Present income plays an important role in the expectation of a family regarding future income level. A study of 2,000 Dutch households reveal that half of the families studied expect no change with regards to their future income. Past incomes also affect family views regarding future income changes. Many of the families studied are pessimistic in their future income as shown by a belief that they are more likely to experience a decrease in their future income. Other factors affecting future income expectations of a family include economic status, labor market status of the family head and age.

It is generally recognized that the Dutch played a major part in financing British government deficits from the 1720s to the late 1770s. This article argues that even though the Dutch continued to hold large amounts of British debt after 1780, they stopped supplying new capital to the British and started a modest repatriation of some of their previous investments. A comparative econometric study of 3 percent consol yields during the two deficit-inducing wars Britain fought between 1750 and 1795 shows that as a result British interest rates became much more sensitive to increases in government borrowing.

An analysis of the relationship between height of conscripts and national income is presented. Earlier research findings conclude that the Dutchnational income was factored by the height of medical conscripts at the their first medical examination. Results show that the relation was a product of the statistical methods applied in measuring Dutch national income for the ninteenth century.

We study to what extent adjustments in labor market participation, defined as employment entry and exit, and as increases and reductions of weekly working hours, depend on resources of the partner. Moreover, we investigate whether the influence of the partner depends on historical period, human capital, and children. We are especially interested in the economic-based hypothesis that people are more likely to reduce working hours when their partners have more resources. We use retrospective information on labor market careers of 5,685 respondents and their (ex-)partners (Family Surveys of the Dutch Population 1998-2003). Our results provide little support for the economic hypothesis, and we suggest that family formation and cultural factors are more important predictors for male and female labor market participation adjustments in the Netherlands.
