Microbial network complexity is an important indicator for assessing the effectiveness of vegetation restoration. However, the response of the microbial network complexity of bacteria and fungi to different vegetation restoration types is unclear. Therefore, in this study, we selected four vegetation restoration types (Pinus sylvestris var. mongholica, Larix principis- rupprechtii, Populus tomentosa, and Ulmus pumila), while selected the nature grassland as a control, in the Zhangjiakou Tunken Forest Farm, which is a typical agricultural pastoral ecotone in northern China, to investigate the response of soil microbial diversity and network complexity to different vegetation restoration types. Our result showed that the bacterial Shannon and Chao indices of P. sylvestris var. mongholica were significantly 7.77 and 22.39% higher than those of grassland in the 20–40 cm soil layer, respectively. The fungal Chao indices of U. pumila were significantly 85.70 and 146.86% higher than those of grassland in the 20–40 cm and 40–60 cm soil layer, respectively. Compared to natural grassland, soil microbial networks became more complex in plantation forests restoration types (P. sylvestris var. mongholica, L. principis- rupprechtii, P. tomentosa, and U. pumila). Microbial network complexity increased with soil carbon and nitrogen. P. tomentosa is suitable for planting in the agricultural pastoral ecotone of Zhangjiakou, because of its high soil carbon, nitrogen and microbial network complexity. Bacterial community composition was found to be closely related to soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), while that of fungi was closely related to SOC, clay and silt content. This improvement in microbial complexity enhances the ecological service function of the agricultural pastoral ecotone. These findings offer theoretical basis and technical support for the vegetation restoration of ecologically fragile areas in agricultural pastoral ecotone.

Abstract Climate change affects the geographical distribution of species. Predicting the future potential areas suitable for certain species is of great significance for understanding their distribution characteristics and exerting their value. Based on the data of 276 effective distribution points of Polygonum capitatum and 20 ecological factors, the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model and the ArcGIS software were employed to predict the areas suitable for P. capitatum growth, and the main environmental factors affecting the geographical distribution of this species were explored. Under the current climatic conditions, the areas highly suitable for P. capitatum are mainly distributed in southwestern China, with a small number of sites in coastal areas and most sites in Guizhou Province. Under different climate scenarios, the suitable areas were reduced to varying degrees. The dominant environmental variables affecting the distribution of P. capitatum were precipitation in the driest month, annual precipitation, and elevation, with a cumulative contribution rate of 84.1%. Against the background of a changing climate, the areas suitable for P. capitatum in China will be widely distributed in the southwestern region, with Guizhou Province and Yunnan Province as the main distribution areas; some sites will also be distributed throughout the southwest of Tibet Autonomous Region, the south of Sichuan Province, the north of Guangxi Autonomous Region, and the coastal area of Fujian Province. Optimal conditions for P. capitatum include a dry month precipitation range of 13.4 to 207.3 mm, elevations from 460.3 to 7214.3 m, and annual precipitation between 810 and 1575 mm. Given these insights, we recommend enhanced conservation efforts in current prime habitats and exploring potential cultivation in newly identified suitable regions to ensure the species’ preservation and sustainable use.

South Asia, one of the most important food producing regions in the world, is facing a significant threat to food grain production under the influence of extreme high temperatures. Furthermore, the probability of simultaneous trends in extreme precipitation patterns and extreme heat conditions, which can have compounding effects on crops, is a likelihood in South Asia. In this study, we found complex relationships between extreme heat and precipitation patterns, as well as compound effects on major crops (rice and wheat) in South Asia. We also employed event coincidence analysis (ECA) to quantify the likelihood of simultaneous temperature and crop extremes. We used the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) as the primary data to evaluate the distinct responses of major crops to weather extremes. Our results suggest that while the probability of simultaneous extreme events is small, most regions of South Asia (more than half) have experienced extreme events. The regulatory effect of precipitation on heat stress is very unevenly distributed in South Asia. The harm caused by a wet year at high temperature is far greater than that during a dry year, although the probability of a dry year is greater than that of a wet year. For the growing seasons, the highest significant event coincidence rates at a low EVI were found for both high- and low-temperature extremes. The regions that responded positively to EVI at extreme temperatures were mainly concentrated in irrigated farmland, and the regions that responded negatively to EVI at extreme temperatures were mostly in the mountains and other high-altitude regions. Implications can guide crop adaptation interventions in response to these climate influences.
