We present the general concept of a telescope with optics and detectors mounted on two separate spacecrafts, in orbit around the telescope’s target (scopocentric or target-centric orbit), and using propulsion to maintain the Target-Optics-Detector alignment and Optics-Detector distance. Specifically, we study the case of such a telescope with the Sun as the target, orbiting at $\sim $ ∼ 1 AU. We present a simple differential acceleration budget for maintaining Target-Optics-Detector alignment and Optics-Detector distance, backed by simulations of the orbital dynamics, including solar radiation pressure and influence of the planets. Of prime interest are heliocentric orbits (such as Earth-trailing/leading orbits or Distant Retrograde Orbits), where thrust requirement to maintain formation is primarily in a single direction (either sunward or anti-sunward), can be quite minuscule (a few m/s/year), and preferably met by constant-thrust engines such as solar electric propulsion or even by solar sailing via simple extendable and/or orientable flaps or rudders.

Endothelial cell VCAM-1 regulates recruitment of lymphocytes, eosinophils, mast cells, or dendritic cells during allergic inflammation. In this report, we demonstrated that, during allergic lung responses, there was reduced zonula occludens (ZO)-1 localization in lung endothelial cell junctions, whereas there was increased lung endothelial cell expression of VCAM-1, N-cadherin, and angiomotin. In vitro, leukocyte binding to VCAM-1 reduced ZO-1 in endothelial cell junctions. Using primary human endothelial cells and mouse endothelial cell lines, Ab crosslinking of VCAM-1 increased serine phosphorylation of ZO-1 and induced dissociation of ZO-1 from endothelial cell junctions, demonstrating that VCAM-1 regulates ZO-1. Moreover, VCAM-1 induction of ZO-1 phosphorylation and loss of ZO-1 localization at cell junctions was blocked by inhibition of VCAM-1 intracellular signals that regulate leukocyte transendothelial migration, including NOX2, PKCα, and PTP1B. Furthermore, exogenous addition of the VCAM-1 signaling intermediate H2O2 (1 μM) stimulated PKCα-dependent and PTP1B-dependent serine phosphorylation of ZO-1 and loss of ZO-1 from junctions. Overexpression of ZO-1 blocked leukocyte transendothelial migration. In summary, leukocyte binding to VCAM-1 induces signals that stimulated ZO-1 serine phosphorylation and reduced ZO-1 localization at endothelial cell junctions during leukocyte transendothelial migration. VCAM-1 signaling through ROS, PKCalpha, and PTP1B induce serine phosphorylation of ZO-1 and loss of ZO-1 from endothelial cell junctions during VCAM-1-dependent leukocyte transendothelial migration.

It is common practice nowadays to derive spins and 3D shapes of asteroids from the inversion of photometric light curves. However, this method requires a good number of photometric points and dedicated observing sessions. On the other hand, the photometric observations carried out by the Gaia mission will be sparse and their number relatively small. For this reason, a multi-parametric shape described by a large number of elementary facets cannot probably be derived from Gaia data alone. Therefore, the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC), implemented a simpler solution as an unattended data reduction pipeline which relies on three axial ellipsoids for the shape representation. However, overall accuracy of such triaxial shape solutions has to be assessed. How adequate is an ellipsoidal approximation to represent the overall properties of an irregular body? Which error is made on the volume in comparison a more accurate model with irregular shape? To answer these questions, we have implemented numerical procedures for comparing ellipsoids to more complex and irregular shapes, and we performed a full simulation of the photometric signal from these objects, using both shape representations. Implementing the same software algorithm that will be used for the analysis of Gaia asteroid photometry, rotation period, spin axis orientation and ellipsoidal shape were derived from simulated observations of selected Main Belt asteroids assuming a geometric scattering model (work is in progress for more complex scattering models). We found that the ellipsoids by photometry inversion are closely similar to the best-fitting ellipsoids of the simulated complex shapes and that the error on the asteroid volume (relative to a complex shape) is generally low, usually around $10\%$., 9 pages, 5 figures

Clinical reports indicate that patients with allergy/asthma commonly have associated symptoms of anxiety/depression. Anxiety/depression can be reduced by 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) supplementation. However, it is not known whether 5-HTP reduces allergic inflammation. Therefore, we determined whether 5-HTP supplementation reduces allergic inflammation. We also determined whether 5-HTP decreases passage of leukocytes through the endothelial barrier by regulating endothelial cell function. For these studies, C57BL/6 mice were supplemented with 5-HTP, treated with ovalbumin fraction V (OVA), house dust mite (HDM) extract, or IL-4, and examined for allergic lung inflammation and OVA-induced airway responsiveness. To determine whether 5-HTP reduces leukocyte or eosinophil transendothelial migration, endothelial cells were pretreated with 5-HTP, washed and then used in an in vitro transendothelial migration assay under laminar flow. Interestingly, 5-HTP reduced allergic lung inflammation by 70–90% and reduced antigen-induced airway responsiveness without affecting body weight, blood eosinophils, cytokines, or chemokines. 5-HTP reduced allergen-induced transglutaminase 2 (TG2) expression and serotonylation (serotonin conjugation to proteins) in lung endothelial cells. Consistent with the regulation of endothelial serotonylation in vivo, in vitro pretreatment of endothelial cells with 5-HTP reduced TNF-α-induced endothelial cell serotonylation and reduced leukocyte transendothelial migration. Furthermore, eosinophil and leukocyte transendothelial migration was reduced by inhibitors of transglutaminase and by inhibition of endothelial cell serotonin synthesis, suggesting that endothelial cell serotonylation is key for leukocyte transendothelial migration. In summary, 5-HTP supplementation inhibits endothelial serotonylation, leukocyte recruitment, and allergic inflammation. These data identify novel potential targets for intervention in allergy/asthma.

We present a detailed analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC454E, belonging to the interacting system NGC454. Observations performed with Suzaku, XMMNewton and Swift allowed us to detect a dramatic change in the curvature of the 2‐10 keV spectrum, revealing a significant variation of the absorbin g column density along the line of sight (from � 1 × 10 24 cm 2 to � 1 × 10 23 cm 2 ). Consequently, we propose this source as a new member of the class of “changing look” AGN, i.e. AGN that have been observed both in Compton-thin (NH=10 23 cm 2 ) and reflection dominated states (Comptonthick, NH> 10 24 cm 2 ). Due to the quite long time lag (6 months) between the Suzaku and XMM-Newton observations we cannot infer the possible location of the obscuring material causing the observed variability. In the 6‐7 keV range the XMM-Newton observation also shows a clear signature of the presence of an ionized absorber. Since this feature is not detected during the Suzaku observation (despite its detectability), the simplest int erpretation is that the ionized absorber is also variable; its location is e stimated to be within � 10 3 pc from the central black hole, probably much closer in than the rather neutral absorber.

Objective To evaluate the in-hospital resource consumption and to estimate the costs of patients treated with percutaneous coronary angioplasty at 6 months from the procedure.

We investigate the results of recently published experiments on the quantum behavior of Josephson circuits in terms of the classical modelling based on the resistively and capacitively-shunted (RCSJ) junction model. Our analysis shows evidence for a close analogy between the nonlinear behavior of a pulsed microwave-driven Josephson junction at low temperature and low dissipation and the experimental observations reported for the Josephson circuits. Specifically, we demonstrate that Rabi-oscillations, Ramsey-fringes, and spin-echo observations are not phenomena with a unique quantum interpretation. In fact, they are natural consequences of transients to phase-locking in classical nonlinear dynamics and can be observed in a purely classical model of a Josephson junction when the experimental recipe for the application of microwaves is followed and the experimental detection scheme followed. We therefore conclude that classical nonlinear dynamics can contribute to the understanding of relevant experimental observations of Josephson response to various microwave perturbations at very low temperature and low dissipation., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

INTRODUCTION Exposure to secondhand smoke has immediate adverse respiratory and cardiovascular effects. A growing body of literature examining health trends following the implementation of public smoking bans has demonstrated reductions in the rates of myocardial infarction and stroke, but there has been no extensive work examining asthma hospitalizations. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the Michigan Smoke-Free Air Law (SFA law) on the rate of asthma hospitalizations among adults in Michigan and to determine any differential effects by race or sex. METHODS Data on adult asthma hospitalizations were obtained from the Michigan Inpatient Database (MIDB). Poisson regression was used to model relative risks for asthma hospitalization following the SFA law with adjustments for sex, race, age, insurance type, and month of year. Race-based and sex-based analyses were performed. RESULTS In the first year following implementation of the SFA law, adjusted adult asthma hospitalization rates decreased 8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 7%-10%; P < .001). While asthma hospitalization rates for both blacks and whites declined in the 12 months following implementation of the SFA law, blacks were 3% more likely to be hospitalized for asthma than whites (95% CI, 0%-7%; P = .04). The rate of decline in adult asthma hospitalizations did not differ by sex. CONCLUSION The implementation of the SFA law was associated with a reduction in adult asthma hospitalization rates, with a greater decrease in hospitalization rates for whites compared with blacks. These results demonstrate that the SFA law is protecting the public's health and saving health care costs.

Background: The overuse of antimicrobials is one of the main factors responsible for the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance, together with other causes, such as intra- and inter-hospital spread of resistant microorganisms and infection control policies and practices. The objective of the present study is to report the trends of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii antimicrobial resistance indicators in an Italian intensive care unit (ICU) during a six-year period, from 2008 to 2013. Methods: Susceptibility data and annual antibiotic consumptions in the ICU were retrospectively obtained from the clinical laboratory and the pharmacy. Trends over time of resistance rates (RRs) and of incidence densities of resistant isolates were determined by linear regression. Results: Isolation density of A. baumannii increased significantly from 2008 (20.4 per 1,000 patient-days) to 2013 (58.1 per 1,000 patient-days) and of K. pneumoniae from 2010 (22.3 per 1,000 patient-days) to 2013 (55.9 per 1,000 patient-days). RRs of third-generation cephalosporins (3GCs)-resistant K. pneumoniae (from 2010: 41.9 %, to 2012: 87.0 %), of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (from 2008: 0 %, to 2013: 59.2 %), and of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (from 2008: 87.5 %, to 2013: 96.6 %) showed significant increasing trends. Carbapenems was the main antibiotic class consumed (24.9 % of the total antimicrobial usage density), followed by 3GCs (21.0 %), fluoroquinolones (20.6 %), aminoglycosides (17.3 %), penicillins (15.1 %) and glycopeptides (1.1 %). Carbapenems consumption decreased from 2008 to 2012 and then increased in 2013. Glycopeptides consumption decreased from 2008 to 2011 and then increased in 2013. Aminoglycosides consumption decreased from 2008 to 2010 and increased from 2012 to 2013. Finally, 3GC, penicillins and fluoroquinolones consumptions decreased from 2012 to 2013. Conclusions: RRs of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii and of carbapenem- and 3GC-resistant K. pneumoniae were higher than those for Europe. Our findings highlight the necessity to implement an integrated system for monitoring not only consumption of antibiotics and resistance profiles but also the clonality of alert microorganisms in the ICU for effective infection control. © 2015 Agodi et al.

With the increasing number of manmade object orbiting Earth, the probability for close encounters or on-orbit collisions is of great concern to spacecraft operators. The presence of debris clouds from various disintegration events amplifies these concerns, especially in lowEarth orbits. The University of California, Berkeley currently operates seven NASA spacecraft in various orbit regimes around the Earth and the Moon, and actively participates in collision avoidance operations. NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory provide conjunction analyses. In two cases, collision avoidance operations were executed to reduce the risks of on-orbit collisions. With one of the Earth orbiting THEMIS spacecraft, a small thrust maneuver was executed to increase the miss distance for a predicted close conjunction. For the NuSTAR observatory, an attitude maneuver was executed to minimize the cross section with respect to a particular conjunction geometry. Operations for these two events are presented as case studies. A number of experiences and lessons learned are included.

THEMIS, a constellation of five spacecraft, referred to as probes, was launched in 2007 to study the physical processes leading to the aurora. In 2009, THEMIS successfully completed its primary mission phase. As an ambitious mission extension, the constellation was then split into two new missions - THEMIS-Low and ARTEMIS. THEMIS-Low refers to three of the five probes that continued magnetospheric observations in Earth orbits while the remaining two probes started a new lunar mission called ARTEMIS. The two ARTEMIS probes were transferred from Earth to lunar orbits via low-energy trajectories with Earth and lunar gravity assists. The complex mission design and navigation operations took the two probes on trajectories along weak stability boundary manifolds, venturing out as far as 1,500,000 km and 1,200,000 km from Earth, respectively. Upon arrival in the lunar environment, both probes were first inserted into libration point orbits where they spent up to ten months collecting science data. Periodic stationkeeping maneuvers were executed to ensure the two probes would not be ejected from these unstable orbits. In 2011, both probes were successfully inserted into stable, retrograde and prograde lunar orbits, respectively. We report on the challenges with executing the complex navigation plans, discuss experiences and lessons learned from operating two spacecraft in lunar libration point orbits for the first time ever, and finally cover mission planning and science operations in the lunar environment.

We study the link between the X-ray emission in radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGN) and the accretion rate on the central supermassive black hole using a statistically well-defined and representative sample of 71 type 1 AGN extracted from the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey. We search and quantify the statistical correlations between some fundamental parameters that characterize the X-ray emission, i.e. the X-ray spectral slope, Γ, and the X-ray'loudness', and the accretion rate, both absolute (Ṁ) and normalized to the Eddington luminosity(Eddington ratio, λ).We parametrize the X-ray loudness using three different quantities: the bolometric correction Kbol, the two-point spectral index αOX and the disc/corona luminosity ratio. We find that the X-ray spectral index depends on the normalized accretion rate while the 'X-ray loudness' depends on both the normalized and the absolute accretion rate. The dependence on the Eddington ratio, in particular, is probably induced by the Γ- λ correlation. The two proxies usually adopted in the literature to quantify the X-ray loudness of an AGN, i.e. Kbol and αOX, behave differently, with Kbol being more sensitive to the Eddington ratio and aOX having a stronger dependence with the absolute accretion. The explanation of this result is likely related to the different sensitivity of the two parameters to the X-ray spectral index., The authors acknowledge financial support from ASI (grant n. We present the results of the analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 Mrk 348, observed by Suzaku and XMM-Newton. The overall spectrum of Mrk 348 can be described by a primary power law continuum seen through three layers of absorption, of which one is neutral and two are ionised. Comparing Suzaku (2008) and XMM-Newton (2002) observations we find variability of the X-ray spectral curvature. We suggest that the variability can be explained through the change of column density of both the neutral and one of the ionised absorbers, together with a variation of the ionisation level of the same absorber. We thus confirm one of the main features presented in past works, where intrinsic column density variability up to $\sim 10^{23}$~cm$^{-2}$ was observed on time scales of months. We also find that the photon index of the underlying power law continuum ($\Gamma \sim 1.8$) is in agreement with the previous observations of this Seyfert 2., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

[Aims]: We derive masses of the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) and accretion rates for 154 type 1 AGN belonging to a well-defined X-ray-selected sample, the XMM-Newton serendipitous sample (XBS). [Methods]: We used the most recent “single-epoch” relations, based on Hβ and MgIIλ2798 Å emission lines, to derive the SMBH masses. We then used the bolometric luminosities, computed on the basis of an SED-fitting procedure, to calculate the accretion rates, both absolute and normalized to the Eddington luminosity (Eddington ratio). [Results]: The selected AGNs cover a range of masses from 107 to 1010 M⊙ with a peak around 8 × 108 M⊙ and a range of accretion rates from 0.01 to ~50 M⊙/year (assuming an efficiency of 0.1), with a peak at ~1 M⊙/year. Vascular adhesion molecules regulate the migration of leukocytes from the blood into tissue during inflammation. Binding of leukocytes to vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) activates signals in endothelial cells, including Rac1 and calcium fluxes. These VCAM-1 signals are required for leukocyte transendothelial migration on VCAM-1. However, it has not been reported whether the cytoplasmic domain of VCAM-1 is necessary for these signals. Interestingly, the 19-amino acid sequence of the VCAM-1 cytoplasmic domain is 100% conserved among many mammalian species, suggesting an important functional role for the domain. To examine the function of the VCAM-1 cytoplasmic domain, we deleted the VCAM-1 cytoplasmic domain or mutated the cytoplasmic domain at amino acid N724, S728, Y729, S730, or S737. The cytoplasmic domain and S728, Y729, S730, or S737 were necessary for leukocyte transendothelial migration. S728 and Y729, but not S730 or S737, were necessary for VCAM-1 activation of calcium fluxes. In contrast, S730 and S737, but not S728 or Y729, were necessary for VCAM-1 activation of Rac1. These functional data are consistent with our computational model of the structure of the VCAM-1 cytoplasmic domain as an α-helix with S728 and Y729, and S730 and S737, on opposite sides of the α-helix. Together, these data indicate that S728 and Y729, and S730 and S737, are distinct functional sites that coordinate VCAM-1 activation of calcium fluxes and Rac1 during leukocyte transendothelial migration.

A prototype three‐mode gravitational wave antenna which employs a two‐mode torsional transducer has been constructed and tested. For the torsional transducer the coupling from one stage to the next is via inertial forces, whereas in a conventional transducer the stage‐to‐stage coupling is proportional to the relative displacements via the springs. Experiments with our antenna‐torsional transducer prototype demonstrate a maximum antenna bandwidth of 260 Hz (29% of the antenna resonant frequency of 900 Hz) and a mechanical amplification factor of 40. A mathematical model for the three‐mode antenna has been developed and predictions of the system transfer functions and transient response are in close agreement with the measurements. Through the optimization of the transducer parameters we find that maximum fractional antenna bandwidths near 30% may be simultaneously achieved with mechanical amplification factors of 100 or more. The endothelium is immunoregulatory in that inhibiting the function of vascular adhesion molecules blocks leukocyte recruitment and thus tissue inflammation. The function of endothelial cells during leukocyte recruitment is regulated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants. In inflammatory sites and lymph nodes, the endothelium is stimulated to express adhesion molecules that mediate leukocyte binding. Upon leukocyte binding, these adhesion molecules activate endothelial cell signal transduction that then alters endothelial cell shape for the opening of passageways through which leukocytes can migrate. If the stimulation of this opening is blocked, inflammation is blocked. In this review, we focus on the endothelial cell adhesion molecule, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). Expression of VCAM-1 is induced on endothelial cells during inflammatory diseases by several mediators, including ROS. Then, VCAM-1 on the endothelium functions as both a scaffold for leukocyte migration and a trigger of endothelial signaling through NADPH oxidase-generated ROS. These ROS induce signals for the opening of intercellular passageways through which leukocytes migrate. In several inflammatory diseases, inflammation is blocked by inhibition of leukocyte binding to VCAM-1 or by inhibition of VCAM-1 signal transduction. VCAM-1 signal transduction and VCAM-1-dependent inflammation are blocked by antioxidants. Thus, VCAM-1 signaling is a target for intervention by pharmacological agents and by antioxidants during inflammatory diseases. We provide an alternative interpretation of experimental results that were represented as demonstrating entanglement between two macroscopic quantum Josephson oscillators. We model the experimental system using the well-established classical equivalent circuit of a resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junction. Simulation results are used to generate the corresponding density matrix which shows features quite similar to the previously published matrix generated from experimental data. Since our data are generated by a classical model, we therefore submit that state tomography cannot be used to determine absolutely whether or not quantum entanglement has taken place. Analytical arguments are given for why the classical analysis provides an adequate explanation of the experimental results.

We describe the development and details of in-flight calibration techniques used to obtain the required degree of accuracy for mission-required, small-scale trajectory adjustments. Using the dynamics data gathered from dozens of orbital-adjustment maneuvers previously conducted on the ARTEMIS and THEMIS spacecraft, the Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) Flight Dynamics group has systematized a calibration process employing hill-climbing and grid searches for single segment and multi-segment maneuvers, respectively. This effort has resulted in the characterization of a nonlinear function of thruster performance scale factors and offsets to use in NASA Goddard’s GMAN software package for maneuver planning and reconstruction. To date, use of these factors has greatly reduced deviations between predicted and observed orbital state vector solutions and spinrate changes following a sequence of orbit-raising maneuvers intended to result in a lunar gravitational capture of the ARTEMIS probes in early 2010.

THEMIS – a NASA Medium Explorer (MIDEX) mission – is a five-spacecraft constellation launched in February 2007 to study magnetospheric phenomena leading to the aurora borealis. During the primary mission phase, completed in the summer of 2009, all five spacecraft collected science data in synchronized, highly elliptical Earth orbits. Both mission design and efficient navigation and flight operations during the primary mission resulted in appreciable fuel reserves. Therefore, an ambitious mission extension, ARTEMIS, became feasible. ARTEMIS involves transferring the outer two spacecraft from Earth to lunar orbits where they will conduct measurements of the Moon’s interaction with the solar wind and its crustal magnetic fields. Earth departure of these two spacecraft is accomplished by successively raising the apogees of their orbits until lunar perturbations become the dominant forces significantly altering their trajectories. This orbit raise sequence requires over forty maneuvering events, with multiple lunar approaches and fly-bys, before setting the two spacecraft on low-energy transfer trajectories to lunar orbit in February and March 2010. This paper addresses overcoming the navigation and operational challenges presented by the ARTEMIS mission, consisting of two spacecraft that were not designed to leave Earth orbits.

THEMIS is a five-spacecraft constellation launched in 2007 to study magnetospheric phenomena leading to the aurora borealis. During the primary mission phase, completed in the fall of 2009, all five spacecraft collected science data in synchronized, highly elliptical Earth orbits. For an ambitious mission extension, the Project proposed to split the constellation into two parts - THEMIS-Low and ARTEMIS. THEMIS-Low includes the three spacecraft on the inner orbits with approximately one-day periods, continuing their study of the magnetosphere in a tighter formation. ARTEMIS involves transferring the outer two spacecraft from their Earth orbits with two and four-day periods into lunar orbits to conduct measurements of the interaction of the Moon with the solar wind and of crustal magnetic fields. This transfer was initiated on July 21, 2009 and follows low-energy trajectories with Earth and lunar gravity assists. The THEMIS mission is controlled from the highly automated multi-mission operations center at the University of California, Berkeley and was originally designed to be supported by 11-m class ground stations and NASA's Space Network. To increase the telemetry bandwidth for science data return at lunar distances, the mission network was expanded to also include the 34-m subnet of NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN). This paper discusses all aspects of the process to seamlessly integrate the new DSN interfaces into the THEMIS/ARTEMIS mission control network, and describes challenges and lessons learned with the implementation of real-time telemetry and command data transfer using the CCSDS Space Link Extension protocol. It also includes on-orbit characterization of the transponder ranging channels, orbit determination results using two-way Doppler and range data from a combination of conventional ground stations and DSN stations, as well as pass scheduling via the DSN Resource Allocation Planning Service and via automated, electronic data exchanges. All of these tasks were accomplished within a compressed schedule of one year, with very limited staffing resources, and on a tight budget.

We present an analytical and computational study of resonances and transient responses in a classical Josephson junction system. A theoretical basis for resonances in a superconducting loop with three junctions is presented, outlining both the direct relationship between the dynamics of single- and multi-junction systems, and the direct relationships between observations of the classical counterparts to Rabi oscillations, Ramsey fringes, and spin echo oscillations in this class of systems. We show simulations data along with analytical analyses of the classical model, and the results are related to previously reported experiments conducted on three junction loops. We further investigate the effect of off-resonant microwave perturbations to, e.g., the Rabi-type response of the Josephson system, and we relate this response back to the nonlinear and multi-valued resonance behavior previously reported for a single Josephson junction. The close relationships between single and multi-junction behavior demonstrates the underlying dynamical mechanism for a whole class of classical counterparts to expected quantum mechanical observations in a variety of systems; namely the resonant and transient behavior of a particle in an anharmonic potential well with subsequent escape., Comment: 11 pages, seven figures

An electrical circuit consisting of two capacitively coupled inductive loops, each interrupted by a Josephson junction, is analyzed through the classical RSCJ model. The same circuit has recently been studied experimentally and the results were used to demonstrate quantum mechanical entanglement in the system by observing the correlated states of the two inductive loops after initial microwave perturbations. Our classical analysis shows that the observed phenomenon exists entirely within the classical RSCJ model, and we provide a detailed intuitive description of the transient dynamics responsible for the observations., Comment: Five pages, four figures

A hybrid gene consisting of the sequences coding for the signal peptide of human growth hormone and the mature form of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) was chemically synthesized. This sequence was inserted into a eukaryotic expression vector and introduced into Chinese hamster ovary cells. The resulting stably transformed cell lines produced large amounts of recombinant IL-1 beta, which was secreted into the culture medium mainly as a 22-kDa form. Expression in the presence of tunicamycin, an inhibitor of N-glycosylation, led to the complete disappearance of the 22-kDa form and the appearance of a new form of 17.5 kDa, indicating that the hybrid protein had been both processed and N-glycosylated. However, transformed cells producing mature IL-1 beta without a signal peptide produced the predicted 17.5-kDa nonglycosylated form. These results suggest that fusion to a heterologous leader sequence allowed IL-1 beta to be translocated across the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum and to be transported and secreted by the exocytotic pathway.

A synthetic gene coding for the C-terminal 153 amino acids of the human interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) was used to produce large quantities of recombinant IL-1 beta in Escherichia coli. The expression of the synthetic gene was under the control of an inducible promoter. The recombinant protein was released from the cells by an osmotic shock. This procedure did not lyse the cells. The IL-1 beta that represented 90% of the total extracted protein was purified to homogeneity by a single chromatographic step. Sequence analysis revealed a heterogeneous N-terminal sequence resulting from the cleavage of the N-terminal methionine in 50% of the molecules and of both the N-terminal methionine and alanine in the other 50%. This recombinant IL-1 beta had a specific activity of 1.3 x 10(8) international units per mg.

We present evidence for a close analogy between the nonlinear behavior of a pulsed microwave-driven Josephson junction at low temperature and the experimentally observed behavior of Josephson systems operated below the quantum transition temperature under similar conditions. We specifically address observations of Ramsey-type fringe oscillations, which can be understood in classical nonlinear dynamics as results of slow transient oscillations in a pulsed microwave environment. Simulations are conducted to mimic experimental measurements by recording the statistics of microwave-induced escape events from the anharmonic potential well of a zero-voltage state. The properties of the activation potential of a Josephson interferometer are investigated under the effect of external microwave signals. In particular, we measure the effects of the microwaves on an interferometer having a low inductance. Using as a probing tool thermal escape techniques we find that the plasma frequency excitations of this system when exposed to the radiation field are well described by a double-pendulum equation under the same ac biasing conditions. We present a classical analysis of the transient response of Josephson junctions perturbed by microwaves and thermal fluctuations. The results include a specific low frequency modulation in phase and amplitude behavior of a junction in its zero-voltage state. This transient modulation frequency is linked directly to an observed variation in the probability for the system to switch to its non-zero voltage state. Complementing previous work on linking classical analysis to the experimental observations of Rabi-oscillations, this expanded perturbation method also provides closed form analytical results for attenuation of the modulations and the Rabi-type oscillation frequency. Results of perturbation analysis are compared directly (and quantitatively) to numerical simulations of the classical model as well as published experimental data, suggesting that transients to phase-locking are closely related to the observed oscillations., 18 pages total, 8 figures (typos corrected; minor revisions to figures and equations)

Wavefront-guided laser eye surgery has been recently introduced and holds the promise of correcting not only defocus and astigmatism in patients but also higher-order aberrations. Research is just beginning on the implementation of wavefront-guided methods in optical solutions, such as phase-plate-based spectacles, as alternatives to surgery. We investigate the theoretical differences between the implementation of wavefront-guided surgical and phase plate corrections. The residual aberrations of 43 model eyes are calculated after simulated refractive surgery and also after a phase plate is placed in front of the untreated eye. In each case, the current wavefront-guided paradigm that applies a direct map of the ocular aberrations to the correction zone is used. The simulation results demonstrate that an ablation map that is a Zernike fit of a direct transform of the ocular wavefront phase error is not as efficient in correcting refractive errors of sphere, cylinder, spherical aberration, and coma as when the same Zernike coefficients are applied to a phase plate, with statistically significant improvements from 2% to 6%.

This research project investigates the specifications of phase modulators for the treatment of presbyopia (accommodation loss). Correction of presbyopia is simulated using a pixilated phase modulator directly in front of a human eye model. The results show that maximal phase modulation depth of 17.5l (550nm) is required for a 2 Diopter change in a 6 mm pupil. The same phase retardation provides 7 Diopters of correction for a 3 mm pupil as opposed to 1.2 Diopters for 8 mm pupil. The impact of diffraction due to pixelation of the phase array on image quality is measured using encircled energy, where a well-focused point is defined as having 75% of its energy within a 15 mm radius. For a 2 Diopter correction in a 6 mm pupil, pixelation effects are important at low pixel density and decrease asymptotically with increasing density, stabilizing at about 51 x 51 pixels. In smaller pupils, the equivalent optical correction requires less pixel density to provide equal image quality. In conclusion, a phase modulator with a maximal phase change of 17.5l and 64 x 64 pixels could provide up to 2 Diopters of accommodation in a 6 mm pupil and significantly more in a smaller pupil, thus providing an excellent correction.

The view of the intracranial system as a rigid and closed box has been criticised by many authors who take into account the possibility of a certain degree of elastic bulk accommodation, mainly in the spinal sac. In nine patients, who underwent decompressive craniectomy for treatment of life-threatening intracranial hypertension, when the clinical conditions improved, just before cranioplasty, the blood flow velocities at middle cerebral artery (MCA) and at superior sagittal sinus (SSS) level were simultaneously recorded. The measurements were repeated after cranioplasty. The blood flow velocity recorded from SSS in craniectomized patients appeared flat, without evident pulsation; after cranioplasty a clear-cut pulsatile wave became again evident. The disappearance of a pulsatile shape in the blood flow velocity recorded from the SSS when the intracranial system was "open" and the reappearance of a pulsatile blood flow waveform after the "closure" of the skull confirm that the venous bed acts as a bulk compensatory system in order to maintain the intracranial volume absolutely constant.
