The Student Dust Counter (SDC) is an in-situ dust detector aboard the New Horizons spacecraft observing the distribution of interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) with mass > 10 − 12 g or approximately 0.5 µm in radius. New Horizons was launched on January 19th, 2006 and performed a fly-by of the Pluto system on July 14th, 2015. SDC has nearly continuously mapped the dust density distribution along the trajectory of New Horizons, and it continues to operate providing measurements of the IDP in the Edgeworth–Kuiper Belt (EKB). We present results of the dust density distribution from 1 to 38 AU and compare these measurements to existing theoretical models.

Examining Arrokoth The New Horizons spacecraft flew past the Kuiper Belt object (486958) Arrokoth (also known as 2014 MU 69 ) in January 2019. Because of the great distance to the outer Solar System and limited bandwidth, it will take until late 2020 to downlink all the spacecraft's observations back to Earth. Three papers in this issue analyze recently downlinked data, including the highest-resolution images taken during the encounter (see the Perspective by Jewitt). Spencer et al. examined Arrokoth's geology and geophysics using stereo imaging, dated the surface using impact craters, and produced a geomorphological map. Grundy et al. investigated the composition of the surface using color imaging and spectroscopic data and assessed Arrokoth's thermal emission using microwave radiometry. McKinnon et al. used simulations to determine how Arrokoth formed: Two gravitationally bound objects gently spiraled together during the formation of the Solar System. Together, these papers determine the age, composition, and formation process of the most pristine object yet visited by a spacecraft. Our understanding of the lunar dust exosphere is based on NASA’s Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer. Its findings provide a unique opportunity to map the composition of the lunar surface from orbit and identify regions that are rich in volatiles, providing opportunities for future in situ resource utilization (ISRU), which is a key element in establishing human habitats on the Moon. The expected availability of water ice, and other volatiles, in Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSR) makes the lunar poles of prime interest. However, the relative strength of the various sources, sinks, and transport mechanisms of water into and out of PSRs remain largely unknown. The quantitative characterization of the temporal and spatial variability of the influx of IDPs to the polar regions of the Moon is critical to the understanding the evolution of volatiles in PSRs. A dust instrument onboard a polar orbiting lunar spacecraft could make fundamental measurements to assess the availability and accessibility of water ice in PSRs. Water is thought to be continually delivered to the Moon through geological timescales by water-bearing comets and asteroids and produced continuously in situ by the impacts of solar wind protons of oxygen-rich minerals on the surface. IDPs are an unlikely source of water due to their long UV exposure in the inner solar system, but their high-speed impacts can mobilize secondary ejecta dust particles, atoms and molecules, some with high-enough speed to escape the Moon. Other surface processes that can lead to mobilization, transport and loss of water molecules and other volatiles include solar heating, photochemical processes, and solar wind sputtering. Since the efficiency of these are reduced in PSRs, dust impacts remain the dominant process to dictate the evolution of volatiles in PSRs.The continually present dust ejecta cloud was observed by LADEE/LDEX. A more capable dust instrument, in addition to the size and speed of an impacting particle, can also measure the composition of secondary ejecta particles, resulting in a surface composition map with a spatial resolution comparable to the height of the spacecraft.This talk will describe the available instrumentation, its testing and calibration using the SSERVI /IMPACT dust accelerator facility at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and conclude with the recognition that a polar-orbiting spacecraft could directly sample lunar ejecta, providing the critical link between IDP bombardment and the evolution of water ice in PSRs.

The Kuiper Belt is a distant region of the Solar System. On 1 January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew close to (486958) 2014 MU69, a Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Object, a class of objects that have never been heated by the Sun and are therefore well preserved since their formation. Here we describe initial results from these encounter observations. MU69 is a bi-lobed contact binary with a flattened shape, discrete geological units, and noticeable albedo heterogeneity. However, there is little surface color and compositional heterogeneity. No evidence for satellites, ring or dust structures, gas coma, or solar wind interactions was detected. The Lunar Dust Experiment (LDEX) on board the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) mission orbited the Moon from 2014 September to 2015 April and observed a dynamic, permanently present dust cloud produced by continual meteoroid bombardment. For the latitudes observed by LDEX, the sporadic background contribution to the impacting dust flux is dominated by helion (HE), apex (AP), and antihelion (AH) sources oscillating with lunar phase. Using improved impact ejecta distributions, a three-dimensional model was implemented to estimate the inner and outer ejecta cone angles from LDEX plume measurements. Expanding upon this single-plume model and the derived ejecta cone angles, we implemented a global lunar model fitted to LDEX measurements of the sporadic background to constrain the product of meteoroid impactor fluxes and ejecta mass yield per source. We use the observed asymmetry between sunward and antisunward impactor fluxes to discuss the possible contributions of β-meteoroids, in addition to the HE and AH sporadic meteoroid sources. We find that if β-meteoroids are responsible for the day/night asymmetry, they must have an impact ejecta yield of at least 103.

We augment the heliospheric network of galactic cosmic ray (GCR) monitors using 2012–2017 penetrating radiation measurements from the New Horizons (NH) Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer Science Investigation (PEPSSI), obtaining intensities of ≳75 MeV particles. The new, predominantly GCR observations provide critical links between the Sun and Voyager 2 and Voyager 1 (V2 and V1), in the heliosheath and local interstellar medium (LISM), respectively. We provide NH, Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), V2, and V1 GCR observations, using them to track solar cycle variations and short-term Forbush decreases from the Sun to the LISM, and to examine the interaction that results in the surprising, previously reported V1 LISM anisotropy episodes. To investigate these episodes and the hitherto unexplained lagging of associated in situ shock features at V1, propagating disturbances seen at ACE, NH, and V2 were compared to V1. We conclude that the region where LISM magnetic field lines drape around the heliopause is likely critical for communicating solar disturbance signals upstream of the heliosheath to V1. We propose that the anisotropy-causing physical process that suppresses intensities at ∼90° pitch angles relies on GCRs escaping from a single compression in the draping region, not on GCRs trapped between two compressions. We also show that NH suprathermal and energetic particle data from PEPSSI are consistent with the interpretation that traveling shocks and corotating interaction region (CIR) remnants can be distinguished by the existence or lack of Forbush decreases, respectively, because turbulent magnetic fields at local shocks inhibit GCR transport while older CIR structures reaching the outer heliosphere do not.

Water retention characteristics are fundamental input parameters in any modeling study on water flow and solute transport. These properties are difficult to measure and for that reason, we usually need to use direct and indirect methods to determine them. An extensive comparison between measured and estimated results is needed to determine their applicability for a range of different soils. However this study attempts to make a contribution specifically in this connection. These properties were determined in two representative sites located in Landriano field, in Lombardy region, northern Italy. In the laboratory we used the pressure plate apparatus and the tensiometric box. Field soil water retention was determined including measurements of soil water content with SENTEK probes and matric potential with tensiometers. The soil waer retention curves (SWRC) were also settled on with some recently developed pedo-transfert functions (PTFs). Field retention curves were compared against those obtained from PTFs estimations and laboratory measurements. The comparison showed that laboratory measurements were the most accurate. They had the highest ranking for the validation indices (RMSE ranging between 2.4% and 7.7% and bias between 0.1% and 6.4%). The second best technique was the PTF Rosetta (Schaap et al. 2001). They perform only slightly poorer than the laboratory measurements (RMSE ranging between 2.7% and 10% and bias between 0.3% and 7.7%). The lowest prediction accuracy is observed for the Rawls and Brakensiek (1985) PTF (RMSE ranging between 6.3% and 17% and bias between 5% and 10%) which is in contradiction with previous finding (Calzolari et al., 2001), showing that this function is well representing the retention characteristics of the area. Due to time and cost investments of laboratory and field measurements, we conclude that the Rosetta PTF developed by Schaap et al. (2001) appears to be the best to predict the soil moisture retention curve from easily available soil properties in the Lombardy area and further field investigations would be useful to support this finding.

The development of tools for evaluating the sustainability of cropping systems is fundamental to providing reliable information on crop performance. In this study, an integrated index [Performance Index (PI)] was developed based on environmental, production and cost variables. In this approach, data are aggregated using a fuzzy logic-based procedure to deal with the inherent subjectivity at each aggregation step. The PI was tested for three cropping systems in the Po Valley (northern Italy) where maize was grown using minimum tillage, sod seeding and conventional tillage. The methodology proved to be effective for evaluating the three systems. In contrast to other methods for evaluating cropping systems such as those based on agro-ecological indicators (AEIs), direct aggregation of measured variables reduces the risk of losing information because the level of abstraction in the mathematical formalization of AEIs is usually higher. This advantage is counterbalanced by an increase in the data needed for the evaluation process. The use of domain experts and the mathematical management of subjective decisions should encourage the use of the methodology in other regions and cropping systems.

Aicardi syndrome (AS) is a rare disorder which includes the triad of total or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum, infantile spasms, and chorioretinal anomalies. Seizures and electroencephalogram findings observed in AS are polymorphic with both focal and generalized seizures. We first report on a patient affected by AS who presented with reflex audiogenic seizures specifically triggered by the starting tune of a popular television news. No other type of stimuli, either simple or complex, were able to precipitate the seizures in the patient. The severe cortical-subcortical lesions commonly observed in AS are associated with hyperexcitability of the cortices and may well account for the broad electroclinical patterns noted in this group of patients. From our report, the context of these patterns should be extended to include reflex audiogenic seizures.

Irrigation management at district or regional scale can be dealt using ecological process-based models and remote sensing data. Simulation crop models simulate at a certain time step the main biophysical variables determining crop photosynthesis and water consumption rates. The research consists in an integrated approach to combine field data, simulation crop model and remote sensing information. Detailed data sets related to topography, soil, climate and land cover were collected and organized into a Geographic Information System, which is routinely updated with remotely sensed images. The code implementation of these two models allows for an improvement of simulation reliability for the crop types considered in the present study in Mediterranean area. Remote sensing images detected by optical and radar satellite sensors at different spatial scales (from 10 to 50 m) have been collected over the analyzed crop cycles. Therefore, remote sensing information about land use and leaf area index (LAI) are assimilated dynamically by the model, to increase the effectiveness of simulation. The integration of crop and water dynamics models with the updated remote sensing information is a Decision Support Systems, AQUATER software, able to integrate remote sensing images, to estimate crop and soil variables related to drought, and subsequently to assimilate these variables into a simulation model at district scale. The significant final outputs are estimated values of evapotranspiration, plant water status and drought indicators. The present work describes the structure of AQUATER software and reports some application results over 2006 and 2007 cropping seasons in Capitanata, South-East Italy. This region has been divided in simulation units cropped by tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum L.), sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. var. saccharifera) and durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.). Two types of comparison have been carried out: (i) between some tomato observed and simulated data, and (ii) between “LAI Forcing” and “No LAI Forcing” simulated data. LAI Forcing data have been detected by remote sensing over the crop cycle and over the whole region. The model showed a relevant coherence between observed and simulated data (RRMSE = 32, 55, 30% for above ground biomass, LAI and soil water content, respectively). In the case of the application of the LAI Forcing procedure, since simulated LAI are lower than the observed values, as a consequence, simulation results underestimate.

Third generation mobile networks rely on an architecture where a certain number of operation and maintenance centers handle a large amount of information about the network behavior. In this scenario, the amount of traffic-related data may become so large that even straightforward processing tasks, such as off-line querying, become a serious challenge. In this paper we show how, by integrating different techniques for database performance improvement, we may efficiently compress databases containing hundreds of gigabytes of mobile network traffic data. Our application relies on a wavelet-based synopsis technique that strongly reduces database size and allows fast database access, while preserving query syntax and semantic, at the price of a bounded information loss. Our solution has been tested on data coming from the Chinese and Italian mobile networks.

SummaryStudies of the efficacy of topiramate (TPM) in infants and young children are few. Here we report an open, prospective, and pragmatic study of effectiveness of TPM in terms of epilepsy syndromes, in children aged less than 2 years. The median follow-up period was 11 months. We enrolled 59 children in the study: 22 affected by localization-related epilepsy (LRE), 23 by generalized epilepsy, six by Dravet's syndrome, and eight with unclassifiable epilepsy. TPM was effective (responders showed a decrease of more than 50% in seizure frequency) in 47% of patients, including 13% who were seizure-free at the last visit. TPM was more effective in localization-related epilepsy (48% of responders) than in generalized epilepsy (32% of responders). In the latter group, 19 patients suffered from infantile spasms. Four of six patients with cryptogenic infantile spasms became seizure-free. Of the 13 patients with symptomatic infantile spasms, only one was seizure-free. Results were poor for patients with Dravet's syndrome. In general, TPM was well tolerated. The most frequently reported adverse effects were drowsiness, irritability, hyperthermia, and anorexia.The present study concludes that TPM is effective for a broad range of seizures in infants and young children and represents a valid therapeutic option in this population.

The potential effects of future climate change on grain production of a winter durum wheat cropping system were investigated. Based on future climate change projections, derived from a statistical downscaling process applied to the HadCM3 general circulation model and referred to two IPCC scenarios (A2 and B1), the response on yield and aboveground biomass (AGB) and the variation in total organic carbon (TOC) were explored. The software used in this work is an hybrid dynamic simulation model able to simulate, under different pedoclimatic conditions, the processes involved in cropping system such as crop growth and development, water and nitrogen balance. It implements different approaches in order to ensure accurate simulation of the mainprocess related to soil-crop-atmosphere continuum.The model was calibrated using soil data, crop yield, AGB and phenology coming from a long-term experiment, located in Apulia region. The calibration was performed using data collected in the period 1978–1990; validation was carried out on the 1991–2009 data. Phenology simulation was sufficiently accurate, showing some limitation only in predicting the physiological maturity. Yields and AGBs were predicted with an acceptable accuracy during both calibration and validation. CRM resulted always close to optimum value, EF in every case scored positive value, the value of index r2 was good, although in some cases values lower than 0.6 were calculated. Slope of the linear regression equation between measured and simulated values was always close to 1, indicating an overall good performance of the model. Both future climate scenarios led to a general increase in yields but a slightly decrease in AGB values. Data showed variations in the total production and yield among the different periods due to the climate variation. TOC evolution suggests that the combination of temperature and precipitation is the main factor affecting TOC variation under future scenarios. Incorporation of crop residues had a positive effect, in the first 35 cm the amount of carbon increase with both the future scenarios.
