Introducing a hyperbolic vortex into a showerhead is a possibility to achieve higher spray velocities for a given discharge without reducing the nozzle diameter. Due to the introduction of air bubbles into the water by the vortex, the spray is pushed from a transition (dripping faucet) regime into a jetting regime, which results in higher droplet and jet velocities using the same nozzle diameter and throughput. The same droplet and jet diameters were realized compared to a showerhead without a vortex. Assuming that the satisfaction of a shower experience is largely dependent on the droplet size and velocity, the implementation of a vortex in the showerhead could provide the same shower experience with 14% less water consumption compared to the normal showerhead. A full optical and physical analysis was presented, and the important chemical parameters were investigated.

Este libro es el resultado de un proyecto de investigación apoyado con fondos de Texas A&M University (TAMU) en los Estados Unidos y el Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT) de México. En él han participado dos equipos de investigadores, uno de TAMU dirigido por Nancy Joe Dyer y el otro por Blanca López de Mariscal del Tecnológico de Monterrey en México. Ambas instituciones cuentan con bibliotecas que albergan colecciones extraordinarias de libros antiguos y raros: la Biblioteca Cushing y la Biblioteca Cervantina. Las colecciones de sermones de estas universidades resultan de especial interés porque a través de ellas podemos destacar la importancia de estas piezas oratorias como ‘texto de cultura’, y analizar su contenido como documento histórico. En ellos descubrimos una parte de los valores religiosos, costumbres y prácticas de vida propias de los novohispanos. Blanca López de Mariscal es directora del Programa de Maestría y Doctorado en Estudios Humanísticos en el Tecnológico de Monterrey, donde imparte los cursos de Literatura novohispana, Teoría literaria y Hermenéutica. Su área de especialidad es la literatura novohispana con un énfasis especial en los relatos de viaje al Nuevo Mundo. Nancy Joe Dyer es profesora emérita de Texas A&M University con especialidades en literatura y lingüística medieval española y novohispana, en particular la épica y las crónicas. Su interés en las crónicas franciscanas del siglo XVI en la Nueva España dio como resultado una edición crítica de los Memoriales de Toribio de Benavente publicada por El Colegio de México, 1996.

Background: The tsetse fly Glossina fuscipes s.l. is responsible for the transmission of approximately 90% of cases of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) or sleeping sickness. Three G. fuscipes subspecies have been described, primarily based upon subtle differences in the morphology of their genitalia. Here we describe a study conducted across the range of this important vector to determine whether molecular evidence generated from nuclear DNA (microsatellites and gene sequence information), mitochondrial DNA and symbiont DNA support the existence of these taxa as discrete taxonomic units. Principal Findings: The nuclear ribosomal Internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) provided support for the three subspecies. However nuclear and mitochondrial sequence data did not support the monophyly of the morphological subspecies G. f. fuscipes or G. f. quanzensis. Instead, the most strongly supported monophyletic group was comprised of flies sampled from Ethiopia. Maternally inherited loci (mtDNA and symbiont) also suggested monophyly of a group from Lake Victoria basin and Tanzania, but this group was not supported by nuclear loci, suggesting different histories of these markers. Microsatellite data confirmed strong structuring across the range of G. fuscipes s.l., and was useful for deriving the interrelationship of closely related populations. Conclusion/Significance: We propose that the morphological classification alone is not used to classify populations of G. fuscipes for control purposes. The Ethiopian population, which is scheduled to be the target of a sterile insect release (SIT) programme, was notably discrete. From a programmatic perspective this may be both positive, given that it may reflect limited migration into the area or negative if the high levels of differentiation are also reflected in reproductive isolation between this population and the flies to be used in the release programme.

Relationships of 13 species of the genus Glossina (tsetse flies) were inferred from mitochondrial (cytochrome oxidase 1, NADH dehydrogenase 2 and 16S) and nuclear (internal transcribed spacer 1 of rDNA) sequences. The resulting phylogeny confirms the monophyly of the morphologically defined fusca, morsitans and palpalis subgenera. Genetic distances between palpalis and morsitans subspecies suggest that their status needs revision. In Particular, cytochrome oxidose 1 sequences showed large geographical differences within G. palpalis palpalis, suggesting the existence of cryptic species within this subspecies. The morphology of palpalis group female genital plates was examined, and individuals were found varying outside the ranges specified by the standard identification keys, making definitive morphological classification impossible. A diagnostic PCR to distinguish G. palpalis palpalis, G. tachinoides and G. palpalis gambiensis based on length differences of internal transcribed spacer 1 sequences is presented.

An adult mink from a farm experiencing 100% mortality in affected animals was submitted for diagnostic examination. Clinical history included signs of respiratory disease, oculonasal discharge, and thickening of footpads. Canine distemper virus and Pneumocystis carinii were identified in lung tissue, suggesting immunosuppresion and secondary infection due to morbillivirus disease.

Three Haemophilus somnus isolates (2a, 3a, and 27b) and one H. somnus-like (13b) isolate from tonsils of commercially reared American bison were compared with 2 known H. somnus isolates from cattle, namely, 2336, shown to cause respiratory disease, and 129Pt, from the prepuce of an asymptomatic bull. All H. somnus isolates, but not the H. somnus-like isolate, required CO2 for growth. Biochemical utilization profiles were identical for bison and bovine H. somnus isolates with the exception of alpha-fucosidase production by isolate 3a. Isolate 27a varied from 2a, 2336 and 129Pt by hemolysis of bovine erythrocytes. Isolate 13b hemolyzed sheep but not bovine or bison erythrocytes and varied from other isolates in biochemical utilization tests. Outer membrane protein profiles of 2a, 3a and 27a were almost identical with those of bovine isolate 2336 and similar to that of 129Pt, but quite different from that of 13b. Western blots of bison isolates were similar to that of the virulent bovine 2336 isolate, including detection of high molecular mass antigens above 100 kDa and the 76 kDa antigens associated with bovine IgG2 Fc binding characteristic of virulent strains, as well as antigens of approximately 78, 60 and 40 kDa. Producers and veterinarians should be aware that H. somnus may be carried by bison and may have potential for causing diseases in bison similar to those described in cattle and sheep.
