Abstract

Atmospheric oxidation reactions can be studied in the field, in the lab and by modelling, with each methodic approach having advantages and issues. The main drawback for field experiments is that both chemical and non-chemical processes (emission, advection, vertical dilution, etc.) can simultaneously impact the chemical composition of ambient air, making it difficult to assess their respective contributions. For this purpose, a mobile atmospheric chamber (DouAir) has been developed to trap ambient air at a measurement site and to investigate the chemistry taking place in this isolated air mass. Since the environment within the chamber is controllable, oxidation processes can be measured and modelled with relative ease, so that the underlying chemistry can be better understood.During July 2018 the DouAir chamber was brought to the Landes Forest in the southwest of France for the CERVOLAND field campaign (Characterisation of Emissions and Reactivity of Volatile Organic compounds in the LANDes forest). The reactor was used to trap real air masses coming from the surrounding forest - consisting mainly of Pinus pinaster trees - and the captured air was subsequently oxidised within the chamber. Different oxidation regimes were studied: dark oxidation, light oxidation by natural sunlight and light oxidation by artificial UV light with a known spectrum. Oxidation processes within the chamber were monitored by a variety of online instruments, including PTR-ToF-MS (for VOCs), PERCA (for peroxy radicals), O3 and NOx analysers, and CPC (for particles).Here, we present the experimental results from the CERVOLAND field campaign under different oxidation conditions and the results from the 0-D modelling of these experiments using MCM. The focus is on measured and modelled monoterpene oxidation products and possible explanations for measurement-model discrepancies.

Abstract

The chemistry of the atmosphere is usually studied using three different approaches, i.e. field measurements, laboratory studies and chemical model calculations. All three are complementary and powerful means to investigate chemical transformations of pollutants and improve our understanding of the atmosphere. Atmospheric simulation chambers are one of the most direct and critical approaches to mimic and examine chemical transformations under controlled experimental conditions. In combination with box model simulations, they allow assessment of the accuracy of chemical mechanisms implemented in atmospheric models.During the CERVOLAND field campaign (Characterisation of Emissions and Reactivity of Volatile Organic compounds in the LANDes forest) we deployed a new mobile atmospheric chamber (DouAir) to probe the oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in real air masses. Biogenic compounds emitted by the surrounding forest (mainly pines - (Maritime pine, Pinus pinaster Ait) were trapped in DouAir and their transformations were probed using state-of-the-art online instrumentation, including PTR-ToF-MS (VOCs), PERCA (peroxy radicals), O3 and NOx analysers, and SMPS (aerosols).The objectives of the present study were to (1) reproduce in the laboratory selected field experiments performed during CERVOLAND, the chemical composition of the air mass being simplified, and (2) compare both the field and laboratory results to 0-D box model simulations using the Master Chemical Mechanisms (MCM). Comparing field observations, laboratory experiments and model simulations provides a critical test of our understanding of atmospheric oxidation processes involving biogenic compounds.Here, we present ozonolysis experiments of primary biogenic VOCs (mainly monoterpenes) under dark conditions. Initial conditions used for the laboratory experiments were derived from reactant concentrations trapped in DouAir during CERVOLAND. The results show the capability of the model to reproduce oxidation rates of primary VOCs within uncertainty, although the model considerably overestimates measured peroxy radical concentrations. The addition of rapid self- and cross-reactions of monoterpene-derived peroxy radicals in the MCM improves the agreement with the measured peroxy radical concentrations.

Abstract

Total hydroxyl radical (OH) reactivity measurements were conducted during the LANDEX intensive field campaign in a coniferous temperate forest located in the Landes area, southwestern France, during July 2017. In order to investigate inter-canopy and intra-canopy variability, measurements were performed inside (6 m) and above the canopy level (12 m), as well as at two different locations within the canopy, using a comparative reactivity method (CRM) and a laser photolysis–laser-induced fluorescence (LP-LIF) instrument. The two techniques were intercompared at the end of the campaign by performing measurements at the same location. Volatile organic compounds were also monitored at both levels with a proton transfer time-of-flight mass spectrometer and online gas chromatography instruments to evaluate their contribution to total OH reactivity, with monoterpenes being the main reactive species emitted in this forest dominated by Pinus pinaster Aiton. Total OH reactivity varied diurnally, following the trend of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), the emissions and concentrations of which were dependent on meteorological parameters. Average OH reactivity was around 19.2 and 16.5 s−1 inside and above the canopy, respectively. The highest levels of total OH reactivity were observed during nights with a low turbulence (u*≤0.2 m s−1), leading to lower mixing of emitted species within the canopy and thus an important vertical stratification characterized by a strong concentration gradient. Comparing the measured and the calculated OH reactivity highlighted an average missing OH reactivity of 22 % and 33 % inside and above the canopy, respectively. A day–night variability was observed on missing OH reactivity at both heights. Investigations showed that during daytime, missing OH sinks could be due to primary emissions and secondary products linked to a temperature-enhanced photochemistry. Regarding nighttime missing OH reactivity, higher levels were seen for the stable and warm night of 4–5 July, showing that these conditions could have been favorable for the accumulation of long-lived species (primary and secondary species) during the transport of the air mass from nearby forests.

Abstract

In September 2017, we conducted a proton-transfer-reaction mass-spectrometry (PTR-MS) intercomparison campaign at the CESAR observatory, a rural site in the central Netherlands near the village of Cabauw. Nine research groups deployed a total of 11 instruments covering a wide range of instrument types and performance. We applied a new calibration method based on fast injection of a gas standard through a sample loop. This approach allows calibrations on timescales of seconds, and within a few minutes an automated sequence can be run allowing one to retrieve diagnostic parameters that indicate the performance status. We developed a method to retrieve the mass-dependent transmission from the fast calibrations, which is an essential characteristic of PTR-MS instruments, limiting the potential to calculate concentrations based on counting statistics and simple reaction kinetics in the reactor/drift tube. Our measurements show that PTR-MS instruments follow the simple reaction kinetics if operated in the standard range for pressures and temperature of the reaction chamber (i.e. 1–4 mbar, 30–120∘, respectively), as well as a reduced field strength E∕N in the range of 100–160 Td. If artefacts can be ruled out, it becomes possible to quantify the signals of uncalibrated organics with accuracies better than ±30 %. The simple reaction kinetics approach produces less accurate results at E∕N levels below 100 Td, because significant fractions of primary ions form water hydronium clusters. Deprotonation through reactive collisions of protonated organics with water molecules needs to be considered when the collision energy is a substantial fraction of the exoergicity of the proton transfer reaction and/or if protonated organics undergo many collisions with water molecules.

Abstract

Ambient air ranks number one among the natural resources vital to human beings, with an average individual daily need of 12 kg. Due to the specificities of the Mediterranean region (sunny, hot and dry climate; long-range transport converging over the basin), air pollution in reactive compounds over the Mediterranean is often higher than in most European inland regions. Climate change (increase in temperature and drought) and anthropogenic pressure (growing population) should significantly impact the regional air quality. As a result, Mediterranean inhabitants who are already regularly exposed to pollutant loads well above WHO air quality recommendations will be further exposed, resulting in an excess of premature deaths. Exposure monitoring and win-win strategies should be developed in the future both to improve air quality and develop a low carbon economy. The evolution of emissions under climate change is not always clear and much uncertainty remains around present emissions from large urban-industrial centers, although recent progress has been made on emissions of the different regional sources of pollutants. It has been established that the regional climate and water cycle are affected by atmospheric chemistry. By reducing solar radiation at the surface, aerosols reduce the yearly average precipitation in the Mediterranean by 10%, which is a major issue since water is already scarce. Aerosols could further reduce precipitations by reducing the size of cloud droplets or through the formation of cloud droplets and ice crystals. Moreover, recent in situ and model experiments indicate that anthropogenic nitrogen and desert dust phosphorus deposition in nutrient-depleted surface seawater favors phytoplankton development, which stimulates the sink of atmospheric CO2 into marine sediments. But Saharan dust deposition by rain also stimulates bacterial growth, which reemits CO2. The net effect of desert dust deposition at large scales needs to be established. L’air est sans aucun doute la ressource naturelle la plus essentielle à l’homme: chaque jour 12 kg d’air sont nécessaires à sa survie. Du fait des spécificités de la région méditerranéenne (climat ensoleillé, chaud et sec; convergence de masses d’air d’horizons lointains), la pollution de l’air en espèces réactives y est souvent plus forte que dans la plupart de l’Europe continentale. Les changements climatiques (augmentation des sécheresses et de la température) et la pression démographique devraient dégrader encore la qualité de l’air. En conséquence, les habitants de la Méditerranée qui sont déjà régulièrement soumis à des niveaux de pollution bien au-dessus des recommandations de l’OMS devraient se trouver plus exposés encore, ce qui engendrera une surmortalité. Un meilleur suivi de l’exposition des habitants et des solutions « gagnant-gagnant » devraient être mises en place dans le but d’améliorer la qualité de l’air et de s’engager dans une économie décarbonée. Les conséquences des changements climatiques sur les émissions de polluants par les principales sources régionales ne sont pas toujours très claires. Il a été établi que le climat régional et le cycle de l’eau sont altérés par la chimie de l’atmosphère. En réduisant le flux solaire en surface, les aérosols réduisent les précipitations moyennes annuelles de 10 % en moyenne sur le bassin méditerranéen, réduisant un peu plus une ressource déjà rare. Les aérosols pourraient réduire plus encore les précipitations en réduisant la taille des gouttes d’eau dans les nuages ou en agissant sur la formation de cristaux de glaces. Par ailleurs, de récentes expériences indiquent que le dépôt atmosphérique d’azote et le phosphore issu des poussières désertiques à la surface des eaux pauvres en nutriments de la Méditerranée favorise le développement du phytoplancton activant par la même occasion l’absorption de CO2 par l’océan. Cependant, il a aussi été observé que le dépôt de poussières favorise le développement de bactéries qui elles-mêmes rejettent du CO2 du fait de la respiration. L’effet net du dépôt de ces poussières à grande échelle reste à établir.

Abstract

Terrestrial ecosystems are simultaneously the largest source and a major sink of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the global atmosphere, and these two-way fluxes are an important source of uncertainty in current models. Here, we apply high-resolution mass spectrometry (proton transfer reaction-quadrupole interface time-of-flight; PTR-QiTOF) to measure ecosystem-atmosphere VOC fluxes across the entire detected mass range (m/z 0-335) over a mixed temperate forest and use the results to test how well a state-of-science chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem CTM) is able to represent the observed reactive carbon exchange. We show that ambient humidity fluctuations can give rise to spurious VOC fluxes with PTR-based techniques and present a method to screen for such effects. After doing so, 377 of the 636 detected ions exhibited detectable gross fluxes during the study, implying a large number of species with active ecosystem-atmosphere exchange. We introduce the reactivity flux as a measure of how Earth-atmosphere fluxes influence ambient OH reactivity and show that the upward total VOC (-VOC) carbon and reactivity fluxes are carried by a far smaller number of species than the downward fluxes. The model underpredicts the -VOC carbon and reactivity fluxes by 40-60% on average. However, the observed net fluxes are dominated (90% on a carbon basis, 95% on a reactivity basis) by known VOCs explicitly included in the CTM. As a result, the largest CTM uncertainties in simulating VOC carbon and reactivity exchange for this environment are associated with known rather than unrepresented species. This conclusion pertains to the set of species detectable by PTR-TOF techniques, which likely represents the majority in terms of carbon mass and OH reactivity, but not necessarily in terms of aerosol formation potential. In the case of oxygenated VOCs, the model severely underpredicts the gross fluxes and the net exchange. Here, unrepresented VOCs play a larger role, accounting for ∼30% of the carbon flux and ∼50% of the reactivity flux. The resulting CTM biases, however, are still smaller than those that arise from uncertainties for known and represented compounds.
