Abstract In species where conflict is costly, individuals adopt alternative movement tactics to minimise the risk of competitive interactions. Dominant males often maintain defined territories, while less competitive males may be forced to adopt alternative tactics to maximise fitness and reduce conflict. However, the extent to which males switch tactics according to current social or physiological status is poorly understood. Using implanted acoustic tags and a fixed array of tracking receivers, we investigated how the behaviour of 78 male estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) shifted over an 11-year period in relation to ontogeny, body condition, and the extent of physical injuries. We discovered that male crocodiles sorted into three common movement classes, with 51% of males maintaining the same movement class across consecutive years (max = 9 years). Males > 4 m in total length maintained confined territories both within and across years and had the greatest extent of injuries and the highest condition score, indicative of territory holders. In contrast, smaller males sorted into high movement roamer or low movement site-philopatric tactics, where the tactic an individual adopted was less stable between years and did not correlate with condition or external injuries. Our study reveals the socio-biological mechanisms by which estuarine crocodiles coexist within a restricted habitat. Significance statement Identifying individual-level differences in movement helps us predict which individuals are more likely to be involved in human-wildlife interactions. However, studying long-term shifts in movement is challenging, as large datasets of co-occurring individuals tracked in their natural environment over multiple years are required. We tracked a population of 78 male estuarine crocodiles (1030–4687 mm total length) in a shared environment over 11 years and assessed how eight movement traits were linked to body size and physical condition. At the population level, males sorted into different movement tactics according to ontogeny, with large territorial males having better body condition yet a greater incidence of injury. However, 49% of males showed variability across years, suggesting that tactics were conditional relative to environmental variability and a male’s own status. Our study provides insights into the mechanisms and costs of movement tactics in wild crocodile populations.

The ever increasing threat from new and emerging plant pests and pathogens poses a significant threat to plant health on a global scale. Once an organism is introduced and establishes itself in a new region, it is incredibly costly, both in terms of environmental impact and economic loss, to manage it. In most cases, eradication and containment programmes are most effective when the organism is identified early on. Further to this, the most cost effective management of all is preventing introduction in the first place. Therefore, the role for early warning systems in plant health is becoming more evident. Botanic gardens and arboreta are unique resources that can help provide such early warning and are, currently, often overlooked within plant health. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of ED and its health-related correlates in a nonselected population from a Mediterranean country. The abridged 5-item version of the international index of erectile function (IIEF-5) was used as a diagnostic tool. A total of 905 men aged 18 years and above from Jordan were included in the study and answered the questions about medical history, lifestyle habits and sexual behavior. A logistic regression model was used to identify significant independent risk factors for ED. In this sample the prevalence of all degrees of ED was estimated as 49.9%. In this group of men, the degree was mild in 25%, moderate in 13.5% and severe in 11.4%. The prevalence of severe ED increased from 2.7% in men in their twenties to 38.6% in their sixties and 46% in those aged 70 years and above. Age is the single most significant risk factor. Other important risk factors include lower household income, physical inactivity, obesity, smoking, diabetes mellitus hypertension and ischemic heart disease. This study provides a quantitative estimate of the prevalence and the main risk factors for ED in our region. This condition, which represents a source of distress, should be evaluated more effectively by rigorous and standardized methods, particularly as effective treatments are now available.

Wound strength in the rectus muscle of rabbits is greater at any measured time interval when sutured with polyglycolic acid than when sutured with chromic catgut. This is true for both irradiated and nonirradiated tissues. No significant advantage is seen for either suture in nonirradiated bladder, although the trend favors polyglycolic acid. In irradiated bladders, a significant advantage is seen for polyglycolic acid at 15 days. In measuring repaired ureteral orifice size, only chronic catgut suture in nonirradiated rabbits caused marked edema and unreteral obstruction. Postoperative ureteral dilation with both materials resolved over a 90 day period. In the irradiated ureter, however, resolution of this obstruction appears to occur earlier and more dependably when polyglycolic acid suture has been used. Polyglycolic acid showed a trend for superior strength in urothelial wounds tested. The healing of bladder epithelium is usually completed in ten to 14 days. The entire bladder wound gains strength rapidly until day 21 and gains little strength thereafter. A suture material that does not increase the inflammatory response but lasts long enough for complete bladder healing is advisable. Using the criterion of wound breaking strength in our experimental work, polyglycolic acid was shown to be superior to chromic catgut suture material.

In an attempt to formulate indications for mediastinoscopy, the histologic tumor type and the radiographic manifestations of the tumor were correlated with the occurrence of mediastinal node metastases in 121 patients who had potentially resectable bronchogenic carcinoma. Our results demonstrated that mediastinal metastases occur commonly in patients with central lesions irrespective of cell type, but that the histologic tumor type has a definite influence on the frequency of mediastinal involvement in patients with parenchymal masses or peripheral lesions. Our results also demonstrated that the absence of radiographic evidence of mediastinal involvement cannot be given strong consideration when selecting patients for mediastinoscopy, because almost 50 per cent of patients with mediastinal involvement did not have mediastinal widening on the chest roentgenogram. Our results, in conjunction with currently accepted principles governing the management of patients with bronchogenic carcinoma, have allowed us to propose a logical approach for the use of mediastinoscopy in the prethoracotomy evaluation of patients with potentially resectable lung cancer.

Effective communication hinges on a mutual understanding of word meaning in different contexts. The embedding space learned by large language models can serve as an explicit model of the shared, context-rich meaning space humans use to communicate their thoughts. We recorded brain activity using electrocorticography during spontaneous, face-to-face conversations in five pairs of epilepsy patients. We demonstrate that the linguistic embedding space can capture the linguistic content of word-by-word neural alignment between speaker and listener. Linguistic content emerged in the speaker's brain before word articulation, and the same linguistic content rapidly reemerged in the listener's brain after word articulation.
