7. Functional diversity in human song.

Abstract

Functional diversity–i.e., the diversity of morphophysiological characteristics of species in a biological community–revolutionized ecology in recent decades, shifting the focus of the field from species to ecosystems. While its ecological applications are known, its adaptability to other disciplines, specifically music, is explored here. We retrieved fourteen characteristics of 12,944 songs by the top 100 artists of the 2010s decade on four streaming platforms. Then, we calculated the three main components of functional diversity–richness, evenness, and divergence–to each artist using probabilistic hypervolumes. Furthermore, we investigated to what extent functional diversity and the traits of an artist, its albums and songs has an effect on their popularity across streaming platforms such as Spotify. High functional richness, where an artist's songs differ greatly sonically, correlated with increased listens of up to 244,300,000. This would lead to estimated profit earnings exceeding $1,000,000 per richness gain. Danceable, highly-energetic, melodic, pop, and, notably, melancholic songs, albums, and artists are more listened to than their counterparts in streaming services. We captured how patterns in human song might reflects the social state of human societies in recent years and demonstrate the potential of applying functional diversity concepts and tools across scientific and economic domains, extending its relevance beyond ecology. By demonstrating applications of state-of-the-art functional diversity metrics using music as a case study, we intent to communicate the often-complex concepts of functional diversity using the familiar realm of music, which is an intrinsic trait of human cultures across the globe. Abstract

This study aimed to survey the species of Gomphonema Ehrenberg in pristine Cerrado streams located in the Brasilia National Park, Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park and Terra Ronca State Park, located in the midwestern region of Brazil. Samples were taken between the years 2012 and 2013 (rainy and dry seasons), with the periphyton collected from seven different substrates, whenever they were present (pebbles, silt, tree trunk, macrophytes, sand, leaf litter and root). We identified 10 taxa in this study. The species Gomphonema sp.2 was present in all streams, and G. lagenula and G. brasiliense were the species with the highest frequency of occurrence in both seasonal periods. This study contributed with three species cited for the first time for the midwestern region (G. brasiliense subsp. pacificum, G. laticollum and G. pseudoaugur). Este estudo teve como objetivo inventariar as espécies do gênero Gomphonema Ehrenberg presentes no perifíton em córregos prístinos situados no Parque Nacional de Brasília, no Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros e no Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca, localizados na Região Centro-Oeste do Brasil. As amostragens foram realizadas entre os anos de 2012 e 2013 (estações chuvosa e seca), e o perifíton foi coletado em sete diferentes substratos, sempre que presentes (seixos, silte, tronco de árvore, macrófitas, areia, folhiço e raiz) e períodos sazonais. Um total de 10 táxons foi identificado. A espécie Gomphonema sp.2 ocorreu em todos os córregos analisados. Gomphonema lagenula e G. brasiliense foram as espécies que apresentaram maior frequência de ocorrência em ambos os períodos sazonais. Este estudo contribuiu com três citações pioneiras para a Região Centro-Oeste (G. brasiliense subsp. pacificum, G. laticollum e G. pseudoaugur).

26. Extinction of rare fish predicts an abrupt loss of ecological function in the future of Amazonian streams.

Abstract

Species are going extinct 1,000 times faster than expected due to human impacts. When the extinction of species culminates in functional loss, ecosystem functioning is altered. Functional extinction risk depends on taxonomic and functional rarity, with the non‐redundant traits found in rare species being the most vulnerable.To investigate the relationship between taxonomic rarity and functional extinction, we ran extinction simulations driven by taxonomic rarity. Firstly, we sampled the fish fauna of 40 pristine Amazonian streams and compiled functional traits related to the body size, defence, diet, stratification, and activity of species. Then, we removed species, beginning with the rarest and ending with the commonest (and vice‐versa) and compared the observed patterns with random extinction at local and regional scales.Following the removal of rare species, the functional rarity and body size of the community both decreased, and functional extinctions occurred after less than 10% of extinction at both spatial scales. Otherwise, the removal of common species resulted in an increase in functional rarity at the local scale, although widespread species ensured the persistence of a set of unique functional traits at a regional scale. Additionally, more than 60% of the common species had to go extinct before any functional extinction occurred at either scale.If the ongoing mass extinction targets rare species, Amazonian stream ecosystems will be impacted by the loss of fish species associated with vulnerable functions.We propose an extinction risk assessment based on the ecosystem and recommend that future studies apply our approach to other taxa and ecosystems, to better understand the effects of human impacts on ecosystem functioning. Abstract

Aim A taxonomic study of the species of the genus Cosmarium Corda ex Ralfs (Desmidiaceae) was conducted in two lentic environments of the Upper Paraná River Floodplain (Garças and Patos lakes). Methods The samples were collected in November 2016. Two petioles of Eichhornia azurea (Sw) Kunth were sampled and analyzed qualitatively. Results Six species, nine varieties, and three forms were identified, with five taxa being common to both lakes, nine in Garças Lake, and four in Patos Lake. Of this, thirteen species represent the first records for the floodplain environment. Conclusion This study contributes to the knowledge of the biodiversity of this region, providing support for future ecological studies and biomonitoring. Resumo Objetivo Foi realizado um estudo taxonômico das espécies do gênero Cosmarium Corda ex Ralfs (Desmidiaceae) em dois ambientes lênticos da Planície de Inundação do Alto Rio Paraná (Lago das Garças e Lago dos Patos). Métodos As coletas foram realizadas em novembro de 2016. Dois pecíolos de Eichhornia azurea (Sw) Kunth foram amostrados e analisados qualitativamente. Resultados Seis espécies, nove variedades e três formas foram identificadas, sendo cinco taxa em comum a ambos os lagos, nove no lago das Garças e quatro no lago dos Patos. Deste total, 13 espécies representam o primeiro registro de ocorrência para os ambientes da planície. Este estudo objetivou inventariar o gênero Pinnularia Ehrenberg (Bacillariophyta) em cinco riachos preservados localizados em três unidades de conservação (Parque Nacional de Brasília, Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros e Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca). O perifíton foi coletado em diferentes substratos durante estações secas e chuvosas (anos de 2012 e 2013), totalizando 25 unidades amostrais. Ao todo 23 táxons foram identificados, sendo P. subanglica, P. Angustivalva e P. butantanum as mais frequentes. Seixos e silte foram os substratos mais ricos em espécies, com nove táxons cada. Entre os 23 táxons, 13 são citados pela primeira vez para o Brasil Central: P. angusta var. angusta, P. angustivalva, P. butantanum, P. divergensvar. biconstricta, P. divergens var. mesoleptiformis, P. gibba var. subundulata, P. paulensis, P. persudeticavar. persudetica, P. subgibba var. angustarea, P. subgibba var. capitada, P. superpaulensis, P. viridiformisvar. minor e P. undula var. undula. Abstract

Studies of the genus Pinnularia Ehrenb. are only incipient in central-western Brazil, especially in Goiás. Only 20 of the 170 taxa known from Brazil were recorded in this state until now. A taxonomic study of Pinnularia from Lago dos Tigres (Tocantins-Araguaia River Basin) recorded 20 specific and infraspecific taxa, distributed in 17 species, including P. instabilis whose lectotype is designated here. Only P. meridiana var. meridiana was previously recorded in aquatic systems of the state. Eighteen taxa are newly recorded for Goiás, and one is the first record in Brazil. The Pinnularia flora from Lago dos Tigres contains nine taxa in common with the Amazon River Basin flora, and seven other taxa that occur elsewhere in the Paraná River Basin. O gênero Pinnularia Ehrenb. é incipientemente estudado na região Centro-Oeste brasileira, especialmente em Goiás. Somente 20 de 170 táxons conhecidos no Brasil foram registrados nesse estado até agora. Nesse estudo, objetivou-se a realização de estudos taxonômicos de Pinnularia do Lago dos Tigres (Bacia Tocantins-Araguaia). Vinte táxons em nível específico e infraespecífico, distribuídos em 17 espécies, foram observados e caracterizados aqui, incluindo P. instabilis cujo lectótipo foi designado aqui. Somente P. meridiana var. meridiana foi primeiramente registrada em sistemas aquáticos do estado. Dezoito táxons constituíram citações pioneiras para o estado de Goiás e um foi o primeiro registro de ocorrência para o Brasil. A flora de Pinnularia do Lago dos Tigres apresentou nove táxons comuns com a Bacia Amazônica e outras sete foram comuns è Bacia do Paraná.

Abstract

Epibiosis is a facultative association between two organisms: the epibiont, which colonizes the surface of living substrates, and the basibiont, which hosts the epibionts. Among protists, while numerous accounts exist for ciliates as epibionts of zooplankton, little information is available about the occurrence of this relationship between flagellates and microcrustaceans in the neotropics. During a survey on the epibiotic relationship between ciliated protists and planktonic copepodsin a tropical floodplain, we reported for the first time the occurrence of Colacium vesiculosum as an epibiont on Thermocyclops minutus and Notodiaptomus amazonicus from southern Brazil. The mean infestation prevalence was significantly higher on adults 30.53% (± 2.85) in comparison with copepodites 0.87% (± 0.55). When hosts were separated by order (Calanoida and Cyclopoida) copepodites presented a mean infestation prevalence of 0.92% (± 0.85) and 0.83% (± 0.60) respectively, while adults had a mean prevalence of 29.55% (± 6.8) and 30.13% (± 5.83), which could be explained by the fact that adult copepods provide a more stable substrate for epibionts. 45. High taxonomic turnover and functional homogenization of rotifer communities in an amazonian river.

Abstract

Patterns of beta diversity of plankton communities in rivers have been mainly determined by hydrological factors that alter the dispersion and composition of species and traits. Rotifers in the Guamá River (eastern Amazonian River) were sampled (monthly between October 2017 and June 2019) to analyze the temporal variation of taxonomic and functional beta diversity and its partitions (turnover and nestedness) as well as the effects of temporal, environmental, and seasonal dissimilarities. Taxonomic turnover and functional nestedness over time were observed as well as functional homogenization, which was arguably due to the hypereutrophic condition of the river. There were no seasonal differences in taxonomic and functional beta diversity probably due the low environmental dissimilarity. This study demonstrated that this Guamá River stretch presented low environmental dissimilarity and hypereutrophic waters, which benefited the establishment of a community of species with high taxonomic turnover over time, but with low functional dissimilarity and loss of some functions related to the functional traits evaluated in the ecosystem. It is important to point out that temporal studies should evaluate both taxonomic and functional aspects of communities, mainly because the effect of environmental changes may be more noticeable at the functional level of communities.
