La legislación española actual exige que en los estudios de inundabilidad se delimite la Zona de Flujo Preferente (ZFP), compuesta por envolvente de la Zona de Inundación Peligrosa (ZIP) y la Vía de Intenso Desagüe (VID). La delimitación de la VID es compleja, subjetiva, y no tiene solución única. Habitualmente se determina mediante la restricción de la zona disponible para el flujo, estrechando la zona que ocupa la avenida de 100 años de periodo de retorno, es decir, no permitiendo el flujo en las zonas más alejadas del eje del río. En el presente trabajo se analiza el concepto de VID, y se muestra cómo, en algunos casos, el método anterior no es el mejor, en especial en presencia de zonas de flujo desconectadas o en casos en los que el flujo puede tener una componente transversal importante. Finalmente, se presenta una metodología para la definición de una VID con el mayor sentido físico posible, mediante modelización numérica bidimensional.

El presente trabajo muestra un análisis numérico 3D del comportamiento del flujo de agua en un canal curvo influenciado por la presencia de un vertedero y una compuerta. La simulación numérica se realizó utilizando el software de Dinámica de Fluidos Computacional (CFD) basado en el método de volúmenes finitos (FVM) – OpenFOAM. En el modelo numérico la turbulencia se trata con la metodología RANS (k–ε, k–ω, y RNG k–ε) y se usa el método VOF (Volume of Fluid) para la captura de la superficie libre del agua. Los resultados numéricos obtenidos se evalúan al compararlos con los valores experimentales de calado en diferentes puntos dentro del dominio. Los valores de calado se midieron haciendo uso de sensores de nivel de agua y limnímetros. De esta manera, los resultados numéricos tridimensionales obtenidos son utilizados para analizar las líneas de corriente, las componentes de velocidades y los flujos secundarios.

This study aims at evaluating the performances of flash-flood forecasts issued from deterministic and ensemble meteorological prognostic systems. The hydrometeorological modeling chain includes the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) forcing the rainfall-runoff model MARINE dedicated to flash floods. Two distinct ensemble prediction systems accounting for (i) perturbed initial and lateral boundary conditions of the meteorological state and (ii) mesoscale model physical parameterizations have been implemented on the Agly catchment of the eastern Pyrenees with three subcatchments exhibiting different rainfall regimes. Different evaluations of the performance of the hydrometeorological strategies have been performed: (i) verification of short-range ensemble prediction systems and corresponding streamflow forecasts, for a better understanding of how forecasts behave; (ii) usual measures derived from a contingency table approach, to test an alert threshold exceedance; and (iii) overall evaluation of the hydrometeorological chain using the continuous rank probability score, for a general quantification of the ensemble performances. Results show that the overall discharge forecast is improved by both ensemble strategies with respect to the deterministic forecast. Threshold exceedance detections for flood warning also benefit from large hydrometeorological ensemble spread. There are no substantial differences between both ensemble strategies on these test cases in terms of both the issuance of flood warnings and the overall performances, suggesting that both sources of external-scale uncertainty are important to take into account.

The growing concern about natural hazards, such as snow avalanches, has led to the development of ad hoc numerical models as a support tool for their analysis and evaluation. Existing models for avalanche simulation are based on the conservation of mass and the momentum, which are similar equations to the Saint Venant equations for water with differences only in terms of friction (rheological model). This document shows the possibilities of these equations to simulate dense-slab avalanches and the numerical treatment carried out in Iber. A new methodology has been used to balance the source term and the flow vector to avoid spurious oscillations and unreal movements, modifying the bottom slope based on the fluid parameters and thus stop its movement. The tool has been tested in two case studies to analyse the behaviour of the fluid depending on the parameters of the rheological model.

This paper presents a 3D numerical analysis of flow field patterns in a dam break laboratory scale by applying the numerical code based on Finite Volume Method (FVM), OpenFOAM. In the numerical model the turbulence is treated with RANS methodology and the VOF (Volume of Fluid) method is used to capture the free surface of the water. The numerical results of the code are assessed against experimental data. Water depth and pressure measures are used to validate the numerical model. The results demonstrate that the 3D numerical code satisfactorily reproduce the temporal variation of these variables.

The numerical results are assessed against published experimental data. Water depth and pressure measures are used to validate the numerical model. The results demonstrate that the 3D numerical configuration satisfactorily reproduces the temporal variation of these variables with correct trends and high correlation with the experimental values.

La problemática asociada al crecimiento masivo de macrófitos en el Bajo Ebro ha llevado a autoridades y gestores a examinar la posibilidad de paliar los efectos negativos que producen sobre el sistema hídrico, y los usos del agua, mediante la realización de avenidas controladas periódicas que provoquen su remoción. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo principal evaluar el comportamiento hidráulico de los macrófitos mediante simulación numérica (modelo Iber) y su comparación con datos de campo, con el fin de explorar las mejores opciones posibles para diseñar avenidas controladas más eficaces. Para ello se han empleado diferentes relaciones entre el coeficiente de rugosidad y la altura de agua bajo tres enfoques distintos (constante, variable y variable con histéresis) a fin de calibrar el modelo numérico con los datos de campo. Se ha podido observar que el mejor ajuste se produce cuando dichas curvas son de tipo variable con histéresis (diferente rama de subida que de bajada).

In terms of flood hazard, the presence of large wood (logs, trees, branches and roots) in rivers may aggravate the consequences of flood events. This material may affect infrastructures such as bridges, weirs, etc., especially those intersecting forested mountain rivers. Until recently, a widely accepted practice was to systematically remove wood debris from river channels as a preventive measure. However, studies have shown that this practice may be useless as the material is transported and deposited after each flood and may even not benefit the long term natural balance of the river ecosystem. Therefore, the presence of this woody material in rivers must be managed and included in flood hazard and risk analysis. In this paper we present a comprehensive methodological approach to study the role of large wood in rivers, with a focus on flood hazard. First, to understand the dynamics of wood recruitment, the contributing areas delivering wood to the streams have to be delineated and the recruitment mechanisms studied. Thus, an estimate can be obtained of the potential volume of deliverable wood. To analyse wood transport we present a numerical model, which allows simulates the behaviour of individual pieces of wood together with hydrodynamics. Finally, we analyse the impact of wood on the magnitude of flood events (in terms of water level, flow velocity or flooded areas), using as an example a flood which occurred in December 1997 in the Sierra de Gredos. The results allowed us to reproduce the wood deposit patterns during the event and to reconstruct the bridge blockage. This caused the upstream water level to rise by up to 2 meters and reduced the flow velocity, which favoured debris and sediment deposits. Consequently, the effects of flooding were equivalent to those of a greater magnitude event. This increase in the flood hazard has been numerically quantified.

Sulfate and nitrate aerosols degrade air quality, modulate radiative forcing and the hydrological cycle, and affect biogeochemical cycles, yet their global cycles are poorly understood. Here, we examined trends in 21 years of aerosol measurements made at Ragged Point, Barbados, the easternmost promontory on the island located in the eastern Caribbean Basin. Though the site has historically been used to characterize African dust transport, here we focused on changes in nitrate and non-sea-salt (nss) sulfate aerosols from 1990–2011. Nitrate aerosol concentrations averaged over the entire period were stable at 0.59 µg m−3 ± 0.04 µg m−3, except for elevated nitrate concentrations in the spring of 2010 and during the summer and fall of 2008 due to the transport of biomass burning emissions from both northern and southern Africa to our site. In contrast, from 1990 to 2000, nss-sulfate decreased 30 % at a rate of 0.023 µg m−3 yr−1, a trend which we attribute to air quality policies enacted in the United States (US) and Europe. From 2000–2011, sulfate gradually increased at a rate of 0.021 µg m−3 yr−1 to pre-1990s levels of 0.90 µg m−3. We used the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model simulations from the EPA's Air QUAlity TimE Series (EQUATES) to better understand the changes in nss-sulfate after 2000. The model simulations estimate that increases in anthropogenic emissions from Africa explain the increase in nss-sulfate observed in Barbados. Our results highlight the need to better constrain emissions from developing countries and to assess their impact on aerosol burdens in remote source regions.

The number concentration and properties of aerosol particles serving as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) are important for understanding cloud properties, including in the tropical Atlantic marine boundary layer (MBL), where marine cumulus clouds reflect incoming solar radiation and obscure the low-albedo ocean surface. Studies linking aerosol source, composition, and water uptake properties in this region have been conducted primarily during the summertime dust transport season, despite the region receiving a variety of aerosol particle types throughout the year. In this study, we compare size-resolved aerosol chemical composition data to the hygroscopicity parameter κ derived from size-resolved CCN measurements made during the Elucidating the Role of Clouds–Circulation Coupling in Climate (EUREC4A) and Atlantic Tradewind Ocean-Atmosphere Mesoscale Interaction Campaign (ATOMIC) campaigns from January to February 2020. We observed unexpected periods of wintertime long-range transport of African smoke and dust to Barbados. During these periods, the accumulation-mode aerosol particle and CCN number concentrations as well as the proportions of dust and smoke particles increased, whereas the average κ slightly decreased (κ=0.46±0.10) from marine background conditions (κ=0.52±0.09) when the submicron particles were mostly composed of marine organics and sulfate. Size-resolved chemical analysis shows that smoke particles were the major contributor to the accumulation mode during long-range transport events, indicating that smoke is mainly responsible for the observed increase in CCN number concentrations. Earlier studies conducted at Barbados have mostly focused on the role of dust on CCN, but our results show that aerosol hygroscopicity and CCN number concentrations during wintertime long-range transport events over the tropical North Atlantic are also affected by African smoke. Our findings highlight the importance of African smoke for atmospheric processes and cloud formation over the Caribbean.

African mineral dust is transported many thousands of kilometres from its source regions, and, because of its ability to nucleate ice, it plays a major role in cloud glaciation around the globe. The ice-nucleating activity of desert dust is influenced by its mineralogy, which varies substantially between source regions and across particle sizes. However, in models it is often assumed that the activity (expressed as active sites per unit surface area as a function of temperature) of atmospheric mineral dust is the same everywhere on the globe. Here, we find that the ice-nucleating activity of African desert dust sampled in the summertime marine boundary layer of Barbados (July and August 2017) is substantially lower than parameterizations based on soil from specific locations in the Sahara or dust sedimented from dust storms. We conclude that the activity of dust in Barbados' boundary layer is primarily defined by the low K-feldspar content of the dust, which is around 1 %. We propose that the dust we sampled in the Caribbean was from a region in western Africa (in and around the Sahel in Mauritania and Mali), which has a much lower feldspar content than other African sources across the Sahara and Sahel.

The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. From January 1970 to December 2018, 1304 patients were diagnosed with multiple myeloma (MM) at our institution and 256 (19.6%) had plasmacytomas (Ps) (paraskeletal -PPs- 17.6%, extramedullary -EMPs-1.9%). Patients with Ps had lower serum M-protein and less advanced ISS stage than those without. At first relapse, 192 out of 967 patients (19.8%) developed Ps (PPs 14.6%, EMPs 5.1%). The only factor associated with Ps at relapse was the presence of Ps at diagnosis (46% vs 13%, p < 0.00001) with no impact with exposure to novel drugs or previous autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT). The median overall survival (OS) was 45, 44 and 20 months for patients without Ps, PPs and EMPs, respectively (p = 0.013). Patients with PPs who underwent ASCT had similar OS than those without Ps (98 vs. 113 months) and significantly longer than those with EMPs (98 vs 47 months, p = 0.006). In patients non-eligible for ASCT the presence of PPs or EMPs was associated with shorter OS compared with patients without Ps (32 vs. 24 vs. 6 months, p = 0.009). In the relapsed setting, a significant survival benefit was observed beyond the year 2000, but still with significant differences among patients without Ps, PPs and EMPs (37 vs 22 vs 16 months, p = 0.003). Importantly, rescue therapy with combinations of proteasome-inhibitors plus immunomodulatory drugs was associated with prolonged OS from first relapse (over 6 years), even in patients with EMPs., (© 2022. Upstream from a dam reservoir, river hydrodynamics may be directly changed by temporary inundation driven by the reservoir. This triggers morphological river changes which may additionally modify the initial hydrodynamics, even at the time when backwater inundation does not occur (indirect effects of backwater). We verified these hypotheses, applying two-dimensional hydraulic modelling of flood flows to a section of the mountainous Dunajec River upstream from the Czorsztyn Reservoir. The modelling was performed for small, medium and large floods, and hydraulic conditions were compared between the scenarios with lacking and maximum backwater inundation and between the river reaches subjected to backwater inundation and unaffected by backwater fluctuations. Direct effects of reservoir level fluctuations were limited to the reach subjected to backwater inundation during floods and comprised: significantly increased water depth and decreased flow velocity and bed shear stress in the channel and on the floodplain, as well as a re-established hydrological connectivity between the channel and floodplain during small and medium floods. Indirect effects of backwater inundation reflected channel widening and bed aggradation that triggered a positive feedback with changes in hydrodynamics, mostly by reducing the velocity of flood flows in the channel zone. These latter changes occurred on a longer distance upstream from the reservoir than the backwater reach itself, and they modified the river hydrodynamics even when backwater inundation did not occur. We propose a conceptual model which indicates that changes of mountain rivers upstream from dam reservoirs are driven by modified hydrodynamics and lead to different morphological adjustments than those induced by waters underloaded with sediment downstream from dams. Wastewater from a potash mine in the central region of Catalonia is transported by means of a collector that runs more than 100 km, spilling into the sea on the Catalan central coast. To analyze the hydraulics of this infrastructure, the values of the basic parameters that condition the flow, such as the absolute roughness of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) pipes and the viscosity of the transported brine mixtures, must be characterized. There exists uncertainty about the value of absolute roughness of a PVC pipe as described in the literature; nevertheless, if the pipe is smooth, the influence of the absolute roughness in the hydraulic determination of viscosity will not be significant. In this work, an experimental procedure based on a hydraulic analysis was applied to estimate the kinematic viscosity of a brine mixture, depending on its temperature and concentrations of salts and fines.
