Abstract

This letter presents a new approach using the cosmic peculiar velocity field to characterize the morphology and size of large scale structures in the local Universe. The algorithm developed uses the three-dimensional peculiar velocity field to compute flow lines, or streamlines. The local Universe is then partitioned into volumes corresponding to gravitational basins, also called watersheds, among the different end-points of the velocity flow lines. This new methodology is first tested on numerical cosmological simulations, used as benchmark for the method, and then applied to the {\it Cosmic-Flows} project observational data in order to to pay particular attention to the nearby superclusters including ours. Nous signalons pour la première fois en France la présence d'une espèce de Nématode du genre Anguillicola, A. crassa, rencontrée chez deux populations naturelles d'anguilles, en Camargue (Sud de la France) ; des compléments sont apportés à la description originale de l'espèce. Une prévalence de 96% a été notée à l'étang du Grand Palun. La question de la propagation et de la pathogénicité de ce Nématode, parasite de la vessie gazeuse, est abordée.

10. Influence of Nd on the magnetic properties of Nd1-xCaxMnO3

Abstract

The role played by the Nd ions in the magnetic properties of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and Nd0.7Ca0.3MnO3 is studied using static magnetization, neutron diffraction and high frequency (9.4-475GHz) Electron Spin Resonance. We show that the Nd ions are weakly coupled to the Mn ions via ferromagnetic exchange and are responsible for the peculiar ferromagnetic resonance observed in the FM phase of both compounds (ground state below 120K for x=0.3, high field state for x=0.5). We then use ESR to look for magnetic phase separation in the low field, CO phase of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3. We show that there is no trace of the FM phase imbedded in the CO phase, contrary to what is observed in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 or Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3., Comment: to be published in phys.Rev.B as a Rapid Comm

Abstract

International audience; Background The identification of patients at high risk of a disabling disease course would be invaluable in guiding initial therapy in Crohn’s disease (CD). Our objective was to evaluate a combination of clinical, serological, and genetic factors to predict complicated disease course in pediatric-onset CD. Methods Data for pediatric-onset CD patients, diagnosed before 17 years of age between 1988 and 2004 and followed more than 5 years, were extracted from the population-based EPIMAD registry. The main outcome was defined by the occurrence of complicated behavior (stricturing or penetrating) and/or intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. Lasso logistic regression models were used to build a predictive model based on clinical data at diagnosis, serological data (ASCA, pANCA, anti-OmpC, anti-Cbir1, anti-Fla2, anti-Flax), and 369 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms. Results In total, 156 children with an inflammatory (B1) disease at diagnosis were included. Among them, 35% (n = 54) progressed to a complicated behavior or an intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. The best predictive model (PREDICT-EPIMAD) included the location at diagnosis, pANCA, and 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms. This model showed good discrimination and good calibration, with an area under the curve of 0.80 after correction for optimism bias (sensitivity, 79%, specificity, 74%, positive predictive value, 61%, negative predictive value, 87%). Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the model. Conclusions A combination of clinical, serotypic, and genotypic variables can predict disease progression in this population-based pediatric-onset CD cohort. Independent validation is needed before it can be used in clinical practice.

16. First steps of learning analytics in a blended learning general practice curriculum at Saarland University - a quantitative approach

Objectives: Medical education has been revolutionized by the growing importance of digital learning. Little is known about students' online study behaviour and its relationship with exam performance. This quantitative study analyses and describes students' digital learning behaviours in a blended learning curriculum for General practice at Saarland University, Germany. It also examines the relationship between digital learning behaviour and exam performance.Methods: Cohort and individualized AMBOSS® user data from 195 students at Saarland University was analysed quantitatively. Performance in course-specific multiple-choice question sessions and user data of the integrated online learning activities were correlated with each other and with General practice exam grades. Anonymized data from 10,534 students from 35 other German universities served as the reference cohort. Differences in digital learning behaviour between the groups were calculated using Mann-Whitney-U-Test for non-normally distributed data.Results: Students in the blended learning course used integrated content more frequently than the reference cohort (U=48777, p<0.001). The number of digital learning cards read correlated moderately with digital formative assessment performance (rho=0.331, p=0.005 and rho=0.217, p=0.034). Formative assessment scores and exam results correlated strongly in the summer semester cohort (rho=0.505, p<0.001), and moderately in the winter semester cohort (rho=0.381, p<0.001). Conclusion: There is a difference in the usage of online learning activities when they are purposefully integrated into a curriculum. Digital learning activities including formative assessment may serve as valuable, constructively aligned exam preparation. This is relevant for medical educators when planning future blended learning curricula and portfolio systems, as it may save financial and human resources., Hintergrund: Die medizinische Ausbildung wurde durch die wachsende Bedeutung des digitalen Lernens revolutioniert. Über das Online-Lernverhalten der Studierenden und dessen Zusammenhang mit den Studienleistungen ist wenig bekannt. Diese quantitative Studie analysiert und beschreibt das digitale Lernverhalten der Studierenden in einem Blended-Learning-Curriculum für Allgemeinmedizin an der Universität des Saarlandes, Deutschland. 40. Effect of Fentanyl Infusion on Heart Rate Variability and Anaesthetic Requirements in Isoflurane-Anaesthetized Horses

Abstract

Controversy continues to surround the use of opioids in equine anaesthesia, with variable effects reported. This blinded clinical study aimed to investigate the influence of a low-dose fentanyl continuous rate infusion (CRI) on isoflurane requirements, parasympathetic tone activity (PTA), and anaesthetic parameters in horses during general anaesthesia. All of the twenty-two horses included in the research underwent a standard anaesthetic protocol. Eleven horses in the fentanyl group(Group F) received a loading dose of fentanyl at 6 μg/kg, followed by a CRI of 0.1 μg/kg/min during anaesthesia. A further 11 horses in the control group (Group C) received equivalent volumes of normal saline. Anaesthetic parameters and PTA index were recorded during anaesthesia. The achieved mean fentanyl plasma concentration was 6.2 ±0.83 ng/mL. No statistically significant differences between groups were found in isoflurane requirements, MAP values, and mean dobutamine requirements. However, horses in Group F required a significantly lower dose of additional ketamine to maintain a sufficient depth of anaesthesia. Significantly higher PTA values were foundin the fentanyl group. Further research is warranted to determine the limitations of PTA monitoring, and the influence of various anaesthetics on its values.

44. Low-cost microfluidic device micromachining and sequential integration with SAW sensor intended for biomedical applications

Abstract

The paper reports on fabrication processes related to low-cost manufacturing and integration of microfluidic biomedical detection systems fabricated without a cleanroom. First, we developed and demonstrated a process for manufacturing a microfluidic device. Second, we demonstrated a low temperature assembly technique for the packaging of the surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor die. Sequentially, we demonstrated a low temperature process for the integration of the microfluidic device with a SAW sensor to form a fully functional biomedical detection system. The microfluidic device was manufactured by mechanical micromilling technology that is rapid, conceptually simple and a low-cost process. It is suitable for both prototyping and for a low and a medium scale production to address a niche market that is typical for the intended application. That technology has no specific requirement for a certified clean room environment. Unlikely other technology, such as molding and photolithography, for example, it has a shorter lead-time from design to manufacturing. The assembly technique for a SAW sensor is a carefully selected combination of known and matured processing steps causing no damage to a sensitive biofunctionalization on the sensor. The developed and demonstrated integration process for the in-house manufactured microfluidic device and the SAW sensor is a purely low temperature process that prevents a biological material deposited on the SAW sensor from degradation. Biocompatibility issues were also addressed during the study reported. Finally, we performed an ultrasonic (US) impedance characterization of the fully assembled system and demonstrated that neither the microfluidic system integrated on the sensor nor the integration process itself have an impact on the US impedance of the SAW sensor. That means that it does not affect the sensor performance.

Abstract

The isothermal flow in a model channel of plate-fin heat exchanger with periodically arranged embossed-like vortex generators is investigated. Velocity measurements are performed by LDA in the transitional regime (Reynolds number from 1000 up to 5000). Strong longitudinal vortices are observed downstream of each generator. The vortex rollup process is highlighted by the evolution of the velocity vector field in the cross section of the flow. The modifications of the vortex characteristics after successively encountered generators are investigated. This work shows most of the flow features which are known to produce heat transfer enhancement, and shows that these smooth shaped vortex generators are very promising for enhanced heat exchangers.
