The development of self-assembled dyes able to display J-aggregation-induced emission has gained a renewed interest as an appealing and distinctive approach for the design of smart photoactive materials. F-BODIPY dyes have been exploited to this aim since J-type supramolecular organization has been effectively photoinduced under specific surrounding conditions (hydrophilic or constrained media) although, up to date, it has never been observed in pure organic media. Herein, we report the first systematic study of the self-assembly properties of F-BODIPYs in pure organic solvents and analyze in depth the control exerted by the substitution pattern of its carbon skeleton into the formation of emissive J-aggregates. Spontaneous J-aggregation in F-BODIPYs is evidenced by their lasing properties and supported by the analysis of their solid-state photophysics and X-ray crystalline packing as well as by molecular dynamics in solvent cages. These studies point out the key role of the stereoelectronic properties of the substituents orthogonally grafted at the dipyrrin core (meso and C-2 and C-6 positions) as the main driving force to control the molecular stacking arrangement of F-BODIPYs in common organic solvents. The understanding of the interplay between the molecular structure and the properties of the resulting aggregates sheds light on the workability of BODIPY-based self-assembly as a tool for advanced luminescent materials.

We envisioned a new approach for achieving triplet-triplet annihilation-assisted photon upconversion based on the rational design of a heavy-atom-free, all-organic and photoactivatable triplet-triplet synergistic multichromophoric molecular assembly. This single molecular architecture is easily built by covalently anchoring triplet-annihilator units (pyrenes) to a triplet-photosensitizer moiety (BODIPY), to improve the effectiveness and probability of the required triplet-triplet energy transfer and the ulterior triplet-triplet annihilation. This unprecedented design takes advantage of the high synthetic accessibility and chemical versatility of the COO-BODIPY scaffold. The laser-induced photophysical characterization, assisted by computational simulations (quantum mechanics calculations at single molecular level and molecular dynamics in a solvent cage), identifies the key factors to finely control the intersystem crossing and reverse intersystem crossing probability, pivotal to improve energy transfer efficiency between the involved triplet states. Likewise, theoretical simulations highlight the relevance of the new photoactivable chromophoric design to promote intra- and inter-molecular triplet-triplet annihilation towards enhanced photon upconversion, yielding noticeable fluorescence from pyrene units even under unfavorable conditions (aerated solutions of low concentration at room temperature). The understanding of the complex dynamics sustained by this single molecular architecture could approach the next generation of chemically accessible and low-cost materials enabling fluorescence by photon upconversion mediated by triplet-triplet annihilation.

[EN] The calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) controls most of the final properties of the cement paste, including its mechanical performance. It is agreed that the nanometer-sized building blocks that compose the C-S-H are the origin of the mechanical properties. In this work, we employ atomistic simulations to investigate the relaxation process of C-S-H nanoparticles subjected to shear stress. In particular, we study the stress relaxation by rearrangement of these nanoparticles via sliding adjacent C-S-H layers separated by a variable interfacial distance. The simulations show that the shear strength has its maximum at the bulk interlayer space, called perfect contact interface, and decreases sharply to low values for very short interfacial distances, coinciding with the transition from 2 to 3 water layers and beginning of the water flow. The evolution of the shear strength as a function of the temperature and ionic confinement confirms that the water diffusion controls the shear strength.

[EN] The C-S-H gel is an elusive material. Its variable composition and disordered nature complicate a complete characterization of its atomic structure, and the elaboration of models is key to understanding it. This work aims to review those proposed models, dividing them into empirical and computational models. After a brief description of related crystalline calcium silicate hydrates, empirical C-S-H models based on interpretation of experimental data are presented. Then, we focus on the historic development of atomistic models to study the C-S-H, until the current state of the art. We describe current computational C-S-H models built from the empirical models and computer simulations. We review common applications of these computational models: the aluminum incorporation, the elastic and mechanical properties, the diffusion of water and ions in nanopores, and C-S-H/organic composites. Finally, we discuss some practical aspects of the computational models and their interpretation, as well as possible future directions.

This paper aims to study the adhesion mechanism of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber within alkali-activated slag/fly ash (AASF) matrix using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation in combination with systematic experimental characterization. The adhesion of PVA to C-(N-)A-S-H gel with different Ca/(Si+Al) and Al/Si ratios was modeled using MD simulation, with the related adsorption enthalpy calculated and the adhesion mechanism explored. The experimentally attained chemical bonding energy of PVA fiber in AASF coincides well with the simulation results. In both cases, the adhesion enhances primarily with increasing Ca/(Si+Al) ratio of C-(N-)A-S-H gel. Additionally, MD simulation indicates preferential element distributions of Ca around PVA molecule, which was confirmed experimentally by the detection of the Ca-rich C-(N-)A-S-H gel in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). This study provides further insights into the adhesion mechanism of PVA fiber to C-(N-)A-S-H gel formed in AASF, which is particularly valuable for the future development of PVA-based high-performance alkali-activated composites.

To find materials with an appropriate response to THz radiation is key for the incoming THz technology revolution. Unfortunately, this region of the electromagnetic spectra remains largely unexplored in most materials. The present work aims at unveiling the most significant THz fingerprints of cement-based materials. To this end transmission experiments have been carried out over Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and geopolymer (GEO) binder cement pastes in combination with atomistic simulations. These simulations have calculated for the first time, the dielectric response of C-S-H and N-A-S-H gels, the most important hydration products of OPC and GEO cement pastes respectively. Interestingly both the experiments and simulations reveal that both varieties of cement pastes exhibit three main characteristic peaks at frequencies around ~0.6 THz, ~1.05 THz and ~1.35 THz, whose origin is governed by the complex dynamic of their water content, and two extra signals at ~1.95 THz and ~2.75 THz which are likely related to modes involving floppy parts of the dried skeleton.

246 p., In this thesis, atomistic simulations have been used to study and predict the properties of molecules and materials. The information provided by the molecular dynamics simulations complements and supports the experiments, helping in the interpretations of the results and serving as a guide for the design of new materials. First, the intercalation of two organic dyes, LDS-722 and pyronin Y, with two smectite clays, Laponite and saponite, has been studied. The simulation of these dye/clay systems has enable the understanding of their photophysical behavior, the dye aggregation and its diffusivity. The mechanical properties of these hybrid materials has also been characterized. Second, the retention of radiocesium in calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H gel) has been evaluated, considering the impact of Cs concentration, Ca/Si ratio, counterions and Al incorporation in the silicate chains to form C-A-S-H. Third, the strengthening mechanisms in C-S-H gel that incorporates organic additives, APTES and PEG, has also been explored by molecular dynamics simulations. The bulk and Young¿s moduli have been determined by applying a hydrostatic and uniaxial pressures to the simulated systems, considering the effects of the hydrostatic pressure on the silicate chains and hydrogen bond network. The results presented in this thesis contribute to a better understanding of the guest-host interactions at atomic scale in the studied systems and may help in the design of new materials.
