This volume contains the proceedings of the BIRS Workshop'Topics in Multiple Time Scale Dynamics,'held from November 27– December 2, 2022, at the Banff International Research Station, Banff, Alberta, Canada. The area of multiple-scale dynamics is rapidly evolving, marked by significant theoretical breakthroughs and practical applications. The workshop facilitated a convergence of experts from various sub-disciplines, encompassing topics like blow-up techniques for ordinary differential equations (ODEs), singular perturbation theory for stochastic differential equations (SDE), homogenization and averaging, slow-fast maps, numerical approaches, and network dynamics, including their applications in neuroscience and climate science. This volume provides a wide-ranging perspective on the current challenging subjects being explored in the field, including themes such as novel approaches to blowing-up and canard theory in unique contexts, complex multi-scale challenges in PDEs, and the role of stochasticity in multiple-scale systems.

The Qualitative Theory of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) occupies a rather special position both in Applied and Theoretical Mathematics. On the one hand, it is a continuation of the standard course on ODEs. On the other hand, it is an introduction to Dynamical Systems, one of the main mathematical disciplines in recent decades. Moreover, it turns out to be very useful for graduates when they encounter differential equations in their work; usually those equations are very complicated and cannot be solved by standard methods.The main idea of the qualitative analysis of differential equations is to be able to say something about the behavior of solutions of the equations, without solving them explicitly. Therefore, in the first place such properties like the stability of solutions stand out. It is the stability with respect to changes in the initial conditions of the problem. Note that, even with the numerical approach to differential equations, all calculations are subject to a certain inevitable error. Therefore, it is desirable that the asymptotic behavior of the solutions is insensitive to perturbations of the initial state.Each chapter contains a series of problems (with varying degrees of difficulty) and a self-respecting student should solve them. This book is based on Raul Murillo's translation of Henryk Żołądek's lecture notes, which were in Polish and edited in the portal Matematyka Stosowana (Applied Mathematics) in the University of Warsaw.

This book describes the basic principles of Clean Numerical Simulation (CNS) proposed by the author in 2009, as well as several of its applications. Unlike conventional algorithms, CNS gives in a sufficiently long interval of time a convergent chaotic trajectory whose numerical noise is much lower than the true physical solution, so that one can gain accurately. Thus, CNS provides for the first time an ability to check statistics stability of chaos, leading to a completely new concept of'ultra-chaos,'which has both trajectory instability and statistics instability, and thus is of a higher disorder.Notably, it is impossible to repeat experimental results of ultra-chaos even in the statistical sense. However, the reproducibility of physical experiments forms a cornerstone for modern science. Thus, ultra-chaos reveals an incompleteness of the modern science paradigm. In addition, it also reveals statistics stability as a precondition for use of conventional algorithms, including direct numerical simulation (DNS). In Clean Numerical Simulation, several conjectures and open problems are proposed, including a modified fourth Clay millennium problem. Indeed, CNS opens the door for us to enter the'clean'numerical world of chaos and turbulence.

The thematic program Quantum and Kinetic Problems: Modeling, Analysis, Numerics and Applications was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore, from September 2019 to March 2020. Leading experts presented tutorials and special lectures geared towards the participating graduate students and junior researchers.Readers will find in this significant volume four expanded lecture notes with self-contained tutorials on modeling and simulation for collective dynamics including individual and population approaches for population dynamics in mathematical biology, collective behaviors for Lohe type aggregation models, mean-field particle swarm optimization, and consensus-based optimization and ensemble Kalman inversion for global optimization problems with constraints.This volume serves to inspire graduate students and researchers who will embark into original research work in kinetic models for collective dynamics and their applications.

What is synchronization? This book will show how the concept of closeness of states or frequencies between two dynamical systems has evolved from synchronization to consensus. Part 1 introduces the concepts and mathematical descriptions of Generalized Synchronization (GS) while Part 2 covers Generalized Consensus (GC).It is suitable for researchers and practitioners undertaking the studies of synchronization and consensus of multi-agent systems, graduate students and senior undergraduate students with the backgrounds in calculus, linear algebra and ordinary differential equations, equipped with computer programming skills, in mathematics, physics, engineering and even social sciences.

The best parts of physics are the last topics that our students ever see. These are the exciting new frontiers of nonlinear and complex systems that are at the forefront of university research and are the basis of many high-tech businesses. Topics such as traffic on the World Wide Web, the spread of epidemics through globally-mobile populations, or how the synchronization of global economies are governed by universal principles just as profound as Newton's laws. Nonetheless, the conventional university physics curriculum reserves most of these topics for graduate study because of the assumed need for advanced mathematics. The field of nonsmooth dynamics is of great interest to mathematicians, mechanicians, automatic controllers and engineers. This book offers an introduction to the theory of non-autonomous and stochastic dynamical systems, with a focus on the importance of the theory in the Applied Sciences. It starts by discussing the basic concepts from the theory of autonomous dynamical systems, which are easier to understand and can be used as the motivation for the non-autonomous and stochastic situations. The book subsequently establishes a framework for non-autonomous dynamical systems, and in particular describes the various approaches currently available for analysing the long-term behaviour of non-autonomous problems. Here, the major focus is on the novel theory of pullback attractors, which is still under development. In turn, the third part represents the main body of the book, introducing the theory of random dynamical systems and random attractors and revealing how it may be a suitable candidate for handling realistic models with stochasticity. A discussion of future research directions serves to round out thecoverage.

This book provides an introduction to the analysis of discrete dynamical systems. The content is presented by an unitary approach that blends the perspective of mathematical modeling together with the ones of several discipline as Mathematical Analysis, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Systems Theory and Probability. After a preliminary discussion of several models, the main tools for the study of linear and non-linear scalar dynamical systems are presented, paying particular attention to the stability analysis. Linear difference equations are studied in detail and an elementary introduction of Z and Discrete Fourier Transform is presented. This book contains theoretical and application-oriented methods to treat models of dynamical systems involving non-smooth nonlinearities. The theoretical approach that has been retained and underlined in this work is associated with differential inclusions of mainly finite dimensional dynamical systems and the introduction of maximal monotone operators (graphs) in order to describe models of impact or friction. This monograph, written from a numerical analysis perspective, aims to provide a comprehensive treatment of both the mathematical framework and the numerical methods for flexible multibody dynamics. Not only is this field permanently and rapidly growing, with various applications in aerospace engineering, biomechanics, robotics, and vehicle analysis, its foundations can also be built on reasonably established mathematical models. Regarding actual computations, great strides have been made over the last two decades, as sophisticated software packages are now capable of simulating highly complex structures with rigid and deformable components. The approach used in this book should benefit graduate students and scientists working in computational mechanics and related disciplines as well as those interested in time-dependent partial differential equations and heterogeneous problems with multiple time scales. Additionally, a number of open issues at the frontiers of research are addressed by taking a differential-algebraic approach and extending it to the notion of transient saddle point problems.

This book presents and extend different known methods to solve different types of strong nonlinearities encountered by engineering systems. A better knowledge of the classical methods presented in the first part lead to a better choice of the so-called “base functions”. Nonsmooth Modeling and Simulation for Switched Circuits concerns the modeling and the numerical simulation of switched circuits with the nonsmooth dynamical systems (NSDS) approach, using piecewise-linear and multivalued models of electronic devices like diodes, transistors, switches. Numerous examples (ranging from introductory academic circuits to various types of power converters) are analyzed and many simulation results obtained with the INRIA open-source SICONOS software package are presented. Comparisons with SPICE and hybrid methods demonstrate the power of the NSDS approach. Das Buch behandelt den Teilbereich der Technischen Mechanik, der sich mit Schwingungen bei diskreten Systemen befasst. Hierbei ist zuerst eine Modellbildung und davon ausgehend eine Berechnung nötig. Im Buch werden nach der Einführung in die Grundlagen der Kinetik zu den unterschiedlichen Systemen Modelle erstellt und ausführliche Beispiele mit dem Computeralgebrasystem Maple durchgerechnet.

The above examples should make clear the necessity of understanding the mechanism of vibrations and waves in order to control them in an optimal way. However vibrations and waves are governed by differential equations which require, as a rule, rather complicated mathematical methods for their analysis. The material of this book can be recommended for a one year course in higher dynamics for graduate students of mechanical and civil engineering. For this circle of readers, the emphasis is made on the constructive methods of solution and not on the rigorous mathematical proofs ofconvergence. As compensation, various numerical simulations of the exact and approximate solutions are provided which demonstrate vividly the validity of the used methods. To help students become more proficient, each chapter ends with exercises, of which some can be solved effectively by using Mathematica.

Dynamics is what characterizes virtually all phenomenae we face in the real world, and processes that proceed in practically all kinds of inanimate and animate systems, notably social systems. For our purposes dynamics is viewed as time evolution of some characteristic features of the phenomenae or processes under consideration. It is obvious that in virtually all non-trivial problems dynamics can not be neglected, and should be taken into account in the analyses to, first, get insight into the problem consider, and second, to be able to obtain meaningful results. A convenient tool to deal with dynamics and its related evolution over time is to use the concept of a dynamic system which, for the purposes of this volume can be characterized by the input (control), state and output spaces, and a state transition equation. Then, starting from an initial state, we can find a sequence of consecutive states (outputs) under consecutive inputs (controls). That is, we obtain a trajectory. The state transition equation may be given in various forms, exemplified by differential and difference equations, linear or nonlinear, deterministic or stochastic, or even fuzzy (imprecisely specified), fully or partially known, etc. These features can give rise to various problems the analysts may encounter like numerical difficulties, instability, strange forms of behavior (e.g. chaotic), etc. This volume is concerned with some modern tools and techniques which can be useful for the modeling of dynamics. We focus our attention on two important areas which play a key role nowadays, namely automation and robotics, and biological systems. We also add some new applications which can greatly benefit from the availability of effective and efficient tools for modeling dynamics, exemplified by some applications in security systems.

'Analytical System Dynamics: Modeling and Simulation'combines results from analytical mechanics and system dynamics to develop an approach to modeling constrained multidiscipline dynamic systems. This combination yields a modeling technique based on the energy method of Lagrange, which in turn, results in a set of differential-algebraic equations that are suitable for numerical integration. Using the modeling approach presented in this book enables one to model and simulate systems as diverse as a six-link, closed-loop mechanism or a transistor power amplifier.
