Abstract

A study on the unimolecular reactions or fragmentation mechanisms of several R1CH2CH2R2.+ (R1 or R2 = OH, OCH3, OC2H5, NH2) radical cations was conducted to re-investigate the unimolecular reaction of a metastable 1,2-dimethoxyethane radical cation. Results of the experiment will furnish information about metastable processes and fragmentation thresholds with limited effects of kinetic shifts. Experimental methods, findings and conclusions are discussed.

Abstract

Fluorescence excitation spectra of OH(A), OH(B), OH(C), Lyman α, Balmer α, Balmer β, and H2O+(A) are recorded in H2O in the 9–35 eV photon excitation range. The OH(A) fluorescence quantum yield is measured from 9.2 to 13.6 eV incident photon energy. The pressure dependence of the H2O+(A) fluorescence excitation spectrum is investigated and the quenching rate constant of H2O+(A) by H2O is found to be equal to (4±2)×10-10 cm3 s-1. New Rydberg states are observed: a continuum-like state in the 10–12.6 eV range assigned to the (3a1)-1 (3pb2) 1B2 state and two broad bands lying at 27–29 and 30–32 eV, respectively, assigned to Rydberg states converging towards the (2a1)-1 innervalence state of H2O+. The valence character of the nsa1 Rydberg states is discussed. The decay processes of valence-type vs pure Rydberg states are investigated. All energetically accessible dissociation channels producing fluorescent fragments are observed and the fragments appear at their thermodynamical threshold. The competition between autoionization and dissociation into neutrals is shown to occur only for pure Rydberg states. Possible dissociation mechanisms are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The threshold photoelectron–photoion coincidence method was used to study O+2 dissociation. Previous results were confirmed and a careful analysis of the time of flight peak shapes using a Monte Carlo simulation gave us new results. The lifetime of the B 2Σ-g state was measured to be 70∓25 ns independently of the vibrational quantum number. The III 2∏u state which dissociates towards the O+(2D0)+O(3P) and O+(2P0)+O(3P) limits shows anisotropic distribution of fragment ions. The c 4Σ-u(v=0) state which was previously observed to dissociate into O+(4S0)+O(1D), its adiabatic limit, is seen to predissociate also about 40% towards the ground state limit. Abstract

The predissociation of the A 2Σ+ state of N2O+ has been reinvestigated with a threshold photoelectron–photoion coincidence experiment using synchrotron radiation as the excitation source and a newly designed spectrometer. The NO+ fragment vibrational distribution resulting from the predissociation of (1,0,0), (0,0,1), (2,0,0), (1,0,1), and (3,0,0) levels varies with vibrational excitation of the parent ion and in all cases is inverted and narrow. Both NO+(X 1Σ+)+N(4S0) and NO+(X 1Σ+)+N(2D0) limits are observed. Predissociation of the A state to the 2 4Σ- dissociative continuum is shown to proceed via an indirect mechanism involving the 1 4Π bound state. Close coupled quantum calculations were carried out with a simplified model for indirect predissociation in which the bending motion is neglected. They show the occurrence of vibrational population inversions in the fragment distributions, as observed experimentally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Charge transfer cross sections for state-selected N+2 (X,A;v) and Ar+(2PJ) ions colliding with H2 have been measured at laboratory energies of 10.5 and 14.5 eV by means of the TPEPICO (threshold-photoelectron/photoion coincidence) method using synchrotron radiation. The cross sections are put on an absolute basis by normalizing to earlier measurements for N+2+H2. For the purpose of comparison total cross sections have also been measured for state-selected H+2(v)+N2 at 10 eV lab. A simple model, which assumes that small impact parameter collisions lead to chemical reaction, gives a qualitative explanation of the N+2+H2 and Ar++H2 data. The work sheds light on previous problems with the application of the principle of microscopic reversibility to these systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

TandEM was proposed as an L-class (large) mission in response to ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 Call, and accepted for further studies, with the goal of exploring Titan and Enceladus. The mission concept is to perform in situ investigations of two worlds tied together by location and properties, whose remarkable natures have been partly revealed by the ongoing Cassini-Huygens mission. These bodies still hold mysteries requiring a complete exploration using a variety of vehicles and instruments. TandEM is an ambitious mission because its targets are two of the most exciting and challenging bodies in the Solar System. It is designed to build on but exceed the scientific and technological accomplishments of the Cassini-Huygens mission, exploring Titan and Enceladus in ways that are not currently possible (full close-up and in situ coverage over long periods of time). In the current mission architecture, TandEM proposes to deliver two medium-sized spacecraft to the Saturnian system. One spacecraft would be an orbiter with a large host of instruments which would perform several Enceladus flybys and deliver penetrators to its surface before going into a dedicated orbit around Titan alone, while the other spacecraft would carry the Titan in situ investigation components, i.e. a hot-air balloon (Montgolfière) and possibly several landing probes to be delivered through the atmosphere. © Springer Science + Business Media B.V. 2008.

Abstract

The SU5 VUV beamline aims towards a dual scientific program: high resolution spectroscopy on dilute targets and linear/circular dichroism on anisotropic systems. A crossed planar/helicoidal electromagnetic undulator has been designed and built, providing both flux and variable polarizations. We have shown a complete versatility of the polarization state of the emitted light with high polarization rates. Besides, the harmonics of the undulator can be suppressed owing to a gas filter, acting as a low-energy pass filter, with rejection factors above 105. The beamline is centered around a 6.65 m off-plane Eagle normal incidence monochromator which has shown unprecedented raw resolving powers (117 000 at 21.6 eV, 133 000 at 15.8 eV) with typical flux in a 1/50 000 bandwidth of 1010–109 photons/s between 6 and 30 eV.

31. PAHs molecules and heating of the interstellar gas

Abstract

Until now it has remained difficult to account for the rather high temperatures seen in many diffuse interstellar clouds. Various heating mechanisms have been considered: photoionization of minor species, ionization of H by cosmic rays, and photoelectric effect on small grains. Yet all these processes are either too weak or efficient under too restricting conditions to balance the observed cooling rates. A major heat source is thus still missing in the thermal balance of the diffuse gas. Using photoionization cross sections measured in the lab, it was shown that in order to balance the observed cooling rates in cold diffuse clouds (T approx. 80 K) the PAHs would have to contain 15 percent of the cosmic abundance of carbon. This value does not contradict the former estimation of 6 percent deduced from the IR emission bands since this latter is to be taken as a lower limit. Further, it was estimated that the contribution to the heating rate due to PAH's in a warm HI cloud, assuming the same PAH abundance as for a cold HI cloud, would represent a significant fraction of the value required to keep the medium in thermal balance. Thus, photoionization of PAHs might well be a major heat source for the cold and warm HI media.

Abstract

The formation of C2H3+ and its H/D isotopic variants in the reaction of C2H2+ with CH4 and CD4 was investigated in crossed-beam scattering experiments over the collision energy range 0.8 to 2.0 eV (centre of mass). Analysis of the scattering data shows that the product is formed simultaneously via decomposition of intermediates of two different average lifetimes; the mechanism of the process can be identified with two different pathways on the potential energy hypersurface. Formation of the long-lived intermediate (mean lifetime longer than 4 ps in the entire collision energy region) is interpreted as a reaction path involving intermediates of strongly bound C3H6+ isomers, and formation of the short-lived intermediate (mean lifetime decreases from about 2 ps to 0.3 ps with collision energy increasing from 0.8 to 2.0 eV) as a reaction path going through H-bonded intermediates (C2H2···H···CH3)+. At the collision energy of 2 eV the rate of decomposition of the short-lived intermediate is shown to be in effective competition with the rate of H/D isotope scrambling.

Abstract

Reactions of [ethylene]+· with ethylene and of [acetylene]+· with ethane were studied by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance spectrometry using labeled reactants. The results confirm and clarify the different steps of the mechanism proposed previously and elaborated with other methods. The [[acetylene]+·, ethane] system can either dissociate to give the ethyl cation product, or isomerize into [[ethylene]+·, ethylene]. The latter system can either dissociate to yield ionized ethylene or convert into ionized but-2-ene, which undergoes a complete H-exchange prior to dissociation, leading to methyl radical, hydrogen radical and ethylene losses. The transfers of labeled atoms and the existence of H-exchange prior to formation of the products were used as a probe to check the different steps of the mechanism.
