Mine tailings are commonly stored in off-stream reservoirs and are usually composed of water with high concentrations of fine particles (microns). The rupture of a mine-tailings pond promotes, depending on the characteristics of the stored material, the fluidization and release of hyper-concentrated flows that typically behave as non–Newtonian fluids. The simulation of non–Newtonian fluid dynamics using numerical modelling tools is based on the solution of mass and momentum conservation equations, particularizing the shear stress terms by means of a rheological model that accounts for the properties of the fluid. This document presents the extension of Iber, a two-dimensional hydrodynamic numerical tool, for the simulation of non–Newtonian shallow flows, especially those related to mine tailings. The performance of the numerical tool was tested throughout benchmarks and real study cases. The results agreed with the analytical and theoretical solutions in the benchmark tests; additionally, the numerical tool also revealed itself to be adequate for simulating the dynamic and static phases under real conditions. The outputs of this numerical tool provide valuable information, allowing researchers to assess flood hazard and risk in mine-tailings spill propagation scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the presented research is analysis and assessment of the Stare Miasto reservoir impact on the hydrological regime changes of the Powa River. The reservoir was built in 2006 and is located in the central part of Poland. The total area of inundation in normal conditions is 90.68 ha and its capacity is 2.159 mln m3. Hydrological regime alteration of the Powa River is analysed on the basis of daily flows from the Posoka gauge station observed during period 1974–2014. Assessment of hydrological regime changes is carried out on the basis of Range of Variability Approach (RVA) method. All calculations are made by means of Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) software version 7.1.0.10. The analysis shows that the Stare Miasto reservoir has a moderate impact on hydrological regime of the Powa River. Construction of the reservoir has positive effect on stability of minimal flows, which are important for protection of river ecosystems. The results obtained indicate that the Stare Miasto reservoir reduces a spring peak flow and enables to moderate control of floods.

The aim of the study was to determine an effective variant of operation of the Golina polder to reduce flood hazard in the Warta River valley. We implemented a trial-and-error method for the development of computational variants. Our approach was based on staged analyses of alternatives, which took into account different locations and parameters of the inlet and outlet-controlling structures. Various control scenarios for flooding and draining the polder were also considered. A hybrid hydrodynamic model consisting of a 1D part for the main river area and a 2D part for the polder area was used for calculations. The model was built based on a digital elevation model (1 m resolution) and channel sections of the Warta River. The calibration was based on data collected during the flood in 2010 from the water gauge Sławsk (located directly at the Warta River) and water surface elevation measurements carried out in the polder area. Alternatives in subsequent stages were determined based on the results of previous stages, as well as experiences from the 2010 flood and consultations with the Regional Water Management Board in Poznań. The performance of the alternatives was evaluated according to six criteria that described the effectiveness of the polder operation in terms of its practical use and effectiveness in reducing flood hazard. The results showed that our approach made it possible to identify an effective variant of polder operation. Environmental factors affecting vegetation development in the newly constructed lowland reservoir Stare Miasto located in the central part of Poland, were determined. The reservoir is divided into two parts and the majority of sediments are deposited in the upper part. The vegetation in both parts of the reservoir was surveyed. Moreover, extensive environmental dataset, including hydraulic and hydrological parameters, physical and chemical features of water and sediment grain size, was completed. The influence of various abiotic factors on littoral vegetation, including both submerged and emerged macrophytes, was analysed. We have found that zones of the reservoir had different hydraulic and hydrological conditions, different water quality and various sediment transport intensity. The botanical survey showed that the vegetation was very abundant and strongly differentiated. More diverse and abundant vegetation was detected in the upper zone. The downstream zone showed lower abundance of vegetation cover and lower biodiversity. The specific construction of the reservoir and regular water management were found the reasons for water vegetation diversity. More stable conditions in the upper zone, such as constant water level and lower depth, increased the diversity of vegetation and stimulated its abundance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the paper the application of multivariate statistical methods (cluster analysis, principal component analysis, factor analysis, discriminant analysis) for analysis of spatial and temporal variation of physical and chemical parameters along a reservoir was tested. The reservoir studied is a special two-stage reservoir. The choice of representative parameters of water quality and their variability is also presented. The basis for the assessment was the set of data including 15 parameters of water quality sampled once per month. The samples were taken at five measurement control points (MCP) located along Jezioro Kowalskie reservoir. The samples were taken in the period from September 2011 to November 2012. The inundation area of Jezioro Kowalskie reservoir is 2.03 km2 (volume 6.58 million m3). The reservoir is located in watershed of the Glowna river. The depth of the aquifer varies between 1.5 m and 6.5 m (near the dam). The analyses performed have shown that multivariate statistical methods enabled effective assessment of water quality. On the other hand, the applied methods may be used for optimization of the measurement network. The use of these statistical methods was found to permit reduction in the number of measurement control points (MCP) and optimize the frequency of sampling. The cluster analysis and the principal component analysis enabled distinction of two groups of measurement control points MCP. The water samples in each group contained similar amount of wastes. The concentrations of chemical indicators in the samples have similar spatial distribution. The concentrations of ammonia, nitrites, phosphates, iron, calcium, chlorides and magnesium presented significant tendency to decrease along the reservoir and they were classified in separate group because of this feature. Additionally, the discriminant analysis enabled the choice of representative parameters most suitable for assessment of temporal and spatial variation of water quality in the reservoir. The purpose of this paper is application of Sediment Impact Analysis Method (SIAM) on the basis of data from the Stare Miasto reservoir. The method is applied to determine trends in sedimentation of the reservoir. The object analysed, the Stare Miasto reservoir, is located in the Powa river in central part of Poland (Europe). The element splitting the object into main and upper part is a dam located in the upstream. The upper part is used as an element of sediment and water quality protection. In addition the highway A2 is narrowing the active flow cross-section in the central part of the reservoir. The methods used for the analysis include direct measurements of the reservoir geometry and computer model simulations. SIAM is utilized for the purposes of this research. The results obtained confirm proper performance of upper in the reservoir. The results also indicate that the highway bridge is the cause of sediment movement and redistribution in the main part. The problem analyzed in our paper is quantification of the impact of sediment deposition and riparian vegetation growth on floodplain inundation frequency. An additional factor is water reservoir operation. A Warta River reach was selected for the study. This natural channel is located above the Jeziorsko Reservoir. The applied methodology is a combination of data collection, hydrodynamic model simulations, and analysis of water stage frequencies. Computations and analyses showed interesting relations between elements of the river system studied. Floodplain inundation frequency was found permanently increasing. Although the main factor responsible for this is sediment deposition, the influence of riparian vegetation is important at higher water stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main purpose of the present research is to develop software for reconstruction of the river bed on the basis of sparse cross-section measurements. The tools prepared should support the process of hydrodynamic model preparation for simulation of river flow. Considering the formats of available data and the requirements of modern modeling techniques, the prepared software is fully integrated with the GIS environment. The scripting language Python 2.7 implemented in ArcGIS 10.5.1 was chosen for this purpose. Two study cases were selected to validate and test the prepared procedures. These are stream reaches in Poland. The first is located on the Warta river, and the second on the Ner river. The data necessary for the whole procedure are: a digital elevation model, measurements of the cross-sections in the form of points, and two polyline layers representing an arbitrary river centerline and river banks. In the presented research the concept of a channel-oriented coordinate system is applied. The elevations are linearly interpolated along the longitudinal and transversal directions. The interpolation along the channel is implemented in three computational schemes linking different tools available in ArcGIS and ArcToolbox. A simplified comparison of memory usage and computational time is presented. The scheme linking longitudinal and spatial interpolation algorithms seems to be the most advantageous.
