The deep core muscles are often neglected or improperly trained in athletes. Improper function of this musculature may lead to abnormal spinal loading, muscle strain, or injury to spinal structures, all of which have been associated with increased low back pain (LBP) risk. The purpose of this study was to identify potential strategies used to compensate for weakness of the deep core musculature during running and to identify accompanying changes in compressive and shear spinal loads. Kinematically-driven simulations of overground running were created for eight healthy young adults in OpenSim at increasing levels of deep core muscle weakness. The deep core muscles (multifidus, quadratus lumborum, psoas, and deep fascicles of the erector spinae) were weakened individually and together. The superficial longissimus thoracis was a significant compensator for 4 out of 5 weakness conditions (p 0.05). The deep erector spinae required the largest compensations when weakened individually (up to a 45 ± 10% increase in compensating muscle force production, p = 0.004), revealing it may contribute most to controlling running kinematics. With complete deep core muscle weakness, peak anterior shear loading increased on all lumbar vertebrae (up to 19%, p = 0.001). Additionally, compressive spinal loading increased on the upper lumbar vertebrae (up to 15%, p = 0.007) and decreased on the lower lumbar vertebrae (up to 8%, p = 0.008). Muscular compensations may increase risk of muscular fatigue or injury and increased spinal loading over numerous gait cycles may result in damage to spinal structures. Therefore, insufficient strength of the deep core musculature may increase a runner's risk of developing LBP.

Background Alcohol intake during pregnancy is considered to be a risk factor for child development. Child biomarkers of intrauterine alcohol exposure have been rarely studied. We investigated whether a meconium alcohol metabolite (ethyl glucuronide, EtG) was associated with cognitive development, ADHD-related behaviour and neurophysiological markers of attention and executive control of children at primary-school age. Methods Mothers provided self-report on prenatal alcohol consumption during their 3rd trimester. Meconium samples were collected at birth. A total of 44 children with a meconium EtG above the detection limit (≥10 ng/g) and 44 nonexposed matched controls were compared. A second threshold (≥154 ng/g) was applied to study the dose effects. When children reached primary-school age, mothers rated ADHD-related behaviour, child cognitive development was measured using an IQ test battery, and event-related potentials were recorded during a cued go/nogo task. Results Children in both EtG-positive groups allocated fewer attentional resources than controls to the go/nogo task (reduced P3 component in go-trials). Children with a meconium EtG above 154 ng/g were also found to have an IQ that was six points lower than the other groups. Within the EtG ≥ 154 ng/g group, there was a positive correlation between EtG value and ADHD-related behaviour. These significant effects were not observed in relation to the maternal self-report data. Conclusions Associations between EtG and cognitive deficits, attentional resource capacity and ADHD-related behaviour could be documented with effects that were partially dose-dependent. In addition to maternal self-reports, this biomarker of intrauterine alcohol exposure may be considered as a predictor of child development.

Studies have shown that child development is negatively affected by prenatal depression. A dysregulated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in the pregnant woman, passed to the fetus, is one discussed key mechanism. Studies, investigating primary-school age children, have found effects on antisocial behavior. Effects on internalizing symptoms were not found, but the analysis did not distinguish between anxiety and depression symptoms. Additionally, until now, no objective test data operationalizing social-emotional competencies have been included. The present study examined: 1.Whether the effects on child externalizing symptoms could be replicated; 2. If there are specific effects on child internalizing symptoms, separated for anxiety and depression; and 3. Are child clinical symptoms reflected in reductions in social-emotional competencies. A sample of 61 prenatally depressed and 143 prenatally not-depressed women and their 6–9 year old children were compared, controlling for key confounders in both the perinatal period and in middle childhood. Children of prenatally depressed mothers had more antisocial behavior and depression symptoms reported by their mothers. The prediction of antisocial behavior scores tended to be more significant for boys than for girls. Child anxiety symptoms were primarily explained by current maternal depressive symptoms. Children of prenatally depressed mothers also showed a reduction in social-emotional competencies, specifically regarding the ability to interpret complex social situations. This study showed that, even in a non-clinical sample, there are distinct effects of prenatal depression on child externalizing and internalizing symptoms which are accompanied by reductions in specific social-emotional competencies. These results emphasize that treatment for depressed pregnant women and/or early support for affected families is worthwhile. Additional work is required to identify the underlying biological mechanisms.

OBJECTIVES To analyze the influence of examiners and their experience on the quality of biometric measurements via the evolution of z scores in a longitudinal multicenter study. METHODS This retrospective study included 4607 sonographic fetal biometric examinations performed by 18 examiners at the beginning of their sonography training. To analyze the quality of biometric measurements, z scores comparing the individual measurements with the expected values from a standard population were computed. To investigate the effect of examiners and their experience, we applied a multivariable regression analysis via generalized additive mixed models. Objective To determine whether the amniotic fluid index (AFI) or the single deepest vertical pocket (SDP) technique for estimating amniotic fluid volume is superior for predicting adverse pregnancy outcome. Methods This was a multicenter randomized controlled trial including 1052 pregnant women with a term singleton pregnancy across four hospitals in Germany. Women were assigned randomly, according to a computer-generated allocation sequence, to AFI or SDP measurement for estimation of amniotic fluid volume. Oligohydramnios was defined as AFI ≤ 5 cm or the absence of a pocket measuring at least 2 × 1 cm. The diagnosis of oligohydramnios was followed by labor induction. The primary outcome measure was postpartum admission to a neonatal intensive care unit. Further outcome parameters were the rates of diagnosis of oligohydramnios and induction of labor (for oligohydramnios or without specific indication), and mode of delivery. Results Postpartum admission to a neonatal intensive care unit was similar between groups (4.2% (n = 21) vs 5.0% (n = 25); relative risk (RR), 0.85 (95% CI, 0.48–1.50); P = 0.57). In the AFI group, there were more cases of oligohydramnios (9.8% (n = 49) vs 2.2% (n = 11); RR, 4.51 (95% CI, 2.2–8.57); P < 0.01) and more cases of labor induction for oligohydramnios (12.7% (n = 33) vs 3.6% (n = 10); RR, 3.50 (95% CI, 1.76–6.96); P < 0.01) than in the SDP group. Moreover, an abnormal cardiotocography was seen more often in the AFI group than in the SDP group (32.3% (n = 161) vs 26.2% (n = 132); RR, 1.23 (95% CI, 1.02–1.50); P = 0.03). The other outcome measures were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions Use of the AFI method increased the rate of diagnosis of oligohydramnios and labor induction for oligohydramnios without improving perinatal outcome. The SDP method is therefore the favorable method to estimate amniotic fluid volume, especially in a population with many low-risk pregnancies. Copyright © 2015 ISUOG. The ability of a biomechanical simulation to produce results that can translate to real-life situations is largely dependent on the physiological accuracy of the musculoskeletal model. There are a limited number of freely-available, full-body models that exist in OpenSim, and those that do exist are very limited in terms of trunk musculature and degrees of freedom in the spine. Properly modeling the motion and musculature of the trunk is necessary to most accurately estimate lower extremity and spinal loading. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a more physiologically accurate OpenSim full-body model. By building upon three previously developed OpenSim models, the full-body lumbar spine (FBLS) model, comprised of 21 segments, 30 degrees-of-freedom, and 324 musculotendon actuators, was developed. The five lumbar vertebrae were modeled as individual bodies, and coupled constraints were implemented to describe the net motion of the spine. The eight major muscle groups of the lumbar spine were modeled (rectus abdominis, external and internal obliques, erector spinae, multifidus, quadratus lumborum, psoas major, and latissimus dorsi), and many of these muscle groups were modeled as multiple fascicles allowing the large muscles to act in multiple directions. The resulting FBLS model׳s trunk muscle geometry, maximal isometric joint moments, and simulated muscle activations compare well to experimental data. The FBLS model will be made freely available (https://simtk.org/home/fullbodylumbar) for others to perform additional analyses and develop simulations investigating full-body dynamics and contributions of the trunk muscles to dynamic tasks.

Aim: The combination of mechanical and drug procedures for the induction of labour seems to be beneficial. Accordingly, the normal procedure in clinical routine has been changed and induction of labour by means of a balloon catheter has been implemented. The aim of this study was to find out if this procedural change has resulted in a more effective induction of labour. Materials and Method: In this historical cohort study 230 inductions of labour at term in the year 2012 were compared with 291 inductions of labour in the year 2013, all at the University of Erlangen Perinatal Centre. Exclusion criteria were, among others, a multiple pregnancy, a premature rupture of membranes and a prior Caesarean section. In 2012 births were induced solely by use of the drugs dinoprostone and misoprostol, in 2013 not only with misoprostol but also mainly by use of a balloon catheter. The primary target parameter was the rate of failed labour inductions, defined as “no birth within 72 hours”. Results: Altogether 521 inductions of labour were analysed. The rate of failed inductions of labour could be reduced by the changes in induction method (first-time mothers: 23 vs. 9 %, p = 0.0059; multiparous women: 10 vs. 1 %, p = 0.0204). Furthermore, the rate of primary Caesarean sections due to failed induction of labour (5.7 vs. 1.4 %, p = 0.0064), that of the observation of green amniotic fluid (first-time mothers: 23 vs. 9 %, p = 0.0059; multiparous women: 10 vs. 1 %, p = 0.0204) and of infantile infections (first-time mothers: 23 vs. 9 %, p = 0.0059; multiparous women: 10 vs. 1 %, p = 0.0204) were all reduced as well. Conclusion: The routine use of a balloon catheter for induction of labour has markedly improved the procedure. There were fewer failed labour inductions and fewer Caesarean sections due to failed induction of labour.

To evaluate the influence of the time interval between examination and delivery on the accuracy of sonographic weight estimation (WE) in fetal macrosomia.896 singleton pregnancies (birth weight4,000 g) with a total of 1,281 sonographic weight estimations were included in this retrospective cohort study. Fetuses were divided into six groups with regard to the time interval between estimation and delivery: group 1: scan-to-delivery interval: 0 days; group 2: scan-to-delivery interval: 1-3 days; group 3: scan-to-delivery interval: 4-7 days; group 4: scan-to-delivery interval: 8-14 days; group 5: scan-to-delivery interval: 15-21 days; group 6: scan-to-delivery interval: 22-42 days. The accuracy of WE was compared between five commonly used formulas using means of percentage errors (MPE), random error, medians of absolute percentage errors (MAPE), and proportions of estimates within 10 % of actual birth weight.Significant differences were found between the time interval groups with regard to MAPE and MPE values (p0.001). All formulas showed a systematic underestimation of fetal weight (negative MPEs) (p0.05). MPE values were closest to zero in time interval group 1 and 2. From group 3 to 6, a continuous decrease was observed. The lowest MAPE was found with the Merz formula in group 1 and 2. Values increased continuously from group 3 to 6. Differences between time interval group one and three did not reach statistical significance.WE in fetal macrosomia shows the best results when examinations are performed within 7 days before delivery, using the formula of Merz et al. Accuracy significantly decreases after this time period.

Aim: Effective pain management during labour is important because pain affects the birth experience. Epidural analgesia is effective but often it may not be possible; however, inhaled analgesia offers another option. Use of inhaled nitrous oxide and oxygen for pain management in labour is well established in obstetrics but is still not used much in Germany. This study aimed to investigate the acceptance of the inhaled analgesia of inhaled nitrous oxide and oxygen by midwives and pregnant women during labour. Material and Methods: In this observational study carried out between April and September 2013, a total of 66 pregnant women received inhaled nitrous oxide and oxygen during labour on request and after prior assessment of suitability. After the birth, all of the women and the responsible midwives were interviewed about their experience and satisfaction with the inhaled analgesia. Results: A statistically significant reduction of pain was achieved with nitrous oxide and oxygen. The inhaled analgesia was mostly used by women who refused epidural analgesia. The likelihood of using inhaled nitrous oxide and oxygen again was reported as higher for patients who tolerated it well (p = 0.0129) and used it in the second stage of labour (p = 0.0003) and when bearing down (p = 0.0008). Conclusion: Inhaled nitrous oxide and oxygen is an effective method for pain management during labour and is accepted well by women in labour and by midwives.

Entsprechende Gerate sind fast uberall vorhanden, und es lasst sich bei relativ hohem Patientinnenkomfort in kurzer Zeit ein detaillierter Uberblick uber das innere Genitale gewinnen. Uterus und Ovarien unterliegen wahrend der reproduktiven Phase zyklischen Veranderungen durch die hormonelle Stimulation; dies hat ein sehr breites sonomorphologisches Spektrum an „Normalbefunden“ zur Folge. Wahrend sich der „Anfanger“ zu Beginn uber jedes „gefundene“ Ovar freut, kann es auch fur erfahrene Ultraschallanwender herausfordernd bleiben, z. B. zystische Strukturen an den Ovarien korrekt einzuordnen. Der Vorteil des Gynakologen im Vergleich zum die Computertomographie (CT)/Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) durchfuhrenden Radiologen besteht im unmittelbaren Patientenkontakt und in der Moglichkeit der Anamneseerhebung bei der Untersuchung. („Tut das weh?“) Diese Informationen durfen neben der sonomorphologischen Beschreibung in keinem Ultraschallbefund fehlen.

Consuming alcohol during pregnancy is one of the most verified prenatal risk factors for impaired child development. Information about the amount of alcohol consumed prenatally is needed to anticipate negative effects and to offer timely support. Women's self-reports are not reliable, often influenced by social stigmas and retrospective recall bias, causing biomarkers of intrauterine ethanol exposure to become more and more relevant. The present study compares both women's gestational and retrospective self-reports of prenatal alcohol consumption with levels of ethyl glucuronide (EtG) in meconium. Women (n = 180) gave self-reports of prenatal alcohol consumption both during their 3rd trimester (gestational self-report) and when their children were 6–8 years old (retrospective self-report). Child meconium was collected after birth and analyzed for EtG. No individual feedback of children's EtG level was given to the women. All analyses were run separately for two cut-offs: 10 ng/g (limit of detection) and 120 ng/g (established by Goecke et al., 2014). Mothers of children with EtG values above 10 ng/g (n = 42) tended to report prenatal alcohol consumption more frequently. There was no trend or significance for the EtG cut-off of 120 ng/g (n = 26) or for retrospective self-report. When focusing on women who retrospectively reported alcohol consumption during pregnancy, a claim to five or more consumed glasses per month made an EtG over the 10 ng/g and the 120 ng/g cut-off more probable. Women whose children were over the 10 ng/g EtG cut-off were the most inconsistent in their self-report behavior, whereas the consistency in the above 120 ng/g EtG group was higher than in any other group. The next step to establish EtG as a biomarker for intrauterine alcohol exposure is to correlate EtG values in meconium with child developmental impairments.

The phylogenetically-conserved vertebrate transcription factor, NFIB, is an orchestrator of glial differentiation in the developing mammalian central nervous system. We found NFIB expression to be reduced in glioblastoma (GBM), the commonest and most lethal primary adult brain cancer, so investigated what effect increased expression of NFIB had on GBM. Increased expression of NFIB in primary GBM cell lines induced expression of markers of glial differentiation, inhibited cell proliferation, reduced stem/progenitor cell growth, altered cell cycle progression and inhibited tumor growth in murine models of GBM. We thus identified NFIB to be a novel tumor suppressor gene in GBM.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to develop a new specific weight estimation formula for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses that differentiated between symmetric and asymmetric growth patterns. Methods A statistical estimation technique known as component-wise gradient boosting was applied to a group of 898 SGA fetuses (symmetric, n = 750; asymmetric, n = 148). A new formula was derived from the data obtained and was then compared to other commonly used equations. Results The new formula derived is as follows: estimated fetal weight = e^[1.3734627 + 0.0057133 × biparietal diameter + 0.0011282 × head circumference + 0.0201147 × abdominal circumference + 0.0183081 × femur length − 0.0000177 × biparietal diameter2 − 0.0000018 × head circumference2 − 0.0000297 × abdominal circumference2 −0.0001007 × femur length2 + 0.0397563 × I(sex = male) + 0.0064505 × gestational age (days) + 0.0096528 × I(SGA = asymmetric)], where the function I denotes an indicator function, which is 1 if the expression is fulfilled (sex = male; SGA type = asymmetric) and otherwise 0. In the whole study group and the 2 subgroups, the new formula showed the lowest median absolute percentage error, mean percentage error, and random error and the best distribution of absolute percentage errors within prespecified error bounds. Conclusions The new formula substantially improves weight estimation in SGA fetuses.

To evaluate the accuracy of intrapartum sonographic weight estimation (WE). This retrospective, cross-sectional study included 1958 singleton pregnancies. Inclusion criteria were singleton pregnancy with cephalic presentation, vaginal delivery and ultrasound examination with complete biometric parameters performed on the day of delivery during the latent or active phase of labor, and absence of chromosomal or structural anomalies. The accuracy of intrapartum WE was compared to a control group of fetuses delivered by primary cesarean section at our perinatal center and an ultrasound examination with complete biometric parameters performed within 3 days before delivery (n = 392). Otherwise, the same inclusion criteria as in the study group were applied. The accuracy of WE was compared between five commonly applied formulas using means of percentage errors (MPE), medians of absolute percentage errors (MAPE), and proportions of estimates within 10 % of actual birth weight. In the whole study group, all equations showed a systematic underestimation of fetal weight (negative MPEs). Overall, best MAPE and MPE values were found with the Hadlock II formula, using BPD, AC and FL as biometric parameters (Hadlock II, MPE: −1.28; MAPE: 6.52). MPEs differed significantly between WE in the study and control group for all evaluated formulas: in the control group, either no systematic error (Hadlock III, IV and V) or a significant overestimation (Hadlock I, II) was found. Regarding MAPEs, application of the Hadlock III (HC, AC, FL) and V (AC) formula resulted in significant lower values in the control group (Hadlock III, MAPE: 7.48 vs. 5.95, p = 0.0008 and Hadlock V, MAPE: 8.79 vs. 7.52, p = 0.0085). No significant differences were found for the other equations. A systematic underestimation of fetal weight has to be taken into account in sonographic WE performed intrapartum. Overall, the best results can be achieved with WE formulas using the BPD as the only head measurement.

Purpose: To determine the accuracy of sonographic weight estimation (WE) for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses, and to further differentiate the evaluation between symmetric and asymmetric SGA fetuses. Materials and Methods: The accuracy of WE in SGA fetuses (n = 898) was evaluated using 14 sonographic models and was further differentiated between symmetric (n = 750) and asymmetric (n = 148) SGA fetuses. SGA fetuses were considered to be asymmetric with a head circumference to abdominal circumference ratio above the 95th percentile. The accuracy of the different formulas was compared using means of percentage errors (MPE), medians of absolute percentage errors (MAPE), and proportions of estimates within 10 % of actual birth weight. Results: Results for the subgroup of asymmetric SGA fetuses differed significantly from the subgroup of symmetric SGA fetuses. MPE values were closer to zero with most of the formulas in the asymmetric SGA group. Apart from the Siemer, Shepard, Merz and Warsof equations, all formulas showed an underestimation of fetal weight in asymmetric SGA fetuses. In contrast, in the symmetric SGA group, all of the formulas commonly used for fetuses in a normal weight range showed a systematic overestimation of fetal weight. Overall the best accuracy was achieved by using the Sabbagha equation (MPE 1.7 %; SD 9.0 %; MAPE: 6.0). Conclusion: An accurate WE in SGA fetuses is feasible using the Sabbagha formula. However, one has to be aware of the significant differences in WE between symmetric and asymmetric SGA fetuses.

Purpose : The accuracy of the sonographic weight estimation (WE) of fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is significantly lower than that of fetuses without any malformations. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate the first specific sonographic weight formula for fetuses with CDH. Materials and Methods: In a retrospective, multicenter, cohort study, a statistical estimation technique known as “multivariable fractional polynomial regression” was applied to a group of 146 fetuses with CDH. Each fetus underwent an ultrasound examination with complete biometric parameters within 7 days of delivery. A new formula was derived using the obtained data and was then compared with other commonly used equations. The accuracy of the different formulas was compared using means of signed percentage errors (SPE), medians of absolute percentage errors (MAPE), and fractions of estimates within prespecified error bounds. Results: The new derived formula is: EFW = 10^(4.6729 107 371 + 0.2365 011 768 * HC + 0.2228 897 682 * FL^2 – 0.0129 895 773 * FL^3 – 1.0470 039 072 * (FL * HC)^0.5 + 0.0004 314 661 * (AC * HC) – [in case of liver herniation] 0.0062 112 122), where EFW is the estimated fetal weight, HC is the head circumference, AC is the abdominal circumference, and FL is the femur length. The new formula proved to be superior to other established equations, showing both the lowest median absolute percentage error (MAE: 6.97) and mean signed percentage error (SPE: 0.40), and the best distribution of absolute percentage errors within prespecified error bounds. Conclusion: This new formula significantly improves weight estimation in fetuses with CDH.

Pregnancies and breastfeeding are two important protective factors concerning breast cancer risk. Breast volume and breast volume changes might be a breast phenotype that could be monitored during pregnancy and breastfeeding without ionizing radiation or expensive equipment. The aim of the present study was to document changes in breast volume during pregnancy prospectively. In the prospective Clinical Gravidity Association Trial and Evaluation programme, pregnant women were followed up prospectively from gestational week 12 to birth. Three-dimensional breast surface imaging and subsequent volume assessments were performed. Factors influencing breast volume at the end of the pregnancy were assessed using linear regression models. Breast volumes averaged 420 ml at the start of pregnancy and 516 ml at the end of pregnancy. The first, second and third quartiles of the volume increase were 41, 95 and 135 ml, respectively. Breast size increased on average by 96 ml, regardless of the initial breast volume. Breast volume increases during pregnancy, but not all womens' breasts respond to pregnancy in the same way. Breast volume changes during pregnancy are an interesting phenotype that can be easily assessed in further studies to examine breast cancer risk.

The City of Ames, IA (City) processes 220 tons per day of municipal solid waste (MSW) at their Arnold O. Chantland Resource Recovery System (RRS). This facility is depicted in Figure 1. The objectives of this facility have both an economic and an environmental component: to reduce the amount of MSW that is otherwise disposed in their local landfill, thereby increasing the life of the landfill; and produce refuse-derived fuel (RDF) to reduce the amount of coal consumed at the City’s municipal electrical generating station. Objective Hypoxia is thought to induce migration in many neoplasms, often by promoting epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), but the mechanisms by which it affects brain tumor invasion is less well understood. In particular, little is known about the possible role of EMT-associated factors in hypoxia-mediated induction of migratory phenotype in gliomas. Methods Migration and invasion of GBM-derived cell lines (n=3) cultivated as spheres in serum-free media under atmospheric oxygen (21% O2) and hypoxia (1% O2) were assessed in Boyden Chamber-based in vitro assays. Digoxin was used to inhibit the HIF-1-mediated hypoxic response. The importance of the EMT-factor ZEB1 in our model was investigated by inhibiting its expression using sh-RNA delivered by lentivirus. Results Hypoxia led to a significant increase of in vitro invasion in all three neurosphere lines tested (GBM1 up to 6fold, 622 up to 3fold and over 10fold for 821; p=0.001). This was accompanied by induction of EMT effectors including ZEB1, SNAI1 and TWIST1 as compared to normoxic cultures. Digoxin-mediated inhibition of HIF1a transcription resulted in abolition of this phenomenon. Additionally, histological analysis of patient-derived GBM samples revealed an abundance of ZEB1 positive cells in hypoxic, peri-necrotic tumor areas. Strikingly, ZEB1-knockdown significantly reduced the invasive behavior of the cells. Interestingly, we also identified numerous ZEB1-postive cells in fetal neurogenic regions and migrating neuroblasts in both human and rodent brains. Furthermore, analyses of human fetal neural progenitors showed that ZEB1 expression is correlated with stem cell phenotype and established neural stem- and progenitor markers including SOX2 and NESTIN. Finally, analysis of TCGA and Rembrandt datasets identified up-regulation of EMT factors such as TWIST1, SNAI1 and SNAI2 was found in the aggressive, mesenchymal subgroup of GBM. Conclusion While malignant gliomas are not epithelial tumors, hypoxia increases the invasion capacity of GBM cells at least in part by inducing expression of EMT markers such as ZEB1. ZEB1 is also most highly expressed in the developing fetal brain in migrating stem and progenitor cells, suggesting it may play a similar role in normal development. Citation Format: Ulf D. Filters made of juniper fiber and sphagnum moss were developed and used for the removal of suspended solids and as a media for biological filtration. Estimates were made of the capacity for these filters to remove suspended solids and for biological filtration. These filters have from 400 to 7000 times more surface area per unit volume than plastic media and sand filters respectively. This large surface area per unit volume contributes to the excellent performance of fiber filters at removing fine suspended solids from the culture system as well as makes a superior substrate for the organisms that perform biological filtration. Test results at both the bench scale and with this pilot scale system indicate that plant fibers perform very well for this application. The use of plant fiber filters overcomes one of the major problems of conventional solids removal and biological filtration media. The fiber filters appear to do a superior job of removing suspended solids and have a large surface area as a substrate for the bacteria that perform biological filtration. Removal of suspended solids has been a persistent problem in aquaculture systems because the solids are very fine and buoyant. The properties of these suspended solids make them difficult to remove. The accumulation of suspended solids is the main limiting factor in the capacity of commercial recirculation aquaculture systems. Bacteria that attach to some filter media, traditionally rock, sand, or plastic perform biological filtration. At some point the bacteria/slime layer sloughs off the filter media and adds to the suspended solid load in the system. The major advantage of these low-cost plant fiber-based filters is that they can be easily and inexpensively be removed and replaced as they begin to foul. This replacement removed the accumulated suspended solids as well as the accumulated bacteria from the system. The sequential removal of filters will also help to stabilize the bacteria populations in the filtration system. The performance of the airlift pumps has been documented and was found to compare well with the theoretical model developed by Reinemann and Timmons (1989). The model can be used with confidence for the design of commercial scale facilities. Our experimental system used approximately 22% of the energy of typical state-of-the-art commercial aquaculture facilities currently being used in Wisconsin.

The complex [Cp′Co(μ-Cl)] 2 , (Cp′ = η 5 -C 5 Me 5 ), 2a , is cleaved by pyridine to yield the mononuclear, paramagnetic cobalt(II) halfsandwich compound Cp′CoCl(C 5 H 5 N), 3a . Single crystal structure determination of 3a confirms its monomeric structure in the solid state and reveals CoC bond lengths (206–209 pm) comparable to those found in decamethylcobaltocene and CoN (192 pm) and CoCl (222 pm) bond lengths shorter than in classical pyridinehalogenocobalt(II) complexes.

The time from onset of symptoms to arrival in the hospital emergency room (ER) was studied in 778 patients randomized into a study of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) size limitation. Patients at relatively high risk of death after AMI (including those with preexisting diabetes mellitus, systemic hypertension or congestive heart failure), women and older patients arrived significantly later in the ER than did patients without these characteristics. A significantly higher mortality rate was observed in patients who arrived late, i.e., those who arrived more than 2 hours after the onset of chest pain, even though patients with hemodynamic compromise (bradycardia, hypotension) tended to arrive earlier. The difference in long-term mortality between those who arrived early (within 2 hours of onset of chest pain) and those who arrived late was accounted for by the baseline differences between these 2 groups. These baseline differences may influence the effects of early interventions in AMI. In addition, these findings have implications for education of high-risk patients who could benefit the most from aggressive early intervention.

Six borabenzene derivatives of vanadium are described. Reaction of the alkali metal borinates M(C 5 H 5 BR) (M = Na, K; R = Me, Ph) with VCl 3 yields the paramagnetic, sandwich complexes V(C 5 H 5 BR) 2 . Reaction with HgCl 2 and [Na{O(CH 2 CH 2 OCH 3 ) 2 } 2 ][V(CO) 6 ] affords the tetracarbonyl compounds V(CO) 4 (C 5 H 5 BR). Upon heating in cycloheptatriene, the latter compounds produce the paramagnetic cycloheptatrienyl complexes V(C 5 H 5 BR)(C 7 H 7 ) with sandwich structures. An X-ray structural study of V(CO) 4 (C 5 H 5 BMe) shows that the V(CO) 4 fragment in the crystal is rotated by 10.4° relative to an ideal, eclipsed conformation where two CO groups are present in the plane through the B, V and C(4) atoms.
