CFRD is associated with poorer clinical outcomes, including accelerated pulmonary function decline and excess morbidity. The management of CFRD is complex and differs from that of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus such that clinicians responsible for the care of people with CFRD must work closely with colleagues across a number of different specialities and disciplines. This review aims to discuss why a multi-disciplinary approach is important and how it can be harnessed to optimize the care of people with CFRD.Keywords: insulin, cystic fibrosis, hyperglycemia, nursing, diagnostics, teamwork

4. Detoxing the Trauma of Academic Writing for Black Scholars: Vulnerability, Authenticity, and Healing

Abstract

This article first contextualizes the authors' perspectives and purpose to aid the reader in situating the narratives of three Black scholars. Their stories are woven together to help other Black scholars navigate and detox from the trauma of academic writing in higher education. Collectively, the authors, via a co-constructed dialogic space, offer inclusive healing practices and strategies to maintain Black scholars in the academic writing process.

5. A Barrier or Conduit? Analyzing the Perception of Support Services in Higher Education on the Academic Persistence of Black Male Students

Abstract

This study aimed to illuminate the perceptions of whether higher education support services function as a barrier or conduit to Black male undergraduate students' academic persistence. The relationship between 13 Black male undergraduate students and their higher education institutions was examined. The researcher proposed a model of qualitative exploratory methodology. This study was motivated by three research questions: (1) What resources are instrumental in helping Black males persist academically? (2) How do Black male students navigate and make sense of institutional support for their academic persistence? and (3) In what ways do Black male students perceive the quality of the support services at their institution? Williams (2015) queried Black brains matter: why are graduation rates so low? This question is a fundamental inquiry in higher education. We argue that a new generation of research in this area needs to address the extended problem: how Black male students perceive the quality of the support services at their academic institutions. Despite literature that suggested and supported Black male students' academic persistence, there was never an exploration into how Black male students perceived higher education support services in conjunction with their academic persistence. Qualitative data consisted of individual interviews with 13 Black male undergraduate students and one focus group with 6 of the same 13 participants. Once collected, transcribed, and analyzed, a thorough thematic analysis revealed six emergent themes. The results indicated that Black male students perceived higher education support services to support their academic persistence. 6. Outpatient Psychiatric Care for Youth with Suicide Risk: Who Is Offered Dialectical Behavioural Therapy?

Abstract

Background: Dialectical behaviour therapy for adolescents (DBT-A) has recently been adapted and tested as an intervention for suicidal youth in randomized trials. Although studies have demonstrated the efficacy of this intervention for suicidal behaviours, research examining which youth get offered DBT-A in clinical practice is lacking. Objective: This study aimed to determine the proportion of suicidal youth that were offered DBT-A in a child and youth psychiatric outpatient clinic, and how selected clinical features differ between youth offered and not offered DBT-A. Method: Medical records of 44 youth were reviewed based on: (1) initial mental health intake assessment between January and June 2015, (2) age 13-16 years, and (3) active suicidal ideation (SI) with or without recent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI)-or suicide attempt (SA). Twenty-four consecutive months of demographic, diagnostic, and treatment data were reviewed retrospectively. Results: 79.5% (n=35) of the sample endorsed SI, 63.6% (n=28) endorsed NSSI, and 47.7% (n=21) reported a past SA. 47.7% (n=21) were offered DBT-A. There was a significant relationship between offering of DBT-A and endorsement of multiple suicidal risk symptoms at baseline. Youth offered DBT-A reported significantly more types of adverse childhood experiences than those not offered DBT-A. Conclusion: Youth mental health clinicians appear to preferentially offer DBT-A to youth who report multiple suicidal risk symptoms and adverse childhood experiences. This profile is consistent with populations of youth enrolled in randomized trials of DBT-A. A large proportion of suicidal youth are not offered DBT-A, suggesting that clinicians consider multiple factors in treatment decision-making.

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. 13. Yes, We Are Still Talking about Diversity: Diversity Education as a Catalyst for Transformative, Culturally Relevant, and Reflective Preservice Teacher Practices

Abstract

Using data from preservice teachers enrolled in a diversity course in a predominantly White teacher education program, researchers uncovered that diversity education was indeed a catalyst for preservice teachers to increase knowledge of diversity and their understanding of the process of critically reflecting on their teaching and learning practices. The findings revealed that the teachers not only taught with cultural relevance in mind but also adopted a philosophy of education that incorporates social reconstructionism and transformative learning, viewing themselves as social justice advocates for children and families.

Abstract

We report branching fraction measurements for exclusive decays of charged and neutral B mesons into two-body final states containing a charmonium meson. We use a sample of 22.72±0.36 million BB̄ events collected between October 1999 and October 2000 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage rings at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The charmonium mesons considered here are J/Ψ, Ψ(2S), and Χ c1and the light meson in the decay is either a K, K*, or π 0. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

New measurements of (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) meson production rates from B decays and from (Formula presented) continuum events near the (Formula presented) resonance are presented. Using 20.8 (Formula presented) of data on the (Formula presented) resonance and 2.6 (Formula presented) off-resonance, we find the inclusive branching fractions (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and t he third is due to the (Formula presented) branching fraction uncertainty. The production cross sections (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) are measured at center-of-mass energies about 40 MeV below the (Formula presented) mass. The branching fractions (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) are determined from the (Formula presented) momentum spectra. Abstract

New measurements of Ds+ and Ds*+ meson production rates from B decays and from qq̄ continuum events near the Y(4S) resonance are presented. Using 20.8 fb-1 of data on the Y(4S) resonance and 2.6 fb-1 off-resonance, we find the inclusive branching fractions B(B→Ds+ X)=(10.93±0.19±0.58±2.73)% and B(B→Ds*+X)=(7.9±0.8±0.7 ±2.0)%, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the Ds+→φπ+ branching fraction uncertainty. The production cross sections σ(e+e- →Ds+X) × B(Ds+→φπ+)=7.55±0.20 ±0.34 pb and σ(e+e-→Ds *±X) × B(Ds+→φπ+) = 5.8±0.7±0.5 pb are measured at center-of-mass energies about 40 MeV below the Y(4S) mass. The branching fractions ΣB(B→Ds(*)+ D̄(*))=(5.07±0.14±0.30±1.27)% and ∑B(B→Ds*+D̄(*)) =(4.1±0.2±0.4±1.0)% are determined from the Ds(*)+ momentum spectra. The mass difference m(Ds+)-m(D+)=98.4±0.1 ±0.3 MeV/c2 is also measured.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to the eigenstate, and an updated measurement of the charge asymmetry in B0→K+π-~ decays. In a sample of 33 million Y(4S)→BB̄ decays collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric B factory, we find 65-11+12 and 217±18 K+π- candidates and measure the asymmetry parameters Sππ=0.03-0.56+0.53±0.111, Cππ=-0.25-0.17+0.45±0.14, and AKπ = -0.07±0. 08±0.02, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We search for direct CP violation in charmless hadronic B decays observed in a sample of about 22.7 million B B̄ pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We measure the following charge asymmetries: ACp(B ±→η′K±=-0.11±0. 11±0.02, ACP(B±→ωπ ±) = -0.01 -0.31+0.29±0.03, ACPB±→φK±)= -0.05±0.20±0.03, ACP(B± → φK*±)= -0.430.30+0.36±0.06, and ACP(B0→φ K*0)=0.00±0.27±0.03. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The branching fractions of the exclusive decays B0-->K(*0)gamma and B+-->K(*+)gamma are measured from a sample of (22.74+/-0.36)x10(6) BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. We find B (B0-->K(*0)gamma) = [4.23+/-0.40(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5), B(B+-->K(*+)gamma) = [3.83+/-0.62(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5) and constrain the CP-violating charge asymmetry to be -0.170K(*)gamma)

Abstract

Abstract

We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to the eigenstate, and an updated measurement of the charge asymmetry in B0→K+π-~ decays. In a sample of 33 million Y(4S)→BB̄ decays collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric B factory, we find 65-11+12 and 217±18 K+π- candidates and measure the asymmetry parameters Sππ=0.03-0.56+0.53±0.111, Cππ=-0.25-0.17+0.45±0.14, and AKπ = -0.07±0. 08±0.02, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a limit on the branching fraction for the decay B0-->gammagamma using data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e+e- collider. Based on the observation of one event in the signal region, out of a sample of 21.3x10(6) e+e--->Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays, we establish an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0-->gammagamma)

Abstract

We present a measurement of the decay amplitudes in B-->J/psiK*(892) channels using 20.7 fb(-1) of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at PEP-II. We measure a P-wave fraction R(perpendicular) = (16.0 +/- 3.2 +/- 1.4)% and a longitudinal polarization fraction (59.7 +/- 2.8 +/- 2.4)%. The measurement of a relative phase that is neither 0 nor pi, phi = 2.50 +/- 0.20 +/-0.08 radians, favors a departure from the factorization hypothesis. Although the decay B-->/psiK(pi) proceeds mainly via K*(892), there is also evidence for K2*(1430) and K(pi) S-wave contributions.

Abstract

We present the results of searches for B decays to charmless two-body final states containing eta(') or omega mesons, based on 20.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector. We find the branching fractions Beta(B(+)-->eta(')K(+)) = (70+/-8+/-5) x 10(-6), Beta(B(0)-->eta(')K(0)) = (42(+13)(-11) +/- 4) x 10(-6), and Beta(B(+)-->omega pi(+)) = (6.6(+2.1)(-1.8) +/- 0.7) x 10(-6), where the first error quoted is statistical and the second is systematic. We give measurements of four additional modes for which the 90% confidence level upper limits are Beta(B(+)-->eta(')pi(+)) < 12 x 10(-6), Beta(B(+)-->omega K(+)) < 4 x 10(-6), Beta(B(0)-->omega K(0)) < 13 x 10(-6), and Beta(B(0)-->omega pi(0)) < 3 x 10(-6).

Abstract

The B(0) and B(+) meson lifetimes have been measured in e(+)e(-) annihilation data collected in 1999 and 2000 with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. Events are selected in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic final state while the second B meson is reconstructed inclusively. A combined fit to the B(0) and the B(+) decay time difference distributions yields tau(B(0)) = 1.546+/-0.032(stat)+/-0.022(syst) ps, tau(B(+)) = 1.673+/-0.032(stat)+/-0.023(syst) ps, and tau(B(+))/tau(B(0)) = 1.082+/-0.026(stat)+/-0.012(syst).

Abstract

We have observed the decays B--> phiK and phiK(*) in a sample of over 45 million B mesons collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider. The measured branching fractions are B(B+--> phiK+) = (7.7(+1.6)(-1.4)+/-0.8)x10(-6), B(B0--> phiK0) = (8.1(+3.1)(-2.5)+/-0.8)x10(-6), B(B+--> phiK(*+)) = (9.7(+4.2)(-3.4)+/-1.7)x10(-6), and B(B0--> phiK(*0)) = (8.7(+2.5)(-2.1)+/-1.1)x10(-6). We also report the upper limit B(B+--> phipi(+))

Abstract

The production of J/psi mesons in continuum e(+)e(-) annihilations has been studied with the BABAR detector at energies near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. The mesons are distinguished from J/psi production in B decays through their center-of-mass momentum and energy. We measure the cross section e(+)e(-)-->J/psi X to be 2.52+/-0.21+/-0.21 pb. We set a 90% C.L. upper limit on the branching fraction for direct Upsilon(4S)-->J/psi X decays at 4.7 x 10(-4).

Abstract

We present measurements, based on a sample of approximately 23x10(6) BB pairs, of the branching fractions and a search for CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into two-body final states of kaons and pions. We find the branching fractions B(B0-->pi(+)pi(-)) = (4.1+/-1.0+/-0.7)x10(-6), B(B0-->K+pi(-)) = (16.7+/-1.6+/-1.3)x10(-6), B(B+-->K+pi(0)) = (10.8(+2.1)(-1.9)+/-1.0)x10(-6), B(B+-->K0pi(+)) = (18.2(+3.3)(-3.0)+/-2.0)x10(-6), B(B0-->K0pi(0)) = (8.2(+3.1)(-2.7)+/-1.2)x10(-6). We also report 90% confidence level upper limits for B meson decays to the pi(+)pi(0), K+K-, and K0K+ final states. In addition, charge asymmetries have been found to be consistent with zero, where the statistical precision is in the range of +/-0.10 to +/-0.18, depending on the decay mode.

Abstract

We present an updated measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. This result uses an additional sample of Upsilon(4S) decays collected in 2001, bringing the data available to 32 x 10(6) BB macro pairs. We select events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2 beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result sin2 beta = 0.59+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.05(syst) establishes CP violation in the B(0) meson system. We also determine absolute value of lambda = 0.93+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.03(syst), consistent with no direct CP violation.

36. Factors Related to Perceived Status in the Campus Community for First Generation Students at an HBCU

Abstract

Research that has examined the complexities of within-group difference as they related to socioeconomic diversity has been necessary to fully understand the myriad of factors that affected college experience, persistence, and graduation rates of Black students not just at predominately White institutions (PWI's), but also at the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The purpose for this current study was to explore what factors first generational students (FGS) in comparison to non-first generational students (non-FGS) use to inform their perceived social status in an HBCU community. One-hundred and thirty-four (57 males and 77 females) economically diverse Black American emerging adults, were recruited from 7 classes to participate in a descriptive survey. A series of Pearson's Product-Moment correlations revealed that FGS' perceived status in the community was related to both academic performance (r = 0.31) and esteem (r = 0.44) in comparison to non-FGS; their sociability (r = 0.32) (including their appearance esteem (r = 0.38)) was related to their perceived status. Findings suggest that FGS used tangible forms of capital to infer status, whereas non-FGS used more intangible forms of capital.

37. Moving from College Aspiration to Attainment: Learning from One College Access Program

Abstract

Using data from a survey of 75 parents and high school students who were eligible for a college access program, this article examines parents' and students' college aspirations and their confidence in fulfilling that goal. The authors argue that pre-college preparation programs can benefit from the non-economic forms of capital that these families undoubtedly have. Moreover, students' and their parents' confidence in college aspirations are often situated in deeply-rooted beliefs in the ultimate benefits of education for individual, familial, and communal uplift. Understanding the valuable role of social and cultural capital in the college goals of first-generation and low-income youth will help college preparation programs build stronger partnerships with their students and families as they help them move from college aspirations to attainment. Abstract

Researchers asked 17 participants in a job-training program to describe their personal struggles following an economic restructuring. Examined through a critical theoretical lens, findings indicate that the learners enrolled in the program to reclaim security, dignity, meaningful work, and caring relationships. Program planners at community colleges are therefore urged to employ democratic program planning models, ask learners about their educational needs as they see them, and listen compassionately to their responses. 43. Disappearing into the Unknown: The State of Black Male Achievement in American Public Schools

Abstract

There is a national crisis in American education. Low test scores, inadequate schools, poverty, and disenfranchisement have relegated Black male students to the margins of this democratic republic. Consequently, the lack of participation of Black male students is the most important issue facing American education. If this issue is not addressed with alacrity, the central tenets of this democratic nation will decay. Undoubtedly, this nation can no longer ignore such a crisis. It is time for concerned constituencies to conduct a careful examination of the socio-cultural, political, and economic consequences of an education system that is failing a large segment of the American populace. This nation can no longer accept failure, and the research is conclusive, a lack of participation at the K-12 level results in limited to no participation at the postsecondary level. In this article, the author poses the question: how do we begin to crawl out of this darkness of an American education system that is failing its Black male students? In her evaluation, she offers three suggestions to greatly reduce the likelihood of Black males disappearing into the unknown.
