This study introduces a highly efficient and straightforward method for synthesizing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) within a glucosamine/alginate (GluN/Alg) nanocomposite via an ionotropic gelation mechanism in aqueous environment. The resulting nanocomposite, AuNPs@GluN/Alg, underwent thorough characterization using UV–vis, EDX, FTIR, SEM, TEM, SAED, and XRD analyses. The spherical AuNPs exhibited uniform size with an average diameter of 10.0 nm. The nanocomposites facilitated the recyclable reduction of organic dyes, including 2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, and methyl orange, employing NaBH4 as the reducing agent. Kinetic studies further underscored the potential of this nanocomposite as a versatile catalyst with promising applications across various industrial sectors.

Organized chronic subdural hematoma is a rare form of chronic subdural hematoma. The optimal treatment method is still controversial. Preoperative middle meningeal artery embolization and craniotomy are effective methods for chronic subdural hematoma. However, there are not many reports investigating the effectiveness of these methods in treating organized chronic subdural hematoma. We report the case of a 61-year-old male patient who had a twist-drill craniostomy to treat a left hemisphere subdural hematoma. After surgery, there was a recurrence on the same side in the form of an organized subdural hematoma. The patient received preoperative left middle meningeal artery embolization. After 3 months of follow-up, a small portion of the hematoma remained, causing pressure and slightly shifting the midline to the right by 6.5 mm, and the patient no longer had clinical symptoms.

The liver is commonly injured after blunt abdominal trauma. The choice of treatment for liver trauma depends not only on injury severity but also on the patient’s hemodynamic status. Most minor- and moderate-grade liver injuries in hemodynamically stable patients allow for conservative treatment or minimal intervention, while emergency laparotomy is indicated for patients with severe-grade liver trauma and hypotensive shock. We describe a 19-year-old male patient with traumatic shock due to grade IV liver injury and multiple fractures. An emergency laparotomy was performed, but the bleeding could not be controlled, and the patient remained hemodynamically unstable. Hyperacute transarterial embolization was successfully performed. In this case report, we emphasize the importance of transarterial embolization in cases of residual bleeding after initial damage-control surgery, even in hemodynamically unstable patients.

Abstract Objective. Globally, previous research has shown the negative influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health. In fact, Vietnamese culture emphasizes traditional values, and family relationships have an important influence on well-being. However, fewer studies have examined the correlation between family relationships and mental health problems in crises. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the correlation between family relationships and mental health problems among adults during the COVID-19 lockdown in Vietnam. Material and methods. A sample of 640 adults aged from 18 to 52 (71.9% female) completed an online survey on mental health from August to September 2021. The survey measured depression, anxiety, stress, family relationships, and socio-demographic and epidemiological factors. Multiple linear regressions were conducted. Results. Prevalence rates of depression, anxiety, and stress were 31.4%, 43.4%, and 25.2%, respectively. Multiple linear regression indicates that 12% to 14% of the variations in common mental health problems can be explained by the family relationship. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the note-taking method on the listening performance of second-year English language teacher education students and their feedbacks. The experimental study was conducted with a class of forty-four second-year students majoring in English language teacher education at Vinh University. The participants were divided into a pilot group and a control group. A mixed-method intervention design was applied, in which data were collected from pre-test, post-test, and semi-structured interviews. The results of statistical analysis, topic analysis, and comparison of data sets from tools showed that second-year English language teacher education students using the note-taking method performed better than those in the control group. More specifically, students in the experimental group made significant progress after applying the note-taking method. Most of the feedback was positive on the use of the note-taking method. Although research results are limited due to speaking speed and many other factors, the note-taking method should be used in teaching listening skills to English language teacher education students with some suggested notes

Contamination by heavy metals in coastal and marine environments is an increasingly serious threat to both marine ecosystems and humans. The numerous marine cultivation and industrial zones along the coast of Khanh Hoa may influence the heavy metal contamination in the seawater and marine sediments. In this study, 36 seawater and 36 marine sediment samples were collected along the coast of Khanh Hoa to evaluate the levels of eight heavy metal elements. The results indicated that heavy metal concentrations in the surface seawater at Khanh Hoa were much lower than the national technical regulatory limits. The comprehensive pollution index of the heavy metals averaged less than 1. Therefore, heavy metal pollution in the seawater along the coast of Khanh Hoa is slight. Among the eight heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) analyzed in the sediments, Cu concentration in the sediment at Cam Ranh Bay is much higher than the national technical regulatory limit. Ecological risk assessment of the sediments also indicated a possible combined biological effect of Cu, Pb, and Zn at Cam Ranh. Therefore, heavy metals in the marine environment at Khanh Hoa should be monitored yearly. Decision-makers should consider the Cu content in seafood because bioaccumulation of heavy metals may occur in marine organisms.

This study aimed to investigate the application of label propagation techniques to propagate labels among photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals, particularly in imbalanced class scenarios and limited data availability scenarios, where clean PPG samples are significantly outnumbered by artifact-contaminated samples. We investigated a dataset comprising PPG recordings from 1571 patients, wherein approximately 82% of the samples were identified as clean, while the remaining 18% were contaminated by artifacts. Our research compares the performance of supervised classifiers, such as conventional classifiers and neural networks (Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Transformers, Fully Convolutional Network (FCN)), with the semi-supervised Label Propagation (LP) algorithm for artifact classification in PPG signals. The results indicate that the LP algorithm achieves a precision of 91%, a recall of 90%, and an F1 score of 90% for the “artifacts” class, showcasing its effectiveness in annotating a medical dataset, even in cases where clean samples are rare. Although the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) supervised model demonstrated good results with a precision of 89%, a recall of 95%, and an F1 score of 92%, the semi-supervised algorithm excels in artifact detection. In the case of imbalanced and limited pediatric intensive care environment data, the semi-supervised LP algorithm is promising for artifact detection in PPG signals. The results of this study are important for improving the accuracy of PPG-based health monitoring, particularly in situations in which motion artifacts pose challenges to data interpretation.

A gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most common mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. The tumor originates from Cajal cells, which generated peristaltic motion. Primary gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the liver is rare and should be considered in imaging diagnosis. We report a case of an 82-year-old female patient who represented with upper abdominal pain and poor appetite. Magnetic resonance imaging detected a large left lobe cystic lesion (10 × 15 cm). The tumor was resected. The histopathological and immunohistochemical results were of a primary gastrointestinal stromal tumor in the liver with cystic changes. On imaging, it is difficult to differentiate from other cystic lesions.

Abstract We investigate possible effects of unparticles at the MUonE experiment by considering a general model for unparticle with broken scale invariance, characterized by the scaling dimension d and the energy scale $$\mu $$ μ at which the scale invariance is broken. Taking into account available relevant constraints on the couplings of the unparticles with the Standard Model (SM) leptons, we found that the MUonE experiment at the level of 10 ppm systematic accuracy is sensitive to such effects if $$1

Abstract Background This research investigated the determinants of the number of family planning consumers in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda, with a focus on outlet’s and provider’s characteristics which are important factors influencing the choice of using contraceptive methods but largely unexplored in previous literature. Methods We utilized a unique panel survey on outlet’s in Kenya (n = 1,321), Nigeria (n = 1,255) and Uganda (n = 842), which is part of the Consumer Market for Family Planning conducted in between 2019 and 2020, for the analysis of the pooled data (n = 3,418) and individual country. Random effects Poisson regressions were performed. Results The pooled data results showed that the expected number of consumers were significantly lower in Nigeria and Uganda than in Kenya, and that working experience (provider’s characteristics), types of stores, duration of providing family planning services, participations in community outreach and host community events, and sign of family planning services (outlet’s characteristics) were significant determinants of the number of customers. The results for each country revealed interesting similarities and differences in the determinants across the three countries. Conclusions This study sheds light on the relationship between the number of family planning customers and outlet’s and provider’s characteristics, thus providing informative evidence-based to on-going debates on the coverage of family planning services, which is still insufficient in developing countries. As a result, the government’s family planning expenditures should instead prioritize small, private enterprises such as pharmacies or drug stores. Furthermore, it is critical to focus on several critical tasks to improve the qualities of outlets and providers to attract customers, such as ensuring that they are eye-catching, advertising FP services, have professional credentials, fulfil providers’ obligations to counsel contraceptive users, provide long-term services and community care, and have female providers.

Abstract Drug repurposing is an important strategy in COVID-19 treatment, but many clinically approved compounds have not been extensively studied in the context of embryogenesis, thus limiting their administration during pregnancy. Here we used the zebrafish embryo model organism to test the effects of 162 marketed drugs on cardiovascular development. Among the compounds used in the clinic for COVD-19 treatment, we found that Remdesivir led to reduced body size and heart functionality at clinically relevant doses. Ritonavir and Baricitinib showed reduced heart functionality and Molnupiravir and Baricitinib showed effects on embryo activity. Sabizabulin was highly toxic at concentrations only 5 times higher than Cmax and led to a mean mortality of 20% at Cmax. Furthermore, we tested if zebrafish could be used as a model to study inflammatory response in response to spike protein treatment and found that Remdesivir, Ritonavir, Molnupiravir, Baricitinib as well as Sabizabulin counteracted the inflammatory response related gene expression upon SARS-CoV-2 spike protein treatment. Our results show that the zebrafish allows to study immune-modulating properties of COVID-19 compounds and highlights the need to rule out secondary defects of compound treatment on embryogenesis. We present the in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) through ionotropic gelation utilizing the biodegradable saccharides lactose (Lac) and alginate (Alg). The lactose reduced silver ions to form AgNPs. The crystallite structure of the nanocomposite AgNPs@Lac/Alg, with a mean size of 4–6 nm, was confirmed by analytical techniques. The nanocomposite exhibited high catalytic performance in degrading the pollutants methyl orange and rhodamine B. The antibacterial activity of the nanocomposite is pH-dependent, related to the alterations in surface properties of the nanocomposite at different pH values. At pH 6, the nanocomposite demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity. These findings suggest that this nanocomposite has the potential to be tailored for specific applications in environmental and medicinal treatments, making it a highly promising material.

Obesity, characterized by excessive adipose tissue accumulation, has emerged as a crucial determinant for a wide range of chronic medical conditions. The identification of effective interventions for obesity is of utmost importance. Widely researched antiobesity agents focus on pancreatic lipase, a significant therapeutic target. This study presented the evaluation of ten flavonoid compounds in terms of their inhibitory activities against pancreatic lipase, utilizing both in vitro and in silico approaches. The results indicated that all tested compounds demonstrated modest and weaker inhibitory activities compared to the reference compound, orlistat. Among the compounds investigated, F01 exhibited the highest potency, with an IC50 value of 17.68 ± 1.43 µM. The enzymatic inhibition kinetic analysis revealed that F01 operated through a competitive inhibition mechanism with a determined Ki of 7.16 μM. This value suggested a moderate binding affinity for the pancreatic lipase enzyme. Furthermore, the associated Vmax value was quantified at 0.03272 ΔA·min−1. In silico studies revealed that F01 displayed a binding mode similar to that of orlistat, despite lacking an active functional group capable of forming a covalent bond with Ser152 of the catalytic triad. However, F01 formed a hydrogen bond with this crucial amino acid. Furthermore, F01 interacted with other significant residues at the enzyme’s active site, particularly those within the lid domain. Based on these findings, F01 demonstrates substantial potential as a candidate for further investigations.

Plastic pollution is one of the most serious environmental issues worldwide. The emission of plastics to the environment is highly related to the single-use plastics and packaging. Plastics themselves contain a wide range of potent toxic additives which could be released into aquatic environment consequently ecosystem health problems. In this study we tested the chronic effects of leachates from two common single-use plastics, also known as the packaging in Vietnam, food wrapper and foam box, on Daphnia magna across two generations in the laboratory conditions. The organisms were incubated in the medium containing plastic leachates at four concentrations, 0 mg plastics/L (control), 10 mg plastics/L (denoted as L10), 100 mg plastics/L (L100), and 1000 mg plastics/L (L1000) for 21 days in the first generation and 14 days in the second generation. The results showed that leachates from two common single-use plastics in Vietnam at the concentration up to 1000 mg/L did not impact on survival of D. magna. However, the leachates stimulated the organism reproduction which evidences for compounds interfering the reproductive function of D. magna. This revealed high potential toxic compounds from the used plastics. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the influences of leachates from the two common single-use plastics in Vietnam on D. magna, across two generations. Further investigations on the impacts of plastic leachates on zooplankton (e.g. population alteration) in situ are recommended because of high amount of plastic emission in water bodies of Vietnam.

Abstract This paper extends the study of a zero‐sequence impedance‐based fault location method (FLM) designed for medium voltage (MV) distribution feeders whose principle has been presented in a previous work Bach et al. This method is able to locate any type of earth fault with any type of neutral grounding inside a convex set of nodes forming the solution area. The total length of the lines inside this area is statistically computable a priori and depends only on the number and location of additional voltage measurements deployed on some remote end secondary substations. To be efficiently applied to the most challenging rural feeders presenting a lot of ramifications, simulations have shown a need for synchronized measurements, such as the ones obtained using phasor measurement units. Besides, this paper addresses the coupling potential of this method with more traditional ones such as Takagi‐based FLMs to enhance the performances of both, solving the multiple estimation problem while potentially locating the fault within one node. Finally, an extensive sensitivity analysis has been carried out, showing a good robustness with respect to impedance estimation errors or fault impedance values while showing the need for synchronization, especially on some remote measurement locations.

Coptosapelta flavescens Korth. is one of the medicinal plants used as a traditional medicine in Vietnam for a long time. However, few documents proved its safety for a long time. Therefore, the study aimed to determine the toxicity effects of the aqueous extract of C. flavescens by determining its effects after subchronic oral administration in Swiss albino mice. The toxicity of C. flavescens extract was tested at doses of 400 and 1200 mg/kg, respectively, over 30 and 60 days on an in vivo model. Animal weight, behavior, and condition changes were monitored throughout the process. At the end of the observation periods, hematological indices and histopathological features of the animal specimens were analyzed. The administration of C. flavescens extract at doses of 400 and 1200 mg/kg caused a weight difference in male mice after 30 days and in both sexes after 60 days of administration compared to the control group. There were no significant changes in hematological parameters and biochemical indexes of the liver and kidney compared with the control group. The histological structure of the liver showed changes when treated with C. flavescens at both doses after 60 days, whereas the histological structure of the kidneys exhibited differences only at the dose of 400 mg/kg. Overall, the findings of this study indicate that Coptosapelta flavescens Korth. is unlikely to have subacute and subchronic oral toxicity. However, there are some minor effects on the liver and kidneys.
