In this study, it was investigated the effect of local zoledronic acid application on implants with machined (MAC), resorbable blast materials (RBM), sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) surface implants integrated in rat tibias.Methodology: A total of 60 female Wistar rats weighing between 270 and 300 g were used in the study. The rats were passing divided into six classes: controls; MAC (n = 10), RBM (n = 10), SLA (n = 10), and local zoledronic acid (LZA) applied groups; LZA-MAC (n = 10), LZA-RBM (n=10) and LZA-SLA (n = 10) and implants were surgically placement into rat tibias in general anesthesia. After a four-week experimental period, the biomechanical bone implant connection level was determined with reverse torque analysis.Results: Osseointegration levels were detected highly in SLA and RBM surface compared with the machined surfaced implants in both control and treatment groups (p < 0.05). Additionally, local application of zoledronic acid in both three groups; implants increased the biomechanic osseointegration level compared with the controls (p < 0.05).Conclusion: In this research, we observe that the local application of the zoledronic acid could increase the osseointegration, and RBM and SLA surface could be better than machined surfaced implants in terms of bone implant connection. Fifty two 8-week-old female Sprague Dawley rats were equally divided into four groups. The control group included those fed a standard rat diet with no operation performed during the experiment. The periodontitis, ASI I, and ASI II groups were subjected to experimental periodontitis induction for 11 days after being fed a standard rat diet alone, a diet containing 1.81 g/kg ASI complex, or a diet containing 3.62 g/kg ASI complex, respectively, for 8 weeks. Throughout the 11-day duration of periodontitis induction, all rats were fed standard feed. The rats were euthanized on the eleventh day, and their tissue and blood samples were collected. In the periodontitis group, elevated tissue destruction parameters and reduced tissue formation parameters were found, as compared to the ASI groups. Levels of enzymes, cytokines, and mediators associated with periodontal tissue destruction were lower in rats fed a diet containing ASI complex after experimental periodontitis. These results indicate that ASI complex could be an alternative agent for host modulation. ASI offers potential benefits for vascular and bone health. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential effects of ASI complex on bone healing of critical-sized defects in rats. Methods: The rats were randomly assigned to two groups of 21 rats each. The control group was fed a standard diet for 12 weeks; after the first 8 weeks, a calvarial critical-sized defect was created, and the rats were sacrificed 7, 14, and 28 days later. The ASI group was fed a diet containing 1.81 g/kg of ASI for 12 weeks; after the first 8 weeks, a calvarial critical-sized defect was created, and the rats were sacrificed 7, 14, and 28 days later. The calvarial bones of all the rats were then harvested for evaluation. Results: Osteoblasts and osteoclasts were detected at higher levels in the ASI group compared with the control group at days 7, 14, and 28 of the calvarial defect (P0.05). Conclusion: ASI supplementation significantly improved bone tissue healing in rats with critical-sized defects. This study demonstrated that ASI can enhance bone repair and has potential as a therapeutic regimen in humans. Background: Chondroblastoma (CB), a rare benign bone tumor that produces chondrocytes, often develops in the epiphysis or apophysis of children and young adults. The treatment of these rare tumors is complex. The standard treatment protocol involves curettage with local adjuvants and bone graft or cement application. The authors examined 38 CBs to determine risk factors for local recurrence, complications, and functional outcomes following epiphyseal curettage. Methods: Twenty-two girls and sixteen boys aged 10 to 17 years with histologically confirmed chondroblastoma who arrived at our hospital between January 2000 and June 2021 were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical data, radiographic images, histological results, treatment, functional outcomes, and the local recurrence rate were examined—surgical treatment involved total tumor curettage, followed by bone grafting and adjuvant techniques. Local recurrences have also been reported. Results: The most frequently affected site was the proximal femur. Sites of involvement included the proximal femur in 10 (26.3%) cases, the proximal tibia in 8 (20.8%), the humerus in 5 cases (13.2%), the distal tibia in 4 cases (10.5%), the distal femur in 3 cases (7.9%), the supracetabular region in 3 cases (7.9%), the talus in 1 case (2.6%), the calcaneus in 1 case (2.6%), the scapula in 1 case (2.6%), the lumbar spine in 1 case (2.6%), and the iliac bone in 1 (2.6%) patient. The mean follow-up was 144.2 months (24 to 276). The local recurrence rate was 7.9%. The mean Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) score was 28.3 points (17 to 30). The mean duration of symptoms at presentation was 5.8 (range, 1 to 28) months. Conclusion: Aggressive curettage and bone grafting resulted in local control and good outcomes in most pediatric patients. In a relatively small proportion of cases, long-term complications and recurrence can occur due to growth plate damage and late diagnosis. In patients admitted to the pediatric clinic with pain, which is often accompanied by localized edema and joint effusion, early detection via advanced radiological scans (X-ray, CT, or MRI) may prevent delays in diagnosis.

Aim of the study Biologic reconstruction using tumor-bearing bone autografts devitalized by liquid nitrogen or extracorporeal irradiation (oncological sterilization) is a safe and effective method in musculoskeletal surgery. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of these two oncological sterilization methods on nerve recovery. Methods A total of 48 rats were randomly divided into 3 groups as autograft, irradiation and liquid nitrogen groups. A nerve defect created in the right sciatic nerve was reconstructed with an autograft obtained from the nerve itself. Group I underwent reconstruction with standard nerve autograft. Group II and Group III underwent reconstruction with devitalized nerve autograft treated through extracorporeal irradiation and liquid nitrogen, respectively. The left sciatic nerves of the rats served as control. Electromyography, motor function test and histomorphological analysis were performed to assess the nerve recovery on the 3rd (early stage) and 4th months (late stage). Results Electrophysiological assessment revealed better results in irradiation group compared with liquid nitrogen group in terms of myelinization and axonal regeneration. Motor performance of the autograft group was slightly better than the other groups. Histologically, autograft group demonstrated better results compared with other groups. Late-stage assessments revealed high rates of myelinization in the graft segment in liquid nitrogen group and in the segment distal to the graft in irradiation group. Conclusions This study has demonstrated that nerve autografts treated by oncological sterilization methods may be used for nerve reconstruction in limb salvage surgery. However, further studies are needed to clarify the applicability of these methods.

This study investigates the production of various reinforced and non-reinforced composite materials using powder metallurgy (PM). It presents the new approach into optimize the mechanical properties of hybrid composites (Al-SiC-B4C) produced with powder extrusion process. A16061 powders are used as the matrix material and B4C and SiC powders are used as the reinforcement materials. Matrix and reinforcement materials are mixed in a three-dimensional mixer. The mixtures are then subjected to cold pressing to form metal block samples. Block samples are subjected to hot extrusion in an extrusion mold after being subjected to a sintering process. This produces samples with a cross-sectional area of 25 × 30 mm2. These extruded samples were subjected to T6 heat treatment. The composite materials produced are examined in terms of density, hardness, transverse rupture strength, tensile strength, and wear resistance. Furthermore, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and XRD are performed to examine the microstructure, surface fractures, and surface abrasion. In this study, high density Al6061/B4C/SiC hybrid composite materials were successfully produced. After extrusion, some micro particles were found to crack. The highest hardness occurred in 12%B4C reinforced composites. The lowest hardness was obtained in Al6061 alloy without reinforcement. The highest tensile strength occurred in 12%SiC particle reinforced composite material. The highest wear resistance was obtained for 9%B4C+3%SiC samples due to the hardness of B4C and the good adhesion properties of the matrix and SiC. The migration of normal and malignant lymphoid cells is governed by specific adhesion molecules. Selectins comprise a family of adhesion receptors expressed by leukocytes, platelets and endothelial cells. In this study, the serum levels of soluble L-selectin and P-selectin were measured in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease and found to be significantly elevated in both patient groups compared to healthy controls. This result provides evidence that alterations in the expression and function of adhesion molecules may play an important role in the progression of lymphomas. Further studies are awaited to establish the exact roles of these adhesion molecules in distinct patterns of growth and spread of lymphomas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this prospective study was to determine the diagnostic value of Tc-99m MDP scintimammography (SMG) for the detection of breast cancer in patients with breast masses and to compare the results with Tc-99m MIBI scintimammography. Twenty patients, categorized as suspicious, positive or benign for breast cancer according to the mammographic findings were included in the study. Dual phase Tc-99m MIBI and Tc-99m MDP SMG were performed in the prone lateral position within 5 days of each other. Although early and late Tc-99m MIBI SMG showed equal (90.4%) sensitivity, the specificity of late Tc-99m MIBI (87.5%) was found superior to early (62.5%) imaging. The overall sensitivity and specificity of early Tc-99m MDP SMG were 71.4% and 62.5%, respectively. Although late Tc-99m MDP imaging showed 100% specificity, its sensitivity was only 23.8%. In the patients with palpable masses, both early Tc-99m MDP and Tc-99m MIBI showed equal sensitivity (100%), but the sensitivity of early Tc-99m MIBI (37.5%) was found slightly higher than Tc-99m MDP (25.0%) for nonpalpable breast lesions. The sensitivity of Tc-99m MIBI and Tc-99m MDP SMG in detecting metastatic axillary involvement was 66.6% and 50%, respectively. High sensitivity and specificity together with its low cost, easy availability and the possibility of detecting bone metastases seems to make Tc-99m MDP a contributive agent in the evaluation of breast lesions as an alternative to Tc-99m MIBI. Abstract Objective: This study aims to evaluate the clinical and biochemical (oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory mediators) effects of the gaseous ozone use accompanied by scaling and root planning (SRP) in periodontal treatment. Material and Methods: The study population consisted of 40 patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) randomly sorted into two groups of 20. The experimental group received SRP plus 3 watts gaseous ozone in two separate applications five days apart, whereas the control group received SRP plus placebo. Clinical periodontal parameters were assayed and saliva samples were taken before the initial and one month after the second treatment. Periodontal examination assessed plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth, and clinical attachment level (CAL). Total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), nitric oxide (NO), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), myeloperoxidase (MPO), glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) levels were evaluated from saliva samples. Results: Changes following treatment in PI, GI, probing depth, and CAL scores were similar for both groups (p>0.05). Of note, TGF-β levels were observed to be higher in the treatment group than in controls (p0.05). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that SRP plus gaseous ozone versus SRP alone does not correlate to a significant improvement in periodontal recovery.

Allogeneic grafts can be preferred to autogenous grafts in plastic and oral-maxillofacial surgery for vertical and horizontal bone deficiencies. Implant surface properties are an important factor in osseointegration. This study aims to evaluate the osseointegration levels of titanium implants with machined, sand-blasted, and acid-etched (SLA) and resorbable blast material (RBM) surfaces placed together with allogeneic bone tissue transplantations obtained from the tibia bone using biomechanical method. Twenty-five female Sprague-Dawley rats were included in the study. The rats were divided into groups in which machined (n=7), SLA (n=7), and RBM (n=7) surface implants were placed with the transplantation of bone taken from the tibia. Four rats (both left and right tibias) were used as donors. Grafts and implants were surgically placed in the corticocancellous part of the metaphyseal area of the tibia bones of rats. At the end of the 4-week experimental setup, all rats were killed, and the implants and surrounding bone tissue were subjected to biomechanical reverse torque analysis (N/cm). Sand-blasted acid-etched surface implants were observed to have higher biomechanical osseointegration levels than RBM and machined surface implants ( P <0.05). No statistical difference could be detected between the RBM and machined surface implants ( P >0.05). On the basis of the limited results of this study, it can be concluded that the osseointegration levels of SLA surface implants placed with allogeneic bone transplantation may be better than those of machined and RBM surface implants., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024 by Mutaz B. The aim of this study is to evaluate the osseointegration levels of lathe-faced titanium implants placed together with allogeneic bone tissue transplants obtained from tibia, femur, and mandible bones using a biomechanical method. Twenty-eight female Sprague Dawley rats were included in the study. The subjects were divided into groups where bone transplantations were performed together with implant placement from the tibia (n=7), femur (n=7), and lower jaw (n=7) regions. Four rats (left and right) were used as donors. Grafts, along with implants, were surgically placed in the corticocancellous part of the metaphyseal parts of the tibia bones of rats. At the end of the 2-week experimental setup, all rats were killed, and the implants and surrounding bone tissues were subjected to biomechanical reverse torque analysis (N/cm), no statistical difference was detected in terms of bone-implant fusion between the groups in which the femur and tibia bones were transplanted (P>0.05), while the bone-implant fusion value in the group in which the lower jaw bone was transplanted was found to be statistically higher than the femur and tibia bones (P<0.05). BACKGROUND The healing of bone defects is a serious challenge worldwide. One branch of dentistry deals with bone defects. Capsaicin has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and cholesterol-reducing effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of systemic capsaicin administered at different doses on bone healing. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 32 male wistar rats was used, their weight varying between 250 and 300 g. The rats were randomly divided into 4 groups of 8 rats each. The analyses served to evaluate the effect on healing of different doses of capsaicin and grafts. A significant increase was observed in the number of osteoblasts in the capsaicin-applied groups, compared with the control group. RESULTS The analyses served to evaluate the effect on healing of different doses of capsaicin and grafts. A significant increase was observed in the number of osteoblasts in the capsaicin-applied groups, compared with that of the control group. The inflammation scores showed a significant difference only in the control group and in the group administered with 50 mg/kg capsaicin (P=0.010). The osteoclast counts were significantly different between all groups. CONCLUSIONS As a result of the analyses, positive effects on bone healing were observed when capsaicin 0.25 mg/kg and 0.50 mg/kg was administered intraperitoneally. However, more studies are needed for more accurate information.
