Abstract

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". In the past, the U.S. Muon Accelerator Programme (MAP) [5] has been instrumental in studies of concepts and technologies for a muon collider., Comment: This document summarises the International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) progress and status of the Muon Collider R&D programme

Abstract

The design of a primary electron beam facility at CERN is described. The study has been carried out within the framework of the wider Physics Beyond Colliders study. It re-enables the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) as an electron accelerator, and leverages the development invested in Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) technology for its injector and as an accelerator research and development infrastructure. The facility would be relevant for several of the key priorities in the 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, such as an electron-positron Higgs factory, accelerator R\&D, dark sector physics, and neutrino physics. In addition, it could serve experiments in nuclear physics. The electron beam delivered by this facility would provide access to light dark matter production significantly beyond the targets predicted by a thermal dark matter origin, and for natures of dark matter particles that are not accessible by direct detection experiments. It would also enable electro-nuclear measurements crucial for precise modelling the energy dependence of neutrino-nucleus interactions, which is needed to precisely measure neutrino oscillations as a function of energy. The implementation of the facility is the natural next step in the development of X-band high-gradient acceleration technology, a key technology for compact and cost-effective electron/positron linacs. It would also become the only facility with multi-GeV drive bunches and truly independent electron witness bunches for plasma wakefield acceleration. A second phase capable to deliver positron witness bunches would make it a complete facility for plasma wakefield collider studies. [...]

Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Subsequent stages will focus on measurements of rare Higgs processes, as well as searches for new physics processes and precision measurements of new states, e.g. states previously discovered at LHC or at CLIC itself. In the 2012 CLIC Conceptual Design Report, a fully optimised 3 TeV collider was presented, while the proposed lower energy stages were not studied to the same level of detail. This report presents an updated baseline staging scenario for CLIC. The scenario is the result of a comprehensive study addressing the performance, cost and power of the CLIC accelerator complex as a function of centre-of-mass energy and it targets optimal physics output based on the current physics landscape. The optimised staging scenario foresees three main centre-of-mass energy stages at 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV for a full CLIC programme spanning 22 years. Abstract

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to understand why and under what conditions employees are likely to partake in a particular type of silence, known as the Hierarchical MUM Effect (HME). This phenomenon occurs when subordinates are reluctant to share bad news with their supervisors, which can lead to deleterious outcomes in organizations due to a lack of communication. The authors also seek to find which conditions minimize HME.Design/methodology/approachThe authors surveyed employees in a large healthcare organization across three weeks. The authors analyzed their results using the SPSS PROCESS macro.FindingsThe authors’ findings suggest one way to minimize a lack of upward communication is to empower employees, via a high-quality LMX relationship, and move away from a bottom-line mentality focus. Employees who are empowered show lower instances of withholding information via HME. A low bottom-line mentality enhanced this relationship.Originality/valueThe authors expand understanding of antecedents to a particular type of silence, the HME, defined as purposefully withholding information from a supervisor or sharing information in a way that silences the dirty details of a situation (i.e. equivocating). Although a wealth of research examines the deleterious consequences of a high BLM, the authors highlight the positive work outcomes associated with a low BLM.

30. Integration, (de-)installation and alignment

Abstract

The HL-LHC will require modifying the machine and infrastructure installations of the LHC in several points along the Accelerator Ring, in particular: P1, P2, P4, P5, P6, P7 and P8. Part of the modifications and improvement in P2, P4, P7 and P8 shall be completed during Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) and be operational for LHC Run 3, while the largest part of the interventions will take place in Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) and they will affect primarily P1, P4, P5, P6 and P7. The activities required point by point will be therefore listed and analysed here below. The Project evolution has allowed and obliged to revise and refine the previous integration plan. Here below the main changes are singled out - Point 1 and Point 5 o The LHC Machine layout has been made compliant with the optics version 1.4 that integrates the deployment of the Full Remote Alignment and the results of the matching section optimization. The present layout is based on updated and refined equipment designs considering the progress of the engineering design of each system. This includes in particular: magnet cryostats, DFX, Crab Cavity cryo-modules, collimators that have all seen important evolution in their design. o The system optimization implied a revision of the localization of some of the equipment, i.e. the power converters feeding the circuits of the Higher Order correctors magnets that are in the Corrector Package have been moved from the new HL-LHC underground infrastructures to the service alcoves of the LHC tunnel. o Following the refinement of the services design and the machine equipment requirements, the full integration in the new HL-LHC underground infrastructures has been reviewed. The integration activity in this area is strictly linked to the finalization of the construction design of the caverns that are being built during LS2. o In a similar way, and for the same reasons, the integration of the new surface buildings and the connecting technical galleries has been revisited in detail, leading to an optimization in the gallery topology and refinement in the building design. Point 4: o The cryogenic system upgrade at Point 4 has been reviewed. In order to support the operation in Sector 3-4 (that is fed by a refrigerator unit inherited from the LEP machine) the refrigerator will be upgraded, but without impacting the cryogenic distribution network. The previously foreseen mobile refrigerator that was foreseen to cool the LHC RF accelerating cavities for testing and conditioning purposes has been abandoned. o The conceptual design of the Hollow-Electron Lenses has been integrated in the tunnel together with their services validating the design choices. Point 6 o The previous foreseen upgrade of the Q5 units has been abandoned.The presently installed units will be operated in the HL-LHC configuration as they currently are in the existing LHC configuration. o The horizontal beam dump dilution kicker system is planned to be upgraded with the installation of one additional kicker module for each beam. o The Beam Dump block will be upgraded already in LS2 with new upstream windows. Abstract

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up anew energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 9000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its instantaneous luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design valueand the integrated luminosity (totalnumber of collisions) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complexand exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require new infrastructures(underground and on surface)and over a decade to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), relies on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11–12Tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 100 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation, all of which required several years of dedicated R&D; effort on a global international level. The present document describes the technologies and components that will be used to realise the projectand is intended to serve as the basis for the detailed engineering design of the HL-LHC.

Abstract

Recent estimates suggest that up to 34% of frontline workers in healthcare (FLWs) at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic response are reporting elevated symptoms of psychological distress due to resource constraints, ineffective treatments, and concerns about self-contamination. However, little systematic research has been carried out to assess the mental health needs of FLWs in Europe, or the extent of psychological suffering in FLWs within different European countries of varying outbreak severity. Accordingly, this project will employ a mixed-methods approach over three work packages to develop best-practice guidelines for alleviating psychological distress in FLWs during the different phases of the pandemic. Work package 1 will identify the point and long-term prevalence of psychological distress symptoms in a sample of Irish and Italian FLWs, and the predictors of these symptoms. Work package 2 will perform a qualitative needs assessment on a sample of Irish and Italian FLWs to identify sources of stress and resilience, barriers to psychological care, and optimal strategies for alleviating psychological distress in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. Work package 3 will synthesise the findings from the preceding work packages to draft best practice guidelines, which will be co-created by a multidisciplinary panel of experts using the Delphi method. The guidelines will provide clinicians with a framework for alleviating psychological distress in FLWs, with particular relevance to the COVID-19 pandemic, but may also have relevance for future pandemics and other public health emergencies.

Abstract

Research was conducted to examine the initial steps in the development of ultrathin carbon films on a carbon highly oriented pyrolitic graphite substrate by the deposition of low energy carbon ions at temperatures ranging from ambient to 300 degrees C. An ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used in the observation of film growth. Results demonstrate that scaling analysis of roughness is a powerful tool in clarifying STM images.

Abstract

Fishmeal and fish oil are largely used as input to several animal feed industries all around the world, but there is a lack of life cycle assessments (LCAs) on Peruvian fishmeal plants, despite their predominance in the global supply. LCAs where performed on three different types of Peruvian fishmeal plants with the objective of comparing them and suggesting ways of limiting their impacts. The LCA results can be nested into LCAs of animal feed. Two system boundaries were used: one including the fishery and another excluding it in order to enable other practitioners to use our generic life cycle inventory (LCI) data and LCI analysis. The effects of different processing rates and qualities of fishmeal on environmental impacts were compared. We used the SimaPro software, the ecoinvent 2.2 database and the ReCiPe method. In contrast to many LCA studies, the construction and maintenance phases were considered. Despite the predominant impact of the use phase, in particular consumption of fossil energy, these two phases contribute significantly (>10% using the ReCiPe single score) when fishing is excluded from the system boundaries. Furthermore, existing screening LCAs of the use phase largely underestimate (similar to 20%) its environmental impacts. The environmental benefit of using natural gas instead of heavy fuel as energy source, in terms of reduced impacts, is huge, reaching 41% of the ReCiPe single score when fishing is excluded and 30% when included. The comparison of environmental impacts between different qualities of fishmeal shows higher impacts of residual fishmeal, intermediate impact of standard fishmeal and lower impacts of Prime fishmeal, the difference between extreme values being more than twofold. Future studies on other fishmeal and residual fishmeal plants should take into account the construction and maintenance phases, and more items in the use phase than in historical screenings. There is room to decrease the environmental impact of this industry in Peru.
