Since most of the shallow gas is composed of methane, studies on its availability as a resource and global warming are being conducted. A gas flare is called a phenomenon in which shallow gas escapes from the sub-bottom into the seawater. Gas flares cause seafloor deformation and can trigger large-scale geohazards such as landslides and tsunamis. We discovered the gas flares in 2021 and 2022 by conducting seismic and acoustic surveys using R/V TamaheⅡ seismic vessel at the southeastern continental shelf of the East Sea in Korea. The gas flares were detected on the water column data obtained by an EK60 of 38 kHz frequency and a multi-beam echo sounder of 20 – 40 kHz frequency bands (Kongsberg EM2040). We observed the deformation of the seafloor and sub-bottom using a Chirp sub-bottom profiler (SBP) of 2 – 7 kHz frequency bands (FalMouth HMS-622 CHIRPceiver). The water depth of the survey area ranges from 130 to 140 m. Four gas flares are distributed within approximately 3.5 km in a northwest-southeast direction. The height of the gas flare is about a maximum of 100 m from the seafloor. The seafloor where the gas escaped was observed to deform into dome shapes and pockmark. Additionally, we performed the seismic survey using a 60 in3 mini GI gun and a 48-channel streamer cable with a 12.5 m group interval to detect the source layer of shallow gas and the migration pathways. We tried using VBALab software to quantify the gas flow rate on the acoustic data of EK60.

To evaluate the outcomes of surgical treatment of refractory vasoproliferative retinal tumors (VPTs) and its complications.Clinical charts of all patients diagnosed with VPTs who underwent surgical treatment from 2005 to 2020 were reviewed. Clinical features, surgical techniques, and outcomes were evaluated.From 25 eyes of 23 patients with VPTs, 17 (68%) eyes underwent surgical intervention to treat tumor activity and associated complications including epiretinal membrane (n = 10, 59%), retinal detachment (n = 8, 47%), and vitreous hemorrhage (n = 3, 18%). All eyes underwent pars plana vitrectomy with endolaser/cryotherapy to control tumor activity and to treat associated complications. Three cases required tumor resection. At the end of follow-up (mean 55.4 months, range 2-305 months), no eye presented tumor activity or retinal detachment after one or two surgeries. There was no epiretinal membrane recurrence. The mean baseline best-corrected visual acuity was 1.2 ± 0.7 logMAR, and the mean final best-corrected visual acuity was 0.7 ± 0.6 logMAR ( P0.05). The best-corrected visual acuity improved two or more lines in 12 (70.5%) eyes at the end of follow-up.In this series of patients with large active VPTs, surgical intervention allowed control of the tumor activity in all patients and provided overall satisfactory anatomic and functional outcomes.

The flow structure of a brittle crustal volume is defined by the multi-scale geometric and hydraulic properties of its fracture meshes. The length density distribution n(L,l) and the transmissivity distribution K(L,l) control the hydrologic scaling, where l is fracture length and L is the system size. The flow structure might display at most three key hydrologic scales: the connection scale, above which flow is focused in few critical paths; the channeling scale, above which flow is distributed in several paths; and the homogenization scale, above which permeability approaches a constant value. According to these scales, the hydrological structure could be distributed or clustered, thus having a clear impact in geothermal exploration campaigns and reservoir modeling. In this work, we determine the multi-scale flow structure for the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault System (LOFS) and the Andean Transverse Faults (ATF) in the Southern Andes, by establishing the hydrologic scaling they follow. Using fractal statistics, we integrated geological data at the regional, meso‑ and micro-scale, including image analysis from X-ray microtomography. Our results suggest a self-similar, dense network with n(L,l)∼l-a and a = 2.6-2.9, from the regional scale where the LOFS and ATF interact to the meso‑ and micro-scale within highly fractured areas of the LOFS. Scaling models are constrained by the length distribution, and other power-law functions reflecting the geometric arrangement of fractures, as well as the spatial distribution of superficial geothermal occurrences. Thus, we expect the hydrologic scaling to depend on the transmissivity distribution. Lognormal transmissivity distribution yields a permeability increase with scale, from the connection to the homogenization scales; whereas power-law transmissivity distribution yields a permeability increase from the connection scale without a limiting value. Approximations of the connection scale are around 10-3-100 m; the channeling scale, around 100-104 m; and if the homogenization scale exists, it should be equal or greater than 103-104 m. Finally, the results presented here could to define the internal architecture of fracture meshes in fault-controlled fluid flow, and be used to select an appropriate hydrologic model according to the analyzed scale. Therefore, these findings must be taken into consideration in future geothermal prospecting, modeling and exploitation.

Se presenta el caso de un varón de 45 años, asintomático, con gran sobrecarga de cavidades derechas al que se detecta una CIA de gran tamaño. Debido a su gran tamaño y la ausencia de bordes suficientes, es dificultosa la clasificación del tipo de defecto, revisando el diagnóstico diferencial con el tipo seno venoso inferior. Se discuten también las dificultades de valoración no invasiva de la presión pulmonar ante un reflujo tricúspide de escasa magnitud y pobre representación espectral.

Large reservoirs of methane present in Arctic marine sediments are susceptible to rapid warming, promoting increasing methane emissions. Gas bubbles in the water column can be detected, and flow rates can be quantified using hydroacoustic survey methods, making it possible to monitor spatiotemporal variability. We present methane (CH4) bubble flow rates derived from hydroacoustic data sets acquired during 11 research expeditions to the western Svalbard continental margin (2008-2014). Three seepage areas emit in total 725-1,125 t CH4/year, and bubble fluxes are up to 2 kg.m(-2).year (-1). Bubble fluxes vary between different surveys, but no clear trend can be identified. Flux variability analyses suggest that two areas are geologically interconnected, displaying alternating flow changes. Spatial migration of bubble seepage was observed to follow seasonal changes in the theoretical landward limit of the hydrate stability zone, suggesting that formation/dissociation of shallow hydrates, modulated by bottom water temperatures, influences seafloor bubble release. Plain Language Summary It has been speculated that the release of methane (a potent greenhouse gas) from the seafloor in some Arctic Ocean regions is triggered by warming seawater. Emissions of gas bubbles from the seafloor can be detected by ship-mounted sonars. In 2008, a methane seepage area west of Svalbard was hydroacoustically detected for the first time. This seepage was hypothesized to be caused by dissociation of hydrates (ice-like crystals consisting of methane and water) due to ocean warming. We present an analysis of sonar data from 11 surveys conducted between 2008 and 2014. This study is the first comparison of methane seepage-related hydroacoustic data over such a long period. The hydroacoustic mapping and quantification method allowed us to assess the locations and intensity of gas bubble release, and how these parameters change over time, providing necessary data for numerical flux and climate models. No trend of increasing gas flow was identified. However, we observed seasonal variations potentially controlled by seasonal formation and dissociation of shallow hydrates. The hydrate formation/dissociation process is likely controlled by changes of bottom water temperatures. Alternating gas emissions between two neighboring areas indicate the existence of fluid pathway networks within the sediments.

Magnetic proxies for paleoclimate are tools widely used to understand climate variability, yet current proxies focus on loess-derived soils in humid to temperate climate zones, whereas coarse-grained sediments in arid-hyperarid climate zones remain poorly investigated. To test the potential paleoclimatic-environmental significance of the magnetic record of coarse-grained sediments deposited in a region with a mean annual precipitation (MAP)

Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of vitreomacular adhesion (VMA) release after anti-VEGF therapy for the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME) and to evaluate further changes in outcome. Methods This was a retrospective study that enrolled 66 eyes of 66 patients with DME who presented with VMA diagnosed by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) at baseline. VMA was classified as focal (attachment: ≤ 1500 μm) or broad (attachment: > 1500 μm). All patients received at least three monthly intravitreal injections of an anti-VEGF agent. Follow-up visits were performed 1 month after each injection to evaluate the incidence of VMA release. Results The mean patient age was 61.4 years (range: 29 to 78 years), and 72.7 % were male. The mean best-corrected visual acuity was 0.62 logMAR, and the mean central retinal thickness (CRT) was 473 μm at baseline. The mean length of follow-up was 18.5 months, and the mean number of injections was 5.8. The intravitreal drugs used were aflibercept (40.9 %), ranibizumab (37.9 %) and bevacizumab (21.2 %). Forty-seven eyes had broad VMA, and 19 had focal VMA. Twenty-two eyes (33.3 %) developed VMA release following a mean of 5.7 injections (range: 3–13). Sixteen eyes (72.7 %) with focal VMA and 6 eyes (27.3 %) with broad VMA at baseline developed VMA release. Twenty-one eyes that developed VMA release showed an improvement in CRT following VMA release (mean: -106 μm; range: 22 to 289 μm). Conclusions VMA release occurs in approximately 1/3 of patients with DME following anti-VEGF therapy. Most of them show a short-term decrease in CRT.

In this study, we examine the fracture network of the Tolhuaca geothermal system located in the Southern Andean volcanic zone that may have acted as a pathway for migration and ascent of deep-seated fluids under the far/local stress field conditions of the area. We collected the orientation, slip-data and mineralogical content of faults and veins recovered on a ca. 1000 m deep borehole (Tol-1) located in the NW-flank of the Tolhuaca volcano. Tol-1 is a non-oriented, vertical borehole that recovered relatively young ( 1 axis (083/74) and a subhorizontal, NS-trending σ 3 axis (184/03). Within the topmost 400 m of the borehole, faults and veins are randomly oriented, whereas below 400 m depth, faults and veins show preferential NE-to EW-strikes and steep (>50°) dips. The EW-striking veins are compatible with the calculated local stress field whereas NE-striking veins are compatible with the regional stress field, the morphological elongation of volcanic centers, alignments of flank vents and dikes orientation. Our results demonstrate that the paleomagnetic methodology proved to be reliable and it is useful to re-orient vertical boreholes such as Tol-1. Furthermore, our data show that the bulk transpressional regional stress field has local variations to a tensional stress field within the NE-striking fault zone belonging to the Liquine-Ofqui Fault System, favoring the activation of both NW- and NE-striking pre-existent discontinuities, especially the latter which are favorably oriented to open under the prevailing stress field. The vertical σ 1 and NS-trending subhorizontal σ 3 calculated in the TGS promote the activation of EW-striking extensional veins and both NE and NW-striking hybrid faults, constituting a complex fluid pathway geometry of at least one kilometer depth.

In this work, we present an update for the conceptual model of the El Tatio-La Torta geothermal system, one of the most studied geothermal fields in the Central Andes of South America. Using the structural model reported by Veloso et al. (2019) for northern Chile, the conceptual model proposes a reservoir architecture and heat transfer modes at different scales, connecting the distal catchment area located 15 km east of El Tatio with the outflow of the system: El Tatio geothermal field. The main results of this work are (a) the location of a complex and large reservoir system below El Tatio and La Torta, composed by three main levels named A, B and C, which are connected by the intersection of NW-striking left-lateral and N-striking thrust faults, (b) an explanation for the upflow below La Torta, which is given by the tectono-geothermal environment of the geothermal system, (c) the possible location of the main catchment area at the Tocorpuri basin/caldera, located 15–20 km to the east from the El Tatio geysers, and (d) an explanation for the apparent hydraulic disconnection at El Tatio observed by pressure interference tests, which is coherent with the proposed structural setting for the geothermal field. These results give a physical representation about the fluid circulation and heat transfer modes, connecting La Torta and El Tatio as a unique large-scale geothermal system in the Central Andes.

Geothermal exploration in the Central Andean Volcanic Zone (CAVZ) focuses on heat capacities of known geothermal systems, yet the role of faults, veins, fractures and folds on the evolution and migration of fluids is far from complete. Here, we present a compilation of He and Sr isotope data and newly generated structural maps to examine if particular tectonic configurations are associated with fluids migrating from different crustal levels. Accordingly, we defined three tectono-geothermal environments (T1–T3) depicting specific structural arrangements and spatial relation with geothermal and volcanic manifestations. T1 is dominated by left-lateral strike-slip NW-striking faults, and geothermal and volcanic manifestations occur along the traces of these structures. T2 is dominated by N-striking thrust faults and parallel fault-propagated folds, cut and displaced by NW-striking faults. Here, geothermal manifestations occur at fault intersections and at fold hinges. T3 is defined by left-lateral/normal NW-striking faults, with geothermal and volcanic manifestations lying along fault traces. Each tectono-geothermal environment yields distinctive isotope ratios and geothermal reservoir temperatures. T1 shows high helium and low strontium ratios, and temperatures between 220° and 310°C. T3 shows low helium and high strontium ratios and temperatures between 260° and 320°C. T2 isotope ratios fall between T1 and T3, with lowest (130°-250°C) reservoir temperatures. We argue that these particular isotope signatures are due to a structural control on reservoir location and orientation. The orientation of the fracture mesh genetically associated with each tectono-geothermal environment is a first-order control on the migration pathway of fluids. Our model shows that T1 allows fluxing of deeper fluids, T2 promotes storage and favors longer residence times and T3 enhances subvertical fluid migration. Results here help to explain the evolution of geothermal systems in a wider context, including fault systems and Sr and He isotope variations, thus providing a framework for geothermal exploration in the CAVZ.

Purpose To evaluate the incidence of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) induced by intravitreal injections of anti–vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents in cases of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Design Cohort study conducted at a single tertiary referral vitreoretinal practice. Participants A total of 396 eyes of 295 patients were diagnosed with neovascular AMD between 2009 and 2014. A total of 125 eyes of 112 patients met the inclusion criteria and were evaluated in this study. Methods This study included patients with neovascular AMD who presented vitreomacular adhesion (VMA) detected by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) at baseline. Eyes with VMA were classified according to the diameter of vitreous attachment to the macular surface measured by OCT, with attachment of ≤1500 μm defined as focal and attachment of >1500 μm defined as broad. All patients received at least 3 monthly intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents. Follow-up visits were performed 1 month after each intravitreal injection and included OCT analysis to evaluate the incidence of PVD. Main Outcome Measures Posterior vitreous detachment induced by anti-VEGF injections. Results The mean follow-up period was 21.3 months (range, 3–59 months). The mean number of intravitreal injections was 8.3 (range, 3–29 injections). Intravitreal drugs used in the study were ranibizumab (51.5%), bevacizumab (33.5%), and aflibercept (15.0%). Seven eyes (5.6%) developed PVD after intravitreal drug injection (3 eyes after the first intravitreal injection: bevacizumab in 1 and ranibizumab in 2; 2 eyes after the second injection: ranibizumab in 1 and bevacizumab in 1; 1 eye after the fourth injection: ranibizumab; and 1 eye after the sixth injection: aflibercept). A total of 118 eyes remained with persistent VMA. All 7 eyes that developed PVD were classified as having focal VMA, with the diameter of vitreous attachment ranging from 210 to 1146 μm (mean, 600 μm). Conclusions Intravitreal injections of commonly used anti-VEGF intravitreal drugs rarely induce PVD in patients with neovascular AMD. Eyes with focal VMA have a greater chance to develop PVD than eyes with a broad area of VMA.

In this study, magnetic BaTiO 3 :Co (BT:Co) nanoparticles prepared using a combined sol–gel–hydrothermal technique were dispersed in a chitosan/Pluronic F-127 solution (QO/Pl) to obtain a nanocomposite hybrid films. Nanoparticles and hybrid films were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and alternating gradient magnetometry (AGM). Experimental results indicated that the BT:Co nanoparticles were encapsulated in the QO/Pl hybrid films and that the magnetic properties of the QO/Pl/BT:Co nanocomposites are similar to the naked BT:Co nanoparticles. Results indicate that Co doping produces an enhancement in the ferromagnetic behavior of the BT nanoparticle. The coating restricts this enhancement only to low-fields, leaving the diamagnetic behavior of BT at high-fields. Magnetically stable sizes (PSD) were obtained at 3% Co doping for both naked nanoparticles and hybrid films. These show an increased magnetic memory capacity and a softer magnetic hardness with respect to non-doped BT nanoparticles.

Purpose: To report features of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Brazilian patients. Procedures: Data were prospectively collected from patients diagnosed with neovascular AMD. Eyes were classified as having typical neovascular AMD, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), or retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP). Results: In total, 265 eyes of 207 patients of predominantly Caucasian ancestry were included; 166 (62.6%) eyes had typical neovascular AMD, 65 (24.5%) eyes had PCV, and 34 (12.8%) eyes had RAP. RAP demonstrated a higher percentage of bilateral cases (p = 0.015). The mean foveal subfield thickness was significantly lower in eyes with PCV (p < 0.001). Cases with typical neovascular AMD had a higher percentage of predominantly classic and minimally classic lesions on fluorescein angiography (FA; p = 0.005). Conclusions: In Brazilian patients, PCV and RAP represented 24.5 and 12.8% of neovascular AMD cases. Neovascular AMD subtypes differ in relation to clinical features, mean foveal subfield thickness and FA presentation.

Purpose: To report the first case of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to dengue fever. Case Report: A 54-year-old female was referred to our department with blurred vision and metamorphopsia in her left eye. Two weeks earlier, she had presented all of the classic symptoms of dengue fever including a positive serology. Her best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/150 in the left eye. She underwent a fundus examination, fluorescein angiography (FA) and spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Results: All findings were consistent with CNV secondary to dengue fever. FA revealed a classic CNV associated with focal retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) destruction and detachment. Three consecutive monthly injections of intravitreal ranibizumab resulted in functional and anatomical improvement for as long as 6 months with a BCVA of 20/25. However, CNV recurred 2 years later, again with an improvement after ranibizumab therapy, but with persistence of a fibrovascular RPE detachment, highlighting the pathomechanism of a classic CNV formation. Conclusions: Maculopathy in dengue fever may be followed by CNV as a result of the immunologic alteration of the RPE. Physicians should be aware of this manifestation to be able to initiate adequate treatment with excellent functional and anatomical results.

Purpose: We aimed to assess the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFChT) and the effect of treatment with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents on the SFChT in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) subtypes. Methods: We enrolled 128 eyes of 107 patients with neovascular AMD (60 women; 47 men; mean age, 73.6 ± 8.9 years), and prospectively evaluated the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and SFChT at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment with anti-VEGF agents. Patients were assigned to the typical AMD, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), and retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP) subgroups. Results: In total, 85 (66.4%), 31 (24.2%), and 12 (9.4%) eyes were assigned to the typical AMD, PCV, and RAP subgroups, respectively. The baseline mean BCVA was 0.75 ± 0.26, 0.72 ± 0.21, and 0.77 ± 0.24 logMAR in the typical AMD, PCV, and RAP subgroups, respectively (p = 0.774). The mean baseline SFChT was 203.20 ± 35.80, 271.80 ± 24.50, and 182.93 ± 31.31 µm, respectively (p < 0.001). Mean SFChT significantly decreased from baseline to 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment. The RAP subtype presented a significantly higher decrease in SFChT compared to the other subtypes (p = 0.01). The percentage reduction in SFChT was not significantly correlated with the number of injections (r = –0.02; p = 0.823). No association was observed between baseline SFChT and final visual acuity at 12 months (r = 0.0; p = 0.586). Conclusions: SFChT was greatest in eyes with PCV and least in eyes with RAP. The reduction in SFChT after treatment was greater in the RAP cases. The decrease in SFChT after 12 months of anti-VEGF treatment was not associated with the number of injections and there was no correlation between the baseline SFChT and visual acuity in all AMD subtypes.

Objective: To investigate the association between CFH gene polymorphism and response to ranibizumab in Brazilian patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD).Methods: 95 patients were genotyped for the CFH rs1061170 (Y402H) single nucleotide polymorphism. Patients with neovascular AMD initially received intravitreal ranibizumab injections for three months and were retreated as needed. Visual acuity (VA) and central retinal thickness (CRT) were measured before treatment and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-treatment.Results: For patients with the TT and TC genotypes, paired comparisons of VA showed a statistically significant improvement when the data obtained at all visits were compared with baseline. Patients homozygous for the risk genotype (CC) did not show a statistically significant improvement when VA obtained at visits 1, 3, 6 and 12 were compared with baseline. For all genotypes, paired comparisons of CRT showed a statistically significant improvement when the data obtained at visits 1, 3, 6 and 12 were compared with baseline.Conclusion: Patients with the CC genotype showed poorer long-term functional response to intravitreal ranibizumab. Objetivo:investigar a associação entre polimorfismo do gene CFH e a resposta terapêutica ao ranibizumabe na degeneração macular relacionada à idade (DMRI) neovascular.Métodos: noventa e cinco pacientes foram submetidos à genotipagem para identificação do polimorfismo rs1061170 (Y402H) do gene CFH. Pacientes portadores de DMRI neovascular receberam inicialmente três injeções intravítreas de ranibizumabe com intervalo mensal entre elas. A partir de então, foram retratados de acordo com a necessidade. Acuidade visual (AV) e espessura macular central (EMC) foram medidas antes e 1, 3, 6 e 12 meses após o início do tratamento.Resultados: para pacientes portadores dos genótipos TT e TC, a análise pareada da AV mostrou melhora estatisticamente significativa quando os dados obtidos em todas as visitas foram comparados com aqueles obtidos antes do início do tratamento. Para pacientes homozigotos para o alelo de risco (CC), não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa quando a AV obtida nas visitas 1, 3, 6 e 12 foi comparada com aquela obtida antes do início do tratamento. Para todos os genótipos, a análise pareada da EMC mostrou melhora estatisticamente significativa em todas as avaliações.Conclusão: pacientes portadores do genótipo CC apresentaram pior resposta funcional em longo prazo após o tratamento com ranibizumabe intravítreo.

Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Hole 1256D successfully sampled a complete section of an intact oceanic crustal sheeted dike complex (SDC) (from 1061 to 1320 meters below seafloor; mbsf) on a 15 Ma old Cocos Plate. A series of rock magnetic measurements were carried out to understand the magmatic processes that accreted this end-member, superfast-spread (200 mm/yr full rate) oceanic crust. Results indicate that main ferromagnetic minerals are predominantly pseudo single-domain (titano)magnetite crystals, responsible for both anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and magnetic remanence signals. AMS fabrics were reoriented into a geographic reference frame using magnetic remanence data, and corrected for a counterclockwise rotation of the Cocos Plate relative to the East Pacific Rise (EPR) ca. 15 Ma. Corrected AMS fabrics were then compared with the orientations of chilled margins previously obtained from Formation MicroScanner (FMS) images of the SDC at Hole 1256D. For some samples taken from close to dike margins, a dike-normal orientation of the minimum AMS axes (Kmin) of prolate AMS ellipsoids mean that the long axis (Kmax) can be used to infer magma flow directions. Subvertical Kmin orientations in the interior of the dikes, however, may have required settling or compaction of the magma shortly after intrusion, thus rearranging the AMS fabric. Despite this orientation of Kmin axes, orientation of Kmax axes indicate a rather constant subhorizontal paleo-flow direction, suggesting that magmas most probably traveled to the surface considerable distances from source regions within the EPR system.

Background/Aims: To investigate the association between VEGF gene polymorphism and response to ranibizumab in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: A total of 92 patients were genotyped for the VEGF rs1413711 single nucleotide polymorphism. Patients with neovascular AMD initially received 3 monthly ranibizumab intravitreal injections and were retreated as needed. Visual acuity (VA) and central retinal thickness (CRT) were measured before and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after treatment. Results: For patients with TT and CT genotypes, paired comparisons of mean VA showed improvement when the data obtained at all visits were compared with baseline values, in contrast to patients with the CC genotype. CRT statistically improved at all visits for all genotypes. Conclusion: Patients with the CC genotype showed poorer long-term functional and anatomical response to anti-VEGF therapy.

Eu 3+ -doped BaTiO 3 phases were synthesized by combined sol–gel and hydrothermal methods under an oxygen partial pressure of 60 psi. The crystal phases were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. The Raman spectra as well as the magnetic properties were also investigated. The photoluminescence emission spectra confirm that the samples were efficiently excited by near-UV light. All spectra were dominated by a red emission band due to the electric dipole transition 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 . The dependence of the Raman spectra and optical and magnetic properties on the amount of Eu 3+ incorporated into the phases was also investigated. The number of magnetic domains increased with the concentration of Eu 3+ added. The stabilization of the tetragonal phases was also observed in Eu 3+ -doped samples, and their ferroelectric properties were also maintained, making these phases interesting multifunctional materials for applications in device design.

The Dominga district in northern Chile (2082 Mt at 23.3 % Fe, 0.07 % Cu) shows a spatial and genetic affinity among distinctive structural elements and Fe–Cu-rich paragenetic mineral assemblages. Deep seated, NE-to-E striking structural elements form a right-lateral duplex-like structural system (early structural system, ESS) that cuts a regionally extensive alteration (stage I) zone. The EES system served as a locus and as path for the emplacement of biotite–magnetite alteration/mineralization (stage IIa) as veins and Fe-bearing layers following altered volcano sedimentary strata. NW-striking actinolite–magnetite hydrothermal breccias, coeval with and part of the ESS, include apatite (stage IIb) crystallized at 127 ± 15 Ma (U–Pb, 2σ). The ESS was also the locus of subsequent alteration/mineralization represented by K-feldspar, epidote, and albite (stage IIIa) and Fe–Cu-rich (vermiculite–anhydrite–chalcopyrite, stage IIIb) mineral associations. Shallowly developed, NNE-striking, left-lateral structural elements defining the El Tofo Structural System (ETSS)—probably part of the Atacama Fault System—clearly crosscut the ESS. Minerals associated with alteration/mineralization stage IIIb also occur as veins and as part of hydrothermal breccias of the ETSS, marking the transition from the ESS to ETSS. Molybdenite associated with alteration/mineralization stage IIIb yielded a Re–Os age of 127.1 ± 0.7 Ma (2σ). Both the ESS and ETSS were cut by left-lateral, NW- to E-striking shallowly developed structural elements (Intermediate Structural System, ISS) on which a hematite–calcite assemblage (stage IV) occurs mostly as infill material of veins and fault veins. The ISS is cut by N-striking, left-lateral, and shallowly developed structural elements (Late Structural System, LSS) showing no evidence of alteration/mineralization. Estimated strain and stress fields indicate an overall NW-trending shortening/compression and NE-trending stretching/tension strike-slip regime probably due to oblique subduction during the Mesozoic. However, the orientations of the stress and strain fields calculated for each structural system suggest a back-and-forth rotation pattern during transition from one structural system to the other—as they change between transtension and transpression—and between alteration/mineralization stages.

Purpose: To investigate the association between the CFH and ARMS2 gene polymorphisms and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a Brazilian cohort. Methods: We examined 163 individuals with AMD and 154 controls recruited at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, at the Instituto da Visão, and at the Centro Especializado em Olhos, in Brazil, between 2007 and 2012. Genotyping for CFH rs1061170 and ARMS2 rs10490924 single-nucleotide polymorphisms was performed. The odds ratios (OR) for all of the studied genotypes (heterozygous and homozygous) of both genes were calculated compared to homozygous ancestral alleles. Results: Homozygosity for the CFH and ARMS2 at-risk allele was 33.3 and 23.6%, respectively, for AMD individuals and 10.3 and 7.1%, respectively, for controls (p < 0.0001). The OR was 7.2 (95% CI 3.6-14.5; p < 0.001) for the CFH at-risk genotype (CC) and 5.5 (95% CI 2.6-11.8; p < 0.0001) for ARMS2 (TT). Subjects homozygous for both polymorphisms had a much higher risk of developing AMD (n = 14 patients, OR 33.3, 95% CI 12.8-86.4). The proportion of ancestry in each group indicated that AMD patients had a higher European (Caucasian) component than controls. Conclusion:CFH and ARMS2 polymorphisms were strongly associated with AMD in this Brazilian cohort.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of vitreomacular adhesion (VMA) on the outcome of antiangiogenic treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: Ninety-nine eyes of 83 patients were used in our cohort study. We prospectively evaluated best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central retinal thickness (CRT) in patients with neovascular AMD at baseline and 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents. All patients were stratified by spectral domain optical coherence tomography into 2 groups (i.e., VMA[+] and VMA[-]) according to the presence or absence of VMA, and the response to treatment was evaluated. Results: Fifty-four eyes (54.5%) were included in the VMA(-) group and 45 eyes (45.5%) comprised the VMA(+) group. In paired comparisons of mean BCVA between baseline and each follow-up visit (1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months), the VMA(-) group showed statistically significant improvement at 1, 2, and 3 months compared to baseline, and BCVA significantly improved only at 3 months in the VMA(+) group. For both groups, paired comparisons of CRT showed a statistically significant decrease when data obtained at 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months were compared to baseline values (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Posterior VMA is associated with a worse short-term outcome in patients with neovascular AMD treated with anti-VEGF agents.

Fault development models are crucial to predict geometry and distribution of fractures at all scales. We present here structures related to the development of the Bolfin Fault in the Atacama Fault System (AFS), covering a range of scales of 7 orders of magnitude. The AFS is a 1000 km-long trench-parallel fault system located in the Andean Forearc. The Bolfin Fault is a first-order fault of the Caleta Coloso Duplex, has a trend ∼170° and length >45 km. It cuts mainly meta-diorites and exhibits a 100–200 m thick core of subvertical bands of altered fractured host rock and of foliated cataclasites. This foliation is made up of several trend-parallel cm-thick shear bands, composed of plagioclase fragments (>0.1 mm) surrounded by epidote. In the compressive quadrant around the tip point of Bolfin Fault, the lower strain faults exhibit an unusual internal structure consisting of fractures arranged in a multi-duplex pattern. This pattern can be observed from meters to millimeters scale. The fractures in the strike-slip duplex pattern can be separated into two types. Main Faults: trend-parallel, longer and with larger offsets; and Secondary Fractures: sigmoid-shape fractures distributed in the regions between Main Faults, all oriented between 15° and 75° with respect to the Main Faults, measured counterclockwise (i.e. in P-diedra). On the basis of the distribution of the two types of recognized fractures, the relative sequence of propagation can be inferred. Main Faults, the more widely distributed, propagated earlier. The Secondary Fractures, in turn, distributed in thinner areas between the larger Main Faults, were propagated later as linking fractures. The duplex pattern is self-similar: Multiple-Core Faults with internal structure of multiple-duplex are itself in turn secondary faults within a larger km-scale duplex (Caleta Coloso Duplex). The duplex width (W) and the length (L) of the Main Faults forming the duplex show an almost linear relationship, for duplexes observed from micro- to regional scale. For a scale range of seven orders of magnitude, the length of the master strike-slip faults is about ten times the width of the overlapping duplex area. This relationship evidence the self-similar nature of the structural system under study and suggests that the same fundamental mechanical processes that build up the small strike-slip duplexes operate also at the regional scale.

To investigate the association between VEGF gene polymorphism and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a Brazilian cohort.We examined 160 affected individuals and 140 sex- and age-matched controls recruited at the Vision Institute and the Retina Department, São Geraldo Hospital, Minas Gerais Federal University, Brazil, between 2007 and 2011. Genotyping for the VEGF rs1413711 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (+674CT) was performed. The incidence rate ratios and 95% confidence interval (CI) for AMD for this genotype was calculated. The odds ratio (OR) was also assessed by using logistic regression, controlling for CFH and LOC387715 risk genotype.We observed a prevalence of homozygosity (TT genotype) of 18.1% for rs1413711 among AMD cases compared with 5.8% among controls (P 0.002). The ORs for this polymorphism were 3.6 (95%CI 1.6-8.2) for homozygous subjects and 1.5 (95%CI 1.1-2.1, P 0.01) if the subject had at least one risk allele. When we studied separately exudative and dry AMD groups, this polymorphism was statistically significant for both groups. Controlling for CFH and LOC387715 risk genotype the OR was 3.0 for VEGF homozygous, and the OR increases if the patient is homozygous for the three genes.The present data suggests that VEGF TT genotype is associated with AMD among Brazilian patients.

application/pdf, The Taitao granites are distributed around the Late Miocene Taitao ophiolite (5.66 ± 0.33 Ma to 5.19 ± 0.15 Ma) exposed at the western tip of the Taitao peninsula, southern Chile, ~ 50 km southeast from the present day Chile triple junction. In this paper, we report sensitive high mass-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U–Pb ages for the Taitao granites to elucidate the temporal relationship between the ophiolite and granites, and discuss the origin of the granitic melts. Five intrusive bodies of the Taitao granites have U–Pb ages ranging from 5.70 ± 0.25 Ma (Tres Montes pluton in southeast) to 3.92 ± 0.07 Ma (Cabo Raper pluton in southwest). The Estero Cono, Seno Hoppner and Bahia Barrientos intrusions that fringe eastern margin of the ophiolite have U–Pb ages ranging from 5.17 ± 0.09 Ma to 4.88 ± 0.3 Ma. Recycled zircon cores are common only in the Tres Montes pluton. Our data indicate that the generation of the granitic melts started in the Tres Montes area when a short segment of the Chile ridge system started to subduct ca. 6 Ma ago. This magmatism involved contamination with sediments/basement rocks. A part of the subducting ridge center was emplaced to form the present Taitao ophiolite at ~ 5.6 Ma. Generation of granitic melts continued as the spreading center of the same ridge segment subducted, due perhaps to partial melting of the ophiolite and/or oceanic crust enhanced by heat from upwelling mantle beneath the ridge. Granitic magmas with various compositions developed during subduction of the ridge. Emplacement of the ophiolite and formation of continental crust took place almost simultaneously.

This study addresses the interplay between strain/stress fields and paleo-fluid migration in the Southern Andean Volcanic Zone (SVZ). The SVZ coexists with the margin-parallel Liquine–Ofqui Fault System (LOFS) and with NW-striking Andean Transverse Faults (ATF). To tackle the role of different fault-fracture systems on deformation distribution and magma/fluid transport, we map the nature, geometry and kinematics of faults, veins and dikes at various scales. Fault-slip data analysis yields stress and strain fields from the full study area data base (regional scale) and fault zones representative of each fault system (local scale). Regional scale strain analysis shows kinematically heterogeneous faulting. Local strain analyses indicate homogeneous deformation with NE-trending shortening and NW-trending extension at NNE-striking Liquine–Ofqui master fault zones. Strain axes are clockwise rotated at second order fault zones, with ENE-trending shortening and NNW-trending stretching. The ATF record polyphasic deformation. Conversely, stress field analysis at regional scale indicates a strike-slip dominated transpressional regime with N64°E-trending σ1 and N30°W-trending σ3. Deformation is further partitioned within the arc through NNE-striking dextral-reverse faults, NE-striking dextral-normal faults and NW-striking sinistral-reverse faults with normal slip activation. The regional tectonic regime controls the geometry of NE-striking dikes and volcanic centers. NE-striking faults record local stress axes that are clockwise rotated with respect to the regional stress field. NNE- and NE-striking faults are favorably oriented for reactivation under the regional stress field and show poorly-developed damage zones. Conversely, NW-striking fault systems, misoriented under the regional stress field, show multiple fault cores, wider damage zones and dense vein networks. Deformation driven by oblique subduction is partially partitioned into strike-slip and shortening components. The trench-parallel component is mostly accommodated by NS-striking right-lateral faults of the LOFS. Trench-perpendicular shortening is accommodated by sinistral-reverse ATF and dextral-reverse NNE-striking faults. We conclude that the SVZ records a deformation history coeval with magma/fluid migration.

Determination of paleocurrent directions is a robust approach to establish the mechanism of sediment transport and of deposition. However, in tectonically controlled (or affected) basins where rotations are suspected, it is of critical importance to correct previously calculated paleocurrent directions to establish the original (pre-tectonic) transport and deposition patterns. In order to illustrate this, we determined the orientations of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) fabrics from 14 sites distributed along the sedimentary deposits interbedded within the Late Miocene Main Volcanic Unit (MVU) of the Taitao ophiolite, Southern Chile. Data were used to estimate characteristics (directions and relative velocities) of the sediment transporting paleocurrents and orientations of the depositional slope. Sedimentary deposits consist of a rhythmic sequence of conglomerate (base), sandstone and mudstone (top) beds that present a systematic decrease in grain size up-sequence as a whole, and within individual beds. Sedimentary deposits of the MVU, as well as overlaying effusive volcanic products, are disrupted by small and discrete dextral/normal brittle faults. The distribution of fault planes and their kinematic characteristics suggest the development of a dextral negative flower-like fault zone in the area. Previously reported NW-ward paleocurrent directions obtained from the orientations of sedimentary structures roughly agree with our calculations based on the orientations of AMS fabrics. Calculated paleocurrent directions are sub-parallel to the NW-SE trend of Estero Cono channel, the main lineament in the area. The spatial distribution of AMS axes between and within sites suggest that coarse grain deposits were transported by relatively high velocity flows whereas fine grained deposits were by low to nearly null velocity flows. Previously reported paleomagnetic analyses indicate that counterclockwise rotations affected the whole Taitao ophiolite, including the MVU. By applying the necessary corrections we obtained paleocurrent directions yielding mostly NNW-ward directions. Restoration of the orientations of beddings indicates that the depositional surface dipped steeply at its easternmost edge and shallowly at the westernmost end. We propose here that sediments were transported by turbidite flows generated by slope instabilities in the innermost part of the Estero Cono. These turbidites followed the Estero Cono lineament while they filled the channel and transported sedimentary material (eroded from the upper portions of the ophiolite and nearby units) towards the Pacific Ocean. Sediments were deposited on a NW- to W-facing slope and sorted in decreasing grain size along the channel. The instability of the slope was most probably triggered by the activity of a transtensional fault zone developed along the mid-axis of the Estero Cono channel.

A 67-year-old asymptomatic man presented with bilateral drusen. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed no signs of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and no intraretinal or subretinal fluid. OCT angiography (OCTA) revealed the presence of a type 1 CNV in the right eye. Management options were discussed with the patient, who opted for a clinical follow-up. In continental margins, large-scale, strike-slip fault-systems resulted from oblique subduction commonly exhibit a complex pattern of faulting where major faults define the inland boundary of tectonic slivers that can be detached from the margin. In turn, subsidiary faults bound and define internal tectonic blocks within the sliver which are expected to rotate, translate and/or internally disrupt in order to accommodate the internal deformation. The geometrical and spatial arrangement of faults and tectonic blocks thus determines the evolution of the sliver given a particular stress field regime. The Paposo segment of the Atacama Fault System in northern Chile displays a series of brittle faults whose orientations are hierarchically arranged: low-order faults splay off higher-order faults forming Riedel-type and strike-slip duplexes geometries at several scales. The master (1st- and highest-order) Paposo Fault defines the inland boundary of a tectonic sliver whereas subsidiary faults bound and disrupt internal tectonic blocks. By using newly collected brittle fault-slip data we estimated the orientations and regimes of the stress fields that acted upon the entire sliver, the different fault-orders and the tectonic blocks. Results indicate that an overall transtensional – with NW-compressional and NE-tensional principal axes – strike-slip regime affected the sliver and triggered the development of left-lateral strike-slip structures. An incomplete split of the stress field imposed by the subduction process resulted in the generation of a nested pattern of R-type faults as well as in a combined strike-slip/normal faulting disruption of the tectonic blocks within the sliver.

Background: Bile duct injury (BDI) is a severe complication of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). There is general agreement about the increase of this complication after LC vs open cholecystectomy (OC), but comparative studies are scarce. The aim of this paper has been to compare the incidence and clinical features of BDI after LC vs open procedures. Materials and methods: 3,051 OC, performed from June 1977 to December 1988 were retrospectively analyzed and compared with 1,630 LCs performed from June 91 to August 96, for which data were prospectively recorded. Age, sex, type of BDI, performance of intraoperative cholangiography (IOC), underlying biliary pathology, morbidity, mortality, and late morbidity were all analyzed. Results: BDI incidence was higher in group II (LC) (N: 16, 0.95%) than in group I, (OC, N: 19, 0.6%). BDI incidence was also higher in the group of patients in which it was necessary to convert to an open procedure (3/109, 2.7%, p < 0.05). BDIs were more frequently diagnosed intraoperatively in group I (OC, 18/19) than in group II (LC, 12/16). In both groups, BDI was more prevalent in cases operated by staff surgeons than residents, mainly in complicated gallbladder patients, with a bile duct of less than 7-mm diameter. Morbidity, postoperative stay, mortality, and late morbidity were similar after a BDI in both types of approach. Conclusion: (1) BDI increases with LC. (2) BDI after LC carries a similar postoperative morbidity and mortality to those after OC. (3) Incidence of BDI in converted cases increases significantly and this constitutes a high-risk group.

Fluid–rock interaction related to the circulation of hydrothermal fluids can strongly modify the physicochemical properties of wall rocks in porphyry Cu deposits. These processes can also produce compositional and textural changes in ferromagnetic minerals, which can be quantified using magnetic methods. In the Escondida porphyry Cu deposit of northern Chile, each hydrothermally altered lithology is characterized by a discrete assemblage of Fe–Ti oxide minerals. These minerals have distinctive bulk magnetic susceptibility (K bulk), temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, and magnetic hysteresis parameters. Selectively altered rocks (i.e., potassic and chloritic alteration types) exhibit the highest K bulk values (>3.93 × 10−3 SI units), and their hysteresis parameters indicate multidomain magnetic mineral behavior. This suggests that these rocks are composed of the coarsest magnetic grain sizes within the deposit. Optical analyses and susceptibility–temperature curves confirm that the magnetic signals in selectively altered rocks are mainly carried by secondary magnetite. OBJETIVO: Realizar análise epidemiológica de pacientes com retinose pigmentar (RP), caracterizando aspectos clínicos da doença e o padrão de herança encontrado em nosso meio, de acordo com a presença ou não de síndrome de Usher. MÉTODOS: Foram estudados 155 pacientes com RP, tendo sido a amostra dividida em 2 grupos: grupo 1 (n=130), com pacientes diagnosticados com RP clássica, sem associação com alterações sistêmicas; e grupo 2 (n=25), com pacientes diagnosticados com Síndrome de Usher (USH). Foram caracterizados aspectos clínicos da doença (sexo, idade, sintomas oculares, acuidade visual, alterações do segmento anterior e posterior e alterações em exames complementares) e o padrão de herança encontrado. Os dados foram obtidos através de anamnese, exame oftalmológico completo e exames subsidiários (campo visual manual, eletrorretinograma, retinografia simples e fluorescente), no período de fevereiro de 2003 a dezembro de 2009. Foi utilizado o programa SPSS versão 13.0 para análise dos dados estatísticos. RESULTADOS: A herança autossômica recessiva foi a forma mais comumente encontrada (76,2% no grupo 1), mas em proporção maior do que a de outros trabalhos da literatura. Um menor número de casos com padrão recessivo ligado ao X (1,5%) também foi notado no grupo 1. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre as características clínicas entre os dois grupos. CONCLUSÃO: O padrão de herança encontrado nos pacientes com RP clássica foi similar ao encontrado em outros trabalhos. As características clínicas foram semelhantes nos dois grupos estudados. OBJECTIVE: To make an epidemiological analysis of patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), characterizing clinical aspects of the disease and the pattern of inheritance found in the population studied, according to the presence or not of Usher Syndrome. METHODS: 155 patients with RP were studied and the sample was divided into two groups: group 1 (n = 130) with patients diagnosed with classical RP not associated with systemic symptoms; and group 2 (n = 25) with patients diagnosed with Usher syndrome (USH). We characterized clinical aspects of the disease (sex, age, ocular symptoms, visual acuity and anterior and posterior segment changes) and the pattern of inheritance. Data were obtained through medical history, complete ophthalmic examination and complementary exams (manual visual field, electroretinogram, retinography and fluorescent angiography) for the period of February 2003 to December 2009. We used SPSS version 13.0 for statistical data analysis. RESULTS: The autosomal recessive inheritance was the most commonly found (76.2% in group 1), but in greater proportion than that of other studies. A smaller number of cases with X-linked recessive pattern (1.5%) was also noted in group 1. There was no statistically significant difference between the clinical characteristics of the two groups. CONCLUSION: The pattern of inheritance found in patients with classical RP was similar to that found in other studies. Clinical characteristics were similar in both groups.

A qualitative process modelling method is presented which makes use of a fuzzy graph theory-based Signed Directed Graph (fuzzy-SDG) to represent the mathematical models governing the process systems. Two methods for solving problems in the domain are discused: node-to-node reasoning and a matrix method. The advantages of the methods are discussed and the effectiveness of the procedures is illustrated by reference to case studies.

Background/Aims: The aim of this paper is to report the treatment of type 2 nonproliferative idiopathic macular telangiectasia (IMT) with intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB). Methods: Retrospective case series of 10 eyes of 5 patients with type 2 IMT. All patients received 3 monthly IVB injections. Visual acuity (VA), fluorescein angiography (FA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were performed at baseline and 4 weeks after each injection. Results: Four weeks after the third IVB injection, VA remained stable for all patients. All eyes showed some decrease in fluorescein leakage, and there was a mild decrease in central macular thickness. One year later, VA, OCT and FA findings returned to the baseline levels. Conclusion: IVB did not improve VA in cases of type 2 IMT.
