Thin films of the high-temperature superconductor HgBa$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{6+\delta}$ have been prepared on SrTiO$_3$ substrates by pulsed-laser deposition of precursor films and subsequent annealing in mercury-vapor atmosphere. The microstructural properties of such films can vary considerably and have been analyzed by x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. Whereas the resistivity is significantly enhanced in samples with coarse-grained structure, the Hall effect shows little variation. This disparity is discussed based on models for transport properties in granular materials. We find that, despite of the morphological variation, all samples have similar superconducting properties. The critical temperatures $T_c \sim 121.2$ K $\dots 122.0$ K, resistivity, and Hall data indicate that the samples are optimally doped. The analyses of superconducting order parameter fluctuations in zero and finite magnetic fields yield the in-plane $\xi_{ab}(0) \sim 2.3$ nm $\dots 2.8$ nm and out-of-plane $\xi_{c}(0) \sim 0.17$ nm $ \dots 0.24$ nm Ginzburg-Landau coherence lengths at zero temperature. Hall measurements provide estimates of carrier scattering defects in the normal state and vortex pinning properties in the superconducting state inside the grains., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

YBCO fabrics composed of nanowires, produced by solution blow spinning (SBS) are so brittle that the Lorentz force produced by induced currents can be strong enough to damage them. On the other hand, it is known that silver addition improves the mechanical and flux pinning properties of ceramic superconductors. Thus, in this work, we show how we successfully obtained a polymeric precursor solution containing YBCO$+$Ag salts, which can be spun by the SBS route to produce ceramic samples. Yttrium, barium, copper, and silver metal acetates, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (in a ratio of 5:1wt [PVP:acetates]) were dissolved in a solution with 61.5 wt\% of methanol, 12 wt\% of propionic acid, and 26.5 wt\% of ammonium hydroxide, together with 6 wt\% of PVP in solution. Three different amounts of silver (10 wt\%, 20 wt\%, and 30 wt\%) were used in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$. The TGA characterizations revealed a lowering of crystallization and partial melting temperatures by about \SI{30}{\celsius}. SEM images show that after burning out the polymer, a fabric composed of nanowires of diameters up to \SI{380}{\nano \metre} is produced. A trapped field of over 3 T has been measured at 17.5 K in a magnetised stack of two disc-shaped bulk MgB2 superconductors of diameter 25 mm and thickness 5.4 mm. The bulk MgB2 samples were fabricated by uniaxial hot pressing, which is a readily scalable, industrial technique, to 91% of their maximum theoretical density. The macroscopic critical current density derived from the trapped field data using the Biot-Savart law is consistent with the measured local critical current density. From this we conclude that critical current density, and therefore trapped field performance, is limited by the flux pinning available in MgB2, rather than by lack of connectivity. This suggests strongly that both increasing sample size and enhancing pinning through doping will allow further increases in trapped field performance of bulk MgB2., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. The Fe-based superconductors (FBS) are an important new class of superconducting materials. As with any new superconductor with a high transition temperature and upper critical field, there is a need to establish what their applications potential might be. Applications require high critical current densities, so the usefulness of any new superconductor is determined both by the capability to develop strong vortex pinning and by the absence or ability to overcome any strong current-limiting mechanisms of which grain boundaries in the cuprates are a cautionary example. In this review we first consider the positive role that grain boundary properties play in the metallic, low temperature superconductors and then review the theoretical background and current experimental data relating to the properties of grain boundaries in FBS polycrystals, bi-crystal thin films, and wires. Based on this evidence, we conclude that grain boundaries in FBS are weak linked in a qualitatively similar way to grain boundaries in the cuprate superconductors, but also that the effects are a little less marked. Initial experiments with the textured substrates used for cuprate coated conductors show similar benefit for the critical current density of FBS thin films too. We also note that the particular richness of the pairing symmetry and the multiband parent state in FBS may provide opportunities for grain boundary modification as a better understanding of their pairing state and grain boundary properties are developed., Comment: To appear in Reports on Progress in Physics

We discuss predictions of five proposed theories for the critical state of type-II superconductors accounting for both flux cutting and flux transport (depinning). The theories predict different behaviours for the ratio $E_y/E_z$ of the transverse and parallel components of the in-plane electric field produced just above the critical current of a type-II superconducting slab as a function of the angle of an in-plane applied magnetic field. We present experimental results measured using an epitaxially grown YBCO thin film favoring one of the five theories: the extended elliptic critical-state model. We conclude that when the current density $\bm J$ is neither parallel nor perpendicular to the local magnetic flux density $\bm B$, both flux cutting and flux transport occur simultaneously when $J$ exceeds the critical current density $J_c$, indicating an intimate relationship between flux cutting and depinning. We also conclude that the dynamical properties of the superconductor when $J$ exceeds $J_c$ depend in detail upon two nonlinear effective resistivities for flux cutting ($\rho_c$) and flux flow ($\rho_f$) and their ratio $r= \rho_c/\rho_f$., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Supercond. We have investigated single grain boundaries (GBs) isolated in coated conductors produced by Metal-Organic Deposition (MOD). When a magnetic field is swept in the film plane, an angle-dependent crossover from boundary to grain limited critical current density Jc is found. In the force-free orientation, even at fields as high as 8 T, the GBs still limit Jc. We deduce that this effect is a direct consequence of GB meandering. We have employed these single GB results to explain the dependence of Jc of polycrystalline tracks on their width: in-plane measurements become flatter as the tracks are narrowed down. This result is consistent with the stronger GB limitation at field configurations close to force-free found from the isolated boundaries. Our study shows that for certain geometries even at high fields the effect of GBs cannot be neglected.

We identify a scalable, practical route to fabricating a superconducting diode. The device relies for its function on the barrier to flux vortex entry being reduced at the substrate interface of a superconducting pinning enhanced YBa2Cu3O7-d nano-composite film. We show that these composite systems provide a practical route to fabricating a useful superconducting diode and demonstrate the rectification of an alternating current., Comment: Version as accepted by APL

We report on the in-plane magnetic field (H) dependence of the critical current density (Jc) in meandered and planar single grain boundaries (GBs) isolated in YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) coated conductors. The Jc(H)properties of the planar GB are consistent with those previously seen in single GBs of YBCO films grown on SrTiO3 bi-crystals. In the straight boundary a characteristic flux channeling regime when H is oriented near the GB plane, associated with a reduced Jc, is seen. The meandered GB does not show vortex channeling since it is not possible for a sufficient length of vortex line to lie within it., Comment: Submitted to APL

Vortex breaking has been traditionally studied for nonuniform critical current densities, although it may also appear due to nonuniform pinning force distributions. In this article we study the case of a high-pinning/low-pinning/high-pinning layered structure. We have developed an elastic model for describing the deformation of a vortex in these systems in the presence of a uniform transport current density $J$ for any arbitrary orientation of the transport current and the magnetic field. If $J$ is above a certain critical value, $J_c$, the vortex breaks and a finite effective resistance appears. Our model can be applied to some experimental configurations where vortex breaking naturally exists. This is the case for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) low angle grain boundaries and films on vicinal substrates, where the breaking is experienced by Abrikosov-Josephson vortices (AJV) and Josephson string vortices (SV), respectively. With our model, we have experimentally extracted some intrinsic parameters of the AJV and SV, such as the line tension $\epsilon_l$ and compared it to existing predictions based on the vortex structure., Comment: 11 figures in 13 files; minor changes after printing proofs

The critical current (Jc) of highly twinned YBa2Cu3O7 films has been measured as a function of temperature, magnetic field and angle. For much of the parameter space we observe a strong suppression of Jc for fields in the twin boundary (TB) directions; this is quantitatively modeled as flux-cutting-mediated vortex channeling. For certain temperatures and fields a cross-over occurs to a regime in which channeling is blocked and the TBs act as planar pinning centers so that TB pinning enhances the overall Jc. In this regime, intrinsic pinning along the TBs is comparable to that between the twins., Comment: Submitted to PRL

Superconducting compounds of the family Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O have been the subject of intense study since the current record-holder for the highest critical temperature of a superconductor belongs to this class of materials. Thin films of the compound with two adjacent copper-oxide layers and a critical temperature of about 120 K were prepared by a two-step process that consists of the pulsed-laser deposition of precursor films and the subsequent annealing in mercury-vapor atmosphere. Like some other high-temperature superconductors, Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O exhibits a specific anomaly of the Hall effect, a double-sign change of the Hall coefficient close to the superconducting transition. We have investigated this phenomenon by measurements of the Hall effect at different angles between the magnetic field direction and the crystallographic c-axis. The results concerning the upper part of the transition, where the first sign change occurs, are discussed in terms of the renormalized fluctuation model for the Hall conductivity, adapted through the field rescaling procedure in order to take into account the arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field., Comment: to be published in Phys. We report a novel negative magnetocaloric effect in CoMnSi_{1-x}Ge_{x} arising from a metamagnetic magnetoelastic transition. The effect is of relevance to magnetic refrigeration over a wide range of temperature, including room temperature. In addition we report a very high shift in the metamagnetic transition temperature with applied magnetic field. This is driven by competition between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic order which can be readily tuned by applied pressure and compositional changes., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, REVTeX, submitted to Physical Review

The critical currents of MOD/RABiTS and PLD/IBAD coated conductors have been measured as a function of magnetic field orientation and compared to films grown on single crystal substrates. By varying the orientation of magnetic field applied in the plane of the film, we are able to determine the extent to which current flow in each type of conductor is percolative. Standard MOD/RABiTS conductors have also been compared to samples whose grain boundaries have been doped by diffusing Ca from an overlayer. We find that undoped MOD/RABiTS tapes have a less anisotropic in-plane field dependence than PLD/IBAD tapes and that the uniformity of critical current as a function of in-plane field angle is greater for MOD/RABiTS samples doped with Ca., Comment: Submitted to APL

Most measurements of critical current densities in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ thin films to date have been performed on films where the \textit{c}-axis is grown normal to the film surface. With such films, the analysis of the dependence of $j_c$ on the magnetic field angle is complex. The effects of extrinsic contributions to the angular field dependence of $j_c$, such as the measurement geometry and disposition of pinning centres, are convoluted with those intrinsically due to the anisotropy of the material. As a consequence of this, it is difficult to distinguish between proposed FLL structure models on the basis of angular critical current density measurements on \textit{c}-axis films. Films grown on mis-cut (vicinal) substrates have a reduced measurement symmetry and thus provide a greater insight into the critical current anisotropy. In this paper previous descriptions of the magnetic field angle dependence of $j_c$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ are reviewed. Measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ thin films grown on a range of vicinal substrates are presented and the results interpreted in terms of the structure and dimensionality of the FLL in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$. There is strong evidence for a transition in the structure of the flux line lattice depending on magnetic field magnitude, orientation and temperature. As a consequence, a simple scaling law can not, by itself, describe the observed critical current anisotropy in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$. The high $T_{c}$ cuprate superconductors are noted for their anisotropic layered structure, certain of these materials indeed tend toward the limit of a Lawrence-Doniach superconductor. However, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ has a smaller anisotropy than would be expected from its interlayer spacing. This is due to the cuprate chains in the structure. To investigate the influence of the chain oxygen on transport properties critical current versus applied field angle measurements were performed on fully oxygenated and de-oxygenated YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ thin films and optimally oxygenated Y$_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.2}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ thin films. The films were grown on 10$^{\circ}$ mis-cut SrTiO$_3$ substrates to enable the intrinsic vortex channelling effect to be observed. The form of the vortex channelling minimum observed in field angle dependent critical current studies on the films was seen to depend on film oxygenation. The vortex channelling effect is dependent on a angular dependent cross-over to a string-pancake flux line lattice. The results obtained appear to be consistent with the prediction of Blatter et al. [Rev. Mod. Phys., 66 (4): 1125 (1994)] that increased superconducting anisotropy leads to the kinked string-pancake lattice existing over a smaller angular range., Comment: To be submitted to APL

Transport critical current measurements have been performed on 5 degree [001]-tilt thin film YBa2Cu3O7-delta single grain boundaries with magnetic field rotated in the plane of the film, phi. The variation of the critical current has been determined as a function of the angle between the magnetic field and the grain boundary plane. In applied fields above 1 T the critical current, j_c, is found to be strongly suppressed only when the magnetic field is within an angle phi_k of the grain boundary. Outside this angular range the behavior of the artificial grain boundary is dominated by the critical current of the grains. Field angle dependent critical current, magneto-optical microscopy, and high resolution electron microscopy studies have been performed on YBa2Cu3O7-d thin films grown on mis-cut substrates. High resolution electron microscopy images show that the films studied exhibited clean epitaxial growth with a low density of anti-phase boundaries and stacking faults. Any anti-phase boundaries (APBs) formed near the film substrate interface rapidly healed rather than extending through the thickness of the film. Unlike vicinal films grown on annealed substrates, which contain a high density of anti-phase boundaries, magneto optical imaging showed no filamentary flux penetration in the films studied. The flux penetration is, however, asymmetric. This is associated with intrinsic pinning of flux strings by the tilted a-b planes and the dependence of the pinning force on the angle between the local field and the a-b planes. Field angle dependent critical current measurements exhibited the striking vortex channelling effect previously reported in vicinal films. By combining the results of three complementary characterisation techniques it is shown that extended APB free films exhibit markedly different critical current behaviour as compared to APB rich films. This is attributed to the role of APB sites as strong pinning centres for Josephson string vortices between the a-b planes., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Applied Physics
