Abstract

Melamine foam, categorized as an open-cell foam structure, absorbs sound through its three-dimensional network of thin struts. The pore size polydispersity within the open-cell melamine microstructure is evidenced from a top-down approach and confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM)-image analysis. The remarkable ability of melamine foams to mitigate sound energy is attributed to the pore size distribution, which encompasses co-existing pores of distinct characteristic sizes. Consequently, low-frequency and high-frequency fluid flows will follow different paths within the pore structure. A poly-sized model, which provides a connection between microstructure polydispersity and macroscopic properties, is successfully applied to three different melamine foams. This work highlights the significance and implications of polydispersity effects on the acoustic behavior of open-cell foams.

Abstract

A nonconventional application of worm gears exploits the irreversibility of these power transmission devices in order to realize fast emergency braking. This application can be used to secure lifting devices. A limiting factor in the design of these instantaneous braking systems is the residual deformations of the worm/wheel contacting teeth, due to the impact between them at each emergency stop. The prediction of these residual displacements requires solving of an elastic–plastic, multi-scale and multi-contact problem. Original numerical tools were developed in this study to solve the problem at global and local scales. The method has been validated by comparing the obtained results with 3D measurements on new and deformed worm/wheel pairs. In order to predict the issue of the worm gear after an impact, a criterion based on kinematic errors is proposed. Applying this criterion gives the maximal admissible torque for the braking system to be operational after the impact.

Abstract

YETI is a library offering an implementation of IsoGeometric Analysis based on NURBS and B-Splines. It is published under the GNU Lesser General Public Licence and comes in the form of a Python library allowing the user to enter the input data of a NURBS arametrization (as a text file inspired from Abaqus input files syntax). Stiffness and mass matrices and right hand side vector are computed to form linear systems for solving mechanical or thermal problems. Solid or Kirchhoff-Love shell elements are available.In the context of shape optimization, a NURBS parametrization can be set up with design variables based on control points position. YETI can compute the analytical sensitivities [1] of several quantities of interest (discrete compliance, volume, eigenvalues, displacement at given location, ...) that can be used in a gradient-based algorithm.For complex geometries involving multiple patches with non-conforming interfaces, a weak coupling strategy for the kinematic degrees of freedom, using a Mortar approach, is proposed. This latter is particularly suitable for a domain decomposition resolution, using a FETI (Finite Element Tiering and Interconnecting) algorithm [2]. To complete this coupling strategy in the field of shape optimization, an embedded approach [3] is set up to guarantee the geometric connection between a main patch to be optimized and adjacent patches representing geometric features as stiffeners or fillets. These patchesare nested in a free form deformation hull controlled by the main patch shape change.Efficient solving of Partial Derivative Equations can be an issue for high degree B-Splineparametrization. An implementation of Matrix Free Weighted Quadrature [4] is proposed in YETI for transient thermal problems and is being extended to mechanical problems with non linear material behavior.

Abstract

Quantitative structure-property relationships are crucial for the understanding and prediction of the acoustical properties of complex foams. For fluid flow in polydisperse foams, characterizing the pore size distribution and membrane content facilitates prediction of permeability, a key property that has been extensively studied in material science, geophysics and chemical engineering. In this work, we propose a formula to predict the permeability of polydisperse foams including membranes via microstructural descriptors which can be derived from X-ray microtomography and scanning electron micrographs.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of clinician perception of inappropriate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) regarding the last out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) encountered in an adult 80 years or older and its relationship to patient outcome. DESIGN: Subanalysis of an international multicenter cross‐sectional survey (REAPPROPRIATE). SETTING: Out‐of‐hospital CPR attempts registered in Europe, Israel, Japan, and the United States in adults 80 years or older. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 611 clinicians of whom 176 (28.8%) were doctors, 123 (20.1%) were nurses, and 312 (51.1%) were emergency medical technicians/paramedics. RESULTS AND MEASUREMENTS: The last CPR attempt among patients 80 years or older was perceived as appropriate by 320 (52.4%) of the clinicians; 178 (29.1%) were uncertain about the appropriateness, and 113 (18.5%) perceived the CPR attempt as inappropriate. The survival to hospital discharge for the “appropriate” subgroup was 8 of 265 (3.0%), 1 of 164 (.6%) in the “uncertain” subgroup, and 2 of 107 (1.9%) in the “inappropriate” subgroup (P = .23); 503 of 564 (89.2%) CPR attempts involved non‐shockable rhythms. CPR attempts in nursing homes accounted for 124 of 590 (21.0%) of the patients and were perceived as appropriate by 44 (35.5%) of the clinicians; 45 (36.3%) were uncertain about the appropriateness; and 35 (28.2%) perceived the CPR attempt as inappropriate. The survival to hospital discharge for the nursing home patients was 0 of 107 (0%); 104 of 111 (93.7%) CPR attempts involved non‐shockable rhythms. Overall, 36 of 543 (6.6%) CPR attempts were undertaken despite a known written do not attempt resuscitation decision; 14 of 36 (38.9%) clinicians considered this appropriate, 9 of 36 (25.0%) were uncertain about its appropriateness, and 13 of 36 (36.1%) considered this inappropriate. CONCLUSION: Our findings show that despite generally poor outcomes for older patients undergoing CPR, many emergency clinicians do not consider these attempts at resuscitation to be inappropriate. Abstract

National audience; On s’intéresse ici à l’optimisation de forme isogéométrique de coques. Le processus de résolution s’appuie sur une approche multi-modèles, rendue possible par les procédures de raffinement des fonctions NURBS qui conservent la géométrie. Des éléments massifs coques sont mis en place pour la simulation des structures élancées. L’extension de l’optimisation de forme des coques à ces éléments a pu être appliquée avec succès au cas simple d’un tube sous pression interne et semble constituer un outil pertinent pour l’optimisation de forme d’aérostructures.
