40. The Financial Affairs of 1860 Wisconsin Newspapers: An Analysis of the Manuscript Products of Industry Returns from the U.S. Census of 1860.

Abstract

A study was undertaken to describe the financial affairs of 49 Wisconsin newspapers enumerated in the 1860 United States Census of Products of Industry schedules. Specific information was sought concerning the cost of establishing a newspaper, the cost of materials and supplies, the number of employees and their pay, the value of the newspaper and job printing work produced, and the financial returns of the newspaper-publishing business. The data were then compared with similar data on all businesses in Wisconsin in 1860. The results revealed that the newspaper establishment was smaller than other businesses in all input and output measures except the number of employees. Newspaper publication and job printing done in association with publication were labor-intensive businesses; therefore, the payroll was the larger proportion of the total actual costs of operation. As production increased, however, the value of raw materials increased more than did payroll. The operating costs for doing newspaper publication and job work were greater than initial investment, and the costs of newspaper production increased per unit of total output at a greater rate than did job printing costs, indicating that newspaper production was relatively more expensive to do than job work. As part of an examination of whether newspaper chains help member papers with legal problems, this paper reviews a series of courtroom and court-record access cases involving the largest newspaper chain in the United States, the Gannett Company. The paper attempts to determine the extent to which Gannett has financially and legally helped its member papers bring law suits involving freedom of the press issues, whether the cases discussed represent a Gannett policy concerning the seeking of access to courtrooms and court records, what the nature and purpose of that policy are, its consequences for the development of mass media law, and the potential benefits to Gannett. 42. The Cost of Prior Restraint: 'U. S. v. The Progressive.'

Abstract

Increased litigation and rising litigation costs threaten the future of newspapers and magazines. A case study was conducted to determine the costs and effects of "United States v. 'The Progressive,'" a prior restraint case over the publication in 1979 of an article on the hydrogen bomb. "The Progressive," which operates at a deficit, spent almost a quarter of a million dollars defending itself. Costs of time and staff energy were even greater, threatening the continuation of the magazine. Although a First Amendment case, few in the media came to the aid of "The Progressive." Neither did circulation increase as much as in a normal year. Although libel and First Amendment insurance have been introduced recently, there is serious doubt whether small publications could afford such coverage, or even whether an insurance company would accept a controversial publication as a client. Civil liberties and professional organizations cannot do much more than assist in a few major cases, as they did in that of "The Progressive," providing "pro bono" work and filing "amicus" briefs. Such a state of affairs may result in newspapers and magazines too timid to risk publishing controversial material. A system of financing media litigation is needed to protect publications. (JL)

Abstract

This paper examines the facts of the Knops case, a Wisconsin Supreme Court decision that deals with freedom of the press, underground newspapers, and reporter's privilege (not to reveal a news source), and surveys the news coverage of the Knops case to evaluate the stance of the Wisconsin press in regard to reporter's privilege. The paper concludes that the Wisconsin media coverage of the Knops case was extensive but little better than no coverage at all, since the media did not accept responsibility for educating the public about the value, to the public, of reporter's privilege or about the challenge to freedom of the press that was created by the decision in the Knops case. 44. Taking Stock, Placing Orders: A Historiographic Essay on the Business History of the Newspaper.

Abstract

This historiographic essay discusses and seeks to begin to address the need for a business history of the newspaper. The paper's first section clarifies the terms "business history,""economic history,""political history," and "history of economics," (which the paper suggests have been used interchangeably in the past despite the fact that they are not synonymous). This section extrapolates from the principal discipline of business history to construct a framework for the issues the business history of the newspaper would address. The paper's second section (through a partial review of the literature which concentrates on the scattered journal articles that historians frequently seem to overlook) reveals that while a substantial amount of work does need to be done in the business history of the newspaper, a body of knowledge on a broad range of the important issues exists and awaits historians' attention, criticism, and additions. One hundred eighty-eight notes are included. An appendix contains a six-page bibliography of the research published in scholarly journals. (SR)

In the eighth edition of this directory, scholars can find appropriate journals in which to publish their work and learn how to prepare manuscripts for publication. The directory catalogs the manuscript requirements and review processes of 178 English-language journals published in the United States and countries spanning the globe from South Africa to Japan and Sweden to Australia. Some of the journals in the directory focus on journalism, mass communication, or speech communication as their primary concerns; others have addressed some aspect of communication in the context of another discipline such as law or sociology. The goal of the directory is to list all the journals most mass communication scholars would consider the principle forums for scholarship in the field and to list as many others as possible that represent the eclectic or interdisciplinary nature of the study of communication. Abstract

Media framing of infant feeding has the ability to influence knowledge and views of the barriers, benefits, and solutions inherent in breastfeeding or formula-feeding. This study examined how seven popular U.S. parenting, general women's, and African American magazines framed breastfeeding and formula-feeding messages to determine whether a sense-making approach was used and the extent to which visual images portrayed feeding practices. Analysis included 615 articles published from 1997 to 2003 that referred to infant feeding. Text and images were analyzed. The magazines provided more information on breastfeeding than formula feeding. Parenting magazines included more advice than barriers or benefits. African American magazines presented more breastfeeding benefits, and general women's magazines contained the least infant-feeding information. Messages were focused on individualized breastfeeding barriers and advice, seldom covered social and environmental issues, and placed much of the responsibility of infant feeding on the mother, while the role of social and partner support was diminished. Bottle-feeding images were nearly as common as breastfeeding images. Findings can be used by public health practitioners to increase the likelihood of reaching certain target audiences through popular magazines. KEYWORDS. Abstract

Newspaper publishing as a US business enterprise began in the 19th century. It was encouraged by the rise of journalism research in the academe and journalism courses which trained journalists in business, editorial and mechanical aspects of newspaper publishing. From the 1960s to the 1980s, newspaper publishing became a private enterprise whose main concern was to uphold journalism ethics which sometimes conflicted with business interests. A vocabulary of historical and economic terms pertaining to newspaper publishing, an evaluation of existing research on the newspaper industry, related literature and resource materials are presented.
