Abstract

This study reports on the plasmon-mediated remote Raman sensing promoted by specially designed coaxial nanowires. This unusual geometry for Raman study is based on the separation, by several micrometres, of the excitation laser spot, on one tip of the nanowire, and the Raman detection at the other tip. The very weak efficiency of Raman emission makes it challenging in a remote configuration. For the proof-of-concept, we designed coaxial nanowires consisting in a gold core to propagate the surface plasmon polaritons and a Raman-emitting shell of poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene). The success of the fabrication was demonstrated by correlating, for the same single nanowire, a morphological analysis by electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy analysis. Importantly for probing remote-Raman effect, the original hard template-based process allows to control the location of the polymer shell all along the nanowire, or only close to one or the two nanowire tips. Such all-in-one single nanowires could have applications in the remote detection of photo-degradable substances and for exploring 1D nanosources for integrated photonic and plasmonic systems., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, Supplementary Information available

Abstract

Raman microscopy is a valuable tool for detecting physical and chemical properties of a sample material. When probing nanomaterials or nanocomposites the spatial resolution of Raman microscopy is not always adequate as it is limited by the optical diffraction limit. Numerical post-processing with super-resolution algorithms provides a means to enhance resolution and can be straightforwardly applied. The aim of this work is to present interior-point least squares (IPLS) as a powerful tool for super-resolution in Raman imaging through constrained optimisation. IPLS's potential for super-resolution is illustrated on numerically generated test images. Its resolving power is demonstrated on Raman spectroscopic data of a polymer nanowire sample. Comparison to AFM data of the same sample substantiates that the presented method is a promising technique for analysing nanomaterial samples., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

High aspect-ratio gold nanostructures sustain Fabry–Perot-like surface plasmon responses from infrared to visible light energies. We show that some resonances can be tuned by means of laser irradiation, where low energy modes stay unperturbed. After laser irradiation, gold nanowires’ tips are transformed into nanoparticles of various sizes joint to gold nanowires, producing high aspect-ratio half-dumbbells and dumbbells structures. The plasmonic behaviour of both the nanowires and the newly created nanostructures has been characterised by in-depth monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) developed in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and state-of-the-art discrete dipole approximation (DDA) calculations. All these analyses serve as experimental proof of the selective tuning (or robustness) of the plasmonic modes of the nanostructures in a specific spectral range, which is of critical interest regarding applications for sensing devices, nano-sources or nanophotonic waveguide, as well as optical remote control.

4. Asymmetric multi-segmented conjugated polymer-metal nanowires for engineering of non-linear electrical behavior

Abstract

In this paper, we report on the impact of metal/polymer interfaces on the rectifying behavior of novel multi-segmented hybrid nanowires (HNWs) made of metallic and conjugated polymer (CP) segments. Using HNWs integrated in micromachined devices, the relationship between electronic properties and original structure is revealed. By combining transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and current-voltage (I-V) spectroscopy studies performed on several symmetric and asymmetric HNWs structures, we show that rectifying I-V characteristics are observed only for asymmetric HNWs. Moreover, it is shown that the rectification ratio can be improved up to 3 orders of magnitude by a proper selection of the HNW composition. While the rectifying behavior is observed in HNWs after oxidative or acid doping, the charge transport mechanism in as-synthesized HNWs is bulk-limited and independent from their structure. Both symmetric and asymmetric HNWs exhibit Ohmic and non-linear I-V curves above and below T~120 K, respectively. These electrical behaviors are consistent with a smooth transition from an Ohmic to a non-Ohmic variable-range-hopping (VRH) mechanism. We discuss the origin of these nonlinearities comparing the two- and four-probe measurements on single HNWs and we propose a simple model based on dual back-to-back Schottky diodes to explain qualitatively the rectifying properties., Comment: Submitted for publication

12. EELS studies of the tuning and robustness of plasmonic response in high aspect ratio gold nanostructures

Abstract

For the past couple of decades, plasmonics has been on the spotlight of research, mainly for its varied applications. Within this field, the study and tuning of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in metallic nanowires has been of importance due to their application versatility; ranging from photonics to electronics, sensors, or even chemical analysis through surface-enhanced light spectroscopies. Additionally, recent works have shown it is possible modify the morphology of these nanowires by means of laser irradiation, hence providing a new realm of high aspect-ratio nanostructures with potential new properties. Low-loss electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is a very fitting technique regarding the study of plasmonic resonances in these novel nanostructures, combining a nanometric spatial resolution and a very accurate spectral resolution. In this way, the monochromated EELS studies shown in this work, combined with state-of-the-art discrete dipole approximation (DDA) modelling, show how the plasmonic response of high aspect ratio gold 1D nanostructures can be tuned by means of coupled and non-coupled nanoparticles attached to the tips of gold nanowires, as well as a proof of concept as to how this technique can be used to understand coupling in these nanostructures. Specifically, these studies have been carried out on gold nanowires and nanostructures consisting of nanoparticles of various sizes joint to them, producing high aspect-ratio half-dumbbells and dumbbells. The investigation of the surface plasmon resonances has been developed through a non-negative matrix (NMF) decomposition of EELS spectrum images. Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we focus on current–voltage (I–V) characteristics in several kinds of quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) nanofibers to investigate their electronic transport properties covering a wide temperature range from 300 down to 2 K. Since the complex structures composed of ordered conductive regions in series with disordered barriers in conducting polymer nanotubes/wires and CdS nanowires, all measured nonlinearI–Vcharacteristics show temperature and field-dependent features and are well fitted to the extended fluctuation-induced tunneling and thermal excitation model (Kaiser expression). However, we find that there are surprisingly similar deviations emerged between theI–Vdata and fitting curves at the low bias voltages and low temperatures, which can be possibly ascribed to the electron–electron interaction in such quasi-1D systems with inhomogeneous nanostructures.

Abstract

National audience; Les nanostructures unidimensionnelles sont des systèmes prometteurs pour intégration dans des dispositifs intégrés en nano-optoélectronique et nanophotonique. Exploitant des procédés de mise en forme par méthode template, il est possible de concevoir des nano-architectures complexes en combinant différents matériaux afin de contrôler les interactions lumière-matière à une échelle sub-, obtenir des effets de cavité, voire une émission laser (pour une revue, voir [1]). Nous présentons ici différentes nanostructures à base de polymères conjugués ou non, d’or, ou encore de composites de luminophores nanométriques. Ces systèmes ont permis l’étude de la propagation photonique ou plasmonique au sein de nanofils et nanotubes passifs ou actifs, l’ingénierie excitonique de nano-sources. L’étude du couplage plasmon-exciton est envisagée.Dans un premier système, une stratégie originale a été développée pour obtenir des nanofils dont la couleur de photoluminescence est contrôlée par l’ingénierie spectrale et spatiale (géométrie coaxiale). Celle-ci permet d’éviter le transfert de charge et d'énergie entre les deux types de luminophores.Dans un second système, les caractéristiques de propagation de la lumière le long de nanotubes individuels de résine SU-8, largement utilisée en photonique intégrée, ont été modélisées (FDTD) et déterminées expérimentalement (nanotubes de diamètre  240 nm et d’épaisseur de paroi  60 nm). L’inclusion de clusters de composés de métaux de transition phosphorescents ou de fluorophores organiques dans les parois des nanotubes ou dans le canal au cœur du nanotube a permis de combiner émission et guidage de manière optimale.Enfin, des développements récents seront présentés, avec pour objectif de réaliser des dispositifs à détection SERS déportée ou à émission déportée. Pour cela, des nanofils coaxiaux ont été fabriqués avec un cœur en or qui assure la propagation plasmonique puis l’amplification du signal émis (Raman, fluorescence) par la gaine de polymère pi-conjugué, loin du signal d’excitation.

Abstract

International audience; Nano-architectures give opportunities to control and to tune the optoelectronic properties that could result in new paradigms for devices. Moreover, the 1D geometry promotes sub-wavelength optical propagation and cavity effects suitable for integrated nanophotonic devices.[1] First, we propose a novel strategy to get bright nano-emitters whose spectral emission can be precisely and simply anticipated. It consists in minimizing the role of charge and energy transfer mechanisms between the two species. The first key point is the selection of luminophores to prevent overlapping of their absorption and emission spectral range. The second key point is the spatial separation of the two types of luminophores in a coaxial geometry to prevent charge and energy transfer. [2] Coaxial nanowires with red emitters in the core and green fluorophores in the shell were successfully synthesized by a two-step template strategy. A simple and fine tuning of the photoluminescence features with both species in similar concentration has been shown. These advantages could make our strategy a new paradigm for nano-emitters. Second, experimental and FDTD modelling of light propagation along polymeric nanotubes has been investigated. The case of nanotubes is of particular interest because of higher interactions between the propagating light and both the surrounding medium and the inner channel. The light was directly injected within nanotubes of SU-8 photoresist. Using a cut-back like method, the attenuation coefficient has been estimated at about 10 dB/cm. [3] Thus, it shows that polymeric nanowires and nanotubes are very competitive structures as sub-wavelength waveguides. Recent developments focused on combining fluorescent conjugated molecules within passive polymeric nanotubes will also be reported.[1] A. Garreau, J.L. The report of the magnetic susceptibility dimensions on conducting polyaniline and polypyrrole nanostructures with various dopant types and doping levels as functions of temperature and magnetic field is presented. It was observed that the material preparation like dopant type and doping levels and measuring conditions like applied direct current (dc) magnetic field have great impact on the magnetic susceptibilities.

Abstract

We report the current-voltage (I{V ) characteristics of individual polypyrrole nanotubes and poly(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanowires in a temperature range from 300 K to 2 K. Considering the complex structures of such quasi-one-dimensional systems with an array of ordered conductive regions separated by disordered barriers, we use the extended ∞uctuation-induced tunneling (FIT) and thermal excitation model (Kaiser expression) to flt the temperature and electric-fleld dependent I{V curves. It is found that the I{V data measured at higher temperatures or higher voltages can be well fltted by the Kaiser expression. However, the low-temperature data around the zero bias clearly deviate from those obtained from this model. The deviation (or zero-bias conductance suppression) could be possibly ascribed to the occurrence of the Coulomb-gap in the density of states near the Femi level and/or the enhancement of electron-electron interaction resulting from nanosize efiects, which have been revealed in the previous studies on low-temperature electronic transport in conducting polymer fllms, pellets and nanostructures. In addition, similar I{V characteristics and deviation are also observed in an isolated K0:27MnO2 nanowire.

Abstract

We report the current–voltage (I–V) characteristics and electrical conductivity of individual template-synthesized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanowires (190 ± 6 nm in diameter and ort = 11.2 ± 2 Ω−1cm-1) over a wide temperature range from 300 to 10K. With lowering temperature, the I – V characteristics become nonlinear around 50K, and a clear Coulomb gap-like structure appears in the differential conductance (dl/dV) spectra. The temperature dependence of the resistance below 70K follows inR ∞ T-1/2, which can be interpreted as Efros–Shklovskii hopping conduction in the presence of a Coulomb gap. In addition, the influences of measurement methods such as the applied bias voltage magnitude, the two-probe and four-probe techniques used in the resistance measurements are also reported and discussed.

International audience; Nanophotonics and biophotonics Track:6-4 Nanodevices and nanophotonics In the field of nanophotonics, the understanding of optical phenomena related to sub-wavelength guiding in 1D-nanostructures is a fundamental interest for devices down-scaling. We present theoretical and experimental investigation of light propagation in original passive and active organic nanotubes. For this, polymer nanotubes has been designed and developed by the template wetting method. To characterize their optical behavior and in particular the sub-wavelength propagation, numerical and experimental tools have been developed. Modelling phenomena propagating in these nanofibers was performed by the numerical FDTD method. The effects of the geometry of these nanotubes and nanowires have been investigated. In particular, the effect of the diameter (outer and inner diameter for nanotubes) on the propagation behavior (energy distribution, losses), as well as the effect of the substrate, have been determined. Experimentally, two types of nanofibers were studied. First, direct injection into passive nanofibers of SU8 polymer was performed through a microlensed optical fiber. A striking result is the assessment of optical losses measured by the cutback around 1.25 dB/mm for nanotubes of external and internal diameters respectively 240 nm and 120 nm. This appears very competitive compared to other systems currently envisaged for integratednanophotonics. Second, active polymer nanofibers (polyfluorene PFO) embedded in a waveguiding polymer were elaborated and appeared to be an efficient design for a nano-source.

Abstract

International audience; One-dimensional polymer-based nano-structures such as nanowires (NWs) and nanotubes (NTs) are nowadays intensively investigated since they promote enhanced properties, as well as new paradigms for electronic, optical, optoelectronic, and photonic devices. Here, we propose a review of recent developments achieved in our group with collaborations on polymer based nanowires and nanotubes. Various polymer based NWs and NTs were synthesized by template strategies with advanced architectures designed for improving their functionality (waveguiding, color control of photoluminescence, photoconductivity and mechanical reinforcement,…). Both conjugated polymers (CPs) and photoresists containing photo-active species (transition metal compound clusters, single-walled-carbon nanotubes SWCNTs) were involved. The focus is made on the emerging strategies for understanding and controlling the behavior of charges, excitons and photons, as well as light propagation in sub-wavelength nanostructures.

Abstract

International audience; We report on optical components for integrated optics applications at the micro-and nanoscale. Versatile shapes and dimensions are achievable due to the liquid phase processability of SU8 resist. On the one hand, by adjusting the UV-lithography process, waveguiding structures are patterned and released from their original substrate. They can be replaced on any other substrate and also immerged in liquid wherein they still show off efficient light confinement. On the other hand, filled and hollow 1D-nanostructures are achievable by the wetting template method. By exploiting the large range of available SU8 viscosities, nanowires of diameter ranging between 50 nm and 240 nm, as well as nanotubes of controllable wall thickness are presented. Optical injection, propagation, and coupling in such nanostructures are relevant for highly integrated devices.
