3. Analysis of MAV Rotors Optimized for Low Noise and Aerodynamic Efficiency with Operational Constraints.

Abstract

The rapid growth of drone use in urban areas has prompted authorities to review airspace regulations, forcing drone manufacturers to anticipate and reduce the noise emissions during the design stage. Additionally, micro air vehicles (MAVs) are designed to be aerodynamically efficient, allowing them to fly farther, longer and safer. In this study, a steady aerodynamic code and an acoustic propagator based on the non-linear vortex lattice method (NVLM) and Farassat's formulation-1A of the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic analogy, respectively, are coupled with pymoo, a python-based optimization framework. This tool is used to perform a multi-objective (noise and aerodynamic efficiency) optimization of a 20 cm diameter two-bladed rotor under hovering conditions. From the set of optimized results, (i.e., the Pareto front), three different rotors are 3D-printed using a stereolithography (SLA) technique and tested in an anechoic room. Here, an array of far-field microphones captures the acoustic radiation and directivity of the rotor, while a balance measures the aerodynamic performance. Both the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance of the three different rotors, in line with what has been predicted by the numerical codes, are compared and guidelines for the design of aerodynamically and aeroacoustically efficient MAV rotors are extracted. Abstract

The radiation characteristics of rotor-beam interaction noise are studied experimentally for low Reynolds number small-scale rotors in interaction with beams of different shapes, sizes, and downstream positions. The number of blades ranges from two to four. For the two-bladed rotor, the presence of the beam has no effect on the mean aerodynamic performance. Moreover, the blade passing frequency (BPF) and the high frequency broadband noise (BBN) appear not to be affected by the presence of the beam. On the contrary, the magnitude of the 2×BPF–25×BPF harmonics increases up to 30 dB compared to the case without beam, with an envelope consisting of two humps: one centered around 5×BPF and another around 20×BPF–25×BPF. For the first hump, a dipole-like pattern with minimal amplitude aligned with the beam can be observed, whereas another dipole-like pattern is observed for the higher frequency hump, but with a minimal amplitude over all the rotor disk plane. Compared to the two-bladed rotor, the presence of the beam has an effect on the mean aerodynamic performance of the three- and four-bladed rotors, increasing both the torque and the thrust at iso-rotational speed. This change leads to a change in the directivity of the BPF tone that decreases at a latitude angle of θ = 0 ° and increases at a latitude angle of θ = 40 °. Moreover, the same two competing humps are observed on the BPF harmonics envelope. Interestingly, the frequency range over which an amplification of the harmonic magnitude is observed seems not to be influenced by the number of blades. Finally, the magnitude of the low frequency hump increases with the beam diameter, the rotational speed, and the number of blades but decreases with the rotor-beam distance. That of the high frequency hump increases also with the rotational speed and the number of blades, but not anymore with the beam diameter, and reaches a maximum value when the rotor-beam distance is at an intermediate distance of L = 25 mm. This hump is also influenced, to a lesser extent, by the shape of the beam. The two different evolutions permit us to conclude that the noise generation mechanisms leading to the two humps must be different. Scaling laws of the acoustical energy are derived for all those parameters. Abstract

In this paper, a characterization of a low Reynolds number two-bladed rotor in interaction with a beam is performed using both an experimental campaign performed in an anechoic room and implicit large eddy simulations (iLES) associated with the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkins (F-WH) analogy. The rotor studied has a NACA0012 blade section profile extruded in the radial direction with a constant chord of 25 mm, a constant pitch of 10 and a diameter of 200 mm. This rotor is tested in interaction with 3 cylindrical beams of different diameters positioned at a distance of 20 mm below the rotor disk plane. The blade passing frequency (BPF) and the high frequency broadband noise appear to not be affected by the presence of the beam. On the contrary, the magnitude of the 2 BPF to 15 BPF harmonics increases up to 30 dB compared to the case without beam. For the dominant harmonics of the BPF, a dipole like pattern aligned with the beam can be observed. Numerical simulations were successfully validated against the experimental data for the dominant BPF harmonics and were then used to study the contribution of the rotor and the beam to the noise radiated. It is found that the beam is responsible for the increase in BPF harmonics and their characteristic directivity pattern.

Abstract

The present work outlines efforts at ISAE-SUPAERO to reduce the acoustic footprint of rotors operating at low Reynolds and low Mach numbers typical of small and medium scale drones. An experimental campaign that aims at characterizing rotor noise is presented. The latter serves as a basis for validation of numerical approaches and to investigate the noise mechanisms. Data are obtained in an anechoic room with dimensions (wedge tip to wedge tip) 5.02x5.24x5.34 m3 and cut-off frequency 80 Hz. Aerodynamic loads as well as acoustic fields are recorded for two off-the-shelf (APC 9x6 SF and 11x4.7 SF) and four canonical rotors with different numbers of blades. Both near and far acoustic fields are measured using one microphone located one diameter away from the rotor plane and 13 microphones mounted on a directivity antenna. A range of rotation speed from 1,000 to 10,000 RPM is addressed, corresponding to Mach and Reynolds numbers up to 0.23 and 130,000 respectively. Results presented in this article are related to two-bladed rotors and are validated using existing experimental data from the literature. They are then used to assess in-house numerical simulations (NL-VLM and CFD) and unravel the physics behind rotor noise at low Reynolds and low Mach numbers. This fundamental understanding will help draw general guidelines for the design of low noise rotors.

Abstract

L’ Holographie acoustique de champ proche (NAH) est une méthode d’imagerie acoustique robuste, mais son application en écoulement peut être limitée par l’utilisation de mesures intrusives de pression ou de vitesse acoustique. Dans cette étude, une procédure holographique applicable en écoulement utilisant des mesures de vitesse non-intrusives est proposée. Cette méthode est basée sur le théorème intégral de Kirchhoff-Helmholtz convecté. La fonction de Green convectée est alors utilisée pour déterminer des propagateurs spatiaux convectés définis dans l’espace réel et incluant l’effet d’un écoulement subsonique uniforme. Les transformées de Fourier discrètes de ces propagateurs permettent alors d’évaluer les champs acoustiques à partir de la mesure du champ de pression ou de vitesse acoustique normale. Le but étant de développer une méthode de caractérisation de sources aéroacoustiques à partir de mesures de vitesse non-intrusives, cette étude se concentre essentiellement sur les propagateurs réels convectés basés sur la mesure de vitesse acoustique. Afin de valider cette procédure, des simulations ont été menées dans le cas de combinaisons de sources monopolaires et dipolaires convectées corrélées ou non. La procédure holographique développée donne de bons résultats par comparaison aux champs acoustiques théoriques. Une comparaison des résultats obtenus par les propagateurs convectés réels, développés dans cette thèse, avec ceux obtenus par leurs formes spectrales, développés par Kwon et al. fin 2010 pour des mesures de pression acoustique, montre l’intérêt d’utiliser la forme réelle pour la reconstruction de la pression acoustique à partir de la mesure de vitesse acoustique normale. L’efficacité de la procédure développée est confirmée par une campagne de mesure en soufflerie avec un haut-parleur affleurant rayonnant au sein d’un écoulement à Mach 0.22, et des mesures non-intrusives effectuées par Vélocimétrie Laser Doppler (LDV). Les champs de vitesse acoustique utilisés pour la procédure holographique sont dans ce cas extraits des mesures LDV par corrélation avec un microphone de référence. La faisabilité de prendre en compte des variations de l’écoulement dans la direction de reconstruction holographique est également vérifiée. Nearfield Acoustic Holography (NAH) is a powerful acoustic imaging method but its application in flow can be limited by intrusive measurements of acoustic pressure or velocity. In this work, a moving fluid medium NAH procedure using non-intrusive velocity measurements is proposed. This method is based on the convective Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral formula. The convective Green’s function is then used to derive convective realspace propagators including uniform subsonic airflow effects. Discrete Fourier transforms of these propagators allow then the assessment of acoustic fields from acoustic pressure or normal acoustic velocity measurements. As the aim is to derive an aeroacoustic sources characterisation method from non-inrusive velocity measurements, this study is especially focused on real convective velocity-based propagators. In order to validate this procedure, simulations in the case of combinations of monopolar and dipolar sources correlated or not, radiating in various uniform subsonic flows, have been performed. NAH provides very favorable results when compared to the theoretical fields. A comparison of results obtained by real convective propagators, developed in this work, and those obtained by the spectral ones, developed by Kwon et al. at the end of 2010 for acoustic pressure measurements, shows the interest of using the real-form for NAH acoustic pressure reconstruction from normal acoustic velocity measurements. The efficiency of the developed procedure is confirmed by a wind tunnel campaign with a flush-mounted loudspeaker radiating in a flow at Mach 0.22 and non-intrusive Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) measurements. Acoustic velocity fields used for the NAH procedure are in this case extracted from LDV measurements by correlation with a reference microphone. The feasibility of taking into account mean flow variations in the direction of NAH reconstruction is also checked.

Abstract

International audience; The Aquitanian coast (France) is representative of sandy coastal environments with long linear beaches boarding a large continental shelf and interrupted by the Gironde estuary and the Arca-chon inlet. It is a mixed-energy environment with meso-tidal and long swell influences. In order to monitor the hydro and morphodynamics of this environment, several techniques including optical and radar remote sensing are used. Firstly, SPOT optical images are used to analyse rhythmic sub-tidal and inter-tidal bar morphology and dynamics. The method is based on the semi-empirical inversion of shallow water reflectance in terms of bathymetry. The results obtained at medium spatial scale based on a set of about 20 images are summarised: the bar morphology, their time of response and preliminary analysis of physical forcing based on waverider recording. Secondly, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is used for different dynamic aspects mainly for inlets. The PYLA 2001 campaign allowed the deployment of the polarimetric RAMSES P-band SAR (with a frequency of 448 MHz), developed by ONERA. The oceanic part of this campaign aimed both to study the capability of observing ocean surface salinity variability in the Gironde estuary and to obtain the surface currents in the Arcachon inlet. In this study, we focus on the ability of the radar images to retrieve surface currents in the Arcachon Inlet as compared with results of a two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic model forced by tidal effects.

Abstract

The Fetch experiment took place in March-April 1998 in the Golfe du Lion (Mediterranean sea) and was carried out by French and international scientists. Its objectives were to study the exchanges at the air-sea interface, oceanic circulation on the medium scale and the improvement in the use of remote-sensing to estimate wind, waves and fluxes at the sea surface. The special conditions to be found in the experimental area (strong local winds like the Mistral and Tramontane, the presence of the Liguro-Provençal current andsmall extent of the continental shelf) had to be taken into account when the detailed objectives and the strategy were defined. In this paper we summarize the objectives of the experiment, means used and give preliminary results.; La campagne Fetch s'est déroulée en mars et en avril 1998 dans le golfe du Lion en Méditerranée. Elle a réuni des chercheurs de la communauté française et internationale. Elle avait pour objectifs d'étudier les échanges entre l'océan et l'atmosphère, la circulation océanique à moyenne échelle et d'améliorer l'apport de la télédétection pour l'estimation du vent, des vagues et des flux à la surface de l'océan. La particularité des conditions du golfe du Lion (vents régionaux intenses comme le mistral et la tramontane, courant liguro-provençal, faible étendue du plateau continental) a été prise en compte pour définir les objectifs détaillés de la campagne et la stratégie de mesure associée. Cet article rappelle les objectifs de l'expérience et présente les moyens mis en oeuvre ainsi que les premiers résultats obtenus.

Abstract

The transfer coefficients for momentum and heat have been determined for 10 m neutral wind speeds (U-10n) between 0 and 12 m/s using data from the Surface of the Ocean, Fluxes and Interactions with the Atmosphere (SOFIA) and Structure des Echanges Mer-Atmosphere, Proprietes des Heterogeneites Oceaniques: Recherche Experimentale (SEMAPHORE) experiments. The inertial dissipation method was applied to wind and pseudo virtual temperature spectra from a sonic anemometer, mounted on a platform (ship) which was moving through the turbulence held. Under unstable conditions the assumptions concerning the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) budget appeared incorrect. Using a bulk estimate for the stability parameter, Z/L (where Z is the height and L is the Obukhov length), this resulted in anomalously low drag coefficients compared to neutral conditions. Determining Z/L iteratively, a low rate of convergence was achieved. It was concluded that the divergence of the turbulent transport of TKE was not negligible under unstable conditions. By minimizing the dependence of the calculated neutral drag coefficient on stability, this term was estimated at about -0.65Z/L. The resulting turbulent fluxes were then in close agreement with other studies at moderate wind speed. The drag and exchange coefficients for low wind speeds were found to be C-en x 10(3) = 2.79U(10n)(-1) + 0.66 (U-10n < 5.2 m/s), C-en x 10(3) = C-hn x 10(3) = 1.2 (U-10n greater than or equal to 5.2 m/s), and C-dn x 10(3) = 11.7U(10n)(-2) + 0.668 (U-10n < 5.5 m/s), which imply a rapid increase of the coefficient values as the wind decreased within the smooth flow regime. The frozen turbulence hypothesis and the assumptions of isotropy and an inertial subrange were found to remain valid at these low wind speeds for these shipboard measurements. Incorporation of a free convection parameterization had little effect.
