en K y P, observándose en algunas parcelas deficiencias en Mg y Ca. Sin embargo, las concentraciones en N fueron siempre superiores al nivel crítico. El P foliar se correlacionó positivamente con la capacidad de intercambio catiónico efectiva y con PM3. El IS osciló entre 9,5 y 28,8 m y estuvo positivamente correlacionado con la concentración de P en acículas y con el K intercambiable en el suelo en todas las parcelas y negativamente con la pendiente y el N foliar en las parcelas desarrolladas sobre cuarcitas y areniscas respectivamente. Los resultados revelan la importancia de la elección del sitio y la necesidad de fertilización en los programas de reforestación. The relationships among soil parameters, tree nutrition and site index were examined in Pinus radiata D. Don stands in a climatically homogeneous area of NW Spain. Thirty-eight even-aged stands, ranging from 10 to 54 years, were sampled. In each stand, a representative plot of 0.1 ha was selected and different stand variables and parent material were considered. The soils in the study area are strongly acidic, with high proportions of organic matter, high C/N ratios, and low exchangeable base cation and available P concentration extracted by Mehlich 3 method (PM3). Although foliar N was sufficient in every stand studied, widespread deficiencies of K, P and, to a lesser extent, Mg and Ca were diagnosed. The foliar concentrations of P were positively correlated with PM3 and effective cation exchange capacity. The SI values ranged between 9.5 and 28.8 m and were positively correlated with foliar P and extractable K in soil. In the stands developed on quartzite and sandstone lithologies, the SI was negatively correlated with slope and foliar N respectively. Abstract

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a challenging liver disorder for hepatologists. We aimed to assess the pattern and causes of DILI in a tertiary hospital. We registered prospectively all patients referred with suspicion of DILI from 2018 to 2023. A total of 106 patients fulfilled the diagnostic criteria (30 caused by paracetamol were excluded; total number 76). The pattern of liver injury was hepatocellular in 55 (72%). Drugs causing DILI were antineoplastic (26%), antibiotics (24%), analgesics (12%), and recreational drugs (9%). Regarding clinical outcomes, 39 (51%) required hospitalization and 7 (9%) underwent a liver transplantation or died from acute liver injury. We identified 126 additional patients with DILI due to immune check-point inhibitors who were not referred to a liver disease specialist. Antineoplastic drugs have become the first cause of DILI in hospitals. 26. Long-term phosphorus removal by Ca and Fe-rich drainage filter materials under variable flow and inlet concentrations.

Abstract

Phosphorus (P) losses from tile-drained agricultural fields may degrade surface water quality by accelerating eutrophication. Among the different edge-of-field technologies, compact filter systems using different filter materials have been identified as potentially effective solutions for removing P from drainage water before discharge downstream. This study investigated the long-term (>696 days) P removal efficiency of 5 different filter materials in a column setup, using artificial drainage water (pH 6). Filter materials included two iron-based granulates (calcinated diatomaceous earth (CDE), ferric hydroxide granules (CFH)), and three calcium-based granulates (seashells, limestone, calcinated silicate/calcium oxide (Filtralite-P)). Experiments were performed under variable flow rates (0.037 and 1.52 L h -1 ; hydraulic retention time of 26-43 min and 18-30 h) and inlet P concentrations (0.14 and 0.7 mg L -1 ). An overall analysis revealed that the Fe-based materials achieved higher P retention than Ca-based materials. In particular, CFH was capable of retaining 99 and 98 % of the high and low inlet P concentrations, respectively. Conversely, limestone retained only 25 % of the high P load. CDE performed moderately well, independently of the inlet P concentration. Filtralite-P and Seashells performed well at high inlet P concentration but relatively poorly at low P concentration. Abstract

Phosphorus losses from agriculture have long generated concern due to the ecological impact on surface waters. Here tile-drained agricultural catchments are a critical source for concentrating and transporting phosphorus bioavailable forms or dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP). Hence, edge-of-field technologies have been introduced to reduce DRP loads. Filter systems have received special attention due to their targeted approach using a permeable filter material (FM) rich in DRP sorbents. This review explores the performance and applicability of FMs in the aforementioned context because of the growing number of studies. An overall analysis revealed that sorption is preferable to precipitation for DRP retention at the edge-of-field, and that FM pH and particle size affect sorption properties and subsequently DRP retention and lifetime. Thus, FMs with predominant amounts of iron and/or aluminium can be recommended. Such materials generally have an appreciable availability of DRP binding sites, strong bonds with DRP and short reaction times, as well as low desorption, which lead to good operation. On the other hand, FMs with predominant amounts of calcium and/or magnesium are restricted to catchments with favourable conditions unless they have optimal reactivity for DRP. The review also found that hydraulic retention time plays a key role in the performance and applicability of FMs, especially in those dependent on precipitation reactions. Therefore, it is crucial that FMs are designed, constructed and managed according to the catchment conditions-including normally varying flow rates and DRP concentrations-in order to ensure successful operation. The outdoor system is located about 150 km west of Vienna. Both stages are planted with Phragmites australis and the system has been operated for 4 years continuously. During this period the average value of the nitrogen elimination rate was 3.30 g N m(-2) d(-1). The indoor system comprises three parallel operated 2-stage VF systems and is located in the technical lab hall at BOKU University. The design of the indoor system resembles the outdoor system. However, there are a few differences: (1) the indoor systems are not planted, and (2) different filter media have been used for the main layer of the first stages. With the indoor system the highest nitrogen elimination rate achieved was 2.24 g N m(-2) d(-1) for the system with zeolite and impounded drainage layer. Similar results have been found in France for treating raw wastewater with VF and horizontal flow (HF) beds in series with nitrogen elimination rates of 1.89 and 2.82 g N m(-2) d(-1) for differently designed HF beds. The highest nitrogen elimination rates of 15.9 g N m(-2) d(-1) reported were for pilot-scale VF CWs treating high-strength synthetic wastewater (total nitrogen of 305 mg L(-1) in the influent) in Thailand. It has been shown that the outdoor two-stage VF CW system has one of the highest nitrogen elimination rates of CWs treating domestic wastewater.

Abstract

Seventy-one patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) were retrospectively selected from within a defined area (Cantabria) in northern Spain, from 1975 to 1988. Excluding two non-resident cases, epidemiological analysis was based on 69 cases. The annual incidence rates were stable during the 14-year period of study with an average incidence of 0.95 (age-adjusted, 0.86) cases per 100,000 population. No significant difference was found for sex, urban or rural residence and there was no significant seasonal clustering. Antecedent event were recorded in 57% of patients, the most frequent events being upper respiratory infection and gastroenteritis. No association between use of gangliosides and the syndrome was found. Eight patients had variant syndromes including Fisher's syndrome (2 cases), and axonal (4 cases) and sensory (2 cases) GBS. Recurrences occurred in 3 cases. Excluding nine patients with incomplete follow-up and two with Fisher's syndrome, clinical analysis was based on 60 cases. Patients were divided into three groups as a function of their peak weakness. Significant features of the severe group were a requirement for ventilation, presence of bulbar palsy or dysautonomia and a longer duration of the plateau phase. However, it was not possible at an early stage of the clinical course to predict future motor deficit. Four (6.7%) patients belonging to the severe group died during the acute phase of the disease. No specific treatment for GBS was given. Outcome was assessed by means of serial examination up to 24 months after the onset of symptoms using a functional scale. At 3, 6 and 24 months 70%, 46% and 12% of patients, respectively, had a poor outcome.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract

Peripheral blood concentration of intact PTH is a simple assay very useful in the diagnosis and evolutive control of secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic renal failure. Episodic secretion of PTH in CRF patients would affect interpretation of single random determinations. To evaluate the secretory pattern of intact PTH we sampled peripheral blood at 6-min intervals for 60 to 90 min from seven normal subjects (group I) and seven patients with chronic renal failure (group II: 4 with normal parathyroid function and 3 with hyperparathyroidism). The resultant time series of serum intact PTH and ionized calcium were assessed by computerized cluster data analysis program. Evaluation of episodic intact PTH pulsatile nature revealed that in group I, 3 out of 7 normal subjects presented 1 maximum and 6 subjects presented at least one minimum. In group II, 3 out of 4 CRF patients with normal parathyroid function presented at least 1 maximum and all four patients at least one minimum. One out of 3 CRF patients with hyperparathyroidism presented 2 maximum and all three at least one minimum. Despite pulsatile character intact PTH levels were maintained all the time within the normal range in control group and in CRF patients with normal parathyroid function. In CRF patients with hyperparathyroidism intact PTH changes were restricted within a level of hyperparathyroidism. Ionized calcium levels in control group remained virtually constant along the period and in CRF group fluctuated widely. Parathyroid hormone is secreted in a pulsatile fashion in normal subjects and in patients with chronic renal failure.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
