Abstract

We consider a variation of the Cops and Robber game where the cops can only see the robber when the distance between them is at most a fixed parameter $\ell$. We consider the basic consequences of this definition for some simple graph families, and show that this model is not monotonic, unlike common models where the robber is invisible. We see that cops' strategy consists of a phase in which they need to "see" the robber (move within distance $\ell$ of the robber), followed by a phase in which they capture the robber. In some graphs the first phase is the most resource intensive phase (in terms of number of cops needed), while in other graphs, it is the second phase. Finally, we characterize those trees for which $k$ cops are sufficient to guarantee capture of the robber for all $\ell \ge 1$., Comment: 22 pages

Abstract

The effects of thermal annealing on the optical properties of Mg-doped cubic zincblende GaN epilayers grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on 3C-SiC/Si (001) substrates are investigated. The photoluminescence spectra show near band edge features and a blue luminescence band that depend on Mg concentration, temperature, and excitation power density. Annealing the sample in a N2 atmosphere causes the intensity of the blue band to increase by a factor of 5. Power dependent photoluminescence measurements show a reduction in the laser excitation density required for saturation of the blue band after annealing, indicating an increase in the recombination lifetime. Time decay measurements confirm this increase, which is attributed to a reduction in the concentration of non-radiative defects after annealing. The results presented here are compared to those reported previously for Mg-doped hexagonal wurtzite GaN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

While potential teaching activities in the online classroom are unlimited, an instructor's teaching time is not. As such, it is essential that online instructors prioritize limited time to instructional strategies that have the greatest impact on student learning. A survey of 413 faculty and 2386 students examined faculty and student perceptions about instructional components or strategies that have greatest impact on student learning in the online class- room. Findings revealed significant differences in faculty and student perceptions with faculty giving the highest value ratings to non-instructor generated content and students prioritizing text-based instructional content (regardless of source). Overall, faculty tended to place more value on instructional components compared to students. Students rated faculty interaction and feedback as the most valuable component of their online learning experience. Findings explore how institutions can utilize teaching supplements to support faculty's desire to provide content so that instructional time can focus on interaction and feedback. 21. Theoretical and experimental studies of the effect of clearance and geometry in hydrodynamic journal bearings

Abstract

This study is concerned with oil lubricated, hydrodynamic journal bearings. A test rig was developed which allowed measurements of film pressure, film thickness and journal surface temperature, from the rotating journal. In addition to this it allowed the more commonly measured variables of bearing oil flow and some characteristic bearing temperatures to be friction, monitored. It has been shown that an optimum clearance exists, which maximizes the minimum film thickness. This experimentally measured optimum has been compared with various theoretical estimates, with varying degrees of correlation. An optimum bearing length has been observed which minimizes the bearing friction. This was not predicted by any theoretical results, but a reason for its existence has been suggested. Collecting technology needs from individual programs/vehicles and proposed technology items from individual developers usually results in a mismatch and something that is unaffordable. A strategy to address this problem is outlined with task definitions which will lead to avionics advanced development items that will fit within an overall framework, prioritized to support budgeting, and support the scope of NASA space transportations needs.

47. Determinants of banks’ provisioning policies during the crisis: Evidence from the Chinese banking system

Abstract

Purpose – This paper investigates the discretionary use of loan loss provisions in the Chinese banking sector during the global financial crisis. The objective of this paper is twofold: to add new evidence to the scant literature dealing with a peculiar banking sector, such as the Chinese one, and to shed more light on banks’ provisioning behavior during stressed financial markets conditions. Design/methodology/approach – Using bank-level balance sheet and financial statement data, the authors test for income smoothing and capital management hypotheses, and detect differences in provisioning decisions of listed banks and unlisted financial intermediaries during turbulent financial markets conditions. Findings – The authors find support for the income smoothing hypothesis, but not for the capital management one. Chinese listed banks appear to be less risky and less involved in income smoothing to shift their risk, when compared to unlisted credit institutions. Social implications – The results obtained from this paper help to understand the functioning of bank provisioning regime in the Chinese banking system and how provisioning mechanisms can address the issues associated with the pro-cyclicality of bank capital requirements. Originality/value – Though referred to a particular banking sector, such as the Chinese one, the results of this paper can provide a tremendous incentive to those national and international authorities that are bound to promote forward-looking provisioning practices. These practices would allow banks to build a buffer of reserves to face the downward pressure on earnings and capital associated with periods of worsening credit quality.
