Purpose: The present study aimed to examine the effect of received remittance inflows on the price level ratio of the purchasing power parity conversion factor to the market exchange rate in 36 developed and developing countries from 2004 to 2020. Design/methodology/approach: The panel data conducted a comparative analysis and used panel least squares, regression with Driscoll-Kraay standard errors of fixed effect, random effect, feasible generalised least squares and maximum likelihood robust least squares to overcome the heterogeneity issue. Furthermore, the two-step difference generalised method of moments to overcome the endogeneity issue. Diagnostic tests were used to increase robustness. Findings: In the studied countries, there was a statistically significant negative relationship between received remittance inflows and the price-level ratio of the purchasing power parity conversion factor to the market exchange rate. This relationship explains why remittance flows depreciate the real exchange rate. The study's results also indicated that attracting investments can improve the quality of institutions despite high tax rates, leading to low tax revenue. Originality/value: The current study findings enrich the understanding of policies of how governments should minimise tariff rates on capital imports and introduce export-oriented incentive programmes. This study examines the effect of resource endowment and corruption on countries' inbound foreign tourism. Specifically, we examine whether growing resource endowment crowds out tourism industry and role of corruption in this process. For this purpose, we utilize panel data of 140 countries from 1995 through 2018. We utilize estimation technique in analysis that takes care of possible endogeneity in the models. Our results show that resource endowment and corruption lead to a reduction in tourism demand. However, the prevailing high level of corruption with resource richness may provide life-blood to the tourism sector. On the basis of these results, we argue that the 'Dutch disease' hypothesis for tourism is valid for the tourism sector across the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although tourism has produced long-term growth and progress, the economic consequences of this economic specialisation, which is summarised by the paradoxical effect known as the Dutch Disease, alongside the worst financial performance in tourism-led economies as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, indicate the need for diversification in such economies. Previous research has overwhelmingly shown that tourism development results in decreases in traditional exports, overdevelopment of services and marginalises the weight of industry in the economy. Using a theoretical dynamic general equilibrium model, this article demonstrates that the Dutch Disease can be avoided in tourism-led economies, precisely owing to tourism specialisation, and non-tourism development is possible. Economists have hypothesized that currency appreciation resulting from oil production in oil-rich countries can suppress the production of tradable goods, a phenomenon known as Dutch disease, often assessed using econometric models. This study leverages sanctions on Iranian oil exports, employing a quasi-experimental design with two distinct periods (1959–2020): one marked by sanctions (oil revenue recession) and the other by non-sanctions (oil revenue boom). The result shows a reversal of the Dutch disease effect during sanctions, leading to a real depreciation of the national currency and heightened production of tradable goods over non-tradable ones. The observed pattern of the real exchange rate aligns with Dutch disease dynamics, depreciating during sanctions and appreciating during non-sanction periods. Furthermore, the tradable sector exhibited increased share and real output growth compared to the non-tradable sector during the sanction period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

General topic in this paper is the role of oil industry in global economy and the result of changing oil prices on economic variables in Azerbaijan. The major aim is to analyze the effects of crude oil price changes on Azerbaijan economy in order to measure how changes in oil prices affect its basic economic variables. At the beginning, a general outlook on oil industry will be given and the main oil exporting economies will be analized. However, main focus will be on the structure of Azerbaijan’s economy and it will examine the example of Azerbaijan as a transition economy where oil and gas production and exports have steadily increased from the mid ‘90s. Many critical oil and gas extraction projects have been implemented; while the oil and gas sector's dominance in the economy poses a number of threats to the balanced development of the country's economy. It will show how the economy of Azerbaijan was affected after the oil crisis, such as other developing countries that mainly depending on oil and petroleum products. For this purpose, VEC Model has been applied, consdering Azerbaijan Statistic Data and analized the effects of oil price fluctuations on its economic variables parallel with the oil industry. The main findings indicate that Azerbaijan's economy is strongly dependent on resource exports, which produce high growth rates when commodity prices are favorable, but end up with lower macroeconomic performance when global oil prices fall. It is clear that the main income of Azerbaijan comes from oil and oil products, so the export of oil will have a high impact on the saving level of the population. At the time of high revenues come from export and the low exchange rate of the foreign currency in Azerbaijan has also led to the low cost of imported goods. As well demonstrated in the research, Azerbaijan economy has been widely exposed to major crude oil price distortions. It can be said that in order to avoid increasing overdependence on oil earnings, diversifying the economy should be a top priority.

AbstractThe Dutch Disease, initially associated with natural resource discovery, has evolved to include various capital inflows. This study investigates the relationship between remittance inflows and the Dutch Disease in Ethiopia, focusing on the real effective exchange rate. Using a 30-year time series (1991–2020) and a Vector Error Correction Model, the study finds a robust long-run relationship among remittances, official development assistance, money supply, terms of trade, domestic credit, and real gross domestic product. The empirical results reveal that remittances, along with other variables, significantly affect the real effective exchange rate in both the short and long run. Contrary to the Dutch Disease hypothesis, remittance inflows did not lead to real effective exchange rate appreciation in the long run. Trade liberalization and government consumption of non-tradables were also identified as influential factors. The short-run dynamics indicate a significant speed of adjustment towards equilibrium, emphasizing the importance of understanding the macroeconomic impacts of remittances on real effective exchange rate. Policy implications include managing real effective exchange rate through targeted interventions, considering trade liberalization to enhance export competitiveness, and designing remittance policies to utilize capital for economic development without fearing Dutch Disease consequences. The study also recommends the disaggregation of foreign aid data for more nuanced policy insights. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights for policymakers in navigating the complexities of remittances, economic variables, and the real effective exchange rate in Ethiopia, facilitating informed and effective policy decisions.

For developing economies, exporting broadens the horizon for facilitating effective integration into the global economy and improving overall competitiveness. While small developing states are particularly at high risk given their fundamental characteristics, the expected impact of these exogenous shocks on small resource dependent economies are amplified given the high possibility of lower levels of diversification. This paper therefore assesses the determinants of exports and exporting potential of SIDS (small island developing states) with a focus on Caribbean resource-based countries. Using non resource exports, in an aggregate and disaggregate form, as the dependent variable, the traditional gravity model was augmented to include a revealed comparative advantage (RCA) index, the real effective exchange rate (REER) of the exporter and the export sophistication (EXPY) index. The main findings indicate that an appreciation of the REER has an inverse impact on exports of non-resource commodities and that trade according to comparative advantage and differences in export sophistication occurs mainly in the agricultural sector. The Dutch disease literature reveals several gaps between empirical evidence and theoretical predictions. To bridge such gaps, I develop a model that accounts for uneven spillovers of technological progress from the resource sector to other domestic sectors. I then employ a dynamic panel approach to align the theory with the data. I find that the real exchange rate appreciation resulting from a resource boom (i.e., the spending channel) is more pronounced in resource-poor countries than in resource-rich countries. Additionally, the resource movement channel exhibits differences between resource-rich and resource-poor countries. In resource-rich countries, a resource boom reduces the growth rate in the manufacturing sector more than in the service sector, leading to a decrease in relative sectoral output and a slowdown in economic growth. On the other hand, in resource-poor countries, a resource boom accelerates the growth of the manufacturing sector and decelerates the growth of the service sector, resulting in an increase in relative sectoral output and economic growth. The Dutch Disease is a well-documented phenomenon observed in countries that have experienced a boom in a non-renewable resource such as oil and gas and minerals. The evidence documented from the numerous studies done on Dutch Disease can therefore be used as a guide for policy makers to equip countries in lieu of a resource boom. This paper synthesizes the literature on Dutch Disease to outline the key economic effects documented in the literature. The main thematic areas of economic effects from the countries identified in the literature synthesis were then analyzed using trend analysis from a time series of economic variables for each country to represent the respective thematic areas. The trends were then discussed against the theoretical literature on Dutch Disease. The trend analysis was then extended to the country of Guyana which is on the verge of an oil boom, primarily to identify if the synthesis can provide any possible indications of potential Dutch Disease effects for the country. The synthesis predominantly showed the impacts of Dutch Disease to manufacturing which had a cyclical and downward trend in its contribution to Gross Domestic Product and impacts to the value of the agricultural sector. The synthesis also showed sporadic economic growth and varying effects on the exchange rate and wages in the country. The data for Guyana show a pre-disposition for Dutch Disease effects with the incoming oil boom and the potential existence of the Dutch Disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The three equilibriums are depicted in a new figure. A new form of neutralizing the Dutch disease using import tariffs and export subsidies on manufactured goods is discussed.

The Dutch disease phenomenon has been related to foreign inflows into emerging economies in particular, including foreign aid, migrant’s remittances, and foreign direct investment. A surge in these inflows is expected to yield a rise in the real exchange rate. Recipient countries have seen a decline in industry as a result of the rise in the non-marketable sector and the slump in the marketable sector. This study empirically investigates the mechanisms of real exchange rate adjustments to migrant remittances, ODA, and FDI toward emerging economies. For the analysis covering the years 2001–2020, dynamic panel data approaches, difference GMM and system GMM, are used to investigate the incidence of Dutch Disease in 84 emerging economies. Numerous econometric studies have shown that Dutch Disease does exist in emerging economies. Commodity booms generally induce real exchange rate appreciation in commodity-rich economies and make other tradable sectors less competitive. This "Dutch disease" phenomenon has been blamed for leading to structures of production with low diversification and undermining sustainable growth. In this paper, we explore whether capital controls can mitigate the transmission of commodity price changes to the real exchange rate and shield manufactured exports. Examining a panel of 37 commodity-abundant countries over the period 1980–2020, we find that a steeper commodity currency appreciation indeed has a more detrimental impact on manufactured exports. Restrictions on capital flows tend to reduce real appreciation pressures and the severity of the Dutch disease. The economy of a developing country like Nigeria has evolved from a strong dependence on agricultural exports in the 1960s to an unhealthy reliance on crude oil exports. This has led to a large agricultural trade deficit that requires a better understanding of the dynamic relationship between oil price booms and agricultural production. To this end, the study not only isolates the effect of oil price movements on agricultural production from heterogeneous sub‐sectors in Nigeria but also tests for Dutch disease symptoms using annual data from 1970 to 2019. Employing the auto‐regressive distributed lag (ARDL) cointegration and dynamic simulations as well as dynamic Granger causality techniques, the study shows that in the long run, oil price booms affect the food sector and the livestock sector heterogeneously. An increase in the oil price undercuts the production performance of the food sector. Also, because of the strong linkage between domestic livestock production and the global livestock market, an increase in domestic production has a weak predictive content for oil price booms. The policy implications of these findings include the sterilization of oil revenues outside the country and collaboration with foreign investors to provide much‐needed investment in the agricultural sector through various incentive schemes. The aim of this paper is to verify whether Peru has suffered from Dutch disease. To do this, a VARX model with monthly data from 2003 to 2020 is used to analyze whether the mining boom prices of the 2000s and 2010s have had a negative impact on the real sector, especially on non-primary manufacturing. Results show that a real exchange rate shock explains 8.2% of the variation in non-primary manufacturing. Even though the effect is significant, it is relatively small, and this is due to the Peruvian Central Bank intervening to reduce exchange rate volatility

Since 2014, academic studies have increasingly underscored the potential adverse consequences associated with Azerbaijan's imbalanced and dependent economic structure. It is widely recognized that countries relying heavily on the export of primary commodities are illprepared for situations characterized by sharp declines in international commodity prices. Hence, the objective of this paper is to examine the Azerbaijani economy amidst two parallel developments: the growth of oil-related macroeconomic indicators and the contraction of nonoil subsectoral industrial production. To achieve this, the analytical framework of the Dutch disease, a widely preferred theory to study commodity exporters, and canonical correlation analysis (CCA) were employed in the period 1995 to 2021. The findings reveal statistically significant canonical correlations between certain subsectors of the textile industry (such as ginned cotton, cotton fabric, silk fabric, bed linen of cotton, and cotton yarn) and the Dutch disease variables (e.g., oil rent, real effective exchange rate), while other subsectors (including carpets, crocheted legwear and garments, outerwear, underwear, and footwear) do not exhibit similar patterns. These results show that non-consumer subsectors of the textile subsectors, especially the cotton sector, are more vulnerable to the effects of Dutch disease than consumer subsectors of the textile subsectors. In addition, the oil rent variable is a persistent channel that shows a negative correlation with the latent variables of the textile subsectors. These results prompt policymakers and researchers to reassess the role of large extractive industries in a small, open economy like Azerbaijan and to formulate economic policies that safeguard and foster specific subsectors. Palm oil emerges as an important raw material needed in many fields from food to chemical industry and energy sector. Indonesia is the largest palm oil producer in the world and has great potential to market this domestically and internationally. With a huge production capacity, the inability to effectively use income obtained from export of this product may have an adverse effect on the economic growth rate. This issue is called the Dutch Disease in literature. In this study, it is proposed that the validity of the Dutch Disease needs to be investigated asymmetrically in Indonesia during the period of 2000:Q1-2021:Q4. Using “The Nonlinear Lag Distributed Autoregressive Model” (NARDL) suggested by Shin et al. (2014), it is found that the positive shocks to palm oil price have a positive impact on real effective exchange rate. The findings indicate that the Dutch Disease hypothesis is valid in Indonesia. In this context, the income increase in Indonesia, leading to the diversification of goods by transferring more resources especially to the high-tech manufacturing industry, and the strengthening of the institutional structure, thus ensuring better management of resources, and transferring more resources to education and science will provide a solution to the Dutch Disease experienced in this country.

ABSTRACT In economics, there is just one argument legitimising import tariffs - the infant industry argument -, but it ceases to be valid as the required learning time ends. This note offers a second argument: the neutralisation of the Dutch disease argument. If the country faces this competitive disadvantage, import tariffs and export subsidies may be a way of circumventing the problem. Many countries that industrialised were only successful because they pragmatically neutralised the disease with import tariffs.

ABSTRACT This paper measures with a novel methodology the amount of agrarian ground rent intersectoral transfers in Uruguay and its relative weight in the national amount of surplus value during the period 1955-2019. In order to this, the paper identifies the mechanisms through which ground rent is transferred from landowners to industrial and commercial capitals. The main results show that agrarian ground rent transfers, in particular through exchange rate overvaluation, was a recurring mechanism that has been central for capital accumulation. These transfers complement the surplus value appropriated by individual capitals, however, at the same time, consolidate the rentier nature of Uruguay due to the chronic overvaluation of exchange rate.

Oil prices, which are effective on many variables such as production, investment, foreign trade and employment structure of countries, also have effects on foreign direct investments and foreign trade due to their effects on the real exchange rate. The essence of this phenomenon, which can be formed through some parameters such as foreign direct investments, portfolio investments and foreign aid, which causes capital flows as well as oil prices, and which is defined as the Dutch Disease in the literature, is the increase in the amount of foreign currency entering the country as a result of the profit explosion that emerged with the discovery of natural resources. The "Dutch Disease", which was first recognized by the world's countries through The Economist magazine in 1977, is the contraction of production with the flow of production factors towards the new source in a country that suddenly became rich with the discovery of a natural resource. Thus, it is the coexistence of two subsectors that expand and contract at the same time in the economy. In this study, it is aimed to determine whether there is a connection between oil prices and real exchange rates in the Turkic Republics (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan) using panel data for the period 2000-2019. As a result of the analysis, there is no relationship between the increase in oil prices and the real exchange rate in these countries, so the finding of Dutch Disease could not be determined. In light of the natural gas discoveries in the Mediterranean Sea and their impact on the Israeli economy, I must assess the change in the exchange rate and its impact on the foreign exchange market. There are numerous positive social impacts resulting from the gas discoveries including optimising Israel's energy security and its move to cleaner energy. However, not all of the consequences of discovering natural resources may be positive. One possibly negative outcome could be the well‐known phenomenon called the "Dutch disease" in which the discovery of a natural resource can cause a country's currency to spike. To investigate whether the strengthening of the Israeli currency in recent years is a symptom of the "Dutch disease" I used daily and intraday event study methodology to explore the changes in the real exchange rate of the Israeli shekel and the US dollar between 2008 and 2017, according to announcements related to the gas discoveries published during this period. In addition, I examined whether an increase in the real exchange rate was a result of the publication of announcements about natural gas harming the manufacturing and industrial sectors. I found that announcements related to gas discoveries did affect the real exchange rate and caused an appreciation of the Israeli shekel. Investors could analyse the announcements and achieve an abnormal return in the foreign exchange market. Drawing on Dutch disease theory, we assess how the recent housing boom has contributed to a decline in China's manufacturing exports. Using Chinese city and enterprise panel data from 2004 to 2013, our analysis reveals that Dutch disease indeed exists and that the housing price increase has played a very important role in affecting China's manufacturing exports through two key channels: resource movement effect and spending effect. Specifically, this paper found that: (i) the housing price increase hindered labor flowing into China's manufacturing industry (resource movement effect) and caused higher inflation (spending effect); (ii) the housing boom clearly impeded China's manufacturing exports, especially after the outbreak of the global economic crisis in 2008; (iii) the impacts of the housing price increase on China's manufacturing exports were heterogenous, and were more significant for labor‐intensive manufacturing businesses, businesses that were foreign owned, less R&D intensive, or located in the central and western regions. Like many commodities, uranium price is notoriously volatile, and such volatility can have serious economic consequences for countries that export them. Niger, which is the fourth-largest producer of uranium in the world, has been dealing with uranium price fluctuations since the start of its production in 1972. Since 2011, Niger is also an oil-exporting country. However, Niger is still one of the poorest countries in the world, and policymakers are keen on learning the impact of natural resource revenue on the economy. Policymakers are particularly interested in knowing whether uranium export has been a curse instead of a blessing. As such, the present study seeks to analyze, empirically, the impact of uranium price fluctuations on key macroeconomic variables in Niger. More precisely, the objective of this article is to document the existence of Dutch “disease” or lack thereof in the economy. The study uses VAR and VECM methodologies and utilizes Granger causality tests, variance decomposition, and impulse response functions to guide the analysis. These approaches allow for an empirical deeper dive into the impact of the uranium sector on the economy. The article uses annual time series data covering the period from 1977 to 2015. The data comes from three main sources, including the World Development Indicators (WDI) database, the Central Bank of West African Countries dataset (EDEN), and Niger’s National Institute of Statistics (INS) dataset. The results show that Niger’s economy suffered from Dutch disease from uranium export. Indeed, the Granger causality tests show that uranium export revenue cannot be used to forecast real income in Niger. Furthermore, impulse response functions confirm the above result as a shock to uranium price and the resultant effects on money supply, inflation, and the real exchange rate is consistent with the Dutch “disease” theory. In general, uranium export revenue was the source of macroeconomic imbalances observed in the country during the period considered by the study. Now that Niger is also an exporter of oil in addition to uranium, policymakers should avoid the trap of Dutch “disease” by investing natural resources revenue strategically. The subject of the study is the foreign trade turnover between Russia and the G7 countries (USA, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain), in particular, its structure. The purpose of the work is to identify the degree of influence of Russia’s cooperation with the countries considered in the work in the field of trade in goods on the national economy of Russia. The theoretical and methodological basis and information base of the study are the works of Russian and foreign authors devoted to the issues of interaction between Russia and the G7 countries. While writing this article the authors also referred to official Russian sources, in particular, to the data provided by the Federal Customs Service of Russia, the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), and the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation. It is concluded that Russia’s cooperation with the G7 countries in the sphere of foreign trade is generally effective for Russia. However, it should be noted that the Russian Federation is actively implementing an export-oriented policy, the main products of which are oil products, which undoubtedly contributes to the increase in the rate of economic development, the inflow of foreign capital and the increase in gross domestic product. But due to the imposed sanctions, as well as dependence of the Russian Federation on oil and gas revenues, it is necessary to direct the vector of development to other industries, pay special attention to the development of domestic products and diversify the economy. The results obtained in this paper can be used for forecasting the economic position of the country in the global arena, analyzing the further interaction of the Russian Federation with its key trading partners, and assessing the feasibility of an effective partnership.

This study examines deindustrialisation in 15 post-Soviet economies by investigating the country-specific fixed effect in the relationships among manufacturing, population, and income and the factors contributing to deindustrialisation in terms of the premature deindustrialisation hypothesis. In economics, there is just one argument legitimising import tariffs - the infant industry argument -, but it ceases to be valid as the required learning time ends. This note offers a second argument: the neutralisation of the Dutch disease argument. If the country faces this competitive disadvantage, import tariffs and export subsidies may be a way of circumventing the problem. This paper measures with a novel methodology the amount of agrarian ground rent intersectoral transfers in Uruguay and its relative weight in the national amount of surplus value during the period 1955-2019. In order to this, the paper identifies the mechanisms through which ground rent is transferred from landowners to industrial and commercial capitals. The main results show that agrarian ground rent transfers, in particular through exchange rate overvaluation, was a recurring mechanism that has been central for capital accumulation. These transfers complement the surplus value appropriated by individual capitals, however, at the same time, consolidate the rentier nature of Uruguay due to the chronic overvaluation of exchange rate. In this paper, a new model is developed by referring to the literature on Dutch disease and rent-seeking for explaining how a natural resource boom in the energy sector decreases national income and induces a resource movement effect under a rent-seeking monopoly. In such a model, it is shown that the resource movement effect certainly occurs during the boom where labor inputs will move to the energy sector from the services sector. We investigate tourism-led Dutch Disease in the selected South Asian countries with data covering from 1980 to 2018 as no studies have been done from the South Asian perspective. We use recently developed robust panel econometric methods for this empirical analysis. Our results reveal that concerning variables have long-run cointegrating relationship given their stationarity property and crosssectional dependency. The ARDL (PMG) and the panel DOLS show that tourism and economy are positively associated in the long run (0.17 and 0.12). We further reveal that increase in tourism activities reduce manufacturing competitiveness in the long run (–0.19 and –0.11), which is a symptom of tourism-led Dutch Disease. Our results also confirm that the presence of Dutch Disease persists for a long time. Therefore, we suggest that policymakers can utilize a part of the tourism-generated revenue for the mutual development of both the sectors to alleviate Dutch Disease in South Asia. We investigate the impact of remittance inflows on the real exchange rate using a sample of 134 developing and emerging economies. Using heterogeneous panel cointegration approach, we find that remittances contribute to long-term real appreciation of the domestic currency, which is beyond the level implied by the Balassa-Samuelson effect. Consequently, we find evidence that remittances might contribute to triggering the phenomenon of the Dutch disease. We also find evidence for heterogeneity in the effects of remittances on the real exchange rate: having floating exchange rate, higher economic freedom and higher financial development reduces the long-run appreciation due to remittance inflows.
