This case study (n=5) explored how second language (L2) learners perceive changes in their learning autonomy in a technology-integrated, 3ld-year university Korean language class. The curriculum integrated three Web 2.0 tools (VoiceThread, Padlet, and a Grammar/Spell checker) and one mobile tool (Urimal 365: a synchronous chatting service for Korean learning) that assisted with students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities. Students completed eight VoiceThread speaking assignments, seven Padlet activities, and regularly used the online Grammar/Spell checker as a writing aid throughout the semester. However, the students decided to stop using Urimal 365. Data included one-hour interviews, post-semester surveys, and student work examples. The findings revealed that participants' diverse backgrounds and beliefs regarding L2 learning drove their decisions regarding how to use the technology. The students reported their dynamic approaches toward the tools and changes in their autonomous learning while completing the four technology projects. The multiple uses of the tools impacted students' cognitive and affective domains simultaneously in their Korean learning. Lastly, the students autonomously formed a strong sense of e-learning community. The pedagogical implications for integrating technology tools and fostering learner autonomy through the use of the tools are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL media ,FORMATIVE tests ,COMPUTER adaptive testing ,LEARNING strategies ,INSTRUCTIONAL systems ,ACADEMIC achievement - Abstract
Individual instruction is recognized as an effective learning method which is highly supported by the so-called personalized, intelligent or adaptive systems. The main purpose of this learning method is to offer customized content, experience or tools, based on the learning profile of students (learning style, gender, prior knowledge, learning goals and so on), so as to improve the learning outcomes. There are two wide-known adaption techniques implemented by learning systems to provide individual instruction: adaptability and adaptivity. The first one allows the students to take control, e.g. the learning system provides choices to let the students adapt the steps, sequences, difficulty level, preferences, while the second empowers the system, which is able to build a student model and to provide learning support based on that model. The current paper presents PoliCAT - a learning system based on Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) principle, which implements the second adaption technique (adaptivity) to provide individual instruction. Furthermore, the proposed webbased application supports the new learning paradigms, e.g. student-centered learning, communities of practice, and constructivism in general and relies on the current technologies - Web 2.0 and social Web, as students are able to share one's results on social media. The system is described as a useful tool for self-regulated learning, answering thus at the question whether assessment may have a strong formative role in learning or not. Besides highlighting the key features of the application, the paper provides experimental results from a web programming course for forth year students enrolled in an engineering degree program, who used the developed system as a learning tool during one semester. Students reported that they succeeded in strengthening their study skills and monitoring their academic progress through the learning analytics features. The available personalized feedback PoliCAT, as well as the possibility to share one's results in an e-community makes the instrument to be an attractive tool for today's social and cultural values of students, fact proven by the experiment as well. Introduction Many individuals with eating disorder problems seek information and support online. There are however numerous websites that promote eating disordered behaviors. The website and e-community 'Proud2Bme' was developed as a healthy alternative for pro-eating disorder websites, providing a safe, positive, and pro-recovery focused environment. It offers a wide array of information and personal stories, as well as platforms for interaction such as a forum and chat. The first aim of this study was to investigate whether, and to what extent, empowering processes and outcomes are experienced by participants on Proud2Bme. The second aim was to examine correlates of empowering processes and outcomes. Methods Participants (n=311) were recruited via an online survey on Proud2Bme. Correlations were examined and T-tests and ANOVAs were conducted. Results Exchanging information, finding recognition, and sharing experiences were the empowering processes most often reported by participants. The most pronounced empowering outcome was feeling better informed. To a smaller degree, increased help-seeking behavior, increased optimism and control over the future, and increased confidence in treatment and the relationship with the therapist were reported. Lower levels of general empowerment, younger age, and more interactive usage patterns of the website were positively associated with the experience of empowering processes and outcomes. Offering a platform where individuals can share their experiences and find recognition might be one of the most important ingredients for successful e-health initiatives aimed at improving patient empowerment. Moreover, in the field of eating disorders specifically, such initiatives offer a healthy alternative to the harmful and negative effects of pro-eating disorder websites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMMUNITIES ,CYBERSPACE ,SOCIAL change ,GROUP identity ,INFORMATION society ,INFORMATION & communication technologies - Abstract
This article discusses a redefined notion of community - comparing and contrasting the features of social communities in physically local and virtual spaces. Analyzing the history of community studies, several typologies of communities are discussed. The notion of community in different classical sociological theories is explored focusing on several key dimensions. First, it is the socio-physical locale as a bounding structure for social interaction and basis for common social ties. The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) is conceived as significantly changing the understanding of community concept. Cyberspace, virtual, computer-mediated, on-line or likewise conceptualized communities are conceived as dynamic and rather elusive entities of social organization. The redefined notions of community in cyberspace do not definitely transgress the boundaries of geographical place as a fundamental element of social interaction, however, the emphasis on the social, which sometimes is fragmented and often localized, is significantly enriched by the varieties of mobility not just in terms of location, but also in terms of social identity construction. Cyberspace communities, as the paper concludes, not only enrich the traditional conceptualization of community, but also manifest ideas and insights of a postmodern society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DEMOCRACY ,PRESSURE groups ,POLITICAL science ,POLITICIANS ,CONTENT analysis - Abstract
On-line political communities, such as the Norwegian site Demokratitorget (Democracy Square), are often designed according to a set of un-reflected assumptions about the political interests of their potential members. In political science, democracy is not taken as given in this way, but can be represented by different models which characterize different relationships between politicians and the citizens they represent. This paper uses quantitative and qualitative content analysis to analyze the communication mediated by the Democracy Square discussion forum in the first ten months of its life. In the quantitative analysis, citizens' and politicians' contributions are analyzed against four different democracy models: Consumer, Demo-Elitist, Neo-Republican and Cyber-Democratic. Whereas politicians' contributions mainly reflected the Demo-Elitist model, citizens' contributions tended to reflect the Neo-Republican model. In the qualitative analysis the discourse is analysed as repeating genres--patterns in the communication form which also reflect the conflict of interest between citizens and politicians. Though the analysis gives insight into the nature of the discourse the site supports, little is known about translating this kind of insight into better site design. We match the site's communication genres with known features of E-democracy sites to generate tentative design improvement possibilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present a non-technical overview of new forms of voluntary association called online (or e-) communities and explore the implications they present for community development theory and practice. E-communities are groups of people with common interests that communicate regularly, and for some duration, in an organized way over the Internet (Ridings et al., 2002). They are designed to provide users with a range of tools for learning, personal development, and collective action--all embedded in a complex, continuing, and personally enriching network of social relations. We pose several fundamental questions, including these: a) what are the key features of online communities? b) how do they compare to (offline) communities of place? c) how are they designed and developed? and d) how do e-community members use them to affect collective action? We define key terms related to online communities, place them in the context of broader Web cultural practices, and review emerging literature in online community development. We present findings from case studies of four very different active online communities. Social interaction in these communities was extensive, and surprisingly civil. Web site managers use a variety of community development practices to attract and retain members, and to establish community norms, trust, and collective resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Information and their availability in modern world are provided through many different channels. With already established and familiar traditional informing channels as print media, today we see arise of information spreading through internet channels. E-informing connects modern digital media with public spread all over the world. Presenting form of certain information in media affects forming of public opinion upon certain topic. Negative presenting tone could lead to developing of crisis situation in society, and in those cases it is important to control the situation and reduce negative outcomes of crisis. Media industry is subject of constant and ongoing changes and media effect on public will continue to grow as long as the media itself is being developed. The main purpose of this paper is to form critical opinion on the way new coronavirus, spread from China around the globe in the past two months, is presented in the digital media.

Currently, social networks play an important role. Several years ago, they were not taken seriously, but now the market scenario of the business has changed. People like to be more online than offline. Previously, the promotion of products for anyone was too long and costly, but now with the advent of social networks, companies have a new way by which they can promote their products and services with maximum cov‑ erage and minimum costs. Social networking tools facilitate the creation and sharing of knowledge, information, ideas and opinions, and also allow people to actively participate in the media themselves. This means a transition from passive consumption of marketing messages to active interaction with them. People spend more time on social networks and do so at the expense of traditional media. Despite the growing amount of time people spend on social networks, until recently they have not been used as a successful marketing tool to attract consum‑ ers. The article assesses the role of marketing in social networks for Russian companies today. As a result of the study, elements of online activity of companies and functions of online commu‑ nities are revealed. Reflects existing communication problems in creating engaging content and suggests possible ways to elimi‑ nate them. The article also analyzes the impact of social networks on the purchasing decision process, as well as explores such con‑ cepts as customer involvement and market orientation., №2(47) (2019)

This research work presents two approaches to improve the quality of the results returned by a case-based reasoning system (CBR) exploiting knowledge produced by an e-community. The first approach relies on a new model to manage the trustworthiness of the knowledge produced by the e community. In this model, the trustworthiness is represented through a score which is used to filter untrustworthy knowledge so that the CBR system will not use it anymore. Moreover, the trustworthiness score is also used to rank the CBR results. The second approach addresses the issue of representing the typicality between subclasses and classes in a hierarchy. The typicality is used to change the hierarchical organization used by the CBR system. Both approaches have been evaluated in the framework of eTaaable, a CBR system which adapts cooking recipes using knowledge coming from an e-community. The evaluations show that managing the trustworthiness of the knowledge produced by an e-community improves the quality of the results returned by eTaaable.

One of the critical success factors for the future development of the agri-food sector is the increased integration of enterprises and other stakeholders in horizontal and vertical ‘communities’. Tracking and tracing, agreements on quality policy, improvements in logistics, dissemination of innovations, cooperation in quality planning and market orientation, access to knowledge bases, etc. are all examples which build on an increased horizontal or vertical integration in information and communication activities. The paper will discuss ongoing research on the conceptualization, design and testing of online communities that provide the functionalities that might improve cooperation in the different (horizontal and vertical) dimensions. It builds on initiatives from the area of ‘collaborative working environments’, sometimes captured under the heading ‘electronic community house’. First prototypes utilize freely available software modules and demonstrate the capability of today’s level of development if one has a clear conceptual base.

Blogging, SMS, instant messaging and other forms of electronic communication are no exceptions to the rule of evolution of practical implementation of new technologies. In such context "Generation-Y" could be identified as a generation that feels "at home" with new communication paradigms. Therefore, it is important to raise the question of whether the theories/models of electronic community apply to electronic communication, as this migh imply that the "Gen-Y" just has a different outlook to social issues and community building than defined by the traditional social approaches.
