Abstract

Rocky planets with temperate conditions provide the best chance for discovering habitable worlds and life outside the Solar System. In the last decades, new instrumental facilities and large observational campaigns have been driven by the quest for habitable worlds. Climate models aimed at studying the habitability of rocky planets are essential tools to pay off these technological and observational endeavours. In this context, we present EOS-ESTM, a fast and flexible model aimed at exploring the impact on habitability of multiple climate factors, including those unconstrained by observations. EOS-ESTM is built on ESTM, a seasonal-latitudinal energy balance model featuring an advanced treatment of the meridional and vertical transport. The novel features of EOS-ESTM include: (1) parameterizations for simulating the climate impact of oceans, land, ice, and clouds as a function of temperature and stellar zenith distance; (2) a procedure (EOS) for calculating the radiative transfer in atmospheres with terrestrial and non-terrestrial compositions illuminated by solar- and non-solar-type stars. By feeding EOS-ESTM with Earth's stellar, orbital and planetary parameters we derive a reference model that satisfies a large number of observational constraints of the Earth's climate system. Validation tests of non-terrestrial conditions yield predictions that are in line with comparable results obtained with a hierarchy of climate models. The application of EOS-ESTM to planetary atmospheres in maximum greenhouse conditions demonstrates the possibility of tracking the snowball transition at the outer edge of the HZ for a variety of planetary parameters, paving the road for multi-parametric studies of the HZ., 22 pages, 14 figures, 10 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Nowadays, systemic approaches based on introspective methodologies are no longer fashionable and are often overlooked or ignored. Most frequently, reductionist approaches are followed for deciphering the neuronal circuits functionally associated with cognitive processes. However, we argue that systemic studies of individual thought may still contribute to a useful and complementary description of the multimodal nature of perception, because they can take into account individual diversity while still identifying the common features of perceptual processes. We propose to address this question by looking at one possible task for recognition of a “signifying sound”, as an example of conceptual grasping of a perceptual response. By adopting a mixed approach combining qualitative analyses of interviews based on introspection with quantitative statistical analyses carried out on the resulting categorization, this study describes a variety of mental strategies used by musicians to identify notes’ pitch. Sixty-seven musicians (music students and professionals) were interviewed, revealing that musicians utilize intermediate steps during note identification by selecting or activating cognitive bricks that help construct and reach the correct decision. We named these elements “mental anchorpoints” (MA). Although the anchorpoints are not universal, and differ between individuals, they can be grouped into categories related to three main sensory modalities – auditory, visual and kinesthetic. Such categorization enabled us to characterize the mental representations (MR) that allow musicians to name notes in relationship to eleven basic typologies of anchorpoints. We propose a conceptual framework which summarizes the process of note identification in five steps, starting from sensory detection and ending with the verbalization of the note pitch, passing through the pivotal role of MAs and MRs. We found that musicians use multiple strategies and select individual combinations of MAs belonging to these three different sensory modalities, both in isolation and in combination.

Abstract

We are developing a novel Transition Radiation Detector (SiTRD) based on silicon strip detectors (SSDs) operated in a magnetic field region. In this way the trajectory of the radiating particle is deflected with respect to the Transition Radiation X-rays that are absorbed in a detector region far away from the particle track. The SiTRD combines the particle identification performance of a traditional TRD with the high-precision tracking capability of SSDs, and it can be suitable for both accelerator and cosmic ray experiments, whenever particle identification and momentum reconstruction are required. In this paper we will show the experimental results obtained with a reduced scale SiTRD prototype exposed to an electron–pion beam.

Abstract

The MAGIC collaboration has studied the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object 1ES 1218 + 30.4, at a redshift z = 0.182, using the MAGIC imaging air Cerenkov telescope located on the Canary Island of La Palma. A gamma-ray signal was observed with 6.4 sigma significance. The differential energy spectrum for an energy threshold of 120 GeV can be fitted by a simple power law, yielding F-E = (8.1 +/- 2.1) x 10(-7)[E/(250 GeV)](-3.0 +/- 0.4) TeV-1 F (E) m(-2) s(-1). During the 6 days of observation in 2005 January, no time variability on timescales of days was found within the statistical errors. The observed integral flux above 350 GeV is nearly a factor of 2 below the upper limit reported by the Whipple collaboration in 2003.

Abstract

The MAGIC Cerenkov telescope has observed very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the active galactic nucleus 1ES 1959+650 during 6 hr in 2004 September and October. The observations were carried out alternating with observations of the Crab Nebula, whose data were used as a reference source for optimizing gamma -ray/hadron separation and for flux comparison. The data analysis shows VHE gamma-ray emission of 1ES 1959+650 with similar to 8 sigma significance, at a time of low activity in both optical and X-ray wavelengths. An integral flux above similar to 180 GeV of about 20% that of the Crab Nebula was obtained. The light curve, sampled over 7 days, shows no significant variations. The differential energy spectrum between 180 GeV and 2 TeV can be fitted with a power-law of index -2.72 +/- 0.14. The spectrum is consistent with the slightly steeper spectrum seen by HEGRA at higher energies, also during periods of low X-ray activity.

Abstract

The long-duration GRB050713a was observed by the MAGIC Telescope, 40 seconds after the burst onset, and followed up for 37 minutes, until twilight. The observation, triggered by a SWIFT alert, covered energies above ~175 GeV. Using standard MAGIC analysis, no evidence for a gamma signal was found. As the redshift of the GRB was not measured directly, the flux upper limit, estimated by MAGIC, is still compatible with the assumption of an unbroken power-law spectrum extending from a few hundred keV to our energy range., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ

Abstract

Recently, the HESS collaboration has reported the detection of gamma-ray emission above a few hundred GeV from eight new sources located close to the Galactic Plane. The source HESS J1813-178 has sparked particular interest, as subsequent radio observations imply an association with SNR G12.82-0.02. Triggered by the detection in VHE gamma-rays, a positionally coincident source has also been found in INTEGRAL and ASCA data. In this Letter we present MAGIC observations of HESS J1813-178, resulting in the detection of a differential gamma-ray flux consistent with a hard-slope power law, described as dN/(dA dt dE) = (3.3+/-0.5)*10^{-12} (E/TeV)^{-2.1+/-0.2} cm^(-2)s^(-1)TeV^(-1). We briefly discuss the observational technique used, the procedure implemented for the data analysis, and put this detection in the perspective of multifrequency observations., Accepted by ApJ Letters

Abstract

Ground-based Cherenkov telescopes have made in recent years important contributions to high energy gamma-ray astronomy. A lower energy threshold, considerably below 100 GeV, and improved sensitivity will be key parameters to extend their role. A lower threshold will permit these instruments to cover wavelengths with good overlap with satellite experiments, thus providing essential complementary information. The latest generation of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes was built with this criterion in mind. Preliminary studies concerning further progress in the same direction have started. We discuss in this contribution the astrophysics and physics arguments for lowering the observable energy threshold as far as the Cherenkov technique permits, and the ensuing complementarity to results obtained with a GLAST-like satellite.

Abstract

We are exploring the relationship between accents and expression in piano performance. Accents are local events that attract a listener’s attention and are either evident from the score (immanent) or added by the performer (performed). Immanent accents are associated with grouping (phrasing), metre, melody and harmony. In piano music, performed accents involve changes in timing, dynamics, articulation, and pedalling; they vary in amplitude, form, and duration. We analyzed the first eight bars of Chopin Prelude op. 28 n. 6. In a separate study, music theorists had marked grouping, melodic and harmonic accents on the score and estimated the importance (salience) of each. Here, we mathematically modeled timing and dynamics in the prelude in two ways using Director Musices (DM) – a software package for automatic rendering of expressive performance. The first rendering focused on phrasing following existing and tested procedures in DM. The second focused on accents – timing and dynamics in the vicinity of the accents identified by the theorists. In an informal listening test, 10 out of 12 participants (5 of 6 musicians and 5 of 6 non-musicians) preferred the accent-based formulation, and several stated that it had more variation of timing and dynamics from one phrase to the next.

Abstract

Microquasars are binary star systems with relativistic radio-emitting jets. They are potential sources of cosmic rays and can be used to elucidate the physics of relativistic jets. We report the detection of variable gamma-ray emission above 100 gigaelectron volts from the microquasar LS I 61 + 303. Six orbital cycles were recorded. Several detections occur at a similar orbital phase, which suggests that the emission is periodic. Abstract

The content of matter in the Universe is estimated to be the 27% of its critical density. It is almost universally accepted that most ot this matter is non-baryonic. Constraints from primordial nucleosynthesis and cosmic background radiation measurements impose that the baryonic content of the Universe cannot exceed the 4% of the critical density, so the nature of the remaining 23% has yet to be identi ed. In this sense, one of the most promising candidates is represented by supersymmetric neutralinos. If they exist, they give rise to relic densities in the required range, and are very well motivated in the framework of theoretical extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. In addition to direct neutralino searches and collider experiments, neutralino annihilation into gamma rays, neutrinos and synchrotron emission from the charged products represents a reliable way of detecting these intriguing particles. The strongest signals are expected to come from the Galactic Center and from the nearest dwarf spheroidals. Clumps of dark matter in galactic haloes are well predicted by high resolution cold dark matter numerical simulations. In this work we present our studies on the gamma-ray emission from the Galactic Center and from the Draco dwarf spheroidal. We investigate the e ect of clumpiness on the detection of signals from neutalinos for di erent mass density pro les. One of the scienti c goals of the MAGIC telescope are just searches for the stable lightest supersymmetric particle in the di erent physical scenarios in which they are produed. Assuming MAGIC speci cations, we draw some conclusions about the potentialities of this telescope in such a kind of investigation.

Abstract

Luminosities and uxes of the expected population of galactic gamma-ray pulsars become foreseeable if physical distributions at birth and evolutive history are assigned. In this work we estimate the contribution of pulsar uxes to the gamma-ray background, which has been measured by the EGRET experiment on board of the CGRO. For pulsar luminosities we select some of the most important gamma-ray emission models, taking into account both polar cap and outer gap scenarios. We nd that this contribution strongly depends upon controversial neutron star birth properties. A comparison between our simulation results and EGRET data is presented for each model, nding an average contribution of about 10%. In addition, we perform the calculation of the number of new gamma-ray pulsars detectable by GLAST and AGILE, showing a remarkable di erence between the two classes of models. Finally, we suggest some improvements in the numerical code, including more sophisticated galactic m odels and di erent populations of pulsars like binaries, milliseconds, anomalous pulsars and magnetars.

Abstract

The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object Markarian~180 (Mrk~180) was observed to have an optical outburst in 2006 March, triggering a Target of Opportunity observation with the MAGIC telescope. The source was observed for 12.4 hr and very high energy $\gamma$-ray emission was detected with a significance of 5.5 $\sigma$. An integral flux above 200 GeV of $(2.3\pm0.7)\times10^{-11} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$ was measured, corresponding to 11% of the Crab Nebula flux. Abstract

Recently, the Galactic Center has been reported to be a source of very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays by the VERITAS, CANGAROO and HESS experiments. The energy spectra as measured by these experiments show substantial differences. In this Letter we present MAGIC observations of the Galactic Center, resulting in the detection of a differential gamma-ray flux consistent with a steady, hard-slope power law, described as dN/(dA dt dE) = (2.9+/-0.6)*10^{-12} (E/TeV)^{-2.2+/-0.2} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1}. The gamma-ray source is centered at (Ra, Dec)=(17h 45m 20s, -29deg 2'. This result confirms the previous measurements by the HESS experiment and indicates a steady source of TeV gamma-rays. We briefly describe the observational technique used, the procedure implemented for the data analysis, and discuss the results in the perspective of different models proposed for the acceleration of the VHE gamma-rays., ApJL submitted

Abstract

Recently, the HESS array has reported the detection of gamma-ray emission above a few hundred GeV from eight new sources located close to the Galactic Plane. The source HESS J1834-087 is spatially coincident with SNR G23.3-0.3 (W41). Here we present MAGIC observations of this source, resulting in the detection of a differential gamma-ray flux consistent with a power law, described as dN/(dA dt dE) = (3.7 +/- 0.6)*10^(-12) (E/TeV)^(-2.5 +/- 0.2) \ cm^(-2)s^(-1)TeV^(-1). We confirm the extended character of this flux. We briefly discuss the observational technique used, the procedure implemented for the data analysis, and put this detection in the perspective of the molecular environment found in the region of W41. We present 13CO and 12CO emission maps showing the existence of a massive molecular cloud in spatial superposition with the MAGIC detection., Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters

18. Strategies Used by Musicians to Identify Notes' Pitch: Cognitive Bricks and Mental Representations.

Abstract

To this day, the study of the substratum of thought and its implied mechanisms is rarely directly addressed. Nowadays, systemic approaches based on introspective methodologies are no longer fashionable and are often overlooked or ignored. Most frequently, reductionist approaches are followed for deciphering the neuronal circuits functionally associated with cognitive processes. However, we argue that systemic studies of individual thought may still contribute to a useful and complementary description of the multimodal nature of perception, because they can take into account individual diversity while still identifying the common features of perceptual processes. We propose to address this question by looking at one possible task for recognition of a "signifying sound", as an example of conceptual grasping of a perceptual response. By adopting a mixed approach combining qualitative analyses of interviews based on introspection with quantitative statistical analyses carried out on the resulting categorization, this study describes a variety of mental strategies used by musicians to identify notes' pitch. Sixty-seven musicians (music students and professionals) were interviewed, revealing that musicians utilize intermediate steps during note identification by selecting or activating cognitive bricks that help construct and reach the correct decision. We named these elements "mental anchorpoints" (MA). Although the anchorpoints are not universal, and differ between individuals, they can be grouped into categories related to three main sensory modalities - auditory, visual and kinesthetic. Such categorization enabled us to characterize the mental representations (MR) that allow musicians to name notes in relationship to eleven basic typologies of anchorpoints. We propose a conceptual framework which summarizes the process of note identification in five steps, starting from sensory detection and ending with the verbalization of the note pitch, passing through the pivotal role of MAs and MRs. By immanent accent we mean any musical event in the score that is related to important points in the musical structure (e.g., tactus positions, melodic peaks) and is therefore able to capture the attention of a listener. Our aim was to investigate the underlying principles of these accented notes by combining quantitative modeling, music analysis and experimental methods. A listening experiment was conducted where 30 participants indicated perceived accented notes for 60 melodies, vocal and instrumental, selected from Baroque, Romantic and Post-tonal styles. This produced a large and unique collection of perceptual data about the perceived immanent accents, organized by styles consisting of vocal and instrumental melodies within Western art music. The music analysis of the indicated accents provided a preliminary list of musical features that could be identified as possible reasons for the raters' perception of the immanent accents. These features related to the score in different ways, e.g., repeated fragments, single notes, or overall structure. A modeling approach was used to quantify the influence of feature groups related to pitch contour, tempo, timing, simple phrasing, and meter. A set of 43 computational features was defined from the music analysis and previous studies and extracted from the score representation. The mean ratings of the participants were predicted using multiple linear regression and support vector regression. The latter method (using cross-validation) obtained the best result of about 66% explained variance ( r = 0.81) across all melodies and for a selected group of raters. The independent contribution of each feature group was relatively high for pitch contour and timing (9.6 and 7.0%). There were also significant contributions from tempo (4.5%), simple phrasing (4.4%), and meter (3.9%). Interestingly, the independent contribution varied greatly across participants, implying different listener strategies, and also some variability across different styles. The large differences among listeners emphasize the importance of considering the individual listener's perception in future research in music perception.

20. A Computational Model of Immanent Accent Salience in Tonal Music.

Abstract

Accents are local musical events that attract the attention of the listener, and can be either immanent (evident from the score) or performed (added by the performer). Immanent accents involve temporal grouping (phrasing), meter, melody, and harmony; performed accents involve changes in timing, dynamics, articulation, and timbre. In the past, grouping, metrical and melodic accents were investigated in the context of expressive music performance. We present a novel computational model of immanent accent salience in tonal music that automatically predicts the positions and saliences of metrical, melodic and harmonic accents. The model extends previous research by improving on preliminary formulations of metrical and melodic accents and introducing a new model for harmonic accents that combines harmonic dissonance and harmonic surprise. In an analysis-by-synthesis approach, model predictions were compared with data from two experiments, respectively involving 239 sonorities and 638 sonorities, and 16 musicians and 5 experts in music theory. Average pair-wise correlations between raters were lower for metrical (0.27) and melodic accents (0.37) than for harmonic accents (0.49). In both experiments, when combining all the raters into a single measure expressing their consensus, correlations between ratings and model predictions ranged from 0.43 to 0.62. When different accent categories of accents were combined together, correlations were higher than for separate categories ( r = 0.66). This suggests that raters might use strategies different from individual metrical, melodic or harmonic accent models to mark the musical events.

Abstract

Microquasars are binary star systems with relativistic radio-emitting jets. They are potential sources of cosmic rays and can be used to elucidate the physics of relativistic jets. We report the detection of variable gamma-ray emission above 100 gigaelectron volts from the microquasar LS I 61 + 303. Six orbital cycles were recorded. Several detections occur at a similar orbital phase, which suggests that the emission is periodic. The strongest gamma-ray emission is not observed when the two stars are closest to one another, implying a strong orbital modulation of the emission or absorption processes.
