17. Growth of nonlinear intermittent fluctuations in linearly stable and unstable simulation plasma.

Abstract

Simulations of nonlinear instability in a one-dimensional Vlasov plasma with a relative electron-ion drift velocity have been extended to parameter ranges more extensive than previously reported [Phys. Fluids 28, 155 (1985)]. Linearly stable runs, with Te/Ti =1, mi/me =100, and a system length of L=512λD show nonlinear hole instability. As in the case of mi/me =4, and L=32λD, the hole depth, double-layer potential structure, acceleration, and growth rate agree well with a theory of hole growth that results from momentum exchange from reflected particles. For a linearly unstable plasma (Te/Ti >1), the fluctuations and their time evolution are related to the linearly stable case, but are somewhat more complex. A spatially intermittent distribution of ‘‘wavelike fluctuations’’ grows to large amplitude and then evolve into trapped ion phase-space hole structures. The hole potentials are of order e[lowercase_phi_synonym]/Te =1, as in the linearly stable (Te/Ti =1) runs, but because Te/Ti >1, are of large amplitude (e[lowercase_phi_synonym]/Ti >1) relative to the ions. The hole structure and dynamics agree well with the large-amplitude extension of the small e[lowercase_phi_synonym]/Ti hole theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Previous calculations of hole growth in a one-dimensional electron-ion plasma are extended to a greater range of parameter space including the region around linear instability. The effect of the ion-acoustic resonance on hole growth is analyzed and the relationship to linear instability is discussed. Agreement with computer simulations is much improved. Abstract

Earlier work [Phys. Fluids 25, 277 ( 1982); Phys. Fluids 26, 2460 (1983) ] on the structure and growth of phase space density holes for ψ = - q[sub i] φ/T[sub i] < 1 is extended to ψ > 1. As in the ψ < 1 case, it is found that reflecting electrons cause the ion holes to decelerate and grow, although the details are quite different. The reflected electrons cause the formation of a so-called "double layer." It is shown that isolated (intermittent) ion holes or wave packets can grow to much larger amplitudes than that predicted by the conventional quasilinear plateau limitation or Manheimer's [Phys. 20. Simulation of phase space hole growth and the development of intermittent plasma turbulence.

Abstract

An unstable, highly intermittent state of turbulence is observed to evolve from a quiescent homogeneous plasma that is linearly stable. This intermittent state, which consists of isolated phase space density holes, produces a pronounced non-Gaussian distribution of fluctuation amplitudes. The skewness becomes increasingly more negative with time. The plasma is nonlinearly unstable because the holes grow in amplitude by accelerating to regions of higher average phase space density. The instability can be interpreted as a collection of colliding, growing holes and, in its early stages, is consistent with theoretical predictions for the clump instability. A series of runs with a single isolated hole indicates that an isolated hole grows for any finite electron-ion drift velocity. The isolated hole growth rate is consistent with theoretical predictions. The implications of the instability to laboratory and space plasma are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

An exact kinetic equation for plasma and the electromagnetic field is derived. This equation describes the fluctuations of the fields and particle distributions. The solution is obtained by expanding in a parameter which characterizes the amplitude of these fluctuations. A systematic procedure is given for generating the solution to arbitary order in the expansion. Some typical applications of the theory are presented. These include calculations of a collision integral, incoherent scattering, and bremsstrahlung emission and absorption. (Author)
