Abstract

In this work, a natural bentonite was submitted to heating treatment (at 550°C and 750°C) in order to correlate such treatment to an improvement of the metal adsorption properties. The characterization of all materials includes XRD, FTIR, TGA, SEM analysis and porosity measurements. The efficiency of raw and calcined bentonite to remove nickel and silver from aqueous solution was highlighted and fell in the upper range when compared to material of similar composition taken from the literature. Raw and bentonite calcined at 550°C properties toward metal retention remained in such upper range of efficiency when tested in complex effluents like industrials wastewaters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Patients with Parkinson's disease often have abnormalities of function of the autonomic nervous system. The abnormalities include lower blood pressure when lying down and suddenly standing up, lower norepinephrine response when standing up, and reduced sensitivity to adrenalin. These observations have been made on Parkinson's patients with established disease who have, in general, been under drug therapy for their condition. As a part of the evaluation of a new drug for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, researchers evaluated the blood pressure and catecholamine responses in six patients with early-stage disease who had never undergone drug treatment. The effectiveness of the new drug, CY 238-243, has not yet been reported, but the effects of the drug on autonomic nervous system function were measured and compared in the patients and nine age-matched volunteer subjects. The researchers were unable to detect abnormalities of cardiovascular regulation in the Parkinson's patients, which suggests that the previously reported abnormalities may be a result of drug treatment or more advanced Parkinson's disease. The drug CY 208-243, which acts as an agonist of the D1 dopamine receptors in the nervous system, was found to decrease resting systolic blood pressure and to reduce the levels of circulating norepinephrine. The drug also reduced the heart rate and blunted the physiological response to standing up. The increase in blood pressure and the increase in circulating norepinephrine, which normally occur upon standing, were reduced by CY 208-243. These results indicate that D1 dopamine receptors in the brain play an important role in the normal regulation of sympathetic tone. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Abstract

Electronic sets operated on aircraft are usually summarized as “avionic architectures” (for "aviation electronic architecture"). Since the 70s, avionic architectures, composed of digital processing modules and communication buses, are supporting more and more avionic applications such as flight control, flight management, etc. Hence, avionic architectures have become a central component of an aircraft. They have to ensure a large variety of important requirements: safety, robustness to equipment failures, determinism, and real-time. In response to these requirements, aircraft manufacturers have proposed several solutions. This article has a twin objectives: firstly to survey the state of the art of existing avionic architectures, including the IMA (for Integrated Modular Avionic) architecture of the most recent aircraft; and secondly to discuss two challenges for the next generation of avionic architectures: reconfiguration capabilities, and integrating COTS processing equipment such as multi-core processors. Abstract

The fourth issue of the journal Aerospace Lab is devoted to various techniques of information processing that manage complex interactions. The term "complex" is a bit overused but here it refers to the size of the problems that cannot be tackled using more straightforward approaches. The papers presented address a range of basic techniques. The first group addresses embedded information processing algorithms for control and perception, and also some issues about interaction between increasingly complicated systems and operators who have to manage them in real time.
