There are gaps in our understanding of sturgeon's response to anthropogenic sounds and the spatial scales at which they occur. We measured spatial displacement of Atlantic sturgeon in the St. Lawrence River at various distances of approaching merchant ships. This fish population is designated as “threatened,” although anthropogenic noise is not currently considered a direct threat. For several years, Atlantic sturgeon migrations have been monitored by the Quebec government using acoustic transmitters and a network of telemetry receivers in the St. Lawrence River. We combined fish telemetry data with merchant ship positions to detect co‐occurrences between Atlantic sturgeons that remained in the vicinity of the receivers and approaching ships. Numerical simulations reveal that the probability of masking of transmitters (69 kHz) by ship noise was infinitesimal and that the disappearance of the transmitter signal was related to fish movement. When the ships approached, a significant spatial displacement was detected with ships at distances between 0.5 and 5 km from the receivers. After emitter signal loss, over 61% of sturgeons took at least 30 min to be detected again or did not return at all in the vicinity of the receivers. Furthermore, the median time to redetection after a ship transit was longer than when no ship was approaching (31 vs. 18 min). Our results show that sturgeons alter their position due to approaching ships at greater trigger distances than previously documented, which are too far away to be attributed to visual cues alone. We also found that the long‐distance propagation of low‐frequency sounds from large ships through water should not be heard by Atlantic sturgeon at distances of 1 km and longer based on current knowledge of sturgeons hearing. These results suggest that behavioral responses in Atlantic sturgeons are modulated not only by visual cues but can also be triggered by underwater sounds at relatively long distances, although the precise mechanism is still unknown. Restoration is moving towards a more mechanistic approach that emphasizes restoration of ecosystem services. Trait-based approaches provide links between species identity and ecosystem functions and have been suggested as a promising way to formally integrate ecosystem services in the design of restoration programs. While practitioners have been routinely using informal knowledge on plant traits in their practices, these approaches are underutilized as operationalization remains challenging. The goal of this paper is to provide guidance for applied scientists and restoration practitioners looking to apply a trait-based approach to restore forest ecosystems. We present a five-step framework: (1) selection of services to be restored, (2) trait selection, (3) data acquisition, (4) analytical planning, and (5) empirical testing and monitoring. We use three Canadian case studies to illustrate the applicability of our framework and the variety of ways trait-based approaches can inform restoration practices: (1) restoration of urban woodlots after an insect outbreak, (2) restoration of a smelter-damaged landscape surrounding an urban area, and (3) reclamation of remote upland forests after oil- and gas-related disturbances. We describe the major mechanisms and traits that determine vegetation effects on ecosystem services of importance in each case study. We then discuss data availability, methodological constraints, comparability issues, analytical methods, and the importance of empirical testing and monitoring to ensure realistic prediction of service restoration. Interindividual variability in habitat preferences affect local abundance and residency times. Within a population range, this can lead to sectors having a continuous flow of unique individuals, with others being used by the same set of resident individuals. These patterns of habitat use by individuals, referred to here as individual spatial mixing, can have important implications for ecological and evolutionary processes. This study proposes a novel approach for estimating the degree of individual spatial mixing in an endangered beluga population, based on the comparison of local individual diversity obtained from photo‐identification data against abundance indices derived from systematic aerial surveys. Divergences between long‐term indices of abundance and diversity were observed across many sectors within the population's summer habitat. This was the case notably for the Saguenay Fjord, where on average only 1.8% of the total population count was detected during summer aerial surveys, but where 41% of all individuals identified in the photo‐identification data were found at least once. The comparative approach proposed in this study to estimate individual spatial mixing can help quantify site fidelity patterns in wildlife populations and estimate its vulnerability to local stressors such as anthropogenic noise.
