Solar energy, as main energy supply that sustains life on Earth, is also an unavoidable component of the complex strategy in achieving a clean and fair energy transition and goals for sustainable development by 2030. The present work studies the potential of installing Photovoltaic Distributed Generation at Universidad Politecnica de Madrid – Ciudad Universitaria campus. To this end, the study focuses on the electricity generation, carbon reduction and economic feasibility of solar photovoltaic systems installation using and comparing two different approaches based on data input with different time resolution, simulation software and level of details. Results show that the optimal photovoltaic power that maximizes emissions savings also ensures the best economic return, and in addition coincides with the maximum solar potential of the Campus, which is about 3.3 MW. At campus level, approximately 77% of the photovoltaic electricity production would be consumed locally, which would suppose a coverage of about 40% of the total electricity consumption. Emissions savings could reach 30% and an in-depth economic analysis indicates that the project is highly profitable. These results and methodology could be used to assess the feasibility of photovoltaic systems at other universities and help entities study the solar potential of their buildings.

Due to its zero-marginal-cost, the high penetration of renewable energy sources in the electricity markets threatens incumbents’ business models who are gradually shifting towards fixed power charges instead of the traditional energy charges. The purpose of this study is to assess the impacts of these fixed power charges on the economics of PV systems under self-consumption schemes. Using real demand and generation data, simulations include detailed computation of annual billing savings, payback-time, self-consumption and self-sufficiency of a dwelling coupled with PV-battery system. A range of PV array and battery sizes are explored for different storage control strategies. Billing scenarios include a) only energy charges, b) Portuguese case (high energy charges and low fixed charges), c) Spanish case (low energy charges and high fixed charges), and d) only fixed charges. Results show that fixed charges require adding storage to residential PV systems. In spite of battery relative high costs, results also show that photovoltaics can be profitable with payback times below 10 years in all scenarios, as long as appropriately sized and with the suitable storage control strategy.

Self-consumption is modifying the classical structure of the electrical grids worldwide. This energy supply method allows a distributed energy generation and the possibility of involving citizens in the electrical grid. Many countries have defined or are defining rules regarding self-consumption because of the evidence of its unstoppable growth. From the technical point of view, there are numerous associated advantages to the self-consumption, nevertheless it represents a new challenge in the management and design of the electrical grids. In general, the main generation technology for self-consumption is the PV energy. The PV generators are installed in a facility and their generation can be considered as a reduction on the local consumption or even negative consumption. Therefore, high penetration of PV self-consumption will modify the aggregated consumption shape of the electrical grid. The electrical grid should be able to respond to this new shape by adapting generation, controlling consumption or using storage systems. In this paper, we analyze the effects of high penetration of PV self-consumption on the aggregated consumption of the Spanish electrical grid. For this analysis we use historical solar resource data from different cities of Spain and historical data of the aggregated consumption of the country. The results show that PV self-consumption can smooth the aggregated consumption shape, mainly during summer periods. On the other hand, the PV self-consumption can increase the variability of the aggregated consumption shape for high penetration levels.

The optical characterization of different PV modules for integration in buildings (BIPV) is presented in this paper. The investigated PV modules are laminated glasses (PV laminates) suitable for integration in façades and windows. They are made of different PV cell technologies and some of them present a certain transparency degree, making possible to combine daylighting properties with solar control and electrical generation. The approach is based on spectral UV/vis/NIR reflectance and transmittance measurements of the different considered samples, both at normal incidence and as a function of the angle of incidence when it is possible. The European standard protocols are used to determine the luminous and the solar characteristics of each sample, enabling the optical assessment of these PV modules as building elements. The results indicate the good properties of PV laminates in terms of daylighting and solar control capabilities allowing a feasible efficient integration in building façades and windows. The obtained characteristic parameters can be used to simulate the influence in the energy balance of a building of different types of PV modules integrated in façade or window elements. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents theoretical and experimental work that is being carried out in a grid-connected residential building demonstrator available at the Instituto de Energía Solar (IES) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) in Madrid, Spain. The house is provided with a building-integrated photovoltaic (PV) system coupled to a battery energy storage system (BESS), and a heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system (HVAC) based on two air-to-air direct expansion reversible heat pumps. Thermal loads, HVAC consumption, and PV generation are simulated using different dynamic models, and they are validated with actual data derived from monitoring the experimental campaign. A model of intelligent control of BESS is proposed, which aims to supply the selected application (HVAC load) with two control strategies: increasing PV self-consumption and grid-peak shaving. This model has been validated with experimental data (error < 10%). Furthermore, the study includes ageing and degradation effects on the batteries to make allowance for realistic lifetime assessment. The results of the case study show that in a building without a BESS, the self-consumption rate is about 30%; however, with the implementation of the proposed control, it could achieve approximately 50%, depending on the BESS capacity and the PV generator nominal power. Likewise, by using a combination of both strategies, it is possible to reduce both contracted power and energy consumption (77% and 49% respectively for case study).

Within the building energy saving strategies, BIPV (building integrated photovoltaic systems) present a promising potential based on the close relationship existing between these multifunctional systems and the overall building energy balance. Building integration of STPV (semi-transparent photovoltaic) elements affects deeply the building energy demand since it influences the heating, cooling and lighting loads as well as the local electricity generation. This work analyses over different window-to-wall ratios the overall energy performance of five STPV elements, each element having a specific degree of transparency, in order to assess the energy saving potential compared to a conventional solar control glass compliant with the local technical standard. The prior optical characterization, focused to measure the spectral properties of the elements, was experimentally undertaken. The obtained data were used to perform simulations based on a reference office building using a package of specific software tools (DesignBuilder, EnergyPlus, PVsyst, and COMFEN) to take proper account of the STPV peculiarities. To evaluate the global energy performance of the STPV elements a new Energy Balance Index was formulated. The results show that for intermediate and large façade openings the energy saving potential provided by the STPV solutions ranges between 18% and 59% compared to the reference glass.

One of the main characteristics of the Solar Decathlon Europe houses is that they run exclusively on solar energy, as part of the requirements of this worldwide competition for universities. This obligation stimulates the university Teams to search for innovative solutions to integrate photovoltaic technologies in their houses, searching for the best options that combine design with energy efficiency, energy performance and construction. The main tendencies, advances and solutions are presented.

The uncertainty associated to the forecast of photovoltaic generation is a major drawback for the widespread introduction of this technology into electricity grids. This uncertainty is a challenge in the design and operation of electrical systems that include photovoltaic generation. Demand-Side Management (DSM) techniques are widely used to modify energy consumption. If local photovoltaic generation is available, DSM techniques can use generation forecast to schedule the local consumption. On the other hand, local storage systems can be used to separate electricity availability from instantaneous generation; therefore, the effects of forecast error in the electrical system are reduced. The effects of uncertainty associated to the forecast of photovoltaic generation in a residential electrical system equipped with DSM techniques and a local storage system are analyzed in this paper. The study has been performed in a solar house that is able to displace a residential user?s load pattern, manage local storage and estimate forecasts of electricity generation. A series of real experiments and simulations have carried out on the house. The results of this experiments show that the use of Demand Side Management (DSM) and local storage reduces to 2% the uncertainty on the energy exchanged with the grid. In the case that the photovoltaic system would operate as a pure electricity generator feeding all generated electricity into grid, the uncertainty would raise to around 40%.

Building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems are a relevant application of photovoltaics. In countries belonging to the International Energy Agency countries, 24% of total installed PV power corresponds to BIPV systems. Electricity losses caused by shadows over the PV generator have a significant impact on the performance of BIPV systems, being the major source of electricity losses. This paper presents a methodology to estimate electricity produced by BIPV systems which incorporates a model for shading losses. The proposed methodology has been validated on a one year study with real data from two similar PV systems placed on the south façade of a building belonging to the Technical University of Madrid. This study has covered all weather conditions: clear, partially overcast and fully overcast sky. Results of this study are shown at different time scales, resulting that the errors committed by the best performing model are below 1% and 3% in annual and daily electricity estimation. The use of models which account for the reduced performance at low irradiance levels also improves the estimation of generated electricity.

In this paper, a methodology for the integral energy performance characterization (thermal, daylighting and electrical behavior) of semi-transparent photovoltaic modules (STPV) under real operation conditions is presented. An outdoor testing facility to analyze simultaneously thermal, luminous and electrical performance of the devices has been designed, constructed and validated. The system, composed of three independent measurement subsystems, has been operated in Madrid with four prototypes of a-Si STPV modules, each one corresponding to a specific degree of transparency. The extensive experimental campaign, continued for a whole year rotating the modules under test, has validated the reliability of the testing facility under varying environmental conditions. The thermal analyses show that both the solar protection and insulating properties of the laminated prototypes are lower than those achieved by a reference glazing whose characteristics are in accordance with the Spanish Technical Building Code. Daylighting analysis shows that STPV elements have an important lighting energy saving potential that could be exploited through their integration with strategies focused to reduce illuminance values in sunny conditions. Finally, the electrical tests show that the degree of transparency is not the most determining factor that affects the conversion efficiency.

Over the past years, the photovoltaic (PV) market has been invaded with numerous power optimizers and micro-inverters that claim large energy gains when used in PV generators with shading or module mismatch. These products provide distributed maximum power point tracking (DMPPT), normally at module level, allowing the maximum power to be extracted from each PV module. This topology can be beneficial in situations where the PV generator is shaded or when there is large module mismatch. However, it is not clear that this power gain will result in energy improvements over a whole year or the lifetime of the system. This paper presents a very detailed and precise model for simulating energy gains with DMPPT as well as its verification and simulation results with different shading profiles, showing the possible energy gain over a whole year. Simulation results show that the yearly energy gain is much lower than the maximum power gain. However, interesting yearly gains of up to 12% are obtained in one of the simulations.

On-site photovoltaic (PV) and battery systems intend to improve buildings energy performance, however battery costs and monetary incentives are a major drawback for the introduction of these technologies into the electricity grids. This paper proposes an energy refurbishment of an office building based on multi-objective simulations. An innovative demand-side management approach is analyzed through the PV and battery control with the purpose of reducing grid power peaks and grid imported energy, as well as improving the project economy. Optimization results of load matching and grid interaction parameters, complemented with an economic analysis, are investigated in different scenarios. By means of battery use, the equivalent use of the grid connection is reduced by 12%, enhancing the grid interaction potential, and 10% of load matching rates can be increased. Project improvements indicate the grid connection capacity can be reduced by 13% and significant savings of up to 48% are achieved on yearly bills. The economy demonstrates the grid parity is only achieved for battery costs below 100 €/kWh and the payback period is large: 28 years. In the case with only PV system, the grid parity achieves better outcomes and the payback time is reduced by a half, making this a more attractive option.

A photovoltaic (PV) hybrid system combines PV with other forms of electricity generation, usually a diesel generator. The system presented in this paper uses concentration photovoltaic (CPV) as the main generator in combination with a storage system and the grid, configured as the backup power supply. The load of the system consists of an air conditioning system of an office building. This paper presents the results obtained from the first months of operation of the CPV hybrid system installed at Instituto de Sistemas Fotovoltaicos de Concentracion facilities together with exhaustive simulations in order to model the system behaviour and be able to improve the self-consumption ratio. This system represents a first approach to the use of a CPV in office buildings complemented by an existing AC-coupled hybrid system. The contribution of this paper to the analysis of this new system and the existing tools available for its simulation, at least a part of it, can be considered as a starting point for the development of these kinds of systems. In Brazil, a low-latitude country characterized by its high availability and uniformity of solar radiation, the use of PV solar energy integrated in buildings is still incipient. However, at the moment there are several initiatives which give some hints that lead to think that there will be a change shortly. In countries where this technology is already a daily reality, such as Germany, Japan or Spain, the recommendations and basic criteria to avoid losses due to orientation and tilt are widespread. Extrapolating those measures used in high latitudes to all regions, without a previous deeper analysis, is standard practice. They do not always correspond to reality, what frequently leads to false assumptions and may become an obstacle in a country which is taking the first step in this area. In this paper, the solar potential yield for different surfaces in Brazilian cities (located at latitudes between 0° and 30°S) are analyzed with the aim of providing the necessary tools to evaluate the suitability of the buildings’ envelopes for photovoltaic use.

With the rising prices of the retail electricity and the decreasing cost of the PV technology, grid parity with commercial electricity will soon become a reality in Europe. This fact, together with less attractive PV feed-in-tariffs in the near future and incentives to promote self-consumption suggest, that new operation modes for the PV Distributed Generation should be explored; differently from the traditional approach which is only based on maximizing the exported electricity to the grid. The smart metering is experiencing a growth in Europe and the United States but the possibilities of its use are still uncertain, in our system we propose their use to manage the storage and to allow the user to know their electrical power and energy balances. The ADSM has many benefits studied previously but also it has important challenges, in this paper we can observe and ADSM implementation example where we propose a solution to these challenges. In this paper we study the effects of the Active Demand-Side Management (ADSM) and storage systems in the amount of consumed local electrical energy. It has been developed on a prototype of a self-sufficient solar house called “MagicBox” equipped with grid connection, PV generation, lead–acid batteries, controllable appliances and smart metering. We carried out simulations for long-time experiments (yearly studies) and real measures for short and mid-time experiments (daily and weekly studies). Results show the relationship between the electricity flows and the storage capacity, which is not linear and becomes an important design criterion.

This paper focuses on a multi-agent coordination for demand-side management in electrical grids with high penetration rates of distributed generation, in particular photovoltaic generation. This coordination is done by the use of swarm intelligence and coupled oscillators, proposing a novel methodology, which is implemented by the so-call SwarmGrid algorithm. SwarmGrid seeks to smooth the aggregated consumption by considering distributed and local generation by the development of a self-organized algorithm based on multifrequency agent coordination. The objective of this algorithm is to increase stability and reduce stress of the electrical grid by the aggregated consumption smoothing based on a frequency domain approach. The algorithm allows not only improvements in the electrical grid, but also increases the penetration of distributed and renewable sources. Contrary to other approaches, this objective is achieved anonymously without the need for information exchange between the users; it only takes into account the aggregated consumption of the whole grid.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS As has been widely recognised, on our way towardsincreasingly renewable and DG supplied electricitysystems our entire electricity infrastructures will haveto undergo important transformations. In the long run,increasingly decentralised patterns of production andconsumption call for novel and decentralised appro-aches to energy and power management in production,transmission, storage and consumption of electricity.PV-DG is nowadays the most important DG technol-ogy using inverters and is increasingly being deployedin electricity distribution grids worldwide. With theaim of identifying existing technical barriers thatremain and solutions, as well as new opportunities thatarise in the context of future intelligent and renewablesupplied electricity networks, this paper has presentedan extensive revision of the state-of-the-art of themutual impacts between PV-DG and electricity net-works, with a main focus on power quality and safety.In general, it can be concluded that the technologyfor grid connected PV systems has matured greatlyoverthepastfewyears,althoughthereisstillscopeforimprovement, especially in relation to invertersimmunity to network effects. However, up to nowPVsystemshavelargelybeenconsidered asindividualsystems. It is important to broaden this view and alsoregard the total capacity of DG on the Europeannetworks. PV grid-connected systems can nowadaysoffer solutions to improve grid supply quality andprovide grid services. Whereas the modern architecture trends to an extensive use of glazing elements, buildings are increasingly required to minimize the external energy demand, cutting down the energy needed and covering the residual demand using local energy generation solutions. In this context, the integration of optimized Semi-Transparent Photovoltaic (STPV) elements seems to present a promising energy saving potential, leading to significant reductions of the heating, cooling and lighting loads while the on-site electricity generation is supplied. In mild climate areas, building glazings are required to perform as solar control systems with a low solar factor in order to avoid overheating. However, g-value is frequently unavailable in the data sheet of the STPV elements, making it difficult to design the optimal building solution. In the present work, an indoor testing facility to analyze the solar factor of STPV elements has been further developed and validated. The operating principles of the calorimetric system as well as the experimental data obtained in the validation stage are presented. Results show that the system accuracy and sensitivity are fully adequate to perform detailed analyses of the solar factor of STPV glazings. Furthermore, g-value variations with the transparency degree have been analyzed over different electrical operating points.

The need to characterise photovoltaic modules in the general field of ensuring technical quality in photovoltaic rural electrification (PVRE) has often been pointed out. The ongoing national PVRE initiatives announced world-wide, together with the fact that PV modules with an actual power smaller than the nominal value can still be found on the market, make it advisable to apply systematic control to supplied power procedures. This paper argues that it is possible to carry out such control in the case of crystalline silicon PV modules, by means of experiments performed outdoors under a wide range of operation conditions, and using reduced and conventional equipment. A simple characterisation procedure specifically aimed at PVRE programmes is described and validated with an extensive experimental campaign. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Solar Decathlon Europe is an international competition among universities which promotes interdisciplinary learning in engineering and architecture. Students from different disciplines participate in teams guided by several professors during a 29 month preparation period plus five weeks of on-site contest. The educational project involves designing, building and testing a solar energy house connected to the electrical grid with the strategy of maximizing self-consumption, supported by bioclimatic technologies and maintaining a low environmental footprint. It culminates in a on-site contest in which teams must assembly the house themselves, test it with ordinary real life tasks and finally disassembly it. The event has also a divulgative aim, trying to make students and visitors get interested in discovering the problems presented by real engineering and architecture applications. In addition, SDE covers R&D aspects in different fields such as energy efficiency, solar energy and bioclimatic architecture. This article presents the methodology followed during the SDE 2012 edition, in which more than 850 students participated. The obtained results show that the educational competition was a success according to the technical and professional ambitions of the students, most of them considering that their knowledge had increased in areas related to technical and multidisciplinary aspects. Division of labor is a widely studied aspect of colony behavior of social insects. Division of labor models indicate how individuals distribute themselves in order to perform different tasks simultaneously. However, models that study division of labor from a dynamical system point of view cannot be found in the literature. In this paper, we define a division of labor model as a discrete-time dynamical system, in order to study the equilibrium points and their properties related to convergence and stability. By making use of this analytical model, an adaptive algorithm based on division of labor can be designed to satisfy dynamic criteria. In this way, we have designed and tested an algorithm that varies the response thresholds in order to modify the dynamic behavior of the system. This behavior modification allows the system to adapt to specific environmental and collective situations, making the algorithm a good candidate for distributed control applications. The variable threshold algorithm is based on specialization mechanisms. It is able to achieve an asymptotically stable behavior of the system in different environments and independently of the number of individuals. The algorithm has been successfully tested under several initial conditions and number of individuals.

During the last decades, the photovoltaic (PV) modules and their associated architectural materials are increasingly being incorporated into the construction of the building envelope such as façade, roof and skylights in the urban centers. This paper analyzes the-state-of-the-art of the PV elements and construction materials which are advertised as BIPV-products at the most important companies in the world. For this purpose 136 companies and 445 PV elements have been investigated and analyzed from a technical and architectural point of view. Also, the study has been divided into two main groups according to industry which producing the product: BIPV-Modules, which comes from the PV modules manufacturers and consist of standard PV-modules with some variations in its aesthetic features, support or dimensions; and PV-Constructions Elements, which consist of conventional constructive elements with architectural features intentionally manufactured for photovoltaic integration. In advance for conclusions, the solar tile is the most common PV-constructions element, the Si-crystalline is the most widely used PV technology, and the BIPV-urban furniture is the fastest growing market experienced in recent years. However, it is clear the absences of innovative elements which meet at the same time both the constructive purpose as the quality standards of PV technology.

Several cities worked together through the European cooperation project POLIS on the identification of active and passive solar potential. Different studies were set up within a specific framework, using different methodologies in order to reach the shared goal. The following paper presents initiatives in Malmo (Sweden), Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain), Lyon (France) and Lisbon (Portugal). There are 2 main objectives for these initiatives. The first goal is to guide the development of solar energy on a large scale (ex: city level) by identifying the urban areas where solar energy could be easily implemented or where energy needs are very high. The second goal aims to bring information to inhabitants and building owners on the potential of their roof to encourage them to invest in solar. Providing this information requires detailed calculations and results readily understandable by the beneficiaries. It is usually implemented at the level of a district previously identified.

POLIS (Identification and mobilization of solar potentials via local strategies) is funded under the Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) Programme aiming at the implementation of strategic town planning and local policy measures to activate the solar ability of urban structures in European cities (www.polis-solar.eu). The aim is to present and evaluate current developments and bring together key stakeholders of this process to improve planning/legislation practice towards a solar development. With respect to the urban structures and composition of buildings the importance of solar energy is evident, since the shape of constructive structures and relevant surfaces are the basis for application of solar systems and for receiving passive solar gains. To ensure the solar use certain requirements need to be included in development planning and building legislation. In addition, existing buildings need to be qualified for the application of

In this paper, we describe the development of a control system for Demand-Side Management in the residential sector with Distributed Generation. The electrical system under study incorporates local PV energy generation, an electricity storage system, connection to the grid and a home automation system. The distributed control system is composed of two modules: a scheduler and a coordinator, both implemented with neural networks. The control system enhances the local energy performance, scheduling the tasks demanded by the user and maximizing the use of local generation.

PV Off-Grid systems have demonstrated to be a good solution for the electrification of remote areas [1]. A hybrid system is one kind of these systems. The principal characteristic is that it uses PV as the main generator and has a backup power supply, like a diesel generator, for instance, that is used when the CPV generation is not enough to meet demand. To study the use of CPV in these systems, ISFOC has installed a demonstration hybrid system at its headquarters. This hybrid system uses CPV technology as main generator and the utility grid as the backup generator. A group of batteries have been mounted as well to store the remaining energy from the CPV generator when nedeed. The energy flows are managed by a SMA system based on Sunny Island inverters and a Multicluster-Box (figure 1). The Load is the air-conditioning system of the building, as it has a consumption profile higher than the CPV generator and can be controlled by software [2]. The first results of this system, as well as the first chances of improvement, as the need of a bigger CPV generator and a better management of the energy stored in the batteries, are presented in this paper.

In this paper we present a heterogeneous collaborative sensor network for electrical management in the residential sector. Improving demand-side management is very important in distributed energy generation applications. Sensing and control are the foundations of the “Smart Grid” which is the future of large-scale energy management. The system presented in this paper has been developed on a self-sufficient solar house called “MagicBox” equipped with grid connection, PV generation, lead-acid batteries, controllable appliances and smart metering. Therefore, there is a large number of energy variables to be monitored that allow us to precisely manage the energy performance of the house by means of collaborative sensors. The experimental results, performed on a real house, demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed collaborative system to reduce the consumption of electrical power and to increase energy efficiency.

This paper presents the operation of an Electrical Demand-Side Management (EDSM) system in a real solar house. The use of EDSM is one of the most important action lines to improve the grid electrical efficiency. The combination between the EDSM and the PV generation performs a new control level in the local electric behavior and allows new energy possibilities. The solar house used as test-bed for the EDSM system owns a PV generator, a lead-acid battery storage system and a grid connection. The electrical appliances are controllable from an embedded computer. The EDSM is implemented by a control system which schedules the tasks commanded by the user. By using the control system, we define the house energy policy and improve the energy behavior with regard to a selected energy criterion, self-consumption. The EDSM system favors self-consumption with regard to a standard user behavior and reduces the energy load from the grid.

A characterization procedure for crystalline silicon PV modules has been developed, which can be used for quality control purposes by local laboratories of countries where PV rural electrification actions are being implemented. The method is simple both in the measurement and processing phases. It relies on the performance of outdoor measurements using basic equipment and reference PV modules as sensors for the operation conditions. Results are referenced to the standard test conditions and have uncertainty smaller than /spl plusmn/5% for a PV module maximum power determination, which is good enough to be considered within the frame of contractual procedures.
