1. Ultrasonic triggering of giant magnetocaloric effect in MnAs thin films

Abstract

Mechanical control of magnetic properties in magnetostrictive thin films offers the unexplored opportunity to employ surface wave acoustics in such a way that acoustic triggers dynamic magnetic effects. The strain-induced modulation of the magnetic anisotropy can play the role of a high frequency varying effective magnetic field leading to ultrasonic tuning of electronic and magnetic properties of nanostructured materials, eventually integrated in semiconductor technology. Here, we report about the opportunity to employ surface acoustic waves to trigger magnetocaloric effect in MnAs(100nm)/GaAs(001) thin films. During the MnAs magnetostructural phase transition, in an interval range around room temperature (0{\deg}C - 60{\deg}C), ultrasonic waves (170 MHz) are strongly attenuated by the phase coexistence (up to 150 dB/cm). We show that the giant magnetocaloric effect of MnAs is responsible of the observed phenomenon. By a simple anelastic model we describe the temperature and the external magnetic field dependence of such a huge ultrasound attenuation. Strain-manipulation of the magnetocaloric effect could be a further interesting route for dynamic and static caloritronics and spintronics applications in semiconductor technology.

2. Thermal conductivity of semiconductor superlattices: Experimental study of interface scattering

Abstract

We present thermal conductivity measurements performed in three short-period (GaAs)_9(AlAs)_5 superlattices. The samples were grown at different temperatures, leading to different small scale roughness and broadening of the interfaces. The cross-plane conductivity is measured with a differential 3w method, at room temperature. The order of magnitude of the overall thermal conductivity variation is consistent with existing theoretical models, although the actual variation is smaller than expected.

Abstract

Magnonics is a budding research field in nanomagnetism and nanoscience that addresses the use of spin waves (magnons) to transmit, store, and process information. The rapid advancements of this field during last one decade in terms of upsurge in research papers, review articles, citations, proposals of devices as well as introduction of new sub-topics prompted us to present the first roadmap on magnonics. This is a collection of 22 sections written by leading experts in this field who review and discuss the current status besides presenting their vision of future perspectives. Today, the principal challenges in applied magnonics are the excitation of sub-100 nm wavelength magnons, their manipulation on the nanoscale and the creation of sub-micrometre devices using low-Gilbert damping magnetic materials and its interconnections to standard electronics. To this end, magnonics offers lower energy consumption, easier integrability and compatibility with CMOS structure, reprogrammability, shorter wavelength, smaller device features, anisotropic properties, negative group velocity, non-reciprocity and efficient tunability by various external stimuli to name a few. Hence, despite being a young research field, magnonics has come a long way since its early inception. This roadmap asserts a milestone for future emerging research directions in magnonics, and hopefully, it will inspire a series of exciting new articles on the same topic in the coming years.

8. Thermal conductivity measurements of Yb:CaF2 transparent ceramics using the 3ω method.

Abstract

This paper reports on the measurement of the thermal conductivity of ytterbium doped CaF2 transparent ceramics using the 3ω method. Samples with different doping levels were studied in a temperature range of 10K to 310 K. The results for doped samples are very similar to those obtained for Yb:CaF2 single crystals with the same doping levels, which demonstrates an important improvement in the thermal properties of transparent ceramics. However, the results obtained for non-doped ceramics and single crystals differ for the maximum conductivity due to the presence of grain boundaries inside the ceramic. Theoretical calculations were also conducted using Callaway's model and are in a very good agreement with experimental results. The fitting parameters found tend to indicate that the introduction of a doping element in the lattice has more impact on thermal conductivity than the presence of grain boundaries in the material. Abstract

The resonant interaction of surface acoustic waves and spin waves is a potential new tool to handle information. However, the natural precession frequencies of most ferromagnetic materials lie in the 10 GHz range, i.e. far above present common technology for surface acoustic waves. This feature restricts the range of materials of interest. To expand this range, we present here measurements of the acoustic attenuation and velocity, at room temperature, in epitaxial Fe on GaAs(001). Resonant coupling is observed in the sub-GHz regime by proper selection of the orientation and intensity of the applied magnetic field. With a very simple magnetization dynamics model that takes into account the softening of the magnetic precession modes, we are able to describe the observed salient features.

Abstract

In all-optical pump-probe experiments on ferromagnetic layers, the determination of the temperature under the pump laser spot is crucial for a quantitative modeling of the magnetization dynamics. We present here a method to quantify this thermal gradient, exemplified on a (Ga, Mn)(As, P) ferromagnetic semiconductor layer on a GaAs substrate. To estimate the local steady-state temperature, we use the coercive field as a thermometer. The probe records the hysteresis cycle spatially across the hot spot, using the magnetic linear birefringence/dichroism of the sample. Our results are analyzed using the heat diffusion equation with two fitting parameters, the thermal conductivity of the layer/ substrate sample and the thermal resistance between the substrate and the thermostat. This opens the way to a quantitative modeling of laser pulse-triggered magnetization dynamics in the presence of transient temperature effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rosticher for optical and electronic lithography., Resonant magnetoelastic coupling (MEC) is demonstrated in an Fe thin film epitaxially grown on a piezoelectric GaAs substrate with application of subgigahertz surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The frequency at which resonant MEC is achieved is reduced far below 1 GHz by the application of a small in-plane magnetic field. Moreover, the resonance, observable by attenuation and velocity changes of the SAW, can be switched on and off by a small (0.1 ºC) angular rotation of this in-plane field. This angular sensitivity makes SAW-ferromagnet devices attractive for sensing applications, such as wireless, battery-free, and interrogable magnetic-field monitors. Abstract

Publiée sous le titre Optical Probing of Rayleigh Wave Driven Magneto-acoustic Resonance; International audience; The resonant interaction of electrically excited traveling surface acoustic waves and magnetization has hitherto been probed through the acoustic component. In this work we investigated it using time-resolved magneto-optical detection of magnetization dynamics. To that end, we develop an experimental scheme where laser pulses are used both to generate the acoustic wave frequency and to probe magnetization dynamics, thus ensuring perfect phase locking. The light-polarization dependence of the signal enables us to disentangle elasto-optical and magneto-optical contributions and to obtain the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the magnetization dynamics. Magnetization precession is proven to be driven solely by the acoustic wave. Its amplitude is shown to resonate at the same field at which we detect piezoelectrically the resonant attenuation of the acoustic wave, clearly evidencing the magnetoacoustic resonance with high sensitivity.

Abstract

Thermoreflectance experiments are sensitive to the thermal properties of thin layers deposited on substrates (conductivity and diffusivity). However, retrieving these properties from experimental data remains a difficult issue. The case of a conducting layer deposited on an insulating substrate was studied previously. We present here a mathematical and experimental analysis of the thermoreflectance response in the opposite case: an insulating layer on a conducting substrate. We show theoretically that conductivity and diffusivity can be determined independently thanks to a comparison with the substrate. New explicit analytical formulations of the solution of the heat diffusion equation are derived by using Bessel, Struve and Meijer-G functions in the 3[omega] geometry for bulk solids. The expressions have enabled rigorous derivations of the asymptotic behaviors and have indicated that the diffusivity is extracted from the phase data without any calibration.

43. Ultrasonic study of tunnelling defects in amorphous Se, Ge and Se-Ge compounds

Abstract

We have measured, in the 100 MHz range and between 0-1K and 10 K, the velocity and the attenuation of ultrasonic waves propagating in amorphous Se, amorphous Ge and amorphous Se-Ge compounds. The results are explained in the framework of the theory of two-level systems. In particular, the existence of a two- level system in a tetracoordinated amorphous network is clearly revealed. Moreover, we report variations of the coupling parameter of the two-level system as a function of the rigidity of the network and explain these in terms of the density and the deformation potential of the two-level systems.

Abstract

International audience; A molecular dynamics investigation of the thermal conductivity of superlattices is presented. The interface roughness is modeled using rectangular islands, as in the case of realistic interfaces. Our results confirm the findings of previous studies. When interfaces with heights of two monolayers are considered, the thermal conductivity is higher than that in the case of perfect interfaces.
