Search

Isotropic diffuse gamma-ray flux in the PeV energy band is an important tool for multimessenger tests of models of the origin of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and for new-physics searches. So far, this flux has not yet been observed. Carpet-2 is an air-shower experiment capable of detecting astrophysical gamma rays with energies above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the upper limits on the isotropic gamma-ray flux from Carpet-2 data obtained in 1999-2011 and 2018-2022. This paper describes a new $\nu_e$ identification method specifically designed to improve the low-energy ($< 30\,\mathrm{GeV}$) $\nu_e$ identification efficiency attained by enlarging the emulsion film scanning volume with the next generation emulsion readout system. A relative increase of 25-70% in the $\nu_e$ low-energy region is expected, leading to improvements in the OPERA sensitivity to neutrino oscillations in the framework of the 3 + 1 model. The method is applied to a subset of data where the detection efficiency increase is expected to be more relevant, and one additional $\nu_e$ candidate is found. The analysis combined with the $\nu_\tau$ appearance results improves the upper limit on $\sin^2 2\theta_{\mu e}$ to 0.016 at 90% C.L. in the MiniBooNE allowed region $\Delta m^2_{41} \sim 0.3\,\mathrm{eV}^2$., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Properties of the extragalactic magnetic field (EGMF) outside of clusters and filaments of the large-scale structure are essentially unknown. The EGMF could be probed with $\gamma$-ray observations of distant (redshift $z > 0.1$) blazars. TeV $\gamma$ rays from these sources are strongly absorbed on extragalactic background light photons; secondary electrons and positrons produce cascade $\gamma$ rays with the observable flux dependent on EGMF parameters. We put constraints on the EGMF strength using 145 months of Fermi-LAT observations of the blazars 1ES 1218+304, 1ES 1101-232, and 1ES 0347-121, and imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope observations of the same sources. We perform a series of full direct Monte Carlo simulations of intergalactic electromagnetic cascades with the ELMAG 3.01 code and construct a model of the observable spectra inside the point spread functions of the observing instruments for a range of EGMF strengths. We compare the observed spectra with the models for various values of the EGMF strength $B$ and calculate the exclusion statistical significance for every value of $B$. We find that the values of the EGMF strength $B \le 10^{-17}$ G are excluded at a high level of the statistical significance $Z > 4 \sigma$ for all the four options of the intrinsic spectral shape considered (power-law, power-law with exponential cutoff, log-parabola, log-parabola with exponential cutoff). The value of $B = 10^{-16}$ G is not excluded; it is still a viable option of the EGMF strength. These results were obtained for the case of steady sources., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. Blazars may accelerate protons and/or nuclei as well as electrons. The hadronic component of accelerated particles in blazars may constitute the bulk of their high-energy budget; nevertheless, this component is elusive due to a high value of the energy threshold of proton interaction with photon fields inside the source. However, broad line regions (BLRs) of some flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) may contain a sufficient amount of matter to render primary protons "visible" in $\gamma$ rays via hadronuclear interactions. In the present paper we study the persistent $\gamma$-ray emission of the FSRQ PKS 1510-089 in its low state utilizing the publicly-available Fermi-LAT data, as well as using the spectrum measured with the MAGIC imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. We find an indication for an excess of $\gamma$ rays at the energy range $\gtrsim 20$ GeV with respect to a simple baseline log-parabolic intrinsic spectral model. This excess could be explained in a scenario invoking hadronuclear interactions of primary protons on the BLR material with the subsequent development of electromagnetic cascades in photon fields. We present a Monte Carlo calculation of the spectrum of this cascade component, taking as input the BLR photon field spectrum calculated with the Cloudy code. To our knowledge, this is the first calculation of electromagnetic cascade spectrum inside a blazar based on a direct calculation of the photon field spectrum with a spectral synthesis code., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Galactic sites of acceleration of cosmic rays to energies of order 10^15 eV and higher, dubbed PeVatrons, reveal themselves by recently discovered gamma radiation of energies above 100 TeV. However, joint gamma-ray and neutrino production, which marks unambiguously cosmic-ray interactions with ambient matter and radiation, was not observed until now. In November 2020, the IceCube neutrino observatory reported an ~150 TeV neutrino event from the direction of one of the most promising Galactic PeVatrons, the Cygnus Cocoon. Here we report on the observation of a 3.1-sigma (post trial) excess of atmospheric air showers from the same direction, observed by the Carpet-2 experiment and consistent with a few-months flare in photons above 300 TeV, in temporal coincidence with the neutrino event. The fluence of the gamma-ray flare is of the same order as that expected from the neutrino observation, assuming the standard mechanism of neutrino production. Primary very high energy $\gamma$-rays from $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRBs) are partially absorbed on extragalactic background light (EBL) photons with subsequent formation of intergalactic electromagnetic cascades. Characteristics of the observable cascade $\gamma$-ray signal are sensitive to the strength and structure of the extragalactic magnetic field (EGMF). GRB 190114C was recently detected with the MAGIC imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, for the first time allowing to estimate the observable cascade intensity. We inquire whether any constraints on the EGMF strength and structure could be obtained from publicly-available $\gamma$-ray data on GRB 190114C. We present detailed calculations of the observable cascade signal for various EGMF configurations. We show that the sensitivity of the Fermi-LAT space $\gamma$-ray telescope is not sufficient to obtain such constraints on the EGMF parameters. However, next-generation space $\gamma$-ray observatories such as MAST would be able to detect pair echoes from GRBs similar to GRB 190114C for the EGMF strength below 10^{-17}--10^{-18} G., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. The SPHERE-2 balloon-borne detector designed for extensive air shower (EAS) observations using EAS optical Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation (``Cherenkov light''), reflected from the snow-covered surface of Lake Baikal is described. We briefly discuss the concept behind the reflected Cherenkov light method, characterize the conditions at the experimental site and overview the construction of the tethered balloon used to lift the SPHERE-2 telescope above the surface. This paper is mainly dedicated to a detailed technical description of the detector, including its optical system, sensitive elements, electronics, and data acquisition system (DAQ). An event topology with two secondary vertices compatible with the decay of short-lived particles was found in the analysis of neutrino interactions in the Opera target. The observed topology is compatible with tau neutrino charged current (CC) interactions with charm production and neutrino neutral current (NC) interactions with $c\overline{c}$ pair production. However, other processes can mimic this topology. A dedicated analysis was implemented to identify the underlying process. A Monte Carlo simulation was developed and complementary procedures were introduced in the kinematic reconstruction. A multivariate analysis technique was used to achieve an optimal separation of signal from background. Most likely, this event is a $\nu_{\tau}$ CC interaction with charm production, the tau and charm particle decaying into 1 prong and 2 prongs, respectively. Ultrahigh energy protons and nuclei from extragalactic cosmic ray sources initiate intergalactic electromagnetic cascades, resulting in observable fluxes of $\gamma$-rays in the GeV-TeV energy domain. The total spectrum of such cascade $\gamma$-rays of hadronic nature is significantly harder than the one usually expected from blazars. The spectra of some sources known as "extreme TeV blazars" could be well-described by this "intergalactic hadronic cascade model" (IHCM). We calculate the shape of the observable point-like spectrum, as well as the observable angular distibution of $\gamma$-rays, for the first time taking into account the effect of primary proton deflection in filaments and galaxy clusters of the extragalactic magnetic field assuming the model of Dolag et al. (2005). We present estimates of the width of the observable $\gamma$-ray angular distribution derived from simple geometrical considerations. We also employ a hybrid code to compute the observable spectral and angular distributions of $\gamma$-rays. The observable point-like spectrum at multi-TeV energies is much softer than the one averaged over all values of the observable angle. The presence of a high-energy cutoff in the observable spectra of extreme TeV blazars in the framework of the IHCM could significantly facilitate future searches of new physics processes that enhance the apparent $\gamma$-ray transparency of the Universe (for instance, $\gamma \rightarrow ALP$ oscillations). The OPERA experiment has conclusively observed the appearance of tau neutrinos in the muon neutrino CNGS beam. Exploiting the OPERA detector capabilities, it was possible to isolate high purity samples of $\nu_{e}$, $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current weak neutrino interactions, as well as neutral current weak interactions. In this Letter, the full dataset is used for the first time to test the three-flavor neutrino oscillation model and to derive constraints on the existence of a light sterile neutrino within the framework of the $3+1$ neutrino model. For the first time, tau and electron neutrino appearance channels are jointly used to test the sterile neutrino hypothesis. A significant fraction of the sterile neutrino parameter space allowed by LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded at 90% C.L. A compact device lifted over the ground surface might be used to observe optical radiation of extensive air showers (EAS). Here we consider spatial and temporal characteristics of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation ("Cherenkov light") reflected from the snow surface of Lake Baikal, as registered by the SPHERE-2 detector. We perform detailed full direct Monte Carlo simulations of EAS development and present a dedicated highly modular code intended for detector response simulations. Detector response properties are illustrated by example of several model EAS events. The instrumental acceptance of the SPHERE-2 detector was calculated for a range of observation conditions. We introduce the concept of "composite model quantities", calculated for detector responses averaged over photoelectron count fluctuations, but retaining EAS development fluctuations. The distortions of EAS Cherenkov light lateral distribution function (LDF) introduced by the SPHERE-2 telescope are understood by comparing composite model LDF with the corresponding function as would be recorded by an ideal detector situated at the ground surface. We show that the uncertainty of snow optical properties does not change our conclusions, and, moreover, that the expected performance of the SPHERE experiment in the task of cosmic ray mass composition study in the energy region $\sim$10 PeV is comparable with other contemporary experiments. OPERA is a long-baseline experiment designed to search for $\nu_{\mu}\to\nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode. It was based at the INFN Gran Sasso laboratory (LNGS) and took data from 2008 to 2012 with the CNGS neutrino beam from CERN. After the discovery of $\nu_\tau$ appearance in 2015, with $5.1\sigma$ significance, the criteria to select $\nu_\tau$ candidates have been extended and a multivariate approach has been used for events identification. In this way the statistical uncertainty in the measurement of the oscillation parameters and of $\nu_\tau$ properties has been improved. The OPERA experiment discovered muon neutrino into tau neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, detecting tau leptons by means of nuclear emulsion films. The apparatus was also endowed with electronic detectors with tracking capability, such as scintillator strips and resistive plate chambers. Because of its location, in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory, under 3800 m.w.e., the OPERA detector has also been used as an observatory for TeV muons produced by cosmic rays in the atmosphere. In this paper the measurement of the single muon flux modulation and of its correlation with the seasonal variation of the atmospheric temperature are reported.

We review extragalactic $\gamma$-ray propagation models with emphasis on the electromagnetic (EM) cascade process in the magnetized expanding Universe. We consider cascades initiated by primary protons of ultra-high energy accelerated by blazars and show that the observable spectrum is similar to the universal spectrum of a purely EM cascade. We also present a detailed calculation of the observable angular distribution for the case of EM cascades developing from relatively nearby (<20 Mpc) sources. Finally, we calculate the point-like source differential sensitivity of a novel liquid Argon time projection chamber $\gamma$-ray telescope and show that its sensitivity is several times better than the Fermi LAT sensitivity in the 100 MeV -- 100 GeV energy range., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. The OPERA experiment was designed to study $\nu_\mu\to\nu_\tau$ oscillations in appearance mode in the CNGS neutrino beam. In this letter we report the final analysis of the full data sample collected between 2008 and 2012, corresponding to $17.97\cdot 10^{19}$ protons on target. Selection criteria looser than in previous analyses have produced ten $\nu_\tau$ candidate events, thus reducing the statistical uncertainty in the measurement of the oscillation parameters and of $\nu_\tau$ properties. A multivariate approach for event identification has been applied to the candidate events and the discovery of $\nu_\tau$ appearance is confirmed with an improved significance level of 6.1 $\sigma$. $\Delta m^2_{23}$ has been measured, in appearance mode, with an accuracy of 20%. The measurement of $\nu_\tau$ CC cross-section, for the first time with a negligible contamination from $\bar{\nu}_\tau$, and the first direct observation of the $\nu_\tau$ lepton number are also reported., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The OPERA experiment has discovered the tau neutrino appearance in the CNGS muon neutrino beam, in agreement with the 3 neutrino flavour oscillation hypothesis. The OPERA neutrino interaction target, made of Emulsion Cloud Chamber, was particularly efficient in the reconstruction of electromagnetic showers. Moreover, thanks to the very high granularity of the emulsion films, showers induced by electrons can be distinguished from those induced by $\pi^0$s, thus allowing the detection of charged current interactions of electron neutrinos. In this paper the results of the search for electron neutrino events using the full dataset are reported. An improved method for the electron neutrino energy estimation is exploited. Data are compatible with the 3 neutrino flavour mixing model expectations and are used to set limits on the oscillation parameters of the 3+1 neutrino mixing model, in which an additional mass eigenstate $m_{4}$ is introduced. At high $\Delta m^{2}_{41}$ $( \gtrsim 0.1~\textrm{eV}^{2})$, an upper limit on $\sin^2 2\theta_{\mu e}$ is set to 0.021 at 90% C.L. and $\Delta m^2_{41} \gtrsim 4 \times 10^{-3}~\textrm{eV}^{2}$ is excluded for maximal mixing in appearance mode., Comment: Editors: M. Secondary {\gamma}-rays from intergalactic cascades may contribute to observable spectra of blazars, also modifying observable angular and temporal distributions. Recent progress in very high energy (VHE, E >100 GeV) $\gamma$-ray observations, together with advances in the extragalactic background light (EBL) modelling, allows to search for new phenomena such as $\gamma$-axion-like particle ($\gamma \rightarrow$ ALP) oscillation and to explore the extragalactic magnetic field (EGMF) strength and structure. These studies are usually performed by searching for some deviation from the so-called absorption-only model, that accounts for only primary photon absorption on the EBL and adiabatic losses. In fact, there exist several indications that the absorption-only model is incomplete. We present and discuss the intergalactic electromagnetic cascade model (IECM) --- the simplest model that allows to coherently explain all known anomalies. This model has a number of robust signatures that could be searched for with present and future instruments. The IECM model may serve as a new background template, allowing to make future searches for $\gamma \rightarrow$ ALP oscillation more robust. Most of the recent research on extragalactic $\gamma$-ray propagation focused on the study of the $\gamma\gamma \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$ absorption process ("absorption-only model"). Starting from a possible anomaly at very high energies (VHE, E >100 GeV), we briefly review several existing deviations from this model. The exotic interpretation of the VHE anomaly is not supported by the recent works. On the other hand, the process of intergalactic electromagnetic cascade development naturally explains these effects. We discuss phenomenology of intergalactic cascades and the main spectral signatures of the electromagnetic cascade model. We also briefly consider the hadronic cascade model; it also may explain the data, but requires low strength of magnetic field around the source of primary protons or nuclei., Comment: Proc. We briefly review contemporary extragalactic {\gamma}-ray propagation models. It is shown that the Extragalactic Magnetic Field (EGMF) strength and structure are poorly known. Strict lower limits on the EGMF strength in voids are of order 10^{-17}--10^{-20} G, thus allowing a substantial contribution of a secondary component generated by electromagnetic cascades to the observable spectrum. Context. Most of the studies on extragalactic {\gamma}-ray propagation performed up to now only accounted for primary gamma-ray absorption and adiabatic losses ("absorption-only model"). However, there is growing evidence that this model is oversimplified and must be modified in some way. In particular, it was found that the intensity extrapolated from the optically-thin energy range of some blazar spectra is insufficient to explain the optically-thick part of these spectra. This effect was interpreted as an indication for {\gamma}-axion-like particle (ALP) oscillation. On the other hand, there are many hints that a secondary component from electromagnetic cascades initiated by primary {\gamma}-rays or nuclei may be observed in the spectra of some blazars. Aims. We study the impact of electromagnetic cascades from primary {\gamma}-rays or protons on the physical interpretation of blazar spectra obtained with imaging Cherenkov telescopes. Methods. We use the publicly-available code ELMAG to compute observable spectra of electromagnetic cascades from primary {\gamma}-rays. For the case of primary proton, we develop a simple, fast and reasonably accurate hybrid method to calculate the observable spectrum. We perform the fitting of the observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with various physical models: the absorption-only model, the "electromagnetic cascade model" (for the case of primary {\gamma}-rays), and several versions of the hadronic cascade model (for the case of primary proton). We distinguish the following species of hadronic cascade models: 1) "basic hadronic model", where it is assumed that the proton beam travels undisturbed by extragalactic magnetic field and that all observable {\gamma}-rays are produced by primary protons through photohadronic processes with subsequent development of electromagnetic cascades /abridged, Comment: Accepted by A&A. 25 pages, 31 figures. Nowadays there is compelling evidence for the existence of dark matter in the Universe. A general consensus has been expressed on the need for a directional sensitive detector to confirm, with a complementary approach, the candidates found in conventional searches and to finally extend their sensitivity beyond the limit of neutrino-induced background. We propose here the use of a detector based on nuclear emulsions to measure the direction of WIMP-induced nuclear recoils. The production of nuclear emulsion films with nanometric grains is established. Several measurement campaigns have demonstrated the capability of detecting sub-micrometric tracks left by low energy ions in such emulsion films. Innovative analysis technologies with fully automated optical microscopes have made it possible to achieve the track reconstruction for path lengths down to one hundred nanometers and there are good prospects to further exceed this limit. The detector concept we propose foresees the use of a bulk of nuclear emulsion films surrounded by a shield from environmental radioactivity, to be placed on an equatorial telescope in order to cancel out the effect of the Earth rotation, thus keeping the detector at a fixed orientation toward the expected direction of galactic WIMPs. We report the schedule and cost estimate for a one-kilogram mass pilot experiment, aiming at delivering the first results on the time scale of six years.

The OPERA experiment was designed to search for $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode, i.e. by detecting the $\tau$-leptons produced in charged current $\nu_{\tau}$ interactions. The experiment took data from 2008 to 2012 in the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam. The observation of $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ appearance, achieved with four candidate events in a sub-sample of the data, was previously reported. In this paper, a fifth $\nu_{\tau}$ candidate event, found in an enlarged data sample, is described. Together with a further reduction of the expected background, the candidate events detected so far allow assessing the discovery of $\nu_{\mu}\rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode with a significance larger than 5 $\sigma$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The NESSiE Collaboration has been setup to undertake a conclusive experiment to clarify the {\em muon--neutrino disappearance} measurements at short baselines in order to put severe constraints to models with more than the three--standard neutrinos. To this aim the current FNAL--Booster neutrino beam for a Short--Baseline experiment was carefully evaluated by considering the use of magnetic spectrometers at two sites, near and far ones. The detector locations were studied, together with the achievable performances of two OPERA--like spectrometers. The study was constrained by the availability of existing hardware and a time--schedule compatible with the undergoing project of multi--site Liquid--Argon detectors at FNAL. The settled physics case and the kind of proposed experiment on the Booster neutrino beam would definitively clarify the existing tension between the $\nu_{\mu}$ disappearance and the $\nu_e$ appearance/disappearance at the eV mass scale. In the context of neutrino oscillations the measurement of $\nu_{\mu}$ disappearance is a robust and fast approach to either reject or discover new neutrino states at the eV mass scale. We discuss an experimental program able to extend by more than one order of magnitude (for neutrino disappearance) and by almost one order of magnitude (for antineutrino disappearance) the present range of sensitivity for the mixing angle between standard and sterile neutrinos. We present an event-by-event study of cosmic ray (CR) composition with the reflected Cherenkov light method. The fraction of CR light component above 5 PeV was reconstructed using the 2013 run data of the SPHERE experiment which observed optical Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation of extensive air showers, reflected from snow surface of Lake Baikal. We give an overview of the SPHERE experiment based on detection of reflected Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation (Cherenkov light) from extensive air showers in the energy region E>10^{15} eV. A brief history of the reflected Cherenkov light technique is given; the observations carried out with the SPHERE-2 detector are summarized; the methods of the experimental datasample analysis are described. For some blazars, the gamma-ray absorption features due to pair-production on the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) are fainter than expected. The present work reviews the main models that could explain this paradox, with emphasis on conservative ones, that do not include any new physics. The models that are intrinsic to the source, do allow a very hard primary spectrum, but fail to explain a regular redshift dependence of the anomaly starting energy. The model that includes a contribution from secondary photons produced by cosmic rays (CR) near the Earth seems to require a well collimated CR beam, what is hard to achieve. Finally, the model with secondary photons produced in electromagnetic (EM) cascades initiated by primary gamma-rays is considered. In principle, it allows to decrease the statistical significance of the anomaly and, while requiring quite low EGMF strength B, does not contradict to most contemporary constraints on the B value. The recent measurement of the mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ in the standard mixing oscillation scenario encourages us to pursue the still missing results on leptonic CP violation and absolute neutrino masses. However, puzzling measurements exist that deserve an exhaustive evaluation. The NESSiE Collaboration has been setup to undertake conclusive experiments to clarify the muon-neutrino disappearance measurements at small $L/E$, which will be able to put severe constraints to models with more than the three-standard neutrinos, or even to robustly measure the presence of a new kind of neutrino oscillation for the first time. To this aim the use of the current FNAL-Booster neutrino beam for a Short-Baseline experiment has been carefully evaluated. Its recent proposal refers to the use of magnetic spectrometers at two different sites, Near and Far ones. Their positions have been extensively studied, together with the possible performances of two OPERA-like spectrometers. The proposal is constrained by availability of existing hardware and a time-schedule compatible with the undergoing project of a multi-site Liquid-Argon detectors at FNAL. The OPERA experiment is searching for nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations in appearance mode i.e. via the direct detection of tau leptons in nu_tau charged current interactions. The evidence of nu_mu -> nu_tau appearance has been previously reported with three nu_tau candidate events using a sub-sample of data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth nu_tau candidate event, with the tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events without any muon in the final state to the data sample. The OPERA long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiment has observed the direct appearance of $\nu_\tau$ in the CNGS $\nu_\mu$ beam. Two large muon magnetic spectrometers are used to identify muons produced in the $\tau$ leptonic decay and in $\nu_\mu^{CC}$ interactions by measuring their charge and momentum. Besides the kinematic analysis of the $\tau$ decays, background resulting from the decay of charmed particles produced in $\nu_\mu^{CC}$ interactions is reduced by efficiently identifying the muon track. A new method for the charge sign determination has been applied, via a weighted angular matching of the straight track-segments reconstructed in the different parts of the dipole magnets. Results obtained for Monte Carlo and real data are presented. Comparison with a method where no matching is used shows a significant reduction of up to 40\% of the fraction of wrongly determined charges., Comment: 10 pages. Improvements in the text

The OPERA experiment, designed to perform the first observation of $\nu_\mu \rightarrow \nu_\tau$ oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of the $\tau$ leptons produced in $\nu_\tau$ charged current interactions, has collected data from 2008 to 2012. In the present paper, the procedure developed to detect $\tau$ particle decays, occurring over distances of the order of 1 mm from the neutrino interaction point, is described in detail. The results of its application to the search for charmed hadrons are then presented as a validation of the methods for $\nu_\tau$ appearance detection.

The OPERA detector, designed to search for $\nu_{\mu} \to \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in the CNGS beam, is located in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory, a privileged location to study TeV-scale cosmic rays. For the analysis here presented, the detector was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV region. OPERA collected charge-separated cosmic ray data between 2008 and 2012. More than 3 million atmospheric muon events were detected and reconstructed, among which about 110000 multiple muon bundles. The charge ratio $R_{\mu} \equiv N_{\mu^+}/N_{\mu^-}$ was measured separately for single and for multiple muon events. The analysis exploited the inversion of the magnet polarity which was performed on purpose during the 2012 Run. The combination of the two data sets with opposite magnet polarities allowed minimizing systematic uncertainties and reaching an accurate determination of the muon charge ratio. Data were fitted to obtain relevant parameters on the composition of primary cosmic rays and the associated kaon production in the forward fragmentation region. In the surface energy range 1-20 TeV investigated by OPERA, $R_{\mu}$ is well described by a parametric model including only pion and kaon contributions to the muon flux, showing no significant contribution of the prompt component. The energy independence supports the validity of Feynman scaling in the fragmentation region up to $200$ TeV/nucleon primary energy., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables

The present paper highlights the data analysis status of the OPERA experiment. The experiment was designed to perform the neutrino interactions analysis on event-by-event basis, and optimized to search for $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillation in appearance mode, also allowing to perform a $\nu_{e}$ appearance search. We review the data simulation and the analysis chains implemented to search for $\nu_{\tau}$ interactions. The main kinematical parameters sensitive to the neutrino flavor are discussed, the uncertainties of the event parameter estimation are reviewed, and the main sources of background for the $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillation search are examined. The topologies of the two first $\nu_{\tau}$ candidate events are presented. A first result of the search for \numu $\rightarrow$ \nue oscillations in the OPERA experiment, located at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory, is presented. The experiment looked for the appearance of \nue in the CNGS neutrino beam using the data collected in 2008 and 2009. Data are compatible with the non-oscillation hypothesis in the three-flavour mixing model. A further analysis of the same data constrains the non-standard oscillation parameters $\theta_{new}$ and $\Delta m^2_{new}$ suggested by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments. For large $\Delta m^{2}_{new}$ values ($>$0.1 eV$^{2}$), the OPERA 90% C.L. upper limit on sin$^{2}(2\theta_{new})$ based on a Bayesian statistical method reaches the value $7.2 \times 10^{-3}$.

In spring 2012 CERN provided two weeks of a short bunch proton beam dedicated to the neutrino velocity measurement over a distance of 730 km. The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory used an upgraded setup compared to the 2011 measurements, improving the measurement time accuracy. An independent timing system based on the Resistive Plate Chambers was exploited providing a time accuracy of $\sim$1 ns. Neutrino and anti-neutrino contributions were separated using the information provided by the OPERA magnetic spectrometers. The new analysis profited from the precision geodesy measurements of the neutrino baseline and of the CNGS/LNGS clock synchronization. The neutrino arrival time with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum is found to be $\delta t_\nu \equiv TOF_c - TOF_\nu= (0.6 \pm 0.4\ (stat.) \pm 3.0\ (syst.))$ ns and $\delta t_{\bar{\nu}} \equiv TOF_c - TOF_{\bar{\nu}} = (1.7 \pm 1.4\ (stat.) \pm 3.1\ (syst.))$ ns for $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$, respectively. This corresponds to a limit on the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light of $-1.8 \times 10^{-6} < (v_{\nu}-c)/c < 2.3 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% C.L. Here is presented the current state of the SPHERE-2 balloon-borne experiment. The detector is elevated up to 1 km above the snow surface and registers the reflected Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation from extensive air showers. This method has good sensitivity to the mass-composition of the primary cosmic rays due to its high resolution near the shower axis. The detector consists of a 1500 mm spherical mirror with a 109 PMT cluster in its focus. The electronics record a signal pulse profile in each PMT. First preliminary results of the balloon-borne experiment SPHERE-2 on the all-nuclei primary cosmic rays (PCR) spectrum and primary composition are presented. The primary spectrum in the energy range $10^{16}$--$5\cdot10^{17}$ eV was reconstructed using characteristics of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation of extensive air showers (EAS), reflected from a snow surface. Several sources of systematic uncertainties of the spectrum were analysed. A method for separation of the primary nuclei' groups based on the lateral distribution function' (LDF) steepness parameter is presented. Preliminary estimate of the mean light nuclei' fraction $f_{30-150}$ at energies $3\cdot10^{16}$--$1.5\cdot10^{17}$ eV was performed and yielded $f_{30-150}$= (21$\pm$11)%., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Proc. 23rd European Cosmic Ray Symposium, to appear in J. The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory has measured the velocity of neutrinos from the CERN CNGS beam over a baseline of about 730 km. The measurement is based on data taken by OPERA in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dedicated upgrades of the CNGS timing system and of the OPERA detector, as well as a high precision geodesy campaign for the measurement of the neutrino baseline, allowed reaching comparable systematic and statistical accuracies. An arrival time of CNGS muon neutrinos with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum of (6.5 +/- 7.4(stat.)((+8.3)(-8.0)sys.))ns was measured corresponding to a relative difference of the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light (v-c)/c =(2.7 +/-3.1(stat.)((+3.4)(-3.3)(sys.))x10^(-6).
