2. Writing Together to Foster Wellbeing: Doctoral Writing Groups as Spaces of Wellbeing

Abstract

Candidate wellbeing is recognised as a continual challenge for doctoral programs, with government mandates requiring an institutional response. This article explores the experiences of candidates undertaking intensive writing sessions ('Write-Ins') and their influence on their wellbeing. Exploratory findings demonstrate opportunities for Write-In models to contribute positively to 'Spaces of Wellbeing'. Spaces of Wellbeing theory highlights four dimensions of space that influence wellbeing: capability, security, integrative and therapeutic spaces. Findings show the Write-Ins contributed positively to wellbeing by offering space for candidates to enhance writing productivity, to work to their own pace, to connect with others, and to work flexibly.

Abstract

Interactions between plants and herbivores are central in most ecosystems, but their strength is highly variable. The amount of variability within a system is thought to influence most aspects of plant-herbivore biology, from ecological stability to plant defense evolution. Our understanding of what influences variability, however, is limited by sparse data. We collected standardized surveys of herbivory for 503 plant species at 790 sites across 116° of latitude. With these data, we show that within-population variability in herbivory increases with latitude, decreases with plant size, and is phylogenetically structured. Differences in the magnitude of variability are thus central to how plant-herbivore biology varies across macroscale gradients. We argue that increased focus on interaction variability will advance understanding of patterns of life on Earth.

Contains fulltext : 174892.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), By moving essential body fluids and molecules, motile cilia and flagella govern respiratory mucociliary clearance, laterality determination and the transport of gametes and cerebrospinal fluid. Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an autosomal recessive disorder frequently caused by non-assembly of dynein arm motors into cilia and flagella axonemes. Before their import into cilia and flagella, multi-subunit axonemal dynein arms are thought to be stabilized and pre-assembled in the cytoplasm through a DNAAF2-DNAAF4-HSP90 complex akin to the HSP90 co-chaperone R2TP complex. Here, we demonstrate that large genomic deletions as well as point mutations involving PIH1D3 are responsible for an X-linked form of PCD causing disruption of early axonemal dynein assembly. We propose that PIH1D3, a protein that emerges as a new player of the cytoplasmic pre-assembly pathway, is part of a complementary conserved R2TP-like HSP90 co-chaperone complex, the loss of which affects assembly of a subset of inner arm dyneins.

28. The industrial middle class and the development of sport in a railway town

Abstract

Increased industrial activity during the Victorian period led to the creation of industrial townships such as Crewe, whose growth was stimulated and sustained by the involvement of the London and North Western Railway Company. As in other townships, the paternalism of employers was reflected in company involvement in all aspects of the social, political and economic life of Crewe and the influence that was exerted on the population through the company’s middle-class managers. Men such as manager Francis Webb and company clerk Thomas Abraham had a significant impact on the sporting life of the town, and this paper explores their life courses to chronicle their involvement. These men were not public-school- or university-educated but they shared similar attitudes to sport with their middle-class counterparts in the South, and this paper uses their biographies to suggest that individuals concerned with the organisation of amateur sport across the country adhered to the basics tenets of the amateur ethos. The authors also reinforce the notion that, while the creation of governing bodies was certainly important in structuring late-nineteenth-century sport, the commitment and motivation of the individual was always critical in ensuring that local sport was played ‘in the right way’.

Abstract

Researchers in the field of geoscience have identified several effects on the stability of the surrounding minerals caused by naturally occurring solution species. Organic acids and their conjugate salts have been shown to provide significant influence on a wide range of minerals, generally increasing elemental mobility and aiding in solubilising the solid matrix. Their ability to complex elemental and molecular species, presents interesting opportunities in manipulating systems to achieve outcomes that are otherwise not thermodynamically favoured. Such properties form the basis of some analytical techniques such as the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) used in environmental assessment of waste product stability and the acidified ammonium oxalate (AAO) process used to selectively dissolve poorly crystalline iron oxide phases. These characteristics also present the opportunity for use of these species to aid in industrial dissolution of value-containing minerals (extractive metallurgy). Such an approach provides the basis for the current review. The literature has been reviewed to identify organic acids – particularly low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) – that significantly aid dissolution of relevant minerals, trends in their behaviour and fundamental explanations for these observations. It is also of interest to find evidence that these acids may improve selectivity in a hydrometallurgical application. This review is limited to silicate, carbonate and phosphate minerals as they represent the information relevant to the ongoing research. Formic and acetic acids had the greatest impact on minerals composed of group I and II elements, while citric, oxalic, EDTA and salicylic acids represent the most promising options for transition metal and lanthanide-based minerals. As human resource organizations transform, staff competency requirements alter significantly. The question is: to what? The present study attempts to answer this question using data gathered within a single firm and employing a unique future-oriented, role-focused methodology. The results suggest a competency model with three parts: a relatively small number of core competencies, an even smaller number of leverage competencies applicable to half or more (but not all) of the roles, and a much larger number of competencies that are role-specific. Abstract

Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), often with associated gold, have very few occurrences where they are present in an ore deposit at economically extractable levels. They are classified as both precious and critical metals due to their scarcity and their wide industrial use. With deteriorating socio-political environments in most primary PGM producing countries, PGM deposits that are smaller but in less risky jurisdictions have to be evaluated. However, the lower PGM grades, increased mineralogical complexity of the ores, capital intensity and strict environmental regulations in other international jurisdictions, limit the implementation of conventional metallurgical processing options, particularly smelter-based operations. The conventional smelter-based process options are justifiable for high grade, low chromite, large resource and long life-of-mine operations. In the present paper, we review some of the most recent literature on the predominantly hydrometallurgical approaches to PGM extraction. A number of metallurgical processes that generate either a PGM rich leachate or a residue containing metal values, and the various methods in use for their recoveries from pregnant rich solutions are reviewed. Sixteen process flowsheet variants combining conventional and proprietary unit process technologies are provided, and their process chemistries and key technical operating parameters are compared. Where appropriate, the key thermodynamic and kinetic factors are given and compared.

Abstract

This article presents a report on George John Romanes, F.R.S., who died on May 28, 1894. He was born in 1848 at Kingston, Canada. The name Romanes is not uncommon in Scotland, and it was in the north of Scotland that G.J. Romanes spent the summers of many active years of his manhood. At his place in Rossshire he went into the careful study of material drawn from the ocean at his doors-- jelly-fish, star-fish, and sea-urchins. He was graduated with honors in science at Gonville and Caius College, which he left in 1870, and of which he was afterward made an honorary fellow.

Abstract

A healthy vasculature is an essential component of development and is regulated by different signaling pathways. One of the most critical pathways involved is the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway. Components of this pathway serve as the first marker of primitive endothelial cells and are instrumental in inducing the initial differentiation of endothelial cells and later refining them into either arteries or veins. However, the regulation of VEGF signaling remains a mystery, with most studies focusing on the downstream components of this signaling cascade. New evidence shows that the protein cerebral cavernous malformation 3 (CCM3) is a key regulator of the VEGF pathway, bringing to light a previously unknown component of the VEGF signaling axis and opening the door to an exciting new era of vasculogenic research.

Abstract

Zebrafish have become a popular organism for the study of vertebrate gene function. The virtually transparent embryos of this species, and the ability to accelerate genetic studies by gene knockdown or overexpression, have led to the widespread use of zebrafish in the detailed investigation of vertebrate gene function and increasingly, the study of human genetic disease. However, for effective modelling of human genetic disease it is important to understand the extent to which zebrafish genes and gene structures are related to orthologous human genes. To examine this, we generated a high-quality sequence assembly of the zebrafish genome, made up of an overlapping set of completely sequenced large-insert clones that were ordered and oriented using a high-resolution high-density meiotic map. Detailed automatic and manual annotation provides evidence of more than 26,000 protein-coding genes, the largest gene set of any vertebrate so far sequenced. Comparison to the human reference genome shows that approximately 70% of human genes have at least one obvious zebrafish orthologue. In addition, the high quality of this genome assembly provides a clearer understanding of key genomic features such as a unique repeat content, a scarcity of pseudogenes, an enrichment of zebrafish-specific genes on chromosome 4 and chromosomal regions that influence sex determination., Zebrafish have become a popular organism for the study of vertebrate gene function. 43. Simulation of iron oxide/silica precipitation in the paragoethite process for the removal of iron from acidic zinc leach solutions

Abstract

An investigation of the simultaneous precipitation of iron oxide and silica species from acidic solutions was conducted, simulating the Paragoethite Process, an iron-removal stage employed in zinc hydrometallurgy. Laboratory-based continuous crystallisation experiments were carried under the primary conditions employed in industry, with pH (at 85°C) maintained at 2.65, the combined Fe and Si concentration at 0.1128 M (unless otherwise stated) and Si:Fe ratios varied from 0 to 0.43. The crystal structure of the residues produced was characterised, with the extent of iron and silicate removal quantified and properties relating to aggregate structure also measured. It is shown that the degree of silica polymerisation prior to the precipitation reaction dictates the mechanism of co-precipitation and thereby the properties of the residue. In the presence of polymerised silica, less dense aggregates of finer mean particle size are formed, which has negative implications for dewatering. Conversely, where silica is allowed to polymerise prior to the iron precipitation reaction, a greater proportion of silica is removed from solution. Close control of silica polymerisation in the feed liquor is therefore required to reach a compromise between its beneficial and detrimental influences, and to thereby obtain optimal performance.

Abstract

Intensive efforts have been put into the growth of silicon crystals to suit today's solar cell and integrated circuit requirements. Each step of processing the crystal must also receive concentrated attention to preserve the grown-in perfection and to provide a suitable device-ready wafer at reasonable cost. A comparison is made between solar cell and I.C. requirements on the mechanical processing of silicon from ingot to wafer. Specific defects are described that can ruin the slice or can possibly lead to device degradation. These include grinding cracks, saw exit chips, crow's-foot fractures, edge cracks, and handling scratches.

46. Texture etching of (100) silicon for solar cells

Abstract

A chemical means of creating the proper kind of light collection texture on (100) silicon slices is discussed. Texturing of (100) silicon surfaces in sodium or potassium hydroxides occurs by the growth of a reaction product in a random array of surface sites, which leads to pyramids remaining at the sites after other parts of the surface dissolve away. A new texture-promoting influence, a proximity effect, was discovered in this work. An attempt was made to quantify the various promotional effects. The purpose of the present paper is to: (1) explain in detail the attempt at understanding and quantifying texturing; (2) give an experimental description with observations on the proximity effect and the effect of additions of water glass that were discovered during this work; and (3) show that the precipitate or growth models account for almost all of the known promotional effects.

47. Exit chipping in ID sawing of silicon crystals

Abstract

The processes involved in exit chipping which may occur in the internal diameter diamond sawing of silicon crystals were examined. An interpretation of chipping observations is given in terms of crack propagation as acted upon by the sawing stresses. Since the exit chips are roughly parallel to saw marks, the general locus of the crack must be determined by contact stresses although the exact locus depends on already existing subfractures located in the kerf region which are caused by more than one abrasive particle. The crack starts at either edge since these are weak areas in flexure. In the more extensive "saw fracture", the fracture plane often changes part-way across the slice to be other than parallel to the saw mark because the speed of the crack accelerates beyond the speed of the blade travel; i.e., outstrips the advance of the contact stress field. The influences of various external factors on the opening of the crack are divided into two types: factors that wedge the crack apart and those that bend the slice away from the crystal. From a consideration of these factors, conditions for minimizing exit chipping are defined.

Abstract

Little is known about the evolution, diversity, and functional significance of secondary metabolites in reproductive plant parts, particularly fruits and seeds of plants in natural ecosystems. We compared the concentration and diversity of amides among six tissue types of Piper reticulatum: leaves, roots, flowers, unripe fruit pulp, ripe fruit pulp, and seeds. This represents the first detailed description of amides in P. reticulatum, and we identified 10 major and 3 minor compounds using GC/MS and NMR analysis. We also detected 30 additional unidentified minor amide components, many of which were restricted to one or a few plant parts. Seeds had the highest concentrations and the highest diversity of amides. Fruit pulp had intermediate concentrations and diversity that decreased with ripening. Leaves and roots had intermediate concentrations, but the lowest chemical diversity. In addition, to investigate the potential importance of amide concentration and diversity in plant defense, we measured leaf herbivory and seed damage in natural populations, and examined the relationships between amide occurrence and plant damage. We found no correlations between leaf damage and amide diversity or concentration, and no correlation between seed damage and amide concentration. The only relationship we detected was a negative correlation between seed damage and amide diversity. Together, our results provide evidence that there are strong selection pressures for fruit and seed defense independent of selection in vegetative tissues, and suggest a key role for chemical diversity in fruit-frugivore interactions.
