Land surface models (LSMs) are pushing towards improved realism owing to an increasing number of observations at the local scale, constantly improving satellite data sets and the associated methodologies to best exploit such data, improved computing resources, and in response to the user community. As a part of the trend in LSM development, there have been ongoing efforts to improve the representation of the land surface processes in the interactions between the soil–biosphere–atmosphere (ISBA) LSM within the EXternalized SURFace (SURFEX) model platform. The force–restore approach in ISBA has been replaced in recent years by multi-layer explicit physically based options for sub-surface heat transfer, soil hydrological processes, and the composite snowpack. The representation of vegetation processes in SURFEX has also become much more sophisticated in recent years, including photosynthesis and respiration and biochemical processes. It became clear that the conceptual limits of the composite soil–vegetation scheme within ISBA had been reached and there was a need to explicitly separate the canopy vegetation from the soil surface. In response to this issue, a collaboration began in 2008 between the high-resolution limited area model (HIRLAM) consortium and Météo-France with the intention to develop an explicit representation of the vegetation in ISBA under the SURFEX platform. A new parameterization has been developed called the ISBA multi-energy balance (MEB) in order to address these issues. ISBA-MEB consists in a fully implicit numerical coupling between a multi-layer physically based snowpack model, a variable-layer soil scheme, an explicit litter layer, a bulk vegetation scheme, and the atmosphere. It also includes a feature that permits a coupling transition of the snowpack from the canopy air to the free atmosphere. It shares many of the routines and physics parameterizations with the standard version of ISBA. This paper is the first of two parts; in part one, the ISBA-MEB model equations, numerical schemes, and theoretical background are presented. In part two (Napoly et al., 2016), which is a separate companion paper, a local scale evaluation of the new scheme is presented along with a detailed description of the new forest litter scheme.

Changement climatique : quelle stratégie d'adaptation pour les territoires de montagnes ? Préface

In this study we analyzed how an improved representation of snowpack processes and soil properties in the multilayer snow and soil schemes of the Interaction Soil-Biosphere-Atmosphere (ISBA) land surface model impacts the simulation of soil temperature profiles over northern Eurasian regions. For this purpose, we refine ISBA's snow layering algorithm and propose a parameterization of snow albedo and snow compaction/densification adapted from the detailed Crocus snowpack model. We also include a dependency on soil organic carbon content for ISBA's hydraulic and thermal soil properties. First, changes in the snowpack parameterization are evaluated against snow depth, snow water equivalent, surface albedo, and soil temperature at a 10 cm depth observed at the Col de Porte field site in the French Alps. Next, the new model version including all of the changes is used over northern Eurasia to evaluate the model's ability to simulate the snow depth, the soil temperature profile, and the permafrost characteristics. The results confirm that an adequate simulation of snow layering and snow compaction/densification significantly impacts the snowpack characteristics and the soil temperature profile during winter, while the impact of the more accurate snow albedo computation is dominant during the spring. In summer, the accounting for the effect of soil organic carbon on hydraulic and thermal soil properties improves the simulation of the soil temperature profile. Finally, the results confirm that this last process strongly influences the simulation of the permafrost active layer thickness and its spatial distribution.

The performance of induction magnetometers, in terms of resolution, depends both on the induction sensor and the electronic circuit. To investigate accurately the sensor noise sources, an induction sensor, made of a ferrite ferromagnetic core, is combined with a dedicated low voltage and current noise preamplifier, designed in CMOS 0.35 μm technology. A modelling of the contribution of the ferromagnetic core to the noise through the complex permeability formalism is performed. Its comparison with experimental measurements highlight another possible source for the dominating noise near the resonance.

ERA-Interim/Land is a global land surface reanalysis data set covering the period 1979–2010. It describes the evolution of soil moisture, soil temperature and snowpack. ERA-Interim/Land is the result of a single 32-year simulation with the latest ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) land surface model driven by meteorological forcing from the ERA-Interim atmospheric reanalysis and precipitation adjustments based on monthly GPCP v2.1 (Global Precipitation Climatology Project). The horizontal resolution is about 80 km and the time frequency is 3-hourly. ERA-Interim/Land includes a number of parameterization improvements in the land surface scheme with respect to the original ERA-Interim data set, which makes it more suitable for climate studies involving land water resources. The quality of ERA-Interim/Land is assessed by comparing with ground-based and remote sensing observations. In particular, estimates of soil moisture, snow depth, surface albedo, turbulent latent and sensible fluxes, and river discharges are verified against a large number of site measurements. ERA-Interim/Land provides a global integrated and coherent estimate of soil moisture and snow water equivalent, which can also be used for the initialization of numerical weather prediction and climate models.

On the Antarctic plateau, precipitation quantities are so low that the surface mass budget is for an important part determined by exchanges of water vapor between the snow surface and the atmosphere surface. At Dome C (75° S, 123° E), we have frequently observed the growth of crystals on the snow surface under calm sunny weather. Here we present the time variations of specific surface area (SSA) and density of these crystals. Using the detailed snow model Crocus, we conclude that the formation of these crystals was very likely due to the nighttime formation of surface hoar crystals and to the daytime formation of sublimation crystals. These latter crystals form by processes similar to those involved in the formation of frost flowers on young sea ice. The formation of these crystals impacts the albedo, mass and energy budget of the Antarctic plateau. In particular, the SSA variations of the surface layer can induce an instantaneous forcing at the snow surface up to −10 W m−2 at noon, resulting in a surface temperature drop of 0.45 K. This result confirms that snow SSA is a crucial variable to consider in the energy budget and climate of snow-covered surfaces.

Moderate-Resolution Imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperatures in Antarctica were processed in order to produce a gridded data set at 25 km resolution, spanning the period 2000–2011 at an hourly time step. The Aqua and Terra orbits and MODIS swath width, combined with frequent clear-sky conditions, lead to very high availability of quality-controlled observations: on average, hourly data are available 14 h per day at the grid points around the South Pole and more than 9 h over a large area of the Antarctic Plateau. Processed MODIS land surface temperatures, referred to hereinafter as MODIS Ts values, were compared with in situ hourly measurements of surface temperature collected over the entirety of the year 2009 by seven stations from the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) and automatic weather stations (AWSs). In spite of an occasional failure in the detection of clouds, MODIS Ts values exhibit a good performance, with a bias ranging from −1.8 to 0.1 °C and errors ranging from 2.2 to 4.8 °C root mean square at the five stations located on the plateau. These results show that MODIS Ts values can be used as a precise and accurate reference to test other surface temperature data sets. Here, we evaluate the performance of surface temperature in the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis known as ERA-Interim reanalysis. During conditions detected as cloud free by MODIS, ERA-Interim shows a widespread warm bias in Antarctica in every season, ranging from +3 to +6 °C on the plateau. This confirms a recent study which showed that the largest discrepancies in 2 m air temperature between ERA-Interim and the global temperature data set HadCRUT4 compiled by the Met Office Hadley Centre and the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit occur in Antarctica. A comparison with in situ surface temperature shows that this bias is not strictly limited to clear-sky conditions. A detailed comparison with stand-alone simulations by the Crocus snowpack model, forced by ERA-Interim, and with the ERA-Interim/land simulations, shows that the warm bias may be due primarily to an overestimation of the surface turbulent fluxes in very stable conditions. Numerical experiments with Crocus show that a small change in the parameterization of the effects of stability on the surface exchange coefficients can significantly impact the snow surface temperature. The ERA-Interim warm bias appears to be likely due to an overestimation of the surface exchange coefficients under very stable conditions.

Water stable isotopes in Greenland ice core data provide key paleoclimatic information, and have been compared with precipitation isotopic composition simulated by isotopically enabled atmospheric models. However, post-depositional processes linked with snow metamorphism remain poorly documented. For this purpose, monitoring of the isotopic composition (δ18O, δD) of near-surface water vapor, precipitation and samples of the top (0.5 cm) snow surface has been conducted during two summers (2011–2012) at NEEM, NW Greenland. The samples also include a subset of 17O-excess measurements over 4 days, and the measurements span the 2012 Greenland heat wave. Our observations are consistent with calculations assuming isotopic equilibrium between surface snow and water vapor. We observe a strong correlation between near-surface vapor δ18O and air temperature (0.85 ± 0.11‰ °C−1 (R = 0.76) for 2012). The correlation with air temperature is not observed in precipitation data or surface snow data. Deuterium excess (d-excess) is strongly anti-correlated with δ18O with a stronger slope for vapor than for precipitation and snow surface data. During nine 1–5-day periods between precipitation events, our data demonstrate parallel changes of δ18O and d-excess in surface snow and near-surface vapor. The changes in δ18O of the vapor are similar or larger than those of the snow δ18O. It is estimated using the CROCUS snow model that 6 to 20% of the surface snow mass is exchanged with the atmosphere. In our data, the sign of surface snow isotopic changes is not related to the sign or magnitude of sublimation or deposition. Comparisons with atmospheric models show that day-to-day variations in near-surface vapor isotopic composition are driven by synoptic variations and changes in air mass trajectories and distillation histories. We suggest that, in between precipitation events, changes in the surface snow isotopic composition are driven by these changes in near-surface vapor isotopic composition. This is consistent with an estimated 60% mass turnover of surface snow per day driven by snow recrystallization processes under NEEM summer surface snow temperature gradients. Our findings have implications for ice core data interpretation and model–data comparisons, and call for further process studies.

The permeability (K) of snow to air flow affects the transfer of energy, water vapor and chemical species between the snow and the atmosphere. Yet today little is known about the temporal evolution of snow permeability as a function of metamorphic regime. Furthermore, our ability to simulate snow permeability over the seasonal evolution of a snowpack has not been tested. Here we have measured the evolution of snow permeability in a subarctic snowpack subject to high temperature-gradient (TG) metamorphism. We have also measured the evolution of the same snowpack deposited over tables so that it evolved in the equi-temperature (ET) regime. Permeability varies in the range 31 × 10−10 (ET regime) to 650 × 10−10 m2 (TG regime). Permeability increases over time in TG conditions and decreases under ET conditions. Using measurements of density ρ and of specific surface area (SSA), from which the equivalent sphere radius r is determined, we show that the equation linking SSA, density ρ and permeability, K = 3.0 r2 e(−0.013 ρ) (with K in m2, r in m and ρ in kg m−3) obtained in a previous study adequately predicts permeability values. The detailed snowpack model Crocus is used to simulate the physical properties of the TG and ET snowpacks. For the most part, all variables are well reproduced. Simulated permeabilities are up to a factor of two greater than measurements for depth hoar layers, which we attribute to snow microstructure and its aerodynamic properties. Finally, the large difference in permeabilities between ET and TG metamorphic regimes will impact atmosphere-snow energy and mass exchanges. These effects deserve consideration in predicting the effect of climate change on snow properties and snow–atmosphere interactions.

SURFEX is a new externalized land and ocean surface platform that describes the surface fluxes and the evolution of four types of surfaces: nature, town, inland water and ocean. It is mostly based on pre-existing, well-validated scientific models that are continuously improved. The motivation for the building of SURFEX is to use strictly identical scientific models in a high range of applications in order to mutualise the research and development efforts. SURFEX can be run in offline mode (0-D or 2-D runs) or in coupled mode (from mesoscale models to numerical weather prediction and climate models). An assimilation mode is included for numerical weather prediction and monitoring. In addition to momentum, heat and water fluxes, SURFEX is able to simulate fluxes of carbon dioxide, chemical species, continental aerosols, sea salt and snow particles. The main principles of the organisation of the surface are described first. Then, a survey is made of the scientific module (including the coupling strategy). Finally, the main applications of the code are summarised. The validation work undertaken shows that replacing the pre-existing surface models by SURFEX in these applications is usually associated with improved skill, as the numerous scientific developments contained in this community code are used to good advantage.

Detailed studies of snow cover processes require models that offer a fine description of the snow cover properties. The detailed snowpack model Crocus is such a scheme, and has been run operationally for avalanche forecasting over the French mountains for 20 yr. It is also used for climate or hydrological studies. To extend its potential applications, Crocus has been recently integrated within the framework of the externalized surface module SURFEX. SURFEX computes the exchanges of energy and mass between different types of surface and the atmosphere. It includes in particular the land surface scheme ISBA (Interactions between Soil, Biosphere, and Atmosphere). It allows Crocus to be run either in stand-alone mode, using a time series of forcing meteorological data or in fully coupled mode (explicit or fully implicit numerics) with atmospheric models ranging from meso-scale models to general circulation models. This approach also ensures a full coupling between the snow cover and the soil beneath. Several applications of this new simulation platform are presented. They range from a 1-D stand-alone simulation (Col de Porte, France) to fully-distributed simulations in complex terrain over a whole mountain range (Massif des Grandes Rousses, France), or in coupled mode such as a surface energy balance and boundary layer simulation over the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (Dome C).

It was found that although the impact would be very pronounced, it would also be extremely differentiated, dependent on the internal state of the snow cover. The most sensitive areas are the elevations below 2400 m, especially in the southern part of the French Alps.

La lutte contre la propagation des maladies infectieuses et les conséquences de celles-ci de manière préventive est particulièrement importante en santé des espèces aquacoles, du fait des difficultés d’éradication des maladies une fois qu’elles sont introduites, notamment en milieu marin. Par conséquent, la modélisation en tant qu’outil prédictif est particulièrement justifiée. Une revue bibliographique a été menée dans le cadre du projet européen DIPNET en vue de dresser l’inventaire des modèles utilisés dans le domaine de la santé des espèces aquacoles. L’appréciation quantitative des risques commence à se développer pour certaines maladies des salmonidés d’Europe du nord, visant à garantir les transferts, aider les programmes, surveiller et prévenir l’apparition de maladies émergentes. Les modèles dynamiques de maladies commencent à être utilisés pour la gestion du risque, pour les salmonidés et pour les coquillages (USA) mais sont, suivant leur complexité, coûteux en données et en temps d’élaboration. Les modèles dynamiques sont indispensables cependant, quand on veut tester prédictivement l’effet de telle ou telle mesure, dans un système complexe de causalité. Les études épidémiologiques rigoureuses sont rares en santé des espèces aquacoles, malgré leurs intérêts démontrés dans le domaine de la santé. Les modèles décrivant le phénomène d’un point de vue spatial, les conséquences écologiques et économiques sont également rares en santé des espèces aquacoles. Ceci est paradoxal compte tenu des fortes interactions entre l’hôte et son environnement dans le milieu aquatique, et compte tenu de l’intérêt pour le gestionnaire de risque. Ces approches nécessitent cependant un travail impliquant des compétences multidisciplinaires, qu’il n’est pas forcément facile de réunir pour les productions aquacoles.

Abstract Background Pulmonary lymphangiomatosis (PL) is an ultrarare disease characterized by diffuse infiltration of the lung, pleura and/or mediastinum by abnormal lymphatic proliferation. Consented diagnostic or treatment approaches are not established. We therefore aimed to collect data on diagnostics and treatments in a cohort of patients with PL from a tertiary center for rare lung diseases. Methods Clinical, radiological and outcome data from PL patients were collected retrospectively. Results 12 patients were diagnosed between 1996 and 2022 in our center. PL was diagnosed more commonly in female (58%), never smokers (75%) and younger patients (mean age 42 years). Main clinical symptoms comprised haem- and chyloptysis (58%) and dyspnea on exertion (83%). Pulmonary function was mostly restrictive (mean VC 59%) with impaired DLCO (mean 65%). Radiological assessment mainly showed mediastinal involvement (83%), and pleural effusion (67%), pleural thickening (67%) and bronchial wall thickening (67%) while interstitial changes were rare. Diagnosis was confirmed by surgical or transbronchial cryobiopsy. 8 patients were treated with sirolimus, 3 of these combined with a surgical intervention and in one case surgical intervention was necessary 9 months after initiation of sirolimus. Clinical and radiological improvement was demonstrated for all patients treated with sirolimus. 1 patient received a lung transplant due disease progression. Survival rates were 90% after a mean follow up of at least 3 months. Conclusion This case series illustrates the variability of the clinical presentation of PL. Among our patients, those treated with sirolimus showed significant clinical, functional and radiological improvement. However, further investigation is needed to understand the pathogenesis of lymphangiomatosis in order to establish therapeutic approaches.

As soil microbial respiration is the major component of land CO2 emissions, differences in the functional dependence of respiration on soil moisture among Earth system models (ESMs) contributes significantly to the uncertainties in their projections. Using soil organic C (SOC) stocks and CO2 data from a boreal forest–mire ecotone in Finland and Bayesian data assimilation, we revised the original precipitation-based monotonic saturation dependency of the Yasso07 soil carbon model using the non-monotonic Ricker function based on soil volumetric water content. We fit the revised functional dependency of moisture to the observed microbial respiration and SOC stocks and compared its performance against the original Yasso07 model and the version used in the JSBACH land surface model with a reduction constant for decomposition rates in wetlands. The Yasso07 soil C model coupled with the calibrated unimodal Ricker moisture function with an optimum in well-drained soils accurately reconstructed observed SOC stocks and soil CO2 emissions and clearly outperformed previous model versions on paludified organo-mineral soils in forested peatlands and water-saturated organic soils in mires. The best estimate of the posterior moisture response of decomposition used both measurements of SOC stocks and CO2 data from the full range of moisture conditions (from dry and xeric to wet and water-saturated soils). We observed unbiased residuals of SOC and CO2 data modelled with the moisture optimum in well-drained soils, suggesting that this modified function accounts more precisely for the long-term SOC change dependency according to ecosystem properties as well as the contribution of short-term CO2 responses including extreme events. The optimum moisture for decomposition in boreal forests was found in well-drained soils instead of the mid-range between dry and water-saturated conditions as is commonly assumed among soil C and ESMs. Although the unimodal moisture modifier with an optimum in well-drained soils implicitly incorporates robust biogeochemical mechanisms of SOC accumulation and CO2 emissions, it needs further evaluation with large-scale data to determine if its use in land surface models will decrease the uncertainty in projections.

The seismic design of precast structures hinges on unique characteristics intrinsic to precast technology. Emphasis is placed on lightweight structural elements for efficient on-site assembly and cost reduction. This leads to increased slenderness in beams and columns compared to traditional cast-in-situ constructions, accentuating the role of second-order effects. Dry pinned joints, favoured for connecting beams and columns, contribute to the overall efficiency in assemblage. Cast-in-situ concrete is typically reserved for connection to foundations and topping precast floor elements. Pinned joints transform the structure into an ideal isostatic system, with cantilevered columns anchored securely at the base, in designers' mind. However, this transformation reduces the energy dissipation capacity, preventing plastic hinge formation in beams and amplifying P-Delta effects in columns. The simplified approach proposed herein assesses dynamic instability in single and multi-storey precast hinged frames, providing a tool for expeditious numerical capacity assessment, useful at the initial design stage. The goal is to predict dynamic collapse and/or the attainment of specific seismic-oriented limit states based on fundamental structural parameters. Incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis, utilising far-field ground motion records, is employed to evaluate performance of a variety of precast structures modelled as equivalent single-degree-of-freedom systems. The outcomes yield inelastic spectra that provide insights into the structural capacity in terms of response modification factor and could help analysts/designers towards seismic performance-based design as well as the assessment problem. These spectra, which can themselves be taken as metrics for structural performance evaluation (in addition to as a reliable tool/means for design), are generated based on various structural parameters, including building height, column aspect ratios, and floor mass configurations, in relation to different limit states typically deemed crucial in the design of these structures for earthquake-induced actions. Regression analyses of median spectra show that polynomial expressions could fit them with good accuracy, as testified by a coefficient of determination in the 0.76–0.98 range for most of the cases.

Porous interpenetrated zirconium–organic frameworks (PIZOFs) are a class of Zr-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) which are composed of long, rod-like dicarboxylate linkers and Zr6O4(OH)4(O2C)12 nodes. Long oligoethylene glycol or aliphatic side chains are covalently attached to the linker molecules in the cases of PIZOF-10 and PIZOF-11, respectively. These side chains are supposedly highly mobile, thus mimicking a solvent environment. It is anticipated that such MOFs could be used as a solid catalyst – the MOF – with pore systems showing properties similar to a liquid reaction medium. To quantify the side-chain mobility, here we have applied different 1D and 2D NMR solid-state spectroscopic techniques like cross-polarization (CP) and dipolar-coupling chemical-shift correlation (DIPSHIFT) studies. The rather high 1H-13C CP efficiency observed for the CH2 groups of the side chains indicates that the long side chains are unexpectedly immobile or at least that their motions are strongly anisotropic. More detailed information about the mobility of the side chains was then obtained from DIPSHIFT experiments. Analytical expressions for elaborate data analysis are derived. These expressions are used to correlate order parameters and to slow motional rates with signals in indirect spectral dimensions, thus enabling the quantification of order parameters for the CH2 groups. The ends of the chains are rather mobile, whereas the carbon atoms close to the linker are more spatially restricted in mobility.

Soil organic matter (SOM) is a recognized carbon reservoir and paramount in soil functioning and agrosystems productivity. Different management strategies have been established to enhance SOM in arable soils, and one is the application of exogenous organic matter (EOM). Despite significant efforts in recent years, the consequences of EOM addition on increasing soil organic C (SOC) storage and stability in different pedoclimatic contexts remain incompletely understood. In this study, we evaluated the effect of long-term (28 y) sewage sludge (SS) addition to a calcareous soil supporting rainfed extensive crops in a Mediterranean sub-humid area in terms of SOC stabilization and distribution among functional fractions.To that end, we studied total SOM storage and soil fractions in a long-term experiment comparing 4 different doses of SS with mineral fertilization and no-fertilization controls. We compared the concentration, storage and distribution of C using two different fractionation methods (particulate vs. mineral-associated, defined by granulodensimetric fractionation, and active C vs. stable C defined by Rock-Eval® thermal analysis coupled to the machine learning PARTYsoc v2.0 model) on the tilled layer (0–30 cm). Three soil functioning indicators (crops yield, soil microbial biomass C and aggregate stability) were also quantified. We found that SS application, which slightly increased SOC concentration when SS was added, resulted in a net SOC stock gain only with the highest dose used (80 tons/ha), compared to mineral fertilization, suggesting that most of the C added was mineralized. An uneven response of soil fractions was however detected. The coarsest heavy physical fractions > 250 μm and 50–250 μm in size were the most enriched in their C concentration with SS addition, whereas SOC was mostly accumulated as mineral-associated C in the silt-size (2–50 μm) and the 50–250 μm fractions. Regarding thermal fractionation, SS treatments showed C gains between 57 % and 35 % in the active C pool, compared to mineral fertilization. This can be explained considering that the accumulated SOM in mineral-associated fractions corresponded to mean-residence times in the order of 20–40 years. The consequences on soil functioning indicators were not directly related to the amount of SOC stored in the soil, as the highest SOC gains corresponded to the highest dose, but not the highest yields, and some negative correlations were observed between SOC fractions and soil structural stability and microbial biomass. This can be related to some deleterious effects of excessive SS application reducing yields, the soil biological activity and soil structure, and represents an example of the need to decouple the assessment of soil health from that of SOC storage for certain soil management practices. The overall evaluation of the net consequences of long-term SS application indicated that low doses (10 tons/ha) seem a better choice, as they resulted in the highest efficiency in C incorporation, and in a slightly greater increase in SOC concentration than intermediate doses, and equal yields than mineral fertilization, but did not have the negative effects observed in soil functioning with higher doses.

AbstractDespite the growing interest in the evolutionary cytogenetics of squamates, chromosomal data are lacking for most taxa. We performed a preliminary molecular taxonomic analysis and a comparative cytogenetic study on Hemorrhois hippocrepis and Malpolon monspessulanus. We used a combination of standard karyotyping, Chromomycin A3/Methyl green staining, C-banding, Ag-NOR staining and NOR-FISH to provide the first karyotype description of H. hippocrepis and a re-description of the karyotype of M. monspessulanus, including chromosome markers, heterochromatin patterns and sex chromosome systems. Our results show that H. hippocrepis has 2 n = 36 chromosomes, with 16 macro- and 20 microchromosomes and NORs on the 6th pair. The 4th pair represents homomorphic (metacentric) ZW sex chromosomes, but the W chromosome is completely heterochromatic. Malpolon monspessulanus has 2 n = 44 chromosomes, with 20 macro- and 24 microchromosomes, NORs on the 6th telocentric pair. The 4th pair represents the sex chromosomes (ZZ/ZW), with a W chromosome smaller than the Z and completely heterochromatic. Comparing our cytogenetic data to those available from the literature, we note the occurrence and distribution of primitive and derived chromosomal characteristics and discuss the chromosome diversification in two snake clades belonging to Colubridae and Psammophiidae, respectively. We highlight that these two families followed different chromosome diversification pathways, characterised by a highly conserved karyotype structure in Colubridae and a higher chromosome variability in Psammophiidae, mostly driven by a progressive reduction of the chromosome number by means of chromosome fusions. We also provide cytotaxonomic insights supporting the distinction between M. monspessulanus and M. insignitus.

Image-based monitoring has emerged as a prevalent technique for sensing mountain environments. Monoscopic time-lapse cameras, which rely on digital image correlation to quantify glacier motion, have limitations due to the need for a Digital Elevation Model for deriving 3D flow velocity fields. Multi-camera systems overcome this limitation, as they allow for a 3D reconstruction of the scene. This paper presents a replicable low-cost stereoscopic system designed for 4D glacier monitoring. The system consists of independent and autonomous units, built from off-the-shelves components, such as a DSLR camera, an Arduino microcontroller, and a Raspberry Pi Zero, reducing costs compared to pre-built time-lapse cameras. The units are energetically self-sufficient and resistant to harsh alpine conditions. The system was successfully tested for more than a year to monitor the northwest terminus of the Belvedere Glacier (Italian Alps). Daily stereo-pairs acquired were processed with Structure-from-Motion to derive 3D point clouds of the glacier terminus and estimate glacier retreat and ice volume loss. By combining the information about ice volume loss with ablation estimates and ice flow velocity information, e.g., derived from monoscopic-camera time series, a multi-camera system enables a comprehensive understanding of sub-seasonal glacier dynamics.

Due to its high toxicity and bioaccumulation tendency, tebuconazole (TBZ) is one of the ten substances posing the highest risk of harmful effects in aquatic ecosystems. The liver, a key compartment for xenobiotics detoxification, is also the organ in which TBZ mainly accumulates in fish. Herein, we investigated for the first time the morpho-functional changes induced in zebrafish (Danio rerio) liver after a short-term exposure (48, 96, and 192 hours) to a low, environmentally relevant concentration of TBZ (5 µg/L) to disclose the early effects under a realistic exposure scenario. We revealed that pathological alterations with varying degrees of severity could be detected in all the examined samples. The injuries become intense and irreversible with increased exposure time involving both hepatocytes and vascular components based on the degree of tissue changes. The main morphological alterations were: parenchyma dyschromia, macrophages infiltration, congestion of blood vessels, and sinusoids. TBZ exposure also resulted in a significant decrease in glycogen contents and hepatocyte dimensions, and the modulation of superoxide dismutase, an early indicator of oxidative stress. We demonstrated that even a very low dose of TBZ affects hepatic morphology and function, disrupting liver homeostasis and physiology.

Abstract Introduction The emerging trends of asymmetric and urban warfare call for a revision of the needs and the way in which frontline trauma care is provided to affected population. However, there is no consensus on the process to decide when and how to provide such lifesaving interventions in form of Trauma Stabilization Point (TSP). Methods A three-step Delphi method was used to establish consensus. A focus group discussion was convened to propose a framework and develop the list of twenty-one (21) statements for validation of a group of experts. Results A panel of twenty-eight (28) experts reviewed the statements and participated to both first and second rounds. Comments and recommendations provided by the FGD and during round 1 were used to analyze the findings of the study. The proposed framework includes five main categories identified as interconnected components that facilitate the decision to implement or not the TSP. A total of sixteen (16) elements distributed across the five categories have been considered as being able to guide the decision to utilize such capability in high-risk security and resource constrained settings. Conclusion The TSP has the potential to prevent death and disability. The proposed framework and categories add a structure to the decision-making process and represents an important step to support emergency and trauma care planning and implementation efforts.
