1. THE 450DAYS X-RAY MONITORING OF THE CHANGING-LOOK AGN 1ES 1927+654

Abstract

1ES 1927+654 is a nearby active galactic nucleus (AGN) which underwent a changing-look event in early 2018, developing prominent broad Balmer lines which were absent in previous observations. We have followed up this object in the X-rays with an ongoing campaign that started in May 2018, and that includes 265 NICER (for a total of 678 ks) and 14 Swift/XRT (26 ks) observations, as well as three simultaneous XMM-Newton/NuSTAR (158/169 ks) exposures. In the X-rays, 1ES 1927+654 shows a behaviour unlike any previously known AGN. The source is extremely variable both in spectral shape and flux, and does not show any correlation between X-ray and UV flux on timescales of hours or weeks/months. After the outburst the power-law component almost completely disappeared, and the source showed an extremely soft continuum dominated by a blackbody component. The temperature of the blackbody increases with the luminosity, going from kT ∼ 80 eV (for a 0.3–2 keV luminosity of L(0.3−2) ∼ 10^(41.5) erg/s) to ∼ 200 eV (for L(0.3−2) ∼ 10^(44) erg/s). The spectra show evidence of ionized outflows, and of a prominent feature at ∼ 1 keV, which can be reproduced by a broad emission line. The unique characteristics of 1ES 1927+654 in the X-ray band suggest that it belongs to a new type of changing-look AGN. Future X-ray surveys might detect several more objects with similar properties.

2. An Obscured, Seyfert 2-like State of the Stellar-mass Black Hole GRS 1915+105 Caused by Failed Disk Winds

Abstract

We report on Chandra grating spectra of the stellar-mass black hole GRS 1915+105 obtained during a novel, highly obscured state. As the source entered this state, a dense, massive accretion disk wind was detected through strong absorption lines. Photoionization modeling indicates that it must originate close to the central engine, orders of magnitude from the outer accretion disk. Strong, nearly sinusoidal flux variability in this phase yielded a key insight: the wind is blueshifted when its column density is relatively low, but redshifted as it approaches the Compton-thick threshold. At no point does the wind appear to achieve the local escape velocity; in this sense, it is a “failed wind.” Later observations suggest that the disk ultimately fails to keep even the central engine clear of gas, leading to heavily obscured and Compton-thick states characterized by very strong Fe K emission lines. Indeed, these later spectra are successfully described using models developed for obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We discuss our results in terms of the remarkable similarity of GRS 1915+105 deep in its “obscured state” to Seyfert 2 and Compton-thick AGNs, and we explore how our understanding of accretion and obscuration in massive black holes is impacted by our observations.

3. A NICER View of a Highly Absorbed Flare in GRS 1915+105

Abstract

After 26 yr in outburst, the black hole X-ray binary GRS 1915+105 dimmed considerably in early 2018; its flux dropped sharply in mid-2019, and it has remained faint ever since. This faint period, the "obscured state," is punctuated by occasional X-ray flares, many of which have been observed by NICER as part of our regular monitoring program. Here we present detailed time-resolved spectroscopy of one bright flare, whose spectrum shows evidence of high column density partial covering absorption and extremely deep absorption lines (equivalent widths over 100 eV in some cases). We study the time-dependent ionization of the obscuring gas with xstar, ultimately attributing the absorption to a radially stratified absorber of density ∼10^(12)–10^(13) per cu.cm at ∼few ×10^(11) cm from the black hole. We argue that a vertically extended outer disk could explain this obscuration. We discuss several scenarios to explain the obscured state, including massive outflows, an increase in the mass accretion rate, and changes in the outer disk that herald the approach of quiescence, but none are entirely satisfactory. Alternative explanations, such as obscuration by the accretion stream impact point, may be testable with current or future data.

4. The Destruction and Recreation of the X-Ray Corona in a Changing-look Active Galactic Nucleus

Abstract

We present the drastic transformation of the X-ray properties of the active galactic nucleus 1ES 1927+654, following a changing-look event. After the optical/UV outburst the power-law component, produced in the X-ray corona, disappeared, and the spectrum of 1ES 1927+65 instead became dominated by a blackbody component (kT ∼ 80− 120 eV). This implies that the X-ray corona, ubiquitously found in AGN, was destroyed in the event. Our dense ∼ 450 day long X-ray monitoring shows that the source is extremely variable in the X-ray band. On long time scales the source varies up to ∼ 4 dex in ∼ 100 days, while on short timescales up to ∼ 2 dex in ∼ 8 hours. The luminosity of the source is found to first show a strong dip down to ∼ 10(exp 40) erg/s, and then a constant increase in luminosity to levels exceeding the pre-outburst level &300 days after the optical event detection, rising up asymptotically to ∼ 2 × 10(exp 44) erg/s. As the X-ray luminosity of the source increases, the X-ray corona is recreated, and a very steep power-law component (Γ ≃ 3) reappears, and dominates the emission for 0.3–2 keV luminosities & 10(exp 43.7) erg/s, ∼ 300 days after the beginning of the event. We discuss possible origins of this event, and speculate that our observations could be explained by the interaction between the accretion flow and debris from a tidally disrupted star. Our results show that changing-look events can be associated with dramatic and rapid transformations of the innermost regions of accreting SMBHs.

5. A NICER Look at Strong X-ray Obscuration in the Seyfert-2 Galaxy NGC 4388

Abstract

We present an analysis of the time-averaged spectrum of the Seyfert-2 active galaxy NGC 4388, obtained by NICER. The intrinsic strength of the reflection spectrum in NGC 4388, the large collecting area and favorable passband of NICER, and a net exposure of 105.6 ks yielded an exceptionally sensitive spectrum. Using two independent families of models, the intrinsic spectrum from the central engine is found to be highly obscured but not Compton-thick. Enforcing physical self-consistency within each model, the independent treatments give formally consistent results: = - N 2.67+ 10 cm- H 0.030.02 23 2 or = ´ -N 2.64+ 10 cm- H 0.03 0.03 23 2. Past measurements made with Suzaku and XMM-Newton are in broad agreement with these column density values. A more recent measurement with NuSTAR (in late 2013) recorded a column density about twice as large; the robustness of this variability is reinforced by the use of consistent models and procedures. The neutral FeKα line in the NICER spectrum is nominally resolved and consistent with an origin in the optical broad-line region). The data also require ionized absorption in the Fe K band, similar to the “warm absorbers” detected in Seyfert-1 active galactic nuclei. The low-energy spectrum is consistent with a set of ionized plasma components. We discuss these findings and note that the geometric inferences that derive from this analysis can be tested with XRISM and Athena.

Abstract

Swift intensive accretion disk reverberation mapping of four AGN yielded light curves sampled ∼200–350 times in 0.3–10 keV X-ray and six UV/optical bands. Uniform reduction and cross-correlation analysis of these data sets yields three main results: (1) The X-ray/UV correlations are much weaker than those within the UV/optical, posing severe problems for the lamp-post reprocessing model in which variations in a central X-ray corona drive and power those in the surrounding accretion disk. (2) The UV/optical interband lags are generally consistent with t μ l4 3 as predicted by the centrally illuminated thin accretion disk model. While the average interband lags are somewhat larger than predicted, these results alone are not inconsistent with the thin disk model given the large systematic uncertainties involved. (3) The one exception is the U band lags, which are on average a factor of ∼2.2 larger than predicted from the surrounding band data and fits. This excess appears to be due to diffuse continuum emission from the broad-line region (BLR). The precise mixing of disk and BLR components cannot be determined from these data alone. The lags in different AGN appear to scale with mass or luminosity. We also find that there are systematic differences between the uncertainties derived by JAVELIN versus more standard lag measurement techniques, with JAVELIN reporting smaller uncertainties by a factor of 2.5 on average. In order to be conservative only standard techniques were used in the analyses reported herein.

9. X-Ray Structure between the Innermost Disk and Optical Broad-line Region in NGC 4151.

Abstract

We present an analysis of the narrow Fe Kα line in Chandra/HETGS observations of the Seyfert active galactic nucleus (AGN) NGC 4151. The sensitivity and resolution afforded by the gratings reveal asymmetry in this line. Models including weak Doppler boosting, gravitational redshifts, and scattering are generally preferred over Gaussians at the 5σ level of confidence, and generally measure radii consistent with . Separate fits to “high/unobscured” and “low/obscured” phases reveal that the line originates at smaller radii in high-flux states; model-independent tests indicate that this effect is significant at the 4–5σ level. Some models and Δt ≃ 2 × 104 s variations in line flux suggest that the narrow Fe Kα line may originate at radii as small as in high-flux states. These results indicate that the narrow Fe Kα line in NGC 4151 is primarily excited in the innermost part of the optical broad line region (BLR), or X-ray BLR. Alternatively, a warp could provide the solid angle needed to enhance Fe Kα line emission from intermediate radii, and might resolve an apparent discrepancy in the inclination of the innermost and outer disk in NGC 4151. Both warps and the BLR may originate through radiation pressure, so these explanations may be linked. We discuss our results in detail, and consider the potential for future observations with Chandra, XARM, and ATHENA to measure black hole masses and to study the intermediate disk in AGNs using narrow Fe Kα emission lines. 11. Swift Monitoring of NGC 4151: Evidence for a Second X-Ray/UV Reprocessing.

Abstract

Swift monitoring of NGC 4151 with an ∼6 hr sampling over a total of 69 days in early 2016 is used to construct light curves covering five bands in the X-rays (0.3–50 keV) and six in the ultraviolet (UV)/optical (1900–5500 Å). The three hardest X-ray bands (>2.5 keV) are all strongly correlated with no measurable interband lag, while the two softer bands show lower variability and weaker correlations. The UV/optical bands are significantly correlated with the X-rays, lagging ∼3–4 days behind the hard X-rays. The variability within the UV/optical bands is also strongly correlated, with the UV appearing to lead the optical by ∼0.5–1 days. This combination of ≳3 day lags between the X-rays and UV and ≲1 day lags within the UV/optical appears to rule out the “lamp-post” reprocessing model in which a hot, X-ray emitting corona directly illuminates the accretion disk, which then reprocesses the energy in the UV/optical. Instead, these results appear consistent with the Gardner & Done picture in which two separate reprocessings occur: first, emission from the corona illuminates an extreme-UV-emitting toroidal component that shields the disk from the corona; this then heats the extreme-UV component, which illuminates the disk and drives its variability. Abstract

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, >8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. Abstract

High-time-resolution X-ray observations of compact objects provide direct access to strong-field gravity, to the equation of state of ultra-dense matter and to black hole masses and spins. A 10 m^2-class instrument in combination with good spectral resolution is required to exploit the relevant diagnostics and answer two of the fundamental questions of the European Space Agency (ESA) Cosmic Vision Theme "Matter under extreme conditions", namely: does matter orbiting close to the event horizon follow the predictions of general relativity? What is the equation of state of matter in neutron stars? The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), selected by ESA as one of the four Cosmic Vision M3 candidate missions to undergo an assessment phase, will revolutionise the study of collapsed objects in our galaxy and of the brightest supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. Thanks to an innovative design and the development of large-area monolithic Silicon Drift Detectors, the Large Area Detector (LAD) on board LOFT will achieve an effective area of ~12 m^2 (more than an order of magnitude larger than any spaceborne predecessor) in the 2-30 keV range (up to 50 keV in expanded mode), yet still fits a conventional platform and small/medium-class launcher. 15. Revisiting The Spectral and Timing Properties of NGC 4151.

Abstract

NGC 4151 is the brightest Seyfert 1 nucleus in X-rays. It was the first object to show short time delays in the Fe K band, which were attributed to relativistic reverberation, providing a new tool for probing regions at the black hole scale. Here, we report the results of a large XMM-Newton campaign in 2015 to study these short delays further. Analyzing high quality data that span time scales between hours and decades, we find that neutral and ionized absorption contribute significantly to the spectral shape. Accounting for their effects, we find no evidence for a relativistic reflection component, contrary to early work. Energy-dependent lags are significantly measured in the new data, but with an energy profile that does not resemble a broad iron line, in contrast to the old data. The complex lag-energy spectra, along with the lack of strong evidence for a relativistic spectral component, suggest that the energy-dependent lags are produced by absorption effects. The long term spectral variations provide new details on the variability of the narrow Fe K α line. We find that its variations are correlated with, and delayed with respect to, the primary X-ray continuum. We measure a delay of τ = 3.3 - 0.7 + 1.8 days, implying an origin in the inner broad line region (BLR). The delay is half the H β line delay, suggesting a geometry that differs slightly from the optical BLR.
