BACKGROUND In systemic amyloidosis cardiac infiltration by amyloid fibrils leads to increased stiffness of the myocardium and of the atrial walls. There is a reduction in left atrial mechanical function and a high risk of thrombi formation. Atrial deformation by speckle tracking echocardiography peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS) can predict the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and ischaemic stroke in the general population and in patients (pts) with cryptogenic stroke. The predictive value of PALS seems to differ in different pts populations according to the prevalence of ventricular versus atrial myopathy (1). PURPOSE to compare parameters of atrial function in cardiac amyloidosis pts in sinus rhythm (SR) and AF and to observe if they are associated with the occurrence of new onset AF at follow-up (FUP). METHODS between 2016-2021 all pts with diagnosis of cardiac aTTR amyloidosis referred to the Clinic underwent an echocardiographic study including 2D-speckle tracking evaluation of left ventricular and left and right atrial strain. All pts received a regular FUP (clinical, echo, ECG and 24 hours Holter monitoring). Atrial function was evaluated by PALS in all pts and by PALS and PACS (peak atrial longitudinal strain during atrial contraction phase) in pts in SR. RESULTS 47 pts with aTTR cardiac amyloid (39/47 wild-tipe) were studied. Mean age = 82 ± 5 years, LV mass = 190 ± 46 g/m2; LV EF= 53%±9, GLS= -10%±4, EF/GLS ratio=-5,5 ± 2, left atrial (LA) volume = 49 ± 9 ml/m2, LA PALS 9,7%±6,6, right atrial (RA) PALS 15,9 ± 9,6. At the time of diagnosis 29 pts were in SR and 18 pts were in AF. Pts in AF had lower PALS (5,1%±3,7 in AF pts vs 11,9%±6,9 in SR pts, p = 0,001) and lower (less negative) GLS (-9,1%±3,1 in AF pts vs -11,8%± 4,2 in SR pts, p = 0,02). LA volume was not significantly different in AF pts compare to SR pts (51,4 ml/m2 ± 7,65 vs 47,6 ml/m2 ± 10,9; p = 0,19). During a median FUP of 21 months 8 pts had a new onset AF. There was no significant difference in atrial size and atrial deformation parameters between pts who had new onset AF at FUP compared to pts who did not (Tab 1). The only parameter associated with new onset AF at FUP was GLS (-8.21%± 2,8 vs -13.01%±4,02, CI -10.8—5.6 vs -14.8—11.18, respectively, in pts who developed new onset AF compared to pts who did not, p = 0.007). 5 pts had a cardioembolic stroke at FUP: at the time of the admission for stroke they were all in AF. CONCLUSIONS Our data show that in this group of pts with aTTR cardiac amyloidosis all echo parameters of LA size and function were overall impaired. In this setting of advanced disease LA volume was not significantly different in pts in AF compared to pts in SR and was not associated with new-onset AF at FUP. Deformation parameters were significantly more impaired in pts in AF compared to pts in SR, however PALS was not associated with the occurrence of new onset AF at follow-up. The canine adenovirus type 2 (CAdV-2) is associated with the infectious tracheobronchitis commonly called “kennel cough”, cosmopolitan in dogs but little explored in gray wolves. Our goals were (i) to evaluate the presence and circulation of CAdV-2 in free-ranging Italian wolves (Canis lupus italicus), through the analysis of spleens and tongues collected from 56 carcasses sampled in three Italian regions between August 2017 and July 2020, and (ii) to support the validity of a matrix such as the tongue, which was never used before. Samples were screened for the presence of CAdV-2 DNA using both PCR and real-time PCR assay. Positive results were related to sampling year, location, sex, age, genetic determination of species, and matrices tested. Three male wolves (5.4%) tested positive in tongue samples, demonstrating that the tongue is an excellent matrix for the detection of CAdV-2. To the best of our knowledge, no studies were performed to evaluate the usability of tongue samples to detect CAdV-2 DNA in grey wolves or other wild animals. The number of wolves tested positive suggests that, during the studied years, the circulation of CAdV-2 in Italian wolves showed a low frequency, consistent with irregular introductions of the virus by dogs or other wild carnivores in these populations. This preliminary study provides new data on the ecology of CAdV-2 in Italian wolves, although future studies are needed to fully understand its real circulation at a national scale, its pathogenetic role in gray wolves, and its risk of transmission to other wild carnivores.

Aim: To identify, in vitro, the best fruit juice to use as oral contrast agent in magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and to test, in vivo, the best natural juice and the new parameters in MRCP sequences identified in vitro. Materials and methods: The in vitro evaluations consisted of measuring the T2 values of a pure solution of manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) at different concentrations, measuring the content of Mn and Fe in five commercial juices and their T2 relaxation times, and identifying the optimal juice dilution for suppressing the gastrointestinal fluid signal. The new parameters of MRCP sequences were tested in vivo. Results: Manganese alone strongly influenced the shortening of the T2 values (p=0.004). The T2 value with an echo time (TE) of ≥1,000 ms enabled sufficient intestinal fluid suppression in the case of high juice dilution. BackgroundTemporal arteritis is the most common systemic vasculitis in patients aged >50 years, the most serious complications of which is visual loss. The arterial biopsy is the diagnostic gold standard; alongside the classic finding of transmural infiltrate and giant cells, other abnormalities have been described, of which it is not yet known whether they identify specific clinical subsets. PET is not yet used for diagnosis, but it can be suggestive in patients with high clinical suspect; it may be useful for assessing the extention of the disease in already diagnosed patients and for ruling out alternative diagnoses as infections and neoplasms. More recently, PET has been used to assess disease metabolic activityObjectivesThe aim of our study is to evaluate, in patients with histologically confirmed temporal arteritis, correlations between pathological subsets, metabolic activity and different clinical behavior.MethodsWe have recovered the medical records of patients with the diagnosis of temporal arteritis made in our Rheumatology service from January 2007 until now. We selected those satisfying the ACR 1990 criteria and, finally, those with a positive biopsy. We analyzed age at onset of symptoms, diagnostic delay, presence of PMR, fever, constitutional symptoms, headache, temporal artery induration, visual loss; we analyzed CRP, ESR, plasmatic Hb, PLT count, hypocomplementemia, ANA, aCL, ANCA. The referring pathologist, who didn’t know the history of patients, re-examined all the biopsies performed, focusing on: transmural, periadventitial, limited to small vessels or vasa vasorum infiltrate, presence of giant cells, macrophages, eosinophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes, plasmacells, stenosis, thrombosis, fibrinoid necrosis. The nuclear doctor retrieved the PET images by re-assigning each patient the relative PET VAS score. Descriptive analysis was performed: absolute and percentage frequencies were calculated for categorical variables and mean, standard deviation, range and percentiles for quantitative variables. The relationship between variables was tested by the chi-square test and the Mann-Whitney rank test. All analyzes were performed with the STATA software 14.2.ResultsWe analyzed 46 patients (F 32, M 14), average age at onset of symptoms of 75.5 yrs and average diagnostic delay of 3.2 months. Headache was reported by 37 patients, fever and asthenia by 26 and 24 respectively, jaw claudication and PMR by 18 and 7. 11 patients had visual loss while 4 and 2 respectively reported amaurosis and diplopia. Temporal artery induration was described in 24 patients. Tests of systemic inflammation were abnormal (mean CRP 85 mg/L, ESR 72.7 mm /1h); the finding of hypocomplementemia (1/26 patients), ANA, aCL and ANCA positivity (2/31, 1/27 and 1/25) was negligible. Histological analysis showed the prevalence of transmural infiltrate (100% of patients), giant cells (87%) and lymphocytes/macrophages (85% both); small vessel vasculitis (59%) and the presence of plasma cells (53%), neutrophils (48%) and eosinophils (22%) were less represented. Periadventitial infiltrate was described in 29% of patients, with negligibility of vasculitis limited to the adventitia and of the vasa vasorum (2 and 0/46). Intimal hyperplasia and necrosis (22 and 14/46) prevailed over calcifications, stenosis and thrombosis (7-5-1/46). PET was available in 14 patients including 6 positive (43%), with a median PET VAS score of 7 (range 6-21); 8/13 patients had not taken steroids prior to PET.ConclusionIn our retrospective study we observed, in addition to transmural infiltrate and giant cells, the presence of lymphocytes, macrophages and small vessel vasculitis. No correlation was observed between clinical findings, biological and metabolic activity, apart from the increased presence of giant cells in PET positive patients. Visual loss is slightly more common in PET negative patients. Summary Background Presenting symptoms of childhood cancers might mimic those of rheumatic diseases. However, the evidence available to guide differential diagnosis remains scarce. Preventing wrong or delayed diagnosis is therefore important to avoid incorrect administration of glucocorticoid or immunosuppressive therapy and worsening of prognosis. As such, we aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of presenting musculoskeletal manifestations in patients at cancer onset and to identify the factors that differentiate childhood malignancies with arthropathy from juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Methods We did a multicentre, cross-sectional study at 25 paediatric haemato-oncology centres and 22 paediatric rheumatology centres in Italy. We prospectively recruited patients who were younger than 16 years that were newly diagnosed with cancer or juvenile idiopathic arthritis. We excluded patients with glucocorticoid pre-treatment (>1 mg/kg per day of oral prednisone or equivalent for ≥2 consecutive weeks). We collected data for patients with a new diagnosis of cancer or juvenile idiopathic arthritis using an electronic case report form on a web-based platform powered by the Cineca Interuniversity Consortium. The primary outcome was to describe the frequency and characteristics of musculoskeletal manifestations at cancer onset; and the secondary outcome was to identify factors that could discriminate malignancies presenting with arthropathy, with or without other musculoskeletal symptoms, from juvenile idiopathic arthritis using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Findings Between May 1, 2015, and May 31, 2018, 1957 patients were eligible, of which 1277 (65%) had cancer and 680 (35%) had juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Musculoskeletal symptoms occurred in 324 (25% [95% CI 23·0–27·8]) of 1277 patients with cancer, of whom 207 had arthropathy. Patients with malignant bone tumours had the highest frequency of musculoskeletal symptoms (53 [80%] of 66), followed by patients with Langerhans histiocytosis (16 [47%] of 34), leukaemia (189 [32%] of 582), soft-tissue sarcomas (16 [24%] of 68), and neuroblastoma (21 [19%] of 109). In the 324 patients with cancer and musculoskeletal symptoms, the most common complaints were joint pain (199 [61%]), followed by limb bone pain (112 [35%]). Joint involvement had a prevalent monoarticular pattern (100 [48%] of 207) and oligoarticular pattern (86 [42%] had 2–4 joints involved and 20 [10%] had >4 joints involved), with the most frequently involved joints being the hip (88 [43%] of 207) and knee (81 [39%]). On multivariable analysis, limb bone pain was the independent variable most strongly associated with cancer (odds ratio [OR] 87·80 [95% CI 18·89–408·12]), followed by weight loss (59·88 [6·34–565·53]), thrombocytopenia (12·67 [2·40–66·92]), monoarticular involvement (11·30 [4·09–31·19]), hip involvement (3·30 [1·13–9·61]), and male sex (2·40 [1·03–5·58]). Factors independently associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis were morning stiffness (OR 0·04 [95% CI 0·01–0·20]), joint swelling (0·03 [0·01–0·09]), and involvement of the small hand joints (0·02 [0–1·05]). Interpretation Our study provides detailed information about presenting musculoskeletal manifestations of childhood cancers and highlights the clinical and laboratory features that are most helpful in the differential diagnosis with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Background: Platinum-based therapy, combined or not with immune checkpoint inhibitors, represents a front-line choice for patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Despite the improved outcomes in the last years for this malignancy, only a sub-group of patients have long-term benefit. Excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) has been considered a potential biomarker to predict the outcome of platinum-based chemotherapy in NSCLC. However, the ERCC1 gene is transcribed in four splice variants where the isoform 202 was described as the only one active and able to complex Xeroderma pigmentosum group F-complementing protein (XPF). Here, we prospectively investigated if the active form of ERCC1, as assessed by the ERCC1/XPF complex (ERCC1/XPF), could predict the sensitivity to platinum compounds. Patients and methods: Prospectively enrolled, patients with advanced NSCLC treated with a first-line regimen containing platinum were centrally evaluated for ERCC1/XPF by a proximity ligation assay. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) and objective response rate (ORR) were analyzed. Results: The absence of the ERCC1/XPF in the tumor suggested a trend of worst outcomes in terms of both OS [hazard ratio (HR) 1.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.67-2.94, P = 0.373] and PFS (HR 1.61, 95% CI 0.88-3.03, P = 0.123). ORR was marginally influenced in ERCC1/XPF-negative and -positive groups [odds ratio (stable disease + progressive disease versus complete response + partial response) 0.87, 95% CI 0.25-3.07, P = 0.832]. Conclusion: The lack of ERCC1/XPF complex in NSCLC tumor cells might delineate a group of patients with poor outcomes when treated with platinum compounds. ERCC1/XPF absence might well identify patients for whom a different therapeutic approach could be necessary. © 2020 The Authors

The present article shows a modified compressed sensing algorithm using the underlined physical configuration of Digital Micromirror Device- DMD - a matrix - to recover, successfully, images with a Single Pixel Cam simulation apparatus.

Clinical data suggest that only a subgroup of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients has long-term benefits after front-line platinum-based therapy. We prospectively investigate whether KRAS status and DNA polymerase β expression could help identify patients responding to platinum compounds. Prospectively enrolled, advanced NSCLC patients treated with a first-line regimen containing platinum were genotyped for KRAS and centrally evaluated for DNA polymerase β expression. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and the objective response rate (ORR) were recorded. Patients with KRAS mutations had worse OS (hazard ratio (HR): 1.37, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.70–2.27). Negative DNA polymerase β staining identified a subgroup with worse OS than patients expressing the protein (HR: 1.43, 95% CI: 0.57–3.57). The addition of KRAS to the analyses further worsened the prognosis of patients with negative DNA polymerase β staining (HR: 1.67, 95% CI: 0.52–5.56). DNA polymerase β did not influence PFS and ORR. KRAS may have a negative role in platinum-based therapy responses in NSCLC, but its impact is limited. DNA polymerase β, when not expressed, might indicate a group of patients with poor outcomes. KRAS mutations in tumors not expressing DNA polymerase β further worsens survival. Therefore, these two biomarkers together might well identify patients for whom alternatives to platinum-based chemotherapy should be used. © 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

This study presents the results of the 4th Filter Radiometer Comparison that was held in Davos, Switzerland, between September 28 and October 16, 2015. Thirty filter radiometers and spectroradiometers from 12 countries participated including reference instruments from global aerosol networks. The absolute differences of all instruments compared to the reference have been based on the WMO criterion defined as 95 % of the measured data has to be within 0.005 ± 0.001/m (where m is the air mass). At least 24 out of 29 instruments achieved this goal at both 500 and 865 nm, while 12 out of 17 and 13 out of 21 achieved this at 368 and 412 nm, respectively. While searching for sources of differences among different instruments, it was found that all individual differences linked to Rayleigh, NO2, ozone, water vapor calculations and related optical depths and air mass calculations were smaller than 0.01 in AOD at 500 and 865 nm. Different cloud detecting algorithms used have been compared. Ångström exponent calculations showed relatively large differences among different instruments partly because of the sensitivity of this parameter at low AOD conditions. The overall low deviations of these AOD results and the high accuracy of reference aerosol network instruments demonstrated a promising framework to achieve homogeneity, compatibility and harmonization among the different spectral AOD networks in the near-future.

Purpose To propose a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) quality assurance procedure that can be used for multicenter comparison of different MR scanners for quantitative diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Materials and Methods Twenty-six centers (35 MR scanners with field strengths: 1T, 1.5T, and 3T) were enrolled in the study. Two different DWI acquisition series (b-value ranges 0–1000 and 0–3000 s/mm2, respectively) were performed for each MR scanner. All DWI acquisitions were performed by using a cylindrical doped water phantom. Mean apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values as well as ADC values along each of the three main orthogonal directions of the diffusion gradients (x, y, and z) were calculated. Short-term repeatability of ADC measurement was evaluated for 26 MR scanners. Results A good agreement was found between the nominal and measured mean ADC over all the centers. More than 80% of mean ADC measurements were within 5% from the nominal value, and the highest deviation and overall standard deviation were 9.3% and 3.5%, respectively. Digital radiography technology has replaced conventional screen-film systems in many hospitals. Despite the different characteristics of new detector materials, frequently, the same radiological protocols previously optimised for screen film are still used with digital equipment without any critical review. This study addressed optimisation of exposure settings for chest examinations with digital systems, considering both image quality and patient dose. Images acquired with direct digital radiography equipment and a computed radiography system were analysed with specially developed commercial software with a four-alternative forced-choice method: the most promising protocols were then scored by two senior radiologists. Digital technology offers a wide dynamic range and the ability to postprocess images, allowing use of lower tube potentials in chest examinations. The computed radiography system showed both better image quality and lower dose at lower energies (85 kVp and 95 kVp) than those currently used (125 kVp). Direct digital radiography equipment confirmed both its superior image quality and lower dose requirements compared with the storage phosphor plate system. Generally, lowering tube potentials in chest examinations seems to allow better image quality/effective dose ratio when using digital equipment.

Analysis of halogenated volatile organic compounds (HVOCs) by GC–MS demonstrates the use of instrumentation in the environmental analysis of pollutant molecules and enhances student understanding of stable isotopes in nature. In this experiment, students separated and identified several HVOCs that have been implicated as industrial groundwater contaminants and deduced the isotopic content by analyzing the molecular ion region of the mass spectra. The HVOCs were analyzed by direct sampling of the headspace vapor over a dilute aqueous solution, which is designed to simulate a contaminated groundwater sample. The rapid headspace sampling and analysis allowed completion of the experiment by many lab classes per week. The impact of the lab was assessed using online surveys before and after the lab that queried student perceptions of their understanding, skills, and attitudes toward science and chemistry. The ocean color component of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET-OC) has been implemented to support long-term satellite ocean color investigations through cross-site consistent and accurate measurements collected by autonomous radiometer systems deployed on offshore fixed platforms. The AERONET-OC data products are the normalized water-leaving radiances determined at various center wavelengths in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions. These data complement atmospheric AERONET aerosol products, such as optical thickness, size distribution, single scattering albedo, and phase function. This work describes in detail this new AERONET component and its specific elements including measurement method, instrument calibration, processing scheme, quality assurance, uncertainties, data archive, and products accessibility. Additionally, the atmospheric and bio-optical features of the sites currently included in AERONET-OC are briefly summarized. After illustrating the application of AERONET-OC data to the validation of primary satellite products over a variety of complex coastal waters, recommendations are then provided for the identification of new deployment sites most suitable to support satellite ocean color missions.

Problem statement: In our undergraduate science courses, we need to engage students by including the current issues and concerns of our students as well as recognizing the place-based context in which they learn. Including culture, policy and traditional knowledge when it intersects with a chemical principle and a challenging real world issue adds concreteness to the scientific process. Approach: Science Education for New Civic Engagement and Responsibilities (SENCER) is a national dissemination project for courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. SENCER courses connect science and civic engagement by teaching through complex, capacious, current and unresolved public issues to the underlying scientific principles. The more that our students were exposed to culturally responsive interdisciplinary science courses that encompass biocomplexity, the more prepared they will act as agents of long term stewardship through periods of rapid change and ecological challenge. It was therefore critical that issues such as sustainability, environmental health, food security, justice and precaution be integrated into science teaching. In studying public issues of the north, students and faculty can use examples from traditional knowledge to illustrate the use of science principles. Results: As part of the IPY UARCTIC effort, examples from climate change, nutrition, nuclear science and chemical ecology were developed to illustrate this integration. The courses adapted and delivered at an arctic university will illustrate the benefits of integrating social and cultural topics with science. Student responses showed an increase in interest in science. Conclusion: The adapt and adopt process is synergistic and should be goal oriented. This approach was especially relevant to minority and indigenous students who were engaged in the issues of their local community. The SENCER approach to arctic science creates a legacy of new, engaging courses in the north.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar as características de desempenho da versão brasileira do questionário Tolerance, Annoyed, Cut down e Eye-opener (T-ACE), para rastreamento do consumo de álcool na gestação. MÉTODOS: Estudo observacional, transversal, em amostra seqüencial de 450 mulheres no terceiro trimestre de gestação, assistidas em maternidade no município de Ribeirão Preto, estado de São Paulo, em 2001. Foram aplicados: questionário para coleta de dados sociodemográficos, T-ACE, questionário para levantamento da história de consumo de álcool ao longo da gestação e entrevista clínica para identificação de uso nocivo e dependência ao álcool, segundo critérios diagnósticos da CID-10. Foram feitos testes de concordância entre diferentes entrevistadores e de confiabilidade teste/re-teste. RESULTADOS: Do total, 100 gestantes (22,1%) foram consideradas positivas pelo T-ACE. Os índices kappa para concordância e confiabilidade foram 0,95, com 97% de respostas concordantes. Quando comparado aos parâmetros da CID-10 e ao padrão de consumo, o T-ACE com ponto de corte igual ou acima de dois pontos, apresentou coeficientes de sensibilidade e especificidade de 100% e 85% e de 97,9% e 86,6% respectivamente. CONCLUSÕES: A versão brasileira do T-ACE mostrou preencher adequadamente os critérios de desempenho que a qualificam ao papel de instrumento básico para o rastreamento do consumo de álcool durante a gravidez. Sua utilização é recomendável nas rotinas e práticas dos serviços obstétricos devido à tendência de aumento do consumo alcoólico feminino, dificuldades para identificação do abuso de álcool pela gestante e riscos de problemas de desenvolvimento nos filhos.

When radiometers on satellites point toward Earth with the goal of sensing an important variable quantitatively, rather than just creating a pleasing image, the task at hand is often not simple. The electromagnetic energy detected by the radiometers is a puzzle of various signals; it must be solved to quantify the specific physical variable. This task, called the retrieval or remote-sensing process, is important to most satellite-based observation programs. It would be ideal to test the algorithms for retrieval processes in a sealed laboratory, where all the relevant parameters could be easily measured. The size and complexity of the Earth make this impractical. NASA's Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) project has done the next-best thing by developing a long-term radiation observation site over the ocean. In this work, high surface area antimony doped tin oxide (Sb-SnO2) has been synthesized using a modified sol-gel synthesis method. The bulk and surface properties of the metal oxide support have been investigated as a function of the processing conditions. A change in the Sb-SnO2 processing conditions, while preserving an overall invariant bulk composition, led to substantial modification of the surface stoichiometry. Accelerated stability test protocols have shown that the surface composition represents a crucial parameter for the electrochemical stability of Sb-SnO2. Model Pt/Sb-SnO2 electrodes have been developed depositing Pt nanoparticles by magnetron sputtering on the optimized Sb-SnO2 porous surface. A significant enhancement in the corrosion stability upon 1000 potential cycles between 0.5 and 1.5 V (RHE) at 50 mV s(-1) has been observed for the Pt/Sb-SnO2 system compared to Pt/carbon.

Reclaimed glass powders from fluorescent lamps are sieved in two particle size ranges after Hg purification and are subjected to thermal plasma in-flight treatment by injection into the discharge of a Tekna PL-35 plasma torch and reaction chamber as part of a source operated at 3MHz with a maximum power of 25kW, with Ar as plasma and carrier gas and N2 as sheath gas. The sieved powders and the plasma treated ones have been characterized by powder XRD and particle size analysis in order to verify if the plasma treatment can induce modification in the minera-logical and physical characteristics. The spherical shape of the particles has been analyzed by scanning electron mi-croscopy. Moreover, this technique has allowed to verify if the plasma treatment can induce modification of the (qualitative) chemical composition of the powder. Results for various operating conditions and injection probe posi-tions are presented. The spherical powders have been then introduced in thermoplastic polymers in place of glass spheres usually used, and the results are compared to each others. The samples are characterized by mechanical tests (flexural strength) and microstructural analysis (SEM) in order to verify the differences in materials properties ob-tainable by mean of conventional and plasma assisted processes.

A novel approach for tailoring strained Pt model electrocatalysts using pulsed laser deposition is presented. The physical properties of Pt films grown on single crystalline (100) and (111) oriented strontium titanate depend significantly on the various deposition parameters (e.g. fluence temperature background atmosphere postannealing and number of process steps) as revealed by scanning electron microscopy and X ray studies. By properly selecting the deposition conditions thin epitaxial and strained (100) and (111) oriented Pt films suitable as model electrodes can be prepared. Cyclic voltammetry measurements indicate that the strain in the Pt films changes significantly the Pt surface properties such as the hydrogen underpotential deposition (Hupd) features. CO oxidation experiments demonstrate that the strain affects strongly also the position of the CO oxidation peak shifting it to more positive potentials. This might be attributed to a modification of the adsorption behavior of oxygenated species on the strained interface. This research clearly highlights the potential of using as produced Pt film as model catalysts to study the effect of strain on electrocatalytic reactions while minimizing possible side effects connected to the common preparation methods for strained Pt catalysts such as alloy formation alloy leeching or conductive support contributions.

Environmentally friendly energy conversion devices such as fuel cells are becoming more and more attractive. However major impediments to large scale application still arise on the material side related to the cost and poor performance of the cathode catalyst. State of the art electrocatalysts are all Pt based materials suffering from poor electrochemical oxygen reduction kinetics. Tuning the interatomic distance of Pt atoms represents a promising strategy for reducing the strength of adsorption of oxygenated species to the Pt surface and thus improving the kinetics. In this context model Pt electrocatalysts of strain induced varied interatomic spacing were fabricated and tested. Strained Pt films with high crystalline quality can be obtained via epitaxial growth on appropriate single crystal substrates like (111) SrTiO3 which have lattice parameters different from those of Pt using pulsed laser deposition. Through a proper selection of deposition parameters the extent of strain in the Pt films can be controlled. This study shows that strain significantly modifies the electrochemical surface properties. In particular cyclic voltammetry and CO oxidation experiments provide valuable insights into the effect of strain on the adsorption properties of spectator species (e.g. OHad and bisulfates) relevant for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. Furthermore the strained Pt films exhibit a remarkably higher oxidation reduction reaction activity compared to that of the fully relaxed bulk structure as obtained from ORR polarization curves. This research highlights the importance of proper model systems with defined physical properties to establish design principles for better performing catalysts.

Background: It is not known whether smoking by mothers during pregnancy is associated with headache in their offspring. Methods: Two prospective cohorts of 869 children aged 10–11 years from Ribeirão Preto (RP) and 805 children aged 7–9 years from São Luís (SL) were studied. Data on maternal smoking were collected at birth. Primary headache was defined as a reporting of ≥2 episodes of headache in the past 2 weeks, without any associated organic symptoms. Results: Prevalence of headache was 28.1% in RP and 13.1% in SL as reported by the mothers and 17.5% in RP and 29.4% in SL as reported by the children. Agreement between mothers’ report and children’s self-report of primary headache in the child was poor. After adjustment, children whose mothers smoked ≥10 cigarettes per day during pregnancy presented higher prevalence of primary headache than their counterparts in both cohorts, as reported by the mother and in RP as reported by the children. Conclusions: Maternal smoking during pregnancy was associated with headache in 7- to 11-year-olds. With one exception, the consistency of the results, despite poor agreement between maternal and children reports of headache, indicates that maternal smoking during pregnancy may contribute to headaches in their children.

Where you live should have something to do with what you teach. In the Arctic, the idea of place-based education – teaching and sharing knowledge that is needed to live well – is central to the UARCTIC consortium and the 4th International Polar Year educational reform effort. A place-based issue oriented context can engage students in chemistry concepts when it intersects with their experience and lives. This article examines the rationale and means of integrating local concerns such as world view, culture, traditional knowledge, and policy into both general and specialized chemistry courses. More broadly, capacious placebased issues should be widely adapted by all curriculum reform efforts to demonstrate the connectivity between science and societal understanding of technological options. A case in point is the inclusion of indigenous perspectives in a non-majors general chemistry course when the concepts of scientific method, ice and water resources, genetic engineering, and so forth are discussed. In a specialized course on radioactivity in the north, topics connected nuclear chemistry and radioactivity to people and energy. The local landscape should be central to science courses and involve issues relevant to stewardship, a component of the indigenous world view. The historical issues can be connected to current nuclear energy and uranium mining as they relate to the risks and benefits for the local community. This article will make the case that curriculum reform that focuses on real-world topics will not only engage students so that they perform well in class but also spark their interest so that they continue learning after the course is over.

To identify fetal cord blood prognostic markers of symptomatic congenital human cytomegalovirus infection (HCMV).Retrospective observational study.Fetal medicine unit in Milan and Medical virology unit in Pavia, Italy.HCMV-infected and -uninfected fetuses of mothers with primary HCMV infection during the period 1995-2009.Overall, 94 blood samples from as many fetuses of 93 pregnant women experiencing primary HCMV infection were examined for multiple immunological, haematological and biochemical markers as well as virological markers. Congenital HCMV infection was diagnosed by detection of virus in amniotic fluid, and symptomatic/asymptomatic infections were determined by ultrasound scans, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, histopathology or clinical examination at birth. Blood sample markers were retrospectively compared in symptomatic and asymptomatic fetuses with congenital infection.A statistical analysis was performed to determine the value of each parameter in predicting outcome.Univariate analysis showed that most nonviral and viral markers were significantly different in symptomatic (n = 16) compared with asymptomatic (n = 31) fetuses. Receiver operator characteristics analysis indicated that, with reference to an established cutoff for each marker, the best nonviral factors for differentiation of symptomatic from asymptomatic congenital infection were β(2) -microglobulin and platelet count, and the best virological markers were immunoglobulin M antibody and DNAaemia. β(2) -Microglobulin alone or the combination of these four markers reached the optimal diagnostic efficacy.The determination of multiple markers in fetal blood, following virus detection in amniotic fluid samples, is predictive of perinatal outcome in fetuses with HCMV infection.
