Novel power exhaust solutions are being developed to address the challenge of integrating a high performance fusion core plasma with a well-protected divertor, if the single null configuration does not scale to a reactor device. This work aims to elucidate the physics mechanisms responsible for the reduction in peak target heat flux in configurations with multiple X-points. Experimental studies on tokamak à configuration variable in the Snowflake Minus configuration are extended to a novel configuration with three nearby divertor X-points, termed a Jellyfish, allowing us to enhance the expected effects of an additional divertor X-point. These studies are complemented by simplified 1D scrape-off layer (SOL) modeling with the SPLEND1D code and by interpretative modeling with the edge transport code EMC3-EIRENE applied to the Snowflake Minus, to further elucidate some of the key underlying processes. We find that configurations with multiple nearby X-points, and increased near-SOL connection length, exhibit reductions in peak target heat flux and an earlier detachment onset compared to a reference single null configuration, consistent with expectations from SPLEND1D. A strong correlation is experimentally observed between the radially localized radiated power and connection length. While this does not necessarily map to higher total divertor radiative losses for configurations with multiple X-points, it can, at least, provide some control over the radial position of the spatial radiation distribution. Experiments are shown to exhibit radial striations in the emissivity of multiple spectral lines in the inter-null region in these configurations. Although comparisons with EMC3-EIRENE simulations support enhanced cross field transport in the inter-null region, additional transport physics is required in the model to obtain a quantitative match with experiment. No significant differences in divertor-core compatibility are attributed to the presence of additional divertor X-points. However, impurity source optimization is required in such geometries to ensure a low core impurity content is maintained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study employs the established momentum transport analysis at ASDEX Upgrade [Zimmermann et al., Nucl. Fusion 63, 124003 (2023)] to investigate the parametric variations of the momentum transport coefficients in the core of H-mode plasmas. These experimental results are compared to a comprehensive database of gyrokinetic calculations. Generally, good agreement between predicted and measured diffusive and convective transport coefficients is found. The predicted and measured Prandtl numbers correlate most dominantly with the magnetically trapped particle fraction. The experimentally inferred pinch numbers strongly depend on the logarithmic density gradient and magnetic shear, consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Coriolis pinch. The intrinsic torque from residual stress in the inner core is small, scales with the local logarithmic density gradient, and the data indicate a possible sign reversal. In the outer periphery of the core, the intrinsic torque is always co-current-directed and scales with the pressure gradient. This is consistent with prior experimental findings and global, non-linear gyrokinetic predictions. It suggests that profile shearing effects generate the intrinsic torque in the inner core. Toward the outer core, most likely, effects from E × B -shearing become more influential. These results offer the first comprehensive picture of this transport channel in the core plasma and contribute to validating the corresponding theoretical understanding. The derived scaling laws are used to construct a reduced momentum transport model, which has been validated against an additional dataset. Cette note est destinée à commenter la représentation adoptée sur la « Carte géologique et structurale des bassins tertiaires du domaine méditerranéen » publiée par l'IFP, le CNEXO et l'INAG. On y précise les principes de réalisation, le but principal étant de situer les informations marines disponibles dans leur cadre géologique s les données en mer sont principalement relatives aux séries quaternaires et tertiaires récentes : seules celles-ci ont été détaillées sur la carte et inscrites dans le cadre structural des bassins. Dans une première partie, des commentaires techniques précisent les différentes représentations utilisées à terre et en mer, situent les simplifications effectuées et donnent un aperçu sur la bibliographie et l'évolution des connaissances. La seconde partie permet de survoler rapidement les problèmes des bassins tertiaires méditerranéens par quelques commentaires géologiques qui donnent une esquisse de l'histoire de ces bassins. En conclusion, on essaie de faire ressortir les points importants qui se dégagent après lecture attentive de la carte. The aim of this article is ta comment on the representation adopted for the « Geological and Structural Map of Tertiary Basins in the Mediterranean Domain » published by IFP, CNEXO and INAG. The main goals are shaded, with the principal one being to situate available marine data in their geological setting. Offshore data mainly have ta do with recent Quartenary and Tertiary series which are the only cries itemized on the map and included within the structural setting of the basins. The first part contains technical comments on the different representations used, both onshore and offshore, to situate the simplifications used and to give some insight into the bibliography and how our understanding has evolved. The second part makes a brief review of problems relating to Mediterranean Tertiary basins with the help of various geological comments sketching out the history of these basins. To conclude, an attempt is made to bring out the important points revealed by a careful reading of the map.

Le Comité d'Etudes Pétrolières Marines (CEPM) et le Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Océans (CNEXO) ont mené une série d'études sous-marines des escarpements ioniens pour en définir l'origine, l'âge et l'évolution. Les résultats présentés ici concernent l'escarpement de Malte, le mont Alfeo et les monts de Médine à l'ouest et au sud-ouest du bassin Ionien profond. Ils comprennent les données bathymétriques sous forme d'une carte à 1/100 000 hors texte, l'analyse morphologique des reliefs, les déterminations stratigraphiques effectuées sur les échantillons récoltés en dragages, carottages ou en plongées, l'analyse structurale à partir de profils de sismique réflexion et des plongées, et l'étude de la subsidence depuis le Trias supérieur à partir des forages réels du plateau maltais et des forages fictifs du rebord de l'escarpement de Malte. Les conclusions font ressortir : - l'existence de séries carbonatées de plate-forme d'âge Jurassique inférieur pour l'escarpement de Malte et le mont Alfeo, et Crétacé inférieur pour les monts de Médine; - un changement paléogéographique majeur : à partir du Jurassique supérieur pour l'escarpement de Malte et à partir de l'Albien pour ceux de Médine; - l'existence de séries condensées à dater de ce changement paléogéographique et d'une érosion constante jusqu'à l'Actuel, érosion dont les processus variés ont de nombreuses conséquences sur la sédimentation de tels reliefs; - quatre phases de subsidence essentielles : Jurassique moyen, limite Crétacé inférieur-Crétacé supérieur, Miocène inférieur et moyen, Plio-Quaternaire. La parenté du mont Alfeo avec l'escarpement de Malte a été bien reconnue, par contre, les monts de Médine ne semblent se rattacher à leur histoire qu'à partir du Crétacé supérieur et ont sans doute une évolution comparable au plateau cyrénien. Ces escarpements, comme les autres escarpements ioniens, doivent leurs caractéristiques, une forte déclivité et une couverture sédimentaire peu épaisse à une morphogénèse complexe car polyphasée. En effet, en plus du facteur lithologique (parois calcaires imposantes), il y a un facteur tectonique essentiel : l'évolution d'une marge continentale mésozoïque réactivée par des phases tectoniques plus récentes, essentiellement Miocène et Plio-Quaternaire. C'est cette originalité qui distingue l'escarpement de Malte et les monts de Médine des autres marges méditerranéennes occidentales et qui permet leur comparaison avec d'autres marges continentales, atlantiques par exemple. The Comité d'Etudes Pétrolières Marines (CEPM) and the Centre National pour I'Exploitation des Océans (CNEXO) have carried out a series of subsea surveys of Ionian escarpments to define their origin, age and evolution. The results given here concern the Malta escarpment, the Alfeo and Medina seamounts west and southwest of the deep Ionian basin. They include bathymetric data in the form of a 1:100,000th map accompanying the text, a morphological analysis of reliefs, stratigraphic determinations performed on samples gathered by dredging, coring or diving, a structural analysis from seismic-reflection profiles and dives, and a study of subsidence since the Upper Triassic from actual boreholes drilled in the Maltese shelf and fictitious boreholes on the edge of the Malta escarpment. The conclusions bring out:(a) the existence of calcareous platform series of early Jurassic age for the Malta escarpment and the Alfeo seamount and of early Cretaceous age for the Medina seamounts;(b) a major paleogeographic change starting in the late Jurassic for the Malta escarpment and in the Albian for the Medina seamounts;(c) the development of condensed series dating from this paleogeographic change and the presence of constant erosion until the Present, an erosion in which the various processes have numerous consequences on the sedimentation of such reliefs;(d) four main subsidence phases: middle Jurassic, early Cretaceous/late Cretaceous boundary, early and middle Miocene, Plio-Quaternary. The relationship of the Alfeo seamount with the Malta escarpment has been clearly recognized. On the contrary, the Medina seamounts seem to be connected to the Malta escarpment only starting in the late Cretaceous and probably has an early evolution comparable to that of the Cyrenean shelf. These escarpments, like the other Ionian escarpments, owe their features, i. e. steep slopes and thin sedimentary cover, to a complex multiphased morphogenesis. In addition to the lithological factor (high limestone walls), there is an essential tectonic factor, i. e. the evolution of a Mesozoic continental margin reactivated by more recent tectonic phases, essentially in the Miocene and Plio-Quaternary. This is the originality that distinguishes the Malta Escarpment and Medina seamounts from other western Mediterranean margins and that enables them to be compared with other continental margins, e. g. Atlantic.

Cette note est destinée à commenter l' « esquisse photogéologique du domaine méditerranéen ; grands traits structuraux à partir des images du satellite Landsat-I » réalisée au cours d'un travail mené en commun par l'Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) et le Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Océans (CNEXO) avec la collaboration de l'Institut National d'Astronomie et de Géophysique (INAG), document publié par les Éditions Technip. Ces commentaires précisent d'abord le but de cette nouvelle carte qui vise à compléter la « Carte géologique et structurale des bassins tertiaires du domaine méditerranéen » établie précédemment : l'information contenue dans les images du satellite artificiel Landsat-I et son interprétation permettent en effet de préciser les grands traits structuraux du domaine émergé voisin des bassins profonds et des marges de la Méditerranée. Un grand nombre de linéaments peuvent être reconnus ; leur orientation et leur répartition dans les différentes provinces géologiques n'est pas quelconque. Les commentaires eux-mêmes comportent deux parties : - des commentaires techniques qui précisent les caractéristiques des images utilisées, la méthode de travail, le choix de la représentation adoptée lors de la réalisation de la carte ; - des commentaires géologiques qui analysent les difficultés de l'interprétation, la signification des linéaments cartographiés et qui reprennent, région par région, les principales conclusions que l'on peut tirer de cette étude pour la connaissance des marges de la Méditerranée. En conclusion on insiste d'une part sur l'intérêt de cette technique d'observation que constituent les images prises depuis des stations orbitales (télédétection) et d'autre part sur la nécessité, pour interpréter l'information recueillie, de travaux supplémentaires : sur documents géologiques ou géophysiques existants, sur le terrain, enfin à partir des bandes magnétiques enregistrées par le satellite. Les levers bathymétriques détaillés effectués en mer Ionienne pour préparer la campagne de plongées Cyana ont révélé l'existence de dépressions fermées au pied des grands escarpements qui dominent le bassin profond. Ces dépressions, de 0,8 à 1,8 km de diamètre et dont la profondeur peut dépasser 100 m, sont particulièrement nettes au pied de l'escarpement de Malte dans les grands rentrants de la falaise. Elles sont plus discrètes au pied des amphithéâtres du rebord méridional du plateau Apulien. Aucune figure de ce type n'est observée au pied des falaises des Monts de Médine ou de Cyrène, pourtant aussi escarpées. Une origine volcanique avec caldeira effondrée est rejetée. L'hypothèse de collapse diapirique due au sel messinien est discutée et tenue pour peu probable. Le rôle de la dissolution de matériel carbonaté mésozoïque, hypothèse karstique, ne semble pas devoir non plus être retenue pour expliquer les dépressions elles-mêmes bien que ce processus ait pu être déterminant dans le façonnement des amphithéâtres qui les surmontent. Finalement les processus dynamiques récents semblent mieux rendre compte des morphologies observées, celles-ci se développant préférentiellement au débouché des canyons principaux où l'erosion et le transport sont maximum. The detailed bathymetric surveys made in the lonian Sea to prepare the Cyana diving campaign revealed the existence of closed depressions at the foot of the large scarps dominating the deep basin. These depressions, which are 0. 8 to 1. 8 km in diameter and may be more than 100 m deep, are particularly clearcut at the foot of the Malta scarp in the large recesses in the cliff. They are more discreet at the foot of the amphitheaters on the southern edge of the Apulian plateau. No form of this type has been found at the foot of the cliffs of Medina or Cyrene Sea Mounts which, nonetheless, are also scarped. A volcanic origin with a collapsed caldera is not valid. The hypothesis of a diapiric collapse due to Messinian salt is discussed and assumed to be not very probable. The rote of the dissolution of Mesozoic carbonate material, i. e. the karstic hypothesis, does not seem valid either to explain the depressions themselves, even through this process may have been determinant in shaping the amphitheaters overlooking them. Lastly, recent dynamic processes seems to be better explanations of the morphologies observed which develop preferentially at the outlet of the main canyons where erosion and transport are at their maximum.

Cet article rassemble les données recueillies lors des campagnes Escarmed réalisées par le Comité d'Études Pétrolières Marines (CEPM) et le Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Océans (CNEXO) et les situe dans une monographie régionale dans le cadre des connaissances sur la plate-forme sous-marine des Pouilles ou plateau Apulien. On y trouvera : - deux cartes bathymétriques à 1/100 000, détaillées du rebord sud du plateau Apulien et de l'escarpement de Céphalonie ; - une analyse de la morphologie de ces escarpements, essentiellement contrôlée par la tectonique active et une érosion considérable des falaises carbonatées ; - un rappel des données sismiques et stratigraphiques qui montrent une subsidence de ce domaine durant tout le Crétacé supérieur ; - une discussion sur l'histoire de ces reliefs, très différente des autres marges de la mer Ionienne; en particulier, on verra que la tectonique décrochante déterminée par la géodynamique globale de la Méditerranée, joue un rôle majeur et que la subsidence tertiaire s'accroît considérablement vers le domaine Ionien profond. This article contains the data gathered during the Escarmed campaigns carried out by the Comité d'études Pétrolières Marines (CEPM) and the Centre National pour I'Exploitation des Océans (CNEXO) and situates their interpretation within the framework of what is known about the Apulian subsea platform or the Apulian plateau. It includes: (a) Two 1:100,000th bathymetric maps giving details of the southern rim of the Apulian plateau and the Cephalonian scarp. (b) An analysis of the morphology of these scarps, mainly governed by the active tectonics and considerable erosion of the carbonate cliffs. (c) A review of seismic and stratigraphic data showing a subsidence of this domain during the entire late Cretaceous. (d) A discussion of the history of these reliefs, which are very different from the other margins of the Ionian Sea; in particular, it is shown that the transcurrent-fault tectonics determined by the overall geodynamics of the Mediterranean has played a major role and that Tertiary subsidence increases considerably toward the deep Ionian domain.

Les pentes extrêmement raides qui caractérisent les escarpements ioniens de la Méditerranée orientale sont le lieu d'une sédimentation condensée bien particulière observée en soucoupe plongeante. D'une part, on observe des encroûtements affectant la vase molle quaternaire (ou plus ancienne) dont la formation remonterait au Quaternaire récent (- 20 000 ans), le processus de diagenèse n'étant plus actif aujourd'hui. D'autre part, on observe des concentrations de matériel pélagique (ptéropodes, argonautes) parfois encroûté et couvert d'un enduit polymétallique, accumulé par des phénomènes de tri sur la pente. Enfin, on décrit brièvement des encroûtements fauniques sur des surfaces rocheuses de roches anciennes à l'affleurement constitués par la prolifération d'organismes avec des enduits polymétalliques ; serpuliens, spongiaires et coralliaires ahermatypiques traduisent un changement profond dans l'histoire hydrologique récente de la Méditerranée. Les caractères originaux de ces types de sédiments sont connus dans le passé. Leur observation in situ dans un environnement précis doit ainsi pouvoir servir à une interprétation plus rigoureuse de certaines des séries condensées de l'histoire géologique The extremely steep slopes characterizing the lonian escarpments in the eastern Mediterranean are the site of a curious type of condensed sedimentation observed from the submersible. Encrustations affecting the soft Quaternary (or older) oozes are observed, whose formation probably dates back to the recent Quaternary (- 20 000 years). The diagenesis process is no longer active. Likewise, concentrations of pelagic material (pteropods, argonaute) are observed and are sometimes encrusted and covered by a polymetallic coating. They are accumulated by sorting phenomena on the slope. A brief description is given of the faunal encrustations on the rocky surfaces of anciently outcropping rocks. These encrustations are composted of the proliferation of organisms with polymetallic coatings. They include serpulids, spongiae and ahermatypic corals revealing a profound change in the recent hydrological history of the Mediterranean. The original natures of such sediment types have been known in the past. Their observation in situ in a specific environment can thus be used for making a more accurate interpretation of various condensed series from geological history.

Le Comité d'Études Pétrolières Marines (CEPM) et le Centre National pour l'Exploration des Océans (CNEXO) ont mené une série d'études sous-marines des escarpements Ioniens pour en définir l'origine, l'âge et l'évolution. Les résultats présentés ici concernent le plateau Cyrénien, au sud du bassin Ionien profond. Ils comprennent : les données bathymétriques sous forme d'une carte à 1/100 000e hors texte, l'analyse morphologique des reliefs, les déterminations stratigraphiques effectuées sur les échantillons récoltés en dragages ou en plongées, la description sommaire des cinq plongées réalisées sur les escarpements. Les conclusions font ressortir : - l'existence de séries carbonatées de plate-forme d'âge Crétacé inférieur, affectées d'une subsidence rapide; - un changement paléogéographique majeur, post-Albien, qui correspondrait sans doute à la première individualisation du plateau sous-marin; - la distinction d'une série litée, probablement lithologiquement diversifiée, d'âge Crétacé supérieur; - la distinction d'une série supérieure massive, non datée, probablement entièrement carbonatée; - une évolution récente marquée par la formation de figures de dissolution sur les parois rocheuses, la diagenèse d'encroûtements carbonatés sur les pentes envasées. The Comité d'Études Pétrolières Marines (CEPM) and the Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Océans (CNEXO) have conducted a series of subsea surveys of the Ionian escarpments to determine their origin, age and evolution. The results presented here concern the Cyrenian Shelf, south of the deep Ionian basin. They include the bathymetric data in the form of a map at 1:100,000 (inset), the morphological analysis of the reliefs, the stratigraphic determinations carried out on samples taken by dredging and diving, and the brief description of the five dives carried out on the escarpments. The conclusions reveal the following:(a) the existence of Early Cretaceous platform carbonate series, affected by a rapid subsidence;(b) a major paleogeographic change, post-Albian, which probably corresponds to the first individualization of the submarine plateau;(c) the distinction of a bedded series, probably lithologically diversified, of Late Cretaceous age;(d) the distinction of a massive upper series, not dated, and probably entirely carbonate; (e) a recent evolution marked by the formation of dissolution forms on the rock walls and the diagenesis of carbonate crusts on the mud covered slopes.

De nombreux travaux réalisés par l'institut de Géologie Marine de Bologne d'une part et le Comité d'Etudes Pétrolières Marines (CEPM) d'autre part, permettent de préciser la stratigraphie et l'évolution morpho-structurale des fossés du détroit siculo-tunisien. La séismostratigraphie permet de préciser l'âge de fonctionnement des failles et de la subsidence qui ont joué de manière active dans cette région depuis le Miocène supérieur. Les levés bathymétriques détaillés réalisés avec le sondeur multifaisceaux Seabeam sur les escarpements sont publiés àl'échelle du 1/100 000e. L'analyse détaillée des échantillons recueillis par carottages ou dragages permet de préciser la stratigraphie et les environnements du Pliocène et du Quaternaire et de caractériser le Coniacien, Campanien, Maestrichtien, Eocène moyen et supérieur sous des faciès de mer ouverte. Extensive investigations carried out by both the Bologna Institute of Marine Geology and Comité d'Etudes Pétrolières marines (CEPM) give specific details about the stratigraphy and morpho-structural evolution of the troughs in the Strait of Messina-Tunisia. Seismostratigraphy shows the age at which faults were active and when subsidence was taking place actively in this region since the Upper Miocene. Detailed bathymetric surveys made with the multibeam Seabeam sounder on the escarpments have been published on a scale of 1:100 000th. A detailed analysis of samples taken by coring or dredging reveals the stratigraphy and environments in the Pliocene and Quaternary and enables the Coniacian, Campanian, Maestrichtion, and Middle and Upper Eocene to be characterized by open-sea facies.

A partir des données et des publications les plus récentes sur l'origine des bassins méditerranéens, la question est posée de savoir si les concepts de la tectonique des plaques peuvent être appliqués et aider la recherche pétrolière en Méditerranée. Malgré les difficultés qui sont rappelées, la réponse est affirmative car cette notion de tectonique globale a obligé les géologues à revoir un certain nombre de données classiques dans une optique nouvelle, en particulier sur le plan sédimentologique où des progrès indiscutables ont été effectués. De plus elle a conduit à distinguer d'une manière plus satisfaisante différents types de bassins dont l'âge et le mode de formation, la nature du remplissage sédimentaire, le degré géothermique et donc les possibilités pétrolières sont différents. On the basis of the most recent data and publications on the origin of Mediterranean basins, the question arises of knowing whether plate-tectonics concepts can be applied and can help with petroleum prospection in the Mediterranean. Despite the difficulties that are reviewed here, the answer is affirmative because this concept of global tectonics has forced geologists ta review various classic data fram a new vantage point, in particular with regard ta sedimentology in which indisputable advances have been made. Likewise, it leads ta making a more satisfactory distinction between different types of basins having different ages and formation processes, different types ofsedimentary fill, a different geothermal degreeand hence petroleum potentials.

Etudes bathymétriques précises par le sondeur multifaisceaux Seabeam, prélèvements de roches et de sédiments par dragages, plongées avec le submersible Cyana 3000, ont permis d'apporter des données nouvelles sur l'évolution mésozoïque et cénozoïque des marges du bassin Ionien profond. II s'agit toujours d'escarpements à pentes très raides où affleurent des séries sédimentaires anciennes. Les sédiments récents y sont très réduits et illustrent bien un modèle de sédimentation condensée. La tectonique et l'érosion récente sont évidents mais le façonnement des escarpements est antérieur au Miocène et peut varier d'une zone à l'autre. Le changement fondamental de sédimentation qui intervient entre le Lias inférieur et le Jurassique moyen le long de la falaise de Malte n'est pas prouvé ailleurs ; aux faciès pélagiques du Jurassique-Crétacé observés sur la bordure sud du bassin Ionien s'opposent les séries carbonatées de plate-forme fortement subsidente du Crétacé supérieur observées au Nord (Apulie). Detailed multibeam bathymetric surveys, dredging and diving with the Cyana 3000 submersible have provided new data on the Mesozoic and Cenozoic evolution of the margins of the deep lonian Basin. Old sedimentary series outcrop along very steep slopes, and recent sediments are very thin. Such scarps are thus a good model of starved margins where condensed sedimentation has occurred. Despite recent tectonic and erosional processes, the genesis of these scarps is at least pre-Miocene and varies from place to place. Drastic changes in sedimentation between the early Lias and the middle Jurassic are observed along the Malta escarpment. Pelagic facies, slopes and deep environments characterize the Jurassic and Cretaceous deposits, while highly subsiding platform carbonate deposition is still observed in the north (Apulia).

Cette étude stratigraphique, réalisée dans les bassins tertiaires du sud de la Turquie ouverts sur la Méditerranée, a permis de caractériser les différentes biozones du Tertiaire méditerranéen de l'Éocène inférieur au Pliocène. A l'ouest du bassin d'Anlalya la continuité des dépôts depuis le Crétacé terminal jusqu'au Langhien n'est pas interrompue par des lacunes importantes. Par contre à l'est (Antalya, Mut, Adana) la transgression néogène (Burdigalian à Langhien) est très nette sur les séries tectonisées, la série y est plus complète, comportant les niveaux évaporitiques du Miocène supérieur puis les marnes de Pliocène inférieur. Ces résultats sont complétés par une analyse micropoléontologique de quelques niveaux fossilifères du bassin de Mut où une espèce voisine de Globigerina ciperoensis Bolli (Oligocène) se trouve associée en très grand nombre à une microfaune d'àge burdigalien supérieur à la population observée ici est très similaire à celle de la, Paratéthys mais rend difficile l'utilisation stratigraphique de l'espèce Globigerina ciperoensis dans le domaine méditerranéen. This stratigraphic survey made in the Tertiary basins in southern Turkey (all opening out into the Mediterranean) served to characterize the différent Mediterranean Tertiary biozones from the early Eocene to the Pliocene. To the West of the Antalya Basin, the continuity of the deposits from the terminal Cretaceous to the Langhian is not interrupted by any large gaps. In the East, however (Antalya, Mut, Adana), the Neogene transgression (Burdigalian to Langhian) is very clearcut on the tectonized bosement where the series is more complete and contains evaporitic levels from the laie Miocene and then early Pliocene marls. These findings are completed by a micropaleontological analysis of some fossiliferous horizons in the Mut Basin where a species similarto Globigerina ciperoensis Bolli (Oligocene) is found in association with a great number of lote Burdigalian microfauna. The population here is quite similar to the one found in the Paratethys, but this makes it difficultto moke stratigraphic use of the species Globigerina ciperoensis in the Mediterranean realm.

Les études micropaléontologiques réalisées sur les échantillons prélevés soit par dragage, soit avec le bras articulé de la soucoupe plongeante Cyana apportent des résultats nouveaux sur la stratigraphie du Néogène en mer Ionienne et sur l'interprétation paléobathymétrique des associations faunistiques. Si le Miocène reste encore mal caractérisé, toutes les zones du Pliocène (MPL1 à MPL6) ont été reconnues. Les cotes des différents prélèvements et la faible puissance de chaque série qui leur permet d'affleurer en différents points des escarpements rendent probable un mécanisme de dépôt sur une pente préexistante. Les échantillons quaternaires très nombreux sont souvent caractérisés par la formation de croûtes ou par leur lithification complète. L'étude des vases holocènes a montré des associations relativement peu diversifiées. Ceci semble lié beaucoup plus à une stratification permanente des eaux entraînant une diminution de la teneur en oxygène et en éléments nutritifs qu'à d'autres facteurs comme la température ou la salinité. Micropaleontological analyses of samples taken either by dredging or by the articulated arm of the Cyana have provided new findings on the submersible Neogene stratigraphy of the lonian Sea and on the paleobathymetric interpretation of faunistic associations. Although the Miocene has not yet been fully characterized, all the Pliocene zones (MPL1 to MPL6) have been recognized. The depths of the different samples and the shallowness of each series outcropping at different points in the scarps make a deposit mechanism probable on a preexisting slope. The very numerous Quaternary samples are often characterized by crust formation or by complete lithification. An analysis of Holocene muds has shown relatively little diversified associations. This seems linked much more to a permanent stratification of the waters, causing a decrease in the oxygen content and in the nutritive elements, than to other factors such as temperature or salinity.
