The motif of John Brown, the U.S. abolitionist has been handled with extraordinary effect, and yet with curious indecision. According to the author, Brown naturally came along, and Drinkwater, being a wise dramatist, did not turn him out, nor ignore him, but hospitably let him into the story. Yet, no matter how hospitable one may be, an unbidden guest is likely to make the audience uncomfortable. Drinkwater is plainly interested in Brown and yet timid about him. Perhaps he did not know quite what to think about Brown, or rather he did not know what Lincoln thought about him.

In England and the U.S. especially, the falsehood about the "nationalization of women" will prevent many persons from ever considering the Bolsheviks as anything but the most abhorrent monsters. A writer in the Round Table, that excellent "quarterly review of the politics of the British Commonwealth," who knows that Bolshevism is a very real menace to the peace of Europe, believes that there is a need for a purely historical analysis of the Bolshevik movement.

The controlling classes of Italy speaks with proud confidence in the industrial future of their nation, expressing a strong position in redistribution of power in Europe. They talked very openly to Americans, with many an insidious plea for American capital to enter and participate in the development of Italy's great industrial and commercial future. However, the disturbing element is the violent anti-French propaganda, which has been conspicuous in Italy all winter. It is the menacing notion, which actually seems to prevail in many Italian minds that Italy can defeat France in war. Italy's future is assured. It is only for her to decide who are her true friends.
